ABOUT THE EPISODE:Dr. Wes Robins sent me a text a few weeks ago, and I stopped what I was doing and read it twice. It was a piece he had written at his kitchen table while his daughters worked on an art project beside him, and it was one of the most honest and beautiful things I have read in all the years I have been doing this work. It started with four words: you are not broken. And it kept going from there.Wes has been a guest on this show before, and I have always admired how he shows up. No pretense, no pedestal. Just a real human being who has done his own hard work and now walks alongside young people and families who are doing theirs. Since we last spoke, he made the gut-wrenching decision to close the treatment center he poured five and a half years into, and what he learned on the other side of that loss is something I think every parent who has ever watched someone they love struggle needs to hear.He is back in private practice now, seeing clients out of a cool 60's ranch house in Alpharetta, GA. He works with young people, with parents, and with families who are trying to figure out how to stay present through things that feel impossible to witness. He's a Ph.D, but has officially taken on the designation of Soul Nurse, and once he explains it, you'll understand exactly what that means. This conversation goes places I did not expect. We talk about the piece Wes wrote for parents, and he reads it aloud, and I am not going to pretend I held it together. We get into the difference between empathy and presence, why watching your child suffer might be asking something of you that has nothing to do with them, and what it actually means to be the flight attendant when your kid is in turbulence. If you have ever felt like you were failing simply by not being able to fix this, this one is for you.YOU'LL LEARN:The wise words Dr. Wes wrote at his kitchen table that stopped me coldHow to think about psychedelics and plant medicines when your child is asking (or using them)The difference between empathy and presence, and why it mattersWhy your child's struggle may be your greatest spiritual teacherWhat being the flight attendant actually looks like when you are terrified yourselfEPISODE RESOURCES:WebsiteDr. Wes Robins Youtube ChannelDr. Wes LinkedIn ProfileEmail address: drwes@eternalstrength.comPsychology Today"When The Map Burns" This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Send us Fan MailDr. Beatriz (Bia) Labate — Brazilian anthropologist, prolific author of 29 books, and co-founder of the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines — joins Claudiu Murgan for a wide-ranging and intellectually rigorous conversation about the history, politics, and spiritual dimensions of sacred plant medicines. Drawing on 29 years of personal ayahuasca practice, decades of fieldwork across Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, and her pioneering work on social justice in the psychedelic field, Bia challenges mainstream narratives at every turn: the psychedelic renaissance is real, but only if you are telling the story from a Western biomedical perspective; prohibition is not simply about patents but is a centuries-old colonial legacy; and ayahuasca is a profound mirror, not a magic pill — as capable of inflating egos as it is of dissolving them. Candid, scholarly, and deeply passionate, this episode is an essential conversation for anyone who wants to understand what is really at stake in the global conversation about plant medicines. In today's episode I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with someone I respect in the medicine traditions of Mexico, my friend Kuauthli. Kuauhtli is a great-grandfather, who's gigantic heart, love for nature, impeccable positivity and unique humor has touched and transformed the lives of countless people around the globe. Kuauhtli's years of involvement in the movement for human rights and activities to preserve the indigenous ways of life served as preparation for his path bringing ceremonies around the world. In the nahuatl language Kuauhtli means ‘eagle'. Kuauhtli's love and devotion to Tonantzin, our sacred mother earth, and his many years of Sundance are an inspiration to many following the Red Road. For the past four decades, Kuauhtli has dedicated himself to conducting Mexica ceremonies of "Xochitl in Cuicatl" (Flower and Song), Native American Church tipi meetings, Temazcal (sweat lodge) and Mexica danza, contributing to the awakening and reconnection of humanity with Nature in 40 countries. In March of 2026, I'll be leading a retreat in Nosara Costa Rica with Kuauhtli and his partner Delfina. If you would like to inquire for more information, please reach out to me directly via email or instagram. @taylor.doretti or t@taylordoretti.com

Summary: Muahaha! Cower in fear, dear listeners, as Holly and Devin discuss villains… who need a paycheck too. Whether you've worked in Corporate America or just like to imagine hell as an office building, these books will be a home run. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:26): Holly discussed Sign Here by Claudia Lux, a satirical exploration of morality and corporate offices following Peyote Trip, a caseworker in the Deals Department of the fifth floor of Hell. Responsible for securing soups by making deals with humans desperate enough to sign away their afterlives, Peyote is on the cusp of a promotion. If he can sign up one more member of the Harrison family he'll get a “Complete Set” - five souls from the same lineage. Holly's key takeaways were: Hell's depiction as a monotonous office environment serves as a critique of bureaucratic inefficiencies and the dehumanizing aspects of corporate life. Peyote's journey reflects a deeper quest for self-understanding and the possibility of redemption, even within the confines of Hell. The novel explores the gray areas of morality, questioning the binary notions of good and evil through its characters' choices and motivations. The Harrison family's dynamics highlight the impact of generational secrets and the lengths individuals go to protect or escape their lineage. For Holly, the premise of the story was stronger than the execution. While it was entertaining throughout, the two storylines of Peyote in Helly and the Harrison Family on Earth don't come together as strongly and clearly as they could have. The Heart (13:20): Devin discussed Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer, a BookTok-sourced Romantasy following Evie Sage, a young woman lying in the magical kingdom of Rennedawn who is in desperate need of a job. After an unfortunate firing and a spell of bad luck, she stumbles into a chance encounter with The Villain and ends up hired as his personal assistant. While yes, there are body parts swinging from the ceiling, his castle runs much like any business and Evie can handle the paperwork. Devin's key takeaways were: This novel highlights a recent publishing trend of storylines and authors becoming popular on social media sites like TikTok before they are published, then being signed by publishing companies to ride the wave of their popularity. Pros include increased diversity and a resurgence of popularity of reading in the zeitgeist, but Holly and Devin review cons like rushed editing and expected tropes as well. Maehrer explores the idea that even villains deserve loyalty, empathy, and maybe even a decent lunch break. It's a workplace comedy... if the workplace had torture chambers. The absurdity of running an evil empire like an office is what makes the “villainous job” theme shine. Capitalism meets chaos magic. While not spicy at all, there are romantic elements to the story. The push-pull between danger and attraction for Evie and The Villain is delicious, especially when the boss could literally smite someone - but instead just broods silently when Evie talks to another guy. Hot On the Shelf (35:54): Holly: My Friends by Fredrik Backman Devin: That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Human by Kimberly Lemming What's Making Our Hearts Race (41:47): Holly: The Last of Us Season 2 on HBO Max Devin: Volunteering in her local community Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

From games of chicken on private planes to one member surviving a private plane crash, the Eagles as a group very narrowly survived themselves. During their early days, they dosed out on Peyote and reimagined and reconfigured a new FM sound for the ages that would result in unimaginable success and excess. When their debut record was released on Geffen Records in 1972, America couldn't have been more ready for their breezy, countrified Southern California sound. Yet something else came with their that heady, golden age of California in the 1970s, that era of endless cocaine, groupies, money, and excess beyond anyone's wildest dreams. As the Eagles would soon learn, that “peaceful easy feeling” they were peddling wasn't built to last. This week, I'm taking you inside my Costa Rica adventure, where I said yes to Peyote and ended up laughing, crying, and questioning all my life choices—sometimes all at once. After a recent Ketamine therapy session cracked my heart wide open (in a good way), I found myself craving a deeper spiritual connection and little space from it all… so apparently, that meant hopping on a plane and trying a new plant medicine. My experience was… well, you'll find out. Somewhere between the jungle bugs and spiritual breakthroughs, I also may have caught feelings for someone new. But it's fine. No big deal. Very informative episode today! I learned so much and hope you do too. We explore the history of human psychedelic usage, and also dive into the origin, properties, dangers, and benefits of the most popular psychedelics today: LSD, MDMA, Magic Mushrooms, DMT, and Peyote. I loved psychedelics before this episode, and love them even more after learning what I share this week.
