Crucial Aspect of FriendshipsGod is a relational being It is part of His nature ~ Triune God God is perfectly in communion with Himself from all eternity Gospel of John is helpful in thinking about this; constant refrain about the love between the Father and the Son Also see this in His interaction with His people Constant desire on the part of God to be in communion/fellowship with His people [Opening of Genesis to theclose of Revelation] Isaiah 41:8 – But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend; Exodus 33:11 – Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. WhenMoses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart fromthe tent. Jesus ~ friend of sinners (Matt. 11:19) & disciples (Luke 12:4)As those made in the image of God, we were created as relational beings Contains both a vertical and horizontal component to it Genesis 2:18 – Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helperfit for him.” Adam was not lonely because he was imperfect, but because he was perfect [to be perfect was to be relational]All of this to say that friendships are part of what makes us human; or, to say it differently, we need friends to be fullyhumanQuotes on the significance of friendship: Aristotle – “friendship is one soul abiding in two bodies” Gregor of Nazianzus (4 th c. church father) – “If anyone were to ask me, ‘What is the best thing in life?' Iwould answer, ‘Friends.'” Kevin DeYoung – “Friendship is the most important – least talked about relationship in the church.” Dr. Joel Beeke – “Friendship is one of the primary means God uses to strengthen His people.” Jonathan Edwards – “Friendship is the highest happiness of all moral agents.” JC Ryle – “This world is full of sorrow because it is full of sin. It is a dark place. It is a lonely place. It is a disappointing place. The brightest sunbeam in it is a friend. Friendship halves our troubles and doubles our joys.” Drew Hunter – “Friendship is the ultimate end of our existence and our highest source of happiness.  Friendship – with one another and with God – is the supreme pleasure of life, both now and forever, and no one can fully enjoy life without it.” John Newton – “I think to a feeling mind there is no temporal pleasure equal to the pleasure of friendship.” Aelred of Rievaulx (12 th c. author) – “Absolutely no life can be pleasing without friends.”But this ideal is not always the reality in which life is lived: 20% of adults say they have no close friend to discuss personal problems with 20% of adults admit to feeling lonely at any given time “Rent-a-friend” business reveals the need for friendsNext, we will turn our attention to the careful cultivation of friendships Throughout we will be considering the teaching from the book of ProverbsGreater care needs tobe given at each levelyou move down Hugh Black wrote that “the Proverbs are a treatise on friendship.”For more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. Life comes and says calmly and confidently, "Ask what I shall give you," and the door opens out into the place of your asking. I know that this may seem at first an absurd statement that what we seek we find, and where we knock it is opened to us, but if you think a little you will see that it is true. We may not get the exact thing we most desire. The particular object on which we have set our hearts may be out of our reach, but we do get along the line of our desire.

Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, and (if you are felling inspired) leaving us a positive review at the iTunes store is always greatly appreciated. Thank you. Today’s reading was edited and adapted from The Open Door by Hugh Black, published in 1914. Youth stands at the magic door of life. It never remains the same, but seems to alter with each person. This is not strange, since youth itself does not stay the same. We speak of youth as if it were always of one texture and color, whereas it is a time of chaotic contradictions. We talk of the hopefulness of youth, which is true enough, and yet some have known a childhood full of bitter despair never again equaled. We call it a time of impractical radicalism, and yet it is curiously conservative. We speak of its blithe carelessness, and yet it is sometimes marked by moods of brooding sadness. Youth is like an April day flecked with alternate sun and shower. And whatever youth does, it does with zest: it believes more valiantly, doubts more tragically, hopes more buoyantly, fears more poignantly than ever again. All this because it is a time of dawning self-expression. It is for the first time fully conscious of being alive...

Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: Who can set limits to what is? Who can draw a line and declare that within its boundaries lies all that is possible? Who can say what forces there are unknown that one day may be utilized by us all? The world is not one definite thing, but is whatever we (with knowledge, courage, and faith) are able to make it. When we reach the borders, there is ever an open door into a larger place. The world is just as big as we are big enough to inhabit. Like all true things, this idea is not completely new. We have always known it in other regions of human experience: aesthetically the world is to each of us what we are able to appreciate. How different a single scene may appear to different views. Buttercups and daisies, the common flowers of the field, may be a delight to a child and a nuisance to a farmer. A single flower is one thing to a botanist, another to an artist, another to a gardener, and another to a lover. Visit Our Sponsor: Shop Carbona.com with the coupon code LIVING for 20% off.

Motivational Podcast Excerpt: Welcome to the Inspirational Living podcast. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. If you would like to support our podcast with a one-time donation, you can do so by visiting LivingHour.org/donate. Thank you. Today’s reading was edited and adapted from the book entitled Work by Hugh Black, published in 1903. Life is more than money and trade, more than business and cash transactions. If there were not more than this in our lives (nobler thoughts and larger endeavors), society could not have existed for so long. No individual can be wholly paid in money for their work, if it be true work. We cannot buy love, nor pay for it — and without love in all its grades and forms, our social life, and even our business life, are failures. Faithful dealing between people cannot be bought and sold. Such work is a spiritual thing (as well as a material), and money has no currency in such trafficking. We need an ideal to save our lives from deadly dullness. We need the light of the ideal to inspire us and to ennoble our activities. Otherwise, what poor petty drudgery it all is, a meaningless bending of the neck to the yoke. We must make all our occupations truly spiritual, inspired by spiritual motives. To spiritual beings like you and I there is no detail of life which doesn’t have spiritual significance. And the failure of our days is due to our neglect of the unseen in dealing with the seen, our forgetfulness to live every common hour in the power of an endless life. Viewed practically, and put into simple language, the ideal of work is faithfulness — work done according to a high standard which we ourselves set up. The problem is that we have such easy and elastic consciences, and such low selfish standards! What will get by, what will do the turn, is often all that we aim at. We do not put our conscience into our work.

Right now, for a limited time, Blinkist has a special offer for our audience. Go to Blinkist.com/living to start a free 7 day trial. Today’s reading was edited and adapted from the book “Happiness” by Hugh Black, published in 1911. There is an art of happiness, which is like the art of living. No list of rules can cover all the ground — for life does not go in straight lines, and never runs exactly according to schedule. There is also the personal equation, the peculiar angle from which each person looks at life. Now, it’s true that no art can be taught beyond certain broad principles and general rules. The rest has to come through constant practice and through the enrichment of the mind, aided by inspiration and example and a little counsel. It’s also true that some get more from teaching than others — though all can get something, if only through the opportunity to reconsider methods and examine results. Everyone will probably acknowledge that they have not completely mastered the art of happiness, and that they might have made more of their lives if they had known better. So, with that in mind, there are some general rules I’d like to lay down, each of which will apply to many people, though (of course) not to all.

Listen to episode 185 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Life is an Adventure: Dare to Live It. Adapted from The Open Door by Hugh Black. Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: In faithless and bitter moods, people may sometimes say that there is nothing new under the sun, though we know as fact that there is nothing but the new. Dr. Johnson may say that a blade of grass is always a blade of grass whether in one country or another, but we know that there are no two blades of grass alike even in the same field. Life speaks to us with many voices, and not one of them without significance. It speaks to us in the world without and in the world within, by the infinitely little and the infinitely great. The human comedy appeals to laughter and tears, pity and pride; and above all it calls to us to be more than mere spectators. We too are in the play, and must make our part in it as it goes along unrehearsed. By faith the human mind makes its journey through the world for knowledge, and by faith the soul makes its journey through life. The true heart is not afraid to make either journey, and tastes the relish of living. Generations ago artists used to discuss solemnly and tragically the great question of whether life is worth living, and wrote books and articles and poems on the subject. The only answer of any value was that of the rogue, who replied that it all depended on the liver. The jaundiced eye will see everything blurred in a haze of yellow. The value of life will only be known by living, and the adventurous nature has at least all the chance there is. Related Motivational Podcasts: Dare to Laugh & Live Fully Dare to Love

Listen to episode 126 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Artists, Writers & The Power of the Work Habit. Adapted from the book “Work” by Hugh Black. Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: Careless slovenly work is responsible for more failures in art than any other cause. Blindly trusting what they call their genius, many a gifted artist has never come to success because they have never learned to toil. It is one of the subtlest temptations in all productive work, whether it be painting pictures, or writing books, or pursuing any subject of study, to simply rely on happy inspirations, with the result that casual efforts alternate with long spells of indolence. There is no finer lesson from the lives of many scientific workers than that of the patient investigation and tireless labor with which they pursue their branch of truth. Darwin refers to this as a necessity if we are to advance any science at all. To accept our work as part of our duty, to cultivate it as a habit, is to safeguard our lives from many a mistake and error, and even from many a sin. Every individual must bring themselves into discipline before they become a perfect instrument for their work. No great work of art is possible without previous training in the art of work. When the habit of industry is ingrained in your nature, you have mastered the art, although your methods of working may be peculiar to yourself. Listen to episode 54 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Spiritual Growth & The Limits of Friendship. Adapted from the book Friendship by Hugh Black. Spiritual Podcast Excerpt: Human love can ask too much, and it asks too much when it would break down the individual will and conscience. We cannot renounce our rights as living souls without losing our souls. No person can pay the debt of life for us. No individual can take the burden of life from us. To no person can we hand over the reins unreservedly. It would be cowardice, and cowardice is sin. The first axiom of the spiritual life is the sacredness of our individuality. We must respect each other's personality. Even when we have rights over other people, these rights are strictly limited, and carry with them a corresponding duty to respect their rights also. The one intolerable despotism in the world is the attempt to put a yoke on the souls of others, and there are some forms of intimacy which approach that despotism. To transgress the moral bounds set to friendship is to make the highest forms of friendship impossible; for these are only reached when free individuals meet in the unity of the spirit.....
