Mike Ferrentino is back behind the microphone in this episode of Reviewing the News, and Mike and Simon get right into what happened in the bike industry in August. They recap the exciting UCI MTB World Championships in Andorra; Mike gives his take on the interesting Specialized and Frameworks partnership; and they both agree that cross-country mountain bike courses should be longer. Simon puts Mike on the spot about his racing history, and they wonder if the bike retail landscape is ever going to return to ‘normal', and lots more.RELATED LINKS:BLISTER+ MembershipBLISTER+ Real World TestimonialsBlister LabsThis Week's Gear GiveawayBlister Mountain Bike Buyer's GuideTOPICS & TIMES:The Breck Epic (1:49)Howard Grotts' Crash (4:02)MTB World Championships (10:58) Mike's Microphone Looking Safe 24:58)Spot Bikes vs Gates Lawsuit (25:57)Scott's Two CEOs (30:35)Specialized/Frameworks Partnership (34:18)Lifetime Events and Races Doing Well (41:10)Mike's Racing History & the Leadville 100 (43:21)Amazon Accountability (57:33) Hosted on Acast. Christian Bagg on racing Leadville by handcycle

When Christian Bagg crossed the finish line at the Leadville 100 this year, he became the first rider to complete (and start) the notorious high alpine race with a handcycle. He did it with a bike he created through his company, Bowhead Corp, the leading purveyor of adaptive mountain bikes. Taking part in Leadville was part personal challenge and part broader statement — he wanted to make it clear that cyclists with mobility disabilities can race alongside able-bodied riders at the toughest events in the world, no matter the terrain. After an injury left him paralyzed from the waist down in 1996 at the age of 20, the machinist from Calgary spent over a decade contemplating how to design a bike that could handle narrow singletrack, loose ascents, and rutted descents. Nearly two decades and countless iterations later, he and his team have done just that. Christian sat down with Payson to talk about the long road to designing the bike, racing the Sea Otter Fuego XL to get into Leadville, and how he managed to assuage the race organizers' fears that he might not be able to complete the 100 miles and nearly 12,000 feet of climbing that Leadville covers. They also discuss the potential controversy of para-athletes using motor-assisted bikes in competitive events, why having one is necessary, and why he wants to be the first line of defense in the debate. Chad Cheeney is the co-founder of Durango Devo, a non-profit mountain bike program for kids in Durango, Colorado. Since the program began in 2006, Chad has coached thousands of young riders, including Sepp Kuss, Christopher Blevins, Sarah Sturm, and Howard Grotts. But beyond those who have gone on to become world title holding pros, many more have achieved the program's central objective: becoming life long riders. Chad talks to Payson about why he wanted to start a development program out of college and why he prioritizes fun and exploration over structured training. They also talk about their shared memories of Durango Sweet Elite, a U25 team that was created for graduates of Fort Lewis College and alumni of Durango Devo. In 2013 when Chad was Team Manager, the roster included Payson, Sepp Kuss, Sarah Sturm, and Stephan Davoust. They discuss some of Chad's unconventional coaching methods that cultivated memorable moments between the races, and how his emphasis on community and team building has carried over into the training practices of some of Durango's most successful pros. They also talk about how his coaching has changed since he became a father, and the moment he learned that Sepp Kuss had won a stage at the Tour de France.

Sarah Sturm is an all terrain cyclist who's raced road, cross country, cyclocross, and gravel. After moving to Colorado to attend Fort Lewis College, she fell into mountain biking almost by accident. After a few years on the collegiate and development scene, however, she quit racing altogether. It wasn't until she returned to the sport in 2018 that she found seemingly non-stop success, winning back-to-back singlespeed cyclocross national championships, the crit race at Sea Otter Classic, and placing second at the Leadville 100. Her win at 2019's Belgian Waffle Ride shot her to stardom, and established her as one of the foremost women of gravel. In this conversation, she and Payson talk about being teammates on the development team Sweet Elite along with Howard Grotts, Sepp Kuss, and Stephen Davoust among others. They talk about how the experience taught them some painful but valuable life lessons, though on opposite ends of the spectrum, and why Sarah decided to step back from racing for awhile. They talk about the professional conundrum of Singlespeed Worlds, where partying is mandatory and serious racing is discouraged. Sarah describes some of her favorite moments from those races, which involve male strippers, an enormous fast food order, and falling out of a trailer in a glittery helmet and tutu. She also talks about her breakthrough win at Belgian Waffle Ride in 2019, which was her first gravel race and the longest ride she'd ever done by 40 miles. They also talk about the graphic design business she started during lockdown, why she doesn't pre-ride courses or use training data, and her youthful aspirations of becoming a professional surfer despite living in Albuquerque.

Sepp Kuss, Howard Grotts, and Chris Blevins are three of Payson's best friends, and also some of the most accomplished professional cyclists in the world. All three Durango, CO natives, Payson moved to their hometown when he was eighteen, and enjoyed having them as teammates, friends, and competitors during some their most formative years coming up through the pro ranks. After winning multiple national titles on the mountain bike, Sepp Kuss moved to the road, where he enjoyed a meteoric rise. Now riding for ProTour outfit Team Jumbo-Visma, Sepp enjoyed enormous success in 2018, winning the Tour of Utah and completing his first grand tour, the Vuelta a España. Howard Grotts is an Olympian, World Championship medalist, World Cup winner, many time national champion, winner of the Cape Epic, and member of the Specialized Factory mountain bike team. His teammate, Chris Blevins though a few years younger than the other three has racked up a national title list in the twenties and also medaled at the World Championships. With Payson the current defending XC Marathon national champion, Howard current XC national champion, and Chris current STXC national champion, all three mountain bike titles were represented at this very laid back, fireside chat. It was a relatively typical offseason night for the four cyclists that involved a good number of brews, only this time it was caught on a recorder.
