Everyone knows the Latino vote will be decisive in this presidential election year. But our guest today says most of what you know about Latino voters and how to win them over is wrong.  Mike Madrid is a third-generation Mexican-American and one of the country's leading political strategists when it comes to Latino voters. He was a senior operative for the California Republican Party who rubbed shoulders with the likes of George W. Bush and his generation of GOP officials. Madrid later got jaded by Trump and co-founded the Lincoln Project.  In his new book, “The Latino Century”, Madrid lays out a breadcrumb trail for both Republicans and Democrats to win this decisive block of voters, who he believes are very much up for grabs this year. He shares his findings with host & Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza as well as the reason why both parties are doing something right to win them — and something wrong.  Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Dastardly Cleverness in the Service of Good

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 7, 2024 62:53 Transcription Available

According to my guest this time, the United States is entering a Latino century, and that might be what saves our democracy. Mike Madrid is a top expert on Latino voting, and in recent years he's become a national leader in the bipartisan fight to save democracy. He's been the political director for the California Republican Party, a senior adviser to both Republicans and Democrats, and a co-founder of the never-Trump Lincoln Project. Now Mike has a new book, called The Latino Century: How America's Largest Minority Is Transforming Democracy.  One of his goals for it is to help the Democratic Party win against MAGA authoritarianism.  He's worried, though, that Democrats have been slow to get the message about Latinos and their crucial role in the nation's future. And he thinks that helps explain why so many Latinos have been moving towards the Republican Party, a development many Democrats find baffling.  According to Mike, they're baffled because they don't understand Latinos or other minorities nearly as well as they think they do. He says too many Democratic candidates, strategists, and pundits think of minorities as theoretical stereotypes instead of as real people with complex lives. That's why Democrats tend to assume immigration is the top issue for all Latino voters, for example, or that most want to be talked to in Spanish. Both of those assumptions may seem reasonable theoretically, but are often wrong in reality. Mike argues that now more than ever, Democrats need to get reality right. That's because first of all, the Latino vote can make the difference in crucial battleground states this year, including ones that may surprise you, like Wisconsin and North Carolina. And he believes that over the long haul, Latino voters can help revive all Americans' faith in democratic institutions — and democracy itself. — Spencer

The California Republican Party Convention kicks off Friday in Anaheim with a luncheon featuring former president and current GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump. While Trump is likely to get the lion's share of the attention, other prominent GOP candidates including Sen. Tim Scott, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy will also be on hand throughout the weekend.California boasts over 5 million registered Republicans  - more than any state other than Florida - but that is half the number of registered Democrats. No Republican has held statewide office in over a decade, and Democrats hold supermajorities in both houses. The state hasn't supported a Republican for president since 1988.  The convention comes at a time of deep stress within the state party, and the Dobbs decision and the events of January 6, 2021 have only exacerbated that stress. So, what to expect this weekend?  We asked Mike Madrid, a longtime Republican strategist, former political director for the California Republican Party and acknowledged expert on Latino politics. After a lifetime as a GOP stalwart, he denounced the party's embrace of Trumpism in 2016, and later cofounded The Lincoln Project. His efforts got him disavowed by the California party that he had helped build.Madrid joined us to talk about the state of the state Republican Party and about where the Republican Party is nationally, and helped us figure out who had the Worst Week in CA Politics.Show Notes:1:16 The state of the CA GOP3:09 The party platform5:39 "The pro-choice wing [of the GOP] has lost"6:25 What to make of "secret" anti-Trump Republicans9:43 Putting Mike Madrid in context12:00 The Republican Voter's mindset14:20 The CAGOP: 80% white in a state that is 35% white15:42 But, Larry Elder19:12 Does the CAGOP change?23:48 "The Republican Party is a societal problem"25:00 Where is the Latino vote?31:18 What happens if Republicans get a prolonged drubbing at the polls?36:25 What will we see at the CAGOP Convention?40:45: WWCAWant to support the Capitol Weekly Podcast? Inez Stepman of the Independent Women's Forum and host of the "High Noon" podcast is in for Jim. Today, Inez and Greg break down the first GOP debate. Who did well? Who struggled? And did anything happen to dent Trump's big lead? They also discuss the potentially criminal incompetence of officials in Maui that contributed to deaths of as many as 1,000 people and destroyed Lahaina. Inez lays out an infuriating series of bureaucratic insanity that wasted time and prioritzed woke goals over people's lives. Finally, they shake their heads as the California Republican Party voluntarily surrenders on a multitude of issues - and not just the cultural positions that are unpopular in the state but on several key issues where the public agrees with the longstanding GOP platform.Timestamps:0:45 - Analysis of the first GOP presidential debate, focusing on DeSantis, Ramaswamy, Haley, and Pence.10:51 - Trump's interview with Tucker Carlson14:46 - Inez lists a multitude of ways that incompetence among officials in Maui cost many lives and argues there should be a full investigation and probably serious prosecution over the many inexcusable mistakes.22:39 - The California Republican Party surrenders on many key issues, including positions that had been popular statewidePlease visit our great sponsors:4Patriothttps://4Patriots.comUse code MARTINI to get 10% off your purchase.

How will Republicans flip the messaging on voting by mail in the next election?

The California Republican Party is going to embrace two key election tactics that it shunned in the past. The GOP, both nationally and here in the Golden State, has decided to go all-in on voting by mail and ballot harvesting. Remember, Donald Trump, both as a candidate and as president, scorned voting by mail, early voting and other methods the Democratic Party has used to boost voter turnout, claiming they were fraudulent ways to rig an election and not trustworthy and urging Republican voters to just vote in person on Election Day. That came back to haunt the GOP as Democrats used those tools to their advantage in 2020 and 2022. Now, the Republicans have decided, if you can't beat ‘em, join ‘em, and they're launching a national campaign they're calling “Bank Your Vote.” Today, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and the leadership of the California Republican Party had a conference call, explaining this plan to us. For more on this, Megan Goldsby, Doug Sovern, and Brett Burkhart spoke with Shawn Steel, the longtime Republican National Committeeman for California.

Prop. 30: Green Infrastructure

We need to spend a lot of money on green infrastructure if we want to lower emissions and adapt to the climate crisis. Supporters of Proposition 30 say this measure would help the state do just that — by raising the state income tax by 1.75% on Californians who make more than $2 million a year. That money would be guaranteed for 3 things: electric car debates, electric car charging, and wildfire suppression. The political coalitions on this one are super confusing: The ‘Yes” side includes environmental justice groups, prominent Democrats, and the ride-hailing app Lyft. The “No” side includes groups that oppose tax increases like the California Republican Party, the Chamber of Commerce, and — perhaps surprisingly — Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Teachers' Association. Guest: Kevin Stark, KQED science senior editor
