Laurence and Eric work in tandem as they are joined this week by their partners, Hector Barajas (first time guest!) and Gerry Tonella (returning from our Olympics episode) to hold space for the musical/cultural blockbuster event of the year – WICKED (part one). Full spoilers ahead for the movie, the stage musical, the book kinda, the source material (The 1939 film The Wizard of Oz) and the source material's source material (another book) as we discuss all things swankified in the Oz, Shiz, and beyond. We *are* in queer media so, naturally we have an Emerald City's worth of thoughts to share about this formative musical and its superb film adaptation. Then later in the episode, we share tales of our respective recent couples' vacations: Eric and Gerry recount their trip to Walt Disney World, and Laurence and Hector about their trip to Mexico City.Put your pointy hats on and vogue on down to the Ozdust Ballroom & enjoy this episode!========Get in touch with us!EMAIL US at gayforplaypodcast@gmail.comFOLLOW G4P (& Message us on any of our socials for a link to our Discord!)Twitter: @GayForPlayPodInstagram: @GayForPlayPodTwitch: twitch.tv/gayforplaypod========CREDITSIntro and outro music by Connor Marsh (@connorjmarshmallow)Show art by Benny Kessler (@retro.spectacle.studio)
Hector And Mike Experience - Common Sense In An Uncommon World
With the 2024 Olympics now behind us, Hector Barajas and Larry Venus shifted gears to chat about the upcoming NFL season, the game-changing impact of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) in college football, and how the Olympics brought Americans together to cheer on the nation's top athletes. They had a good laugh agreeing that, while stars like Simone Biles and "the guy from Turkey" dazzled on the world stage, the true MVP of the Paris games might just have been Snoop Dogg. The rapper seemed everywhere, from commentary to unexpected appearances, solidifying his place as the ultimate Olympic hype man. A legal battle is brewing over ballot boxes. Following last week's episode with Attorney General Xavier Becerra, host Alex Cohen sits down with California Republican Party spokesperson Hector Barajas, who explains why their unofficial ballot drop boxes play within the law. Barajas said ballot harvesting is allowed under rules put in place by Democrats, and that Republicans can "engage in the same activity that the Democrats have been doing for the last several years." Producer Esther Lee then joins to share her take on the ballot drop box drama. The California GOP is thumbing its nose at state law, dropping unofficial 'ballot drop boxes' (which they've marked as 'official') throughout Orange County and other regions in California. Often, these drop boxes are placed at churches and gun ranges.Naturally, the California Attorney General and Secretary of State are upset about this, but GOP representatives such as Hector Barajas don't appear to care, and are even refusing to say how many drop boxes are out there, or where they might be located. All of this appears to stem from the classic GOP accusations against Democrats of "ballot harvesting," which they say constitutes voter fraud. They consider very legal means of ballot drop-offs--such as signing off on your envelope for a particular person to drop off your votes--as illegal. But that's not the case here in California, or elsewhere in the US. You might remember the Project Veritas video claiming that Rep. Ilhan Omar was participating in voter fraud in Minnesota. In fact, it came out that the PV team appeared to try to bribe people to lie and say they were committing actual fraud for the Democratic politician. In some ways, this appears to be one more example of the death rattle of California's GOP. The party continues to shrink in relation to Democratic registration, and the nation's usual deep-pocketed contributors for Republican elections all but consider the state a lost cause. More than 75% of the state's Assembly members are now Democrats, and four of the 11 remaining GOP seats in the state Senate (there are just 40 senators in total) are also in serious trouble. Three of these four districts now have more registered Democrats than Republicans. We also take this moment to talk about the Republican Party on a national level, and how voter suppression is necessary for their survival. They've always had fascist tendencies, and we're watching it all in action here in 2020. Pundits were left scratching their heads last fall when Foreign Policy reported that Bernie is the top recipient of donations from the military. But to supporters, it was no surprise: Bernie has a long record of fighting for the rights of US troops to health care, housing, and education - as well as keeping them out of endless, counterproductive wars in the first place. In this week's episode, Briahna sits down with Kyle Bibby, co-founder of the Black Veterans Project and an organizer with progressive vets group Common Defense, to talk about how time spent in military service can bring someone to the left. Then, she talks to Hector Barajas, a veteran who was deported despite his years of service and who founded the Deported Veterans Support House in Tijuana, Mexico. A story of military vets barred from the country they served. At age seven, Hector Barajas crossed the Mexico border into United States as an illegal citizen. His family soon settled in Compton, California, where Hector encountered crime, gang violence, and racial division. Hector escaped the lifestyle by joining the United States Army as a non-citizen, becoming a medic for the 82nd Airborne Division. But personal problems soon led him to honorable discharge, prison, and deportation back to Mexico. In the first episode of this two-part series, Hector chronicles the humanity of being banished, and how he seeks to return to the country he once swore to protect.
