She Breaks Free....Ditch the Diet & Change Your Relationship with Food & Fitness
Have you ever felt like strength training is just too complicated to figure out? Like you need a fancy gym membership, tons of time, or expert-level knowledge just to get started? What if I told you that fat loss doesn't require hours of cardio — just a few simple strength moves each week can actually get you the results you're after? In today's episode, I'm breaking down a simple 3-part strength training plan designed to help you build confidence, consistency, and momentum — without the overwhelm. Whether you're brand new to lifting or just want something more doable, this one's for you.
Anyone missing out on some race training, like Pam, because of vacation, work, or illness, you'll be very grateful for Coach Dimity's stress-free, consistency-not-perfection wisdom. And once you're running the race, if you get momentarily sidelined, like Penny did due to dry heaves, you can tap into the grace and wisdom offered by the host duo. Finally, the gals give advice to anyone (including Annie), looking for the next competitive challenge. Before the hosts offer up answers (+ anecdotes!) around 07:34, Coach Dimity gives strength-training guidance to Sarah. Please call 470-BADASS1 (470-223-2771) to record your question. Last week we decided that Brakken needs to suck it, sign up for a race, and start training seriously. Today, we build him a 16 week training plan designed to address all the deficiencies he's developed over the past few years of half-assed training.
Strength training is integral in every workout routine — for building muscle, as well as tapping into the many ways it influences overall health. Yet lifting weights can be intimidating, especially if you're new to it. And even if you have experience, you want to make sure the efforts you're putting in are as effective as they can be. With that in mind, Jeff Rosga, CPT, joins us to talk about the movement patterns and other variables that form the backbone of a well-rounded and productive strength regimen. Real Life Runners I Tying Running and Health into a Family-Centered Life
In this episode, we draw an analogy between encountering a '404 Page Not Found' error on the web and hitting a plateau or decline in one's training plan, particularly for runners over 40. We discuss the changes in physiology and life circumstances that necessitate a new training approach, including changes in hormonal levels, stress management, and adjustments in workouts to reflect current fitness capabilities. We emphasize the importance of accepting these changes not as failures but as opportunities to redirect training strategies. The episode also highlights the mental shift from focusing on becoming thin to becoming strong, the need for proper nutrition, recovery, and addressing the stories we tell ourselves about our abilities and future potential. Encourage listeners to identify the 'broken links' in their training and find new paths forward.01:44 The Frustration of Broken Links and Training Plans02:32 Understanding the 404 Moment in Training05:48 Adapting to Physiological and Life Changes10:09 The Importance of Acceptance and Adaptation15:42 Case Study: Overcoming Training Plateaus20:44 The Role of Plateaus in Training25:19 Training with the Right Mentality26:04 The Importance of Recovery27:02 Balancing Intensity and Recovery29:27 Shifting Focus: From Thin to Strong36:50 The Power of Stories We Tell Ourselves37:28 Embracing New Training Methods Thanks for Listening!!Be sure to hit FOLLOW on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast player Leave a review on Apple Podcasts. In this episode, Nick and Garrett discuss the essential qualities needed to maximize personal growth and achieve one's God-given purpose. Inspired by a listener's question, they draw parallels between physical training and life development, emphasizing that mastering the basics is crucial before pursuing greatness. We highlight five key qualities that require no talent but are fundamental for success: a desire to grow, a willingness to learn, patience, hope, and having a relationship with Christ. We use the analogy of SEAL training to illustrate the importance of mastering these foundational elements, which they compare to the "basics" that soldiers must possess before advanced training. We emphasize that cultivating these qualities will not only enhance the listener's experience with the podcast but also significantly improve their approach to life. We also give the how to's to implement this and the steps you MUST take to fulfill your purpose and truly live an Impossible Life.If there was an episode that we'd want everyone to listen to before they dive deep on the podcast, this would be it.Click here to leave us a review on Spotify.Click here to leave us a review on Apple podcasts.Support The Impossible Life & Get Additional Insider Content by clicking here.GET IN TOUCHAdvertise on the podcast by clicking here. Women collectively “Catch Up” to men in their risk by age 60, largely because of the loss of estrogen. Based on studies from the American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session (April 2024) and the American Heart Association (2013, 2023). Changes in blood pressure, cholesterol, and visceral belly fat all seem to be a part of the menopause transition for many women. Women spend 40% or more of their lives post-menopause, that's a health risk if left unchecked. Women who have an early menopause, have even more time in their lives in post menopause. Many women are advised or think about weight loss, stress reduction. Very few women think about heart health risk and muscle loss. Yet, to define cardiovascular fitness is to talk about VO2 max. VO2 max measures oxygen consumption capacity or liters of oxygen the body consumes during exercise, expressed in ml/kg/min. For every 1 liter of oxygen consumed roughly 5 kcals are burned. Two components of VO2: The delivery of oxygen The extraction of oxygen from the tissues Heart health CAN decline rapidly after menopause… All statistics are based on historically what's been true… and we sometimes forget that if we choose not to participate in the same habits of past generations we don't have to get the same results. If you lose muscle, you lose VO2. If you lose VO2, you die tired, younger, sicker and fatter. Replacing the overemphasis on cardiovascular exercise which seems to be the first go-to for women, trainers, and physicians alike, with an equal emphasis on muscle is the first step. BUT.. that negates the fact that.. muscle-building exercise improves blood sugar levels, increase strength, stamina, power to inspire and motivate greater activity Training Plan to Avoid Risk of Heart Disease Post Menopause We also train wrong for women in midlife. Highs and lows are best for women midlife. Moderate-intensity exercise, a go-to for many women since the 80s, is actually an energy drain. Instead of reducing stress, it spikes cortisol, making fat loss and recovery harder. High intensity to toleration during perimenopause, not all women tolerate when hormones are doing the greatest fluctuation. There's a dance between the muscle, heart, bone benefits and the adrenals/cortisol response that has to be done. Post menopause hormones have stabilized and a woman is likely to tolerate more high intensity- not longer but with greater frequency from say 2 times a week to up to 4. This will help overcome the loss of fast twitch muscle fibers lost more quickly with age and without fast or powerful movements. The significant boost of growth hormone and testosterone that occurs with true high intensity exercise provides mitigation of cortisol. Let's review this again. Moderate exercise can occur for 3 reasons: Intentionally you unknowingly are trying to hit moderate level exercise You attend boot camp type classes that never allow complete recovery. They feel hard and high intensity for long periods of time, but in actuality, you're not reaching your peak capacity. You start out going at a low level but you either push it because you feel good or you go longer because it feels good, both result in a cardiac drift into the “no benefits zone” of moderate intensity exercise. What's the answer? Your midlife workout formula should look like this: 80% Low Intensity (walking, recovery movement)

The episode explores the science and benefits behind polarized training, which emphasizes easy and hard training days while minimizing moderate efforts. We highlight the importance of a training plan that fits one's individual life circumstances and current goals, especially for women over 40 experiencing hormonal changes.
