With the recent retirements of longtime Dungeons & Dragons luminaries Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford, the hosts take a thoughtful look at the history of these figures, their legacy, and what their departure means for the game's future. The episode explores the consequences of Hasbro's increasing influence on creative decisions, the fallout from the OGL crisis, and the failure of initiatives like the Sigil VTT. Throughout, the hosts consider what lies ahead for D&D—whether the game will weather the storm of corporate missteps or if third-party publishers will seize the moment to redefine the RPG landscape. Amid uncertainty, one thing is clear: the future of the game will be shaped by both the community's response and the creative forces willing to strike out on their own. Key Takeaways The State of Dungeons & Dragons Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford, two of D&D's most influential figures, have stepped down. Perkins has worked on D&D since 1988, while Crawford helped shape 5e's identity. Their exit signals the end of a creative era and raises questions about who will lead next. Hasbro's increased focus on profitability has compromised creative freedom. The OGL crisis alienated fans and damaged trust in Wizards of the Coast. Sales of the 2024 Player's Handbook were record-breaking but still missed expectations. Shortages of physical books suggest logistical and planning issues. Industry and Community Impacts The Sigil VTT project, led by video game designers, failed to meet community needs. Layoffs and leadership changes have made the future of D&D increasingly uncertain. Many believe D&D is leaving its "golden age" and entering a phase of instability. Hasbro's corporate oversight has placed immense pressure on remaining design staff. Amanda (noted designer) is recognized as talented but remains controversial. The rise of third-party developers may usher in a more decentralized RPG scene. Players are growing more divided over recent content, pricing, and delivery models. The shift toward digital may alienate some fans and raise the cost of entry. Despite frustrations, many still wish D&D and its former designers well. It was a picture perfect day in the Emerald City as the Washington Huskies got after it on Day 10 of their spring football campaign. The guys from Dawgman.com - Scott Eklund and Chris Fetters - offered up their thoughts on a day where the players weren't in full pads - just shells and shorts - and they were coming off a 110-play scrimmage just two days prior. That meant a ton of cleanup work, more install for the offense and defense, and also a chance for some of the players that haven't been able to scrimmage - like Denzel Boston and Omari Evans on offense and Ephesians Prysock and Tacario Davis on defense - to run around a bunch and get back to doing some actual football. The highlight of the day was the final team period, one where the offense was given 80 seconds to go the length of the field. They had to score, as the defense was ahead 26-21. The number-one offense, led by Demond Williams, got all the way to the 5-yard line with 1 second left on the clock but couldn't find the end zone on their final play. The second team, however, found success through a Kai Horton pass to a diving Jace Burton in the corner of the end zone over safety CJ Christian. The entire offense went nuts and sprinted over to Burton to celebrate the big play. Scott and Chris talked about the ending team period, as well as a couple players on both sides of the ball that stood out to them during the day. They also remarked on some of the things that caught their eye during the individual periods. Those periods are a great time to watch the coaches really get to work on proper technique. Scott gave an update on the one recruit that was at practice today - 2027 Puyallup OL Gecova Doyal - before finishing the podcast with their final thoughts. What if we told you that the most important company in US healthcare was run from a farm in rural Wisconsin? And that farm contained the world's largest subterranean auditorium, as well as Disneyland—style replicas of Hogwarts and the Emerald City? What if we told you that the person who started, runs and owns this establishment has legally ensured that it will never be sold, never go public and never acquire another company? And that this person, Judy Faulkner, is also likely the wealthiest and most successful self-made woman in history?Welcome to the story of Epic Systems, the software company that underpins the majority of the American healthcare system today. Epic isn't “just” an electronic medical record (the category it's usually lumped into), or an online patient portal (which is how most of the US population interacts with it via its MyChart application). It's more akin to a central nervous system for hospitals and health clinics. Almost everything in a hospital — from patient interactions to billing, staffing, scheduling, prescriptions and even research — happens on Epic's platform, and over 90% of American medical schools' graduating doctors, nurses and health administrative staff are trained on it during their educations. Tune in as we dive into the almost-unbelievable story of how this epic company came to be!Sponsors:Many thanks to our fantastic Spring ‘25 Season partners:J.P. On September 25, 1997, one of the most shocking trades in NBA history included Seattle SuperSonics legend Shawn Kemp, traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and rising star Vin Baker going to the Pacific Northwest. More than two decades later, these two former All-Stars sat down together for the first time to reflect on that pivotal moment in their careers. In this exclusive episode, recorded live from Seattle's Edgewater Hotel in February 2025, Kemp and Baker talk about the day of the trade, what it felt like to be swapped for one another and how their careers unfolded in the years since. They share behind-the-scenes stories about going head-to-head on the court, their experiences playing in front of the passionate Seattle crowd, and how the trade shaped their legacies. The conversation also dives deep into their personal journeys, including battles with addiction, the path to recovery, and life after basketball. They talk about what they're up to now, including Vin's work with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Recovery Centers he's opening—starting in Wisconsin—to support others on their own healing journeys. Special thanks to The Edgewater Hotel for hosting us, and to the Swinomish Casino and Lodge for sponsoring this conversation. This episode was co-produced with our friends at Converge Media. And of course, thank you to Seattle NBA Fans, our additional partners and the entire Seattle hoops community for riding together with us as we continue this journey toward the eventual return of the NBA to the Emerald City.

Now in its 22nd year, this beloved occasion promotes inclusion and provides a catered dinner, elegant attire, and an evening filled with unforgettable happiness for students with special needs. Earl expresses his deep personal connection to this cause, underscoring the significance of community and service. Additionally, Earl addresses a more serious issue, shedding light on the concerning increase in anti-protest laws during the Trump administration, which pose a threat to First Amendment rights and emphasize the necessity of remaining vigilant against such threats to our freedoms. In his birthplace of Seattle, columnist and publicist Leo Lassen became a living legend while working as a baseball radio host. From 1931 until 1960, he covered the Pacific Coast League team in the city. When the Seattle Rainiers played in Sicks' Seattle Stadium, his heyday took off at the same time the teams success did. Lassen was the voice of baseball in the Emerald City, the most important game in town at the time. He was well-known around the city for his quick-fire delivery, which was full of detail and baseball knowledge. After a pay dispute ruined his broadcasting job, he withdrew into his own world and never returned to the ballpark where he had gained notoriety. He was a lifelong bachelor who tended to his mother and his roses at home in Wallingford during his retirement.Listen now to learn more about the long time voice of the Seattle Rainiers!

In what Jay has claimed is the episode with "the best bottom five we've ever done," the guys tackle the often-maligned sequel to "The Wizard of Oz," 1985's "Return to Oz," starring Fairuza Balk in a vision of the Emerald City that gave most Gen-X kids recurring nightmares. Assigned by Mike, will Jay's viewing of this movie surface long repressed horrors from childhood? Well, if it doesn't, then both of our intrepid hosts listing off their bottom five child movie traumas most assuredly will have someone curling into a fetal position. When Mike screams "What in the name of bottomless childhood torment are we doing here movie?" you know a nerve has been struck! So jump right in, have a listen, and don't forget to share the cinematic nightmares that haunted your childhood—misery loves company, after all!

Send us a textReturn to Oz is famous for scarring a generation of kids with its dark, surreal imagery and unsettling villains. But was it truly a nightmare, or a bold, creative take on the Oz legend? In this episode, Andrea and Ryan explore whether this dark fantasy was too intense for children or if it was just the kind of movie that challenges kids to confront their fears in a way that few films dared to at the time.Follow us @disneyinsideoutpodcast

Maybe late-night TV shouldn't be called “late-night TV” anymore, with so many viewers consuming it in clips the morning after, on their phones. Yet the genre's hallmarks — the avuncular host, the sidekick, the band, the monologue, the desk, the guests — linger. Most were stamped on America's consciousness by Johnny Carson.A new biography about an old reliable, Bill Zehme's “Carson the Magnificent” harks back to an era when doom and scroll were biblical nouns and Carson's “Tonight Show” was a clear punctuation mark to every 24-hour chunk of the workweek — less an exclamation point, maybe, than a drawn-out ellipsis. “They want to lie back and be amused and laugh and have a nice, pleasant and slightly … I hate the word risqué … let's say adult end to the day,” is how a producer in 1971 described the millions tuning in from home, to Esquire.Carson went off the air in 1992, after three decades on “Tonight,” and left this Earth in 2005. Zehme, a journalist known for his chummy celebrity profiles, struck a book deal almost immediately but struggled to get purchase on his subject— “the ultimate Interior Man,” he despaired to a source, “large and lively only when on camera” — and then was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. He died himself last year at 64, and a former “legman” and friend, Mike Thomas, has finished the project, giving it a doubly valedictory feel. There were plenty of earlier books to consult, like “King of the Night,” by Laurence Leamer (who wrote about Joanne Carson in “Capote's Women”), “And Now … Here's Johnny,” by a young Nora Ephron, and the memoirs of Carson's eternal second banana, Ed McMahon. His lawyer's tell-all, published in 2013, is tellingly unmentioned. Zehme and Thomas have taken, if not the high road, the yellow brick one, with Carson's Midwestern background left in dusty black and white while the nitty-gritty of show business is buffed to a high Emerald City sheen.Give the authors points for changing up the standard chronological format. We don't get to Carson's birth date of Oct. 23, 1925, in Corning, Iowa, until the 107th page; his rebirth on Oct. 1, 1962, in NBC's Studio 6B, midwifed by Groucho Marx, being the main event. On air, Carson would take on various goofy guises, including the turbaned Carnac the Magnificent. The book's title, and its light glide over his womanizing and sometimes violent alcoholism, suggest that in real life, too, he was a master of disguise and escape. After an unpleasant first date with Jody, he gives her a cactus in a bedpan with a note reading: “Sit on this. It will remind you.” After they married, she would sometimes wake with bruises. “Did he hurt you, Mom?” Joanna's son asks after blowups. Zehme attributes such behavior to a booze-poisoned “doppelgänger”; he credits Carson with destigmatizing divorce without considering how swiftly, today, his whole operation would be canceled.Visiting a proto-couples counselor, Carson “would taste shrinkage for the first time,” but he was far more comfortable overseeing Carson's Couch. He might have been his own best analyst. “My job is to give them that feeling,” he told the “Tonight Show” regular Tony Randall of his drowsing masses, “that there will be a tomorrow.” How very yesterday.

Cinematographer Alice Brooks, ASC was in post on In The Heights four years ago when director Jon M. Chu let her know their next project together was adapting the world-famous Broadway musical, Wicked. With such a huge fan base, Alice and Chu wanted to make sure they respected the musical, but they both wanted to find a dynamic, filmic way to approach the material. “John kept instilling in us, don't make the obvious choices,” Alice says. “We were all creating a world of Oz together that no one had ever seen before, that was magical and wondrous and a little bit different.” Alice chose to go back to the source material for inspiration- the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. “Every single paragraph has an incredibly rich color description. Beautiful, poetic, just the world of Oz in color. It's unbelievable. And color means something, color is symbolism in Oz. No color is arbitrary.” Alice embraced all the colors of the rainbow for Wicked. They chose the color palette of pink and green for Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), with pink hued lighting to represent hope and connection between the two characters. In Wicked, good and evil are not as clearly defined as in typical fairy tales, since it's the origin story of how Elphaba becomes the wicked witch. Alice knew she could play with light and contrast between the two characters. Sunrise lighting would represent Glinda, while sunset and darkness represented Elphaba. Alice made notes in the script for time of day as references for each character. She worked closely with gaffer David Smith to create complex lighting cues throughout the film to match sunrise for Glinda and sunset and darkness for Elphaba. Early on, the production team discussed how to create the magical world of Oz without relying on bluescreens or virtual production. In London, they built real, massive, practical sets just like in old Hollywood movies. Alice remembers that Wicked used 17 sets that were 85 feet by 145 feet, with four huge backlots: Munchkinland, Shiz University, the train station, and Emerald City. Each was the size of four American football fields. “We had real tangible spaces to light and to create in,” she says. “And we didn't live in a blue screen world that so many movies do these days.” To create just the right green skin tone for actress Cynthia Erivo, Alice and makeup designer Frances Hannon did several makeup and lighting tests on different shades of green. It took a lot of trial and error to find the right shade of green- many hues simply looked like paint, or appeared grayish under the lights. As the DP, Alice also had to choose what lenses Wicked would use to capture both the scope and intimacy of the story. She worked with Dan Sasaski, Panavision's senior vice president of optical engineering and lens strategy, to create the Ultra Panatar II series of lenses for the film. For closeups, Alice chose a 65 mm lens for Cynthia Erivo and a 75mm lens for Ariana Grande because she found that a slightly different focal length for each actress worked best, due to the different shapes of their faces.
