Three tires, one incredible day at the track. At the scenic Burt Brothers Motorpark in Salt Lake City, we spent the day doing a good, old-fashioned Sailun tire test, putting three of Sailun Tire Americas' newest products – the Atrezzo SVA2 ultra-high-performance all-season tire, the Terramax AT2 all-terrain tire, and Terramax RT rugged-terrain tire – through their paces across asphalt, gravel, and rock, respectively. Each tire showed off its unique performance and character.We started with the Atrezzo SVA2, developed by the Chattanooga-based R&D team for North American roads. It features an asymmetrical tread design and Quiet Ride Technology for confident handling and a calm, composed feel.Next up was the Terramax AT2, designed for drivers who divide their time between the highway and off-road. But when John Reeves, Kristen's father and founder of the business, faced a health scare in the late '90s, they stepped in together and never looked back.Kent gave up a future in medicine to help his community stay on the road, learning every inch of the business from the ground up. Kristen brought her sharp attention to detail and managed the office, handling payroll, HR, and everything behind the scenes.In 2000, they officially bought the business. Lorsqu'un désaccord survenait, on jetait la pièce : si la tête apparaissait, l'empereur — donc la loi — semblait trancher. Si le navire gagnait, le sort en décidait autrement. Ce geste n'était pas seulement un jeu de hasard, mais une forme symbolique d'arbitrage, une manière de laisser le pouvoir ou les dieux choisir à notre place.Avec le temps, la pratique a traversé les siècles et les cultures. Au Moyen Âge, les chevaliers anglais utilisaient une coutume semblable appelée “cross and pile” : la “cross” (croix) figurait sur une face des pièces, tandis que “pile”, mot d'origine latine (pilum, signifiant “pilier” ou “tête de lance”), désignait le revers de la pièce, souvent orné d'un relief ou d'un poinçon. C'est de là que vient notre mot “pile”, pour désigner le côté opposé à “face”. Le terme est resté, même lorsque les motifs des pièces ont changé.Mais question, tirer à pile ou face offre t il exactement une chance sur deux de gagner. En théorie, c'est vrai : une pièce possède deux faces distinctes, et le hasard semble parfaitement équilibré. Pourtant, la science nuance cette idée. En 2007, une équipe de l'Université de Stanford dirigée par le mathématicien Persi Diaconis a démontré que le lancer d'une pièce n'est pas complètement aléatoire. À l'aide de caméras à haute vitesse et de modèles physiques, les chercheurs ont montré que le mouvement initial (vitesse, rotation, angle) influence légèrement le résultat. En moyenne, la pièce a environ 51 % de chances de retomber du même côté qu'elle occupait avant d'être lancée. Autrement dit, si vous la posez sur “pile” avant de la jeter, elle a une probabilité un peu plus élevée d'atterrir sur “pile”. Ce biais est minime, mais il existe.D'autres expériences, notamment celles menées par l'Université de Cambridge en 2023, ont confirmé cette légère asymétrie, liée non seulement à la dynamique du lancer, mais aussi à l'épaisseur et au centre de gravité de la pièce. Les pièces de monnaie ne sont pas parfaitement équilibrées : un côté est souvent plus lourd ou plus bombé, ce qui influe subtilement sur leur trajectoire. En pratique, ce déséquilibre reste imperceptible pour un humain.Ainsi, dans les conditions réelles — un lancer spontané, sans calcul ni force mesurée —, le résultat demeure quasi aléatoire, à environ 50/50.
