Nobody beats ……..The Shiz? Oz gets very confusifying as we get a good green witch in Wicked: For Good, and an Emerald City that looks an awful lot like New York in The Wiz. The Cinematography Podcast Episode 336: Alice Brooks, ASC For cinematographer Alice Brooks, ASC, shooting both Wicked and Wicked: For Good concurrently was a huge feat. The giant sets, precise camerawork and complex, live lighting cues for the musical numbers required detailed planning and prep. But first, Alice and her long-time collaborator, director Jon M. Chu, broke down the scripts and discussed the emotional intentions for each scene. “When we first start talking about a movie, we talk about emotion,” says Alice. “I love getting an emotional cue for the camera the same way an actor would. What is the emotional intention in the scene? An actor gets to tell the story through their breath and through their looks and through their being. And I get to tell the story, the emotional story, through camera and lenses and lighting.” Separation, seclusion and surrender were the emotional themes in Wicked: For Good. “It became very clear that the first movie would live in this ever-present daylight,” explains Alice. “And the second movie would have this weight and complexity and maturity and density to it and live in the shadows.” 90% of Wicked takes place in the daytime, with the sun setting as Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) embraces her power, sings “Defying Gravity” and flies away. In contrast, Wicked: For Good takes place mostly at night, in the shadows, forest, and underbelly of Oz while Elphaba is in hiding. Alice chose to frame the characters Glinda and Elphaba in contrasting ways for the story. Now separated from Elphaba, Glinda (Ariana Grande) is central to the world of Oz. Alice kept her center punched, carefully composed and choreographed. Elphaba is framed always to the right or left, with tight close-ups and static hand-held shots, to emphasize her loneliness. When the two are together, Alice repeated the same motifs from the first movie, with Ephaba framed to the right and Glinda to the left, often holding hands. Though Wicked: For Good is a huge fantasy movie, Alice and the production crew tried to do as much practically and in camera as possible. The “Girl in the Bubble” dance sequence was done entirely with carefully choreographed mirrors and flyaway walls that were removed as Glinda dances. Alice planned it out using her daughter's bath toys and her husband's shaving mirror. The art department storyboarded it, then the special effects team was able to figure out all the mirror technology needed to pull it off. The camerawork had to be very precise, with many of the frames exactly matching the last, combining both a Technocrane and a Steadicam. Unreal Engine was an indispensable tool for Alice to aid the film's sophisticated lighting and shot design. She used the software to pre-visualize outdoor sets, making sure the sun was at the right angle for perfectly backlighting Glinda in her bubble over Munchkin Land. It also helped her discover where the sun would hit tall buildings and spires of the Emerald City. Unreal assisted with pre-lighting, finding where practical light sources could be integrated and built into interior sets. She even tested different camera lenses to see how they would look in the space under certain lighting conditions and at various angles and heights. Alice is the cinematographer for the upcoming animated Spiderman: Beyond The Spider-verse as well as an animated version of the Dr. Seuss book, Oh The Places You'll Go with director Jon M. Chu. Hey EICrackers, merry Friday...get ready for a magical, festive &... fatigued, episode!First up, Wicked For Good. We all went down the yellow brick road to the cinema to see the sequel. The story picks up after Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) has fled the Emerald City and been branded the "Wicked Witch of the West" by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). Glinda (Ariana Grande), now "Glinda the Good," struggles with her public role as the Wizard's associate while her friendship with Elphaba is tested. The film focuses on their final journey to see each other with empathy and change Oz "for good". We get into it.Next! We don't know if you've heard, but Christmas is coming. How do we know this? Because the annual supermarket/high street Christmas adverts have dropped in the UK. High street festive ads have become peak Christmas culture in the UK. For our non-UK listeners, Lena Dunham did a fairly good poke at this in Too Much with the John Lewis Rita Ora playing Santa ad. So this year, we're going to take a look at some of the big ones that have dropped. And finally... from Christmas Ads to CHRIST, not another ad. In a piece on Substack, Hannah Glenn explores her own fatigue with advertising, in a world where everything and everyone seems to be trying to sell her something. We hope you enjoy as always please do leave a review on your podcast player app, LY, O,R,B xxxThank you so much to Cue for editing this podcast!Beth's been loving: No One Is Talking About This, Patricia Lockwood, Oenone's Substack Ruchira's been loving: Wuthering Heights,BroadchurchOenone's been loving: Pluribus, Mother Mary TrailerWicked For Good - box office smash“Wicked: For Good” Is Very, Very BadCrisis At Christmas AppealTop 10 UK Christmas AdsJoel Goldby's Gift GuideNothing Feels Authentic Anymore Because Everything is an Ad, Hannah Glenn Hosted on Acast. Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked: For Good is the musical fantasy film which adapts the second act of the 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which is loosely based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, a reimagining of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaption. It is the sequel to Wicked (2024). Now demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) lives in exile in the Ozian forest, while Glinda (Arianna Grande) resides at the palace in Emerald City, revelling in the perks of fame and popularity. As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, she'll need to reunite with Glinda to transform herself, and all of Oz, for good. We break down all things from adapting Act 2, the magic of acting, and the pros and cons of leaning into all of the Wizard of Oz elements.

Apparently in movie history, there are only 2 actors to have 3 Number 1 films in a year. This sounds crazy! So Movie Mike investigates to find out if that is actually true and breaks down what actors he thinks have had the single best year run in movies from his research. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Wicked: For Good. Now demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba lives in exile in the Ozian forest, while Glinda resides at the palace in Emerald City, reveling in the perks of fame and popularity. As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, she'll need to reunite with Glinda to transform herself, and all of Oz, for good. Mike shares why he felt it could have been one movie, Arianda Grande and Cynthia Erivo difference in performances, how it compares to the Broadway musical but why he loves what the franchise has done for the movie theater experience. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Super Mario Galaxy starring Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy. He shares why he thinks about the new voice actors joining the cast and where it ranks on his list of most anticipated video game movies and his favorite Super Mario games. New Episodes Every Monday! This week, we're following the yellow brick road straight into an Oz double feature—Wicked: For Good and Return to Oz. Two films, decades apart, both proving that no matter how far you wander, you can't escape those ruby-slippered roots. To keep our courage up, we crack open two high-octane potions from Lagunitas: the Maximus Colossal IPA and the Shugga Original Recipe—big, bold brews with enough ABV to make even the Cowardly Lion roar. Let's just say there's no place like foam. Joining us is returning guest Adam Beam, who chatted with us about the original Wicked: Part One. He's back to help us untangle this Emerald-City-sized tapestry of witches, Wheelers, wizardry, claymation fever dreams, and questionable Kansas parenting. We ease on down the cinematic road, talk sequels that aren't really sequels, prequels that might be sequels, and why Return to Oz still feels like the dark and stormy night Dorothy really needed a therapist for. If you're into green girls, Gump gliders, and stories stitched together with a whole lot of heart, this episode is over the rainbow and then some. Grab a Maximus, click those heels, and join us—because this week, it's Oz or nothing.
Wicked: For Good Is this, the second Act (don't call it a sequel!) to Wicked (the smash hit musical of last year), a magical tour de force, or a misanthropical tour de farce? Does the film version of everything post intermission overcome some of the inherent issues of the stage show and elevate the material to defy gravity? Or is it all a sham waiting to be doused in water and melt away to nothing? We are here to check out if this Ozian festivating is 100% ozmapolitan or confusifying and disgustificating! It's Wizardly Dion, Jill the good, and Quinny the cowardly lion with special guest Ardella (of Kansas)! If the new “Wicked” movie makes you wish you could be whisked off to the Emerald City, you might want to visit Chicago's Driehaus Museum. Their latest exhibit showcases rare items from the 1939 musical “Wizard of Oz,” replica costumes, and gives visitors an inside look at how L. Frank Baum's beloved classic was adapted from book to screen. We talk with the museum's executive director Lisa Key about what else visitors looking for an Ozian fix can expect. (31:15) The Best Skis for Winter 2026 (39:30) The Best Ski Boots for Winter 2026 (39:30) Smith Vantage 2, £235 (26:00) Available in a range of colours, especially the matte black, ultraviolet and Emerald City options. This is a hybrid construction with Koroyd inside, improving shock absorbency, strength and lightweight. These hollow tubes allow a mass of airflow, complemented by the huge number of vents. Add in Mips, the magnetic buckle, Smith's superb AirEvac system, BOA fit adjustment, anti-microbe lining and audio ready earpads, and you're onto a winner. Atomic Revent AMID, £160 (27:30) This series of helmets has a far more contemporary aesthetic than Atomic helmets of recent seasons. It has an in-mold dual shell, so is light with active venting. It has a removable and washable merino and 3m X-Static liner so doesn't develop the smell some helmets can. It has audio ready earpads and the new AMID (Atomic Multi-directional Impact Deflector) tech, combined with a Holo Core EPS liner for enhanced safety. Bollé Keystone Mips, £120 (29:30) The Keystone is a new model, available in several colours. The minimalist aesthetic looks fab, and in testing we found it very comfortable. It doesn't have loads of vents, but at £120 it's great value. It's available without Mips for £90, but we recommend the added safety of Mips for £30 more. Oakley Flow Scape L Snow Goggles, £325 (32:30) The Flow Scape has a new conical lens shape giving a dramatically increased field of view (FOV). The lens tilts in towards the face at the base, and is wider and further away from the face at the top. They've even changed the design of the Switchlock lens quick-release system, removing the need for magnets which would have encroached on the FOV. The Vision Rapt face foam is an ultra-memory foam, giving incredible comfort. Even the sliders on the strap have been tweaked to reduce their profile. Each Flow Scape comes with two lenses, one for brighter conditions and the second is the Prizm Iced Iridium, which is one of the best lenses you can get for flat light or stormy conditions. The only downside with this goggle, apart from the cost, is that it will be too large for some. Head Neves Sunscreen, £330 (34:20) Wow. When we first tried this, we were blown away. The lens tech is next-level. This tint-changing tech covers categories S1-S3 and is solar powered. The solar panel generates a voltage, activating a microprocessor which controls the LCD to darken the lens. It changes tint almost instantly as you move from shade to light and back again. Scott Ambit LS, £135 (36:00) Ambit is a new goggle design from Scott, including this medium to large fit, as well as the Ambit Compact, which suits smaller face shapes. Scott sells more photochromic lenses, as they cover a range of conditions, saving the hassle of swapping lenses. This Amplifier lens tech provides superb clarity and definition, and we've tested it in stinking, and stellar, conditions, and it always delivers. Bliz G001, £79 (37:!5) The Bliz Scandinavian minimalist design, married with affordable quality, has impressed us. The G001 and G002 goggles are new for this season, available in adult and small sizes, and the lens is magnetic, for quick swaps. The G001's full frame construction looks almost frameless, whilst the G002 is more traditional, with a chunkier frame. The Smoke S3 lens is a fab choice when the sun's out and looks sensational in this black on white colourway. Mega comfy and excellent value. Benjamin Wainwright (Belgravia: The Next Chapter, Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim) joins Son of a Binge host Reshma Gopaldas to talk murder, mayhem, and Maigret. Not when you're slapping your biggest employer with a 2.5% payroll tax while they're already planning their escape to business-friendly Bellevue. We break down how Seattle's anti-business policies are driving away the golden goose, leaving thousands of workers jobless and the city scrambling to fill budget holes. From the jumpstart payroll tax to sky-high costs that make even Uber rides painful, Seattle's socialist experiment is playing out exactly as you'd expect – with companies voting with their feet and taking jobs elsewhere.Think this is coincidence, or are we watching cause and effect in real time? How long before other cities learn from Seattle's expensive mistakes? Like and subscribe if you're tired of politicians pretending their policies don't have consequences – because we're just getting started exposing this madness.

Class One of The Art of Influence opens with The Wizard of Oz—how Production Designer Cedric Gibbons and Set Decorator Edwin B. Willis built Oz from the ground up. I unpack the sepia-to-color switch, Munchkinland's circular plan, the Yellow Brick Road as a story spine, Emerald City's Art Deco vocabulary, the Wizard's forced-perspective corridor, and why the sets still feel alive today. This episode is free; the full masterclass—covering MGM's greatest builds and their ripple effect on modern film and TV—is available on my site. Keywords: Wizard of Oz, production design, set decoration, Cedric Gibbons, Edwin B. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds in Ann Arbor and Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund in Seattle - caught up postgame after Washington's 24-7 loss to Michigan, a game where anything that could have gone wrong for the Huskies did. And then when it seemed to go right, the nature of the brutal battle turned those tiny wins into Pyrrhic victories due to injuries. Three offensive players - starting left tackle Maximus McCree, starting tight end Quentin Moore, and backup tight end Kade Eldridge - all went down with first half injuries and Washington Head Coach Jedd Fisch said postgame that the prognosis for all three in terms of coming back to play soon wasn't good. In fact, McCree is now out for the year with a foot injury. The guys talked about how the injuries impacted a game that already had major injury concerns for both teams, how Michigan was able to pull the card UW used last year against the Wolverines by using second-half turnovers to go ahead and stay ahead on the scoreboard, the massive discrepancy in time of possession - especially in the fourth quarter - and more. They talked about the battle between Demond Williams and Bryce Underwood, how the battle in the trenches ultimately impacted the game for both young quarterbacks, and also Fisch taking responsibility for not getting his team prepared to finish the game the way they needed to. Washington has figured out a way to beat the teams they should. But what about the teams they could beat? That also is something the guys talked about in their final thoughts as the Huskies head back to Seattle licking their wounds and searching for answers as another tough opponent - Illinois - is set to travel to the Emerald City off a bye week. Oh, and Kim has a couple passes for Sunday's hoops exhibition game versus UNLV, so if you're interested send him an email: kimg@dawgman.com To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Off The Bench is back weekdays from 10a to 11a followed by The Stone Shields Show from 11a to noon! The Cincinnati Bengals (2-2) host the Detroit Lions (3-1) at Paycor Stadium on Sunday, October 5, 2025, in a 4:25 p.m. ET FOX showdown—America's Game of the Week. With Joe Burrow sidelined by injury, backup Jake Browning steps up amid a Bengals offense averaging a league-worst 19.3 points and 205 yards per game. Last week's 3-point dud in Denver exposed their woes: just 159 total yards and nine first downs. Defensively, they're porous, allowing 30+ points in three of four contests. Ja'Marr Chase remains elite, but Cincy's 2-2 ATS mark as underdogs screams fragility. Home cooking offers slim hope—they score 31 at Paycor but concede 27. Detroit roars in on a three-game heater, leading the NFL with 34.2 points and 365 yards per game. Jared Goff's precision (9 TDs, 2 INTs) fuels a balanced attack, with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery gashing defenses (top-10 rush duo). New OC John Morton adds wrinkles to Dan Campbell's gritty scheme. The Lions' D, allowing 317 yards nightly, thrives in chaos. They're 3-1 ATS on the road lately, and experts peg a 75% win probability. Odds: Lions -10.5, total 47.5. Simulations favor a tight 25-24 Detroit squeaker, but most see a rout. For Bengals fans, it's survival mode; for Lions, a statement en route to contention. The 2025 MLB Division Series explode into action Saturday, October 4, pitting powerhouses against wild-card warriors in best-of-five thrillers. In the AL, powerhouse Toronto Blue Jays (1 seed) host the surging New York Yankees (WC), where Aaron Judge's bat clashes with Toronto's deep rotation led by Kevin Gausman. Meanwhile, Seattle Mariners (2 seed) face gritty Detroit Tigers, with Tarik Skubal's 14-K wild-card gem eyeing a repeat against Seattle's ace Luis Castillo—expect pitching duels in the Emerald City. At 84, veteran mogul John Malone is still a power broker, hinting at “further consolidation in the media industry” following a recent sit down with David Ellison. Should we be on the lookout for a Warner–Paramount merger? Meanwhile in Vegas, the Sphere’s $100 million Wizard of Oz reimagining leans on AI to expand the visuals and even slip in cameos of David Zaslav and James Dolan. The Directors Guild did not take kindly to the stunt. Partners in Banter Kim Masters and Matt Belloni pull back the curtain on the Sphere's Emerald City sideshow. Plus, Masters speaks with Runway co-founder Cristóbal Valenzuela about the role of artificial intelligence in Hollywood. The Chilean-born developer acknowledges that AI may lead to some job losses, but he argues it will ultimately benefit filmmakers. He explains why studios including Lionsgate, Netflix, and Disney are already using Runway’s tools. Plus, he compares the current backlash against AI to the upheaval that followed the introduction of sound in film.

Amy Sundberg, public safety reporter for The Urbanist and publisher of Notes from the Emerald City, joins Hacks & Wonks to discuss how Seattle's City Council is poised to expand the city's surveillance pilot program before collecting any evaluation data on its effectiveness, raising concerns among privacy advocates about potential federal access to the data amid heightened immigration enforcement. The expansion, scheduled for a final council vote on September 9 at 2:30 p.m., would install new cameras in three areas and tap into Seattle Department of Transportation's existing network of traffic management cameras, adding more than 365 cameras total to the Seattle Police Department's Real-Time Crime Center. Seattle is bracing for a major tourism downturn in 2025, with forecasts showing a 27% drop in international visitors. From the Canadian travel boycott slashing cross-border trips, to struggling duty-free shops and fewer hotel bookings, the Emerald City's visitor economy faces serious challenges. But it's not all bad news—downtown Seattle is rebounding, with rising foot traffic, hotel occupancy, and new development bringing energy back to the city. And with major global events on the horizon, there's hope for long-term growth.
