Episode 169 Chapter 28, Moog Analog Synthesizers, Part 2. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. George was quite busy between "All Things Must Pass" and "The Concert for Bangladesh". However, many of the things he played on were not under his own name! We look at two projects where George was a significant contributer: Gary Wright's "Footprint", and Billy Preston's "I Wrote a Simple Song". Excellent playing, and a link between George's Beatles guitar-playing, his work on "All Things Must Pass", and his turn on John Lennon's "Imagine" (when he finally turned back to his own projects with "Living in the Material World!")
It's my pleasure to have Colin Wright, Cole West, on the podcast today. When asked about why he decided to join today, he said there are too many lessons from his father, Gary Wright. A Famous Lost Words drinking game? Is this REALLY a good idea? Tom proposes a non-alcoholic version that is based solely on his own (many) verbal quirks. For our last episode of season 9, we begin with Carly Simon in conversation with broadcaster Ingrid Schumacher in 1987. This was a great year for Carly because she had just worked on the soundtrack for the movie “Heartburn” and her new album “Coming Around Again” would prove to be a comeback for her. She talks about work with Mike Nichols on “Heartburn”, tussling with Clive Davis on song choices and how her close friend Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis convinced her to write a book. Following that is a really fun encounter with the guys from Train, from a morning show encounter with Roger Ashby and Marilyn Denis. The interview, from 2012, captures the goofiness of lead singer Pat Monahan. Then, we have an early ‘80s chat with Gary Wright, who passed away in September of 2023. Gary only had three significant chart hits, but he was a well-respected musician who worked with George Harrison on a number of projects. He also made synthesizers a staple on Top 40 radio. We close out the show with a great chat with Triumph, a band that started in a bowling alley in Mississauga, Ontario forge their place in rock history. The Canadian power trio are legendary here in their home country, but also had a great run in the U.S. and beyond. Bassist Mike Levine has a ton of fun chatting with broadcaster Rick Ringer in this very entertaining and lively 1983 interview.

On November 2, 1984, fifty-two-year-old Velma Barfield was executed by lethal injection at North Carolina's Central Prison, bringing an end to years of legal appeals and emotional debates over the death penalty and how, when, and to whom it gets applied. For six years, Barfield had sat on death row following her conviction for the poisoning murder of her boyfriend Stewart Taylor in 1976; however, during her trial she confessed to killing at least four other people.Velma Barfield's trial came at a time in the United States when Americans were just beginning to grapple with the concept of a serial killer, and the idea that a woman could commit such heinous acts seemed entirely inconceivable. Although woman had been sentenced to death for murder before in the US, none had confessed to methodically killing multiple people in such a callous way and for such a trivial reason. The debate only became more complicated following her death sentence, an already complicated subject among Americans that became exponentially so in 1984, when Barfield's case and personal story became a major talking point for politicians running for office around the state.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for Research!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1984. Gary Wright and David Kaczynski were unwittingly placed on opposing sides of the longest-running, most expensive, criminal investigation in American history. Gary is a survivor of an explosive package sent by Ted Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber. Kaczynski's brother, David, reached out to the victims of these crimes leading to an unlikely friendship between Gary and David. In this moving and very personal exchange, Gary and David discuss the different ways in which each was challenged by violence and how their friendship has grown in awareness of the power of forgiveness and the deeper meaning of our shared humanity—a vital message for Yom Kippur. They are introduced by K.I. Senior Rabbi Amy Bernstein.

Another mind bending episode. Luana Anders is our pal on the flipside who generates the guest list. In this case it was someone who passed away recently, musician Gary Wright. Gary was famous for his song "Dream Weaver." He worked with George Harrison and others in a long career. Jennifer did a private session with him in his home a few years ago, and he wanted to talk about his journey to the flipside. He talked about who greeted him there, and what his experience was like. Gary was a fan of the Indian pandit Yogananda. His book "Autobiography of a Yogi" changed Gary's life because he said it inspired the song Dream Weaver. We've chatted with Yogananda before, I asked him questions about his teacher and other events in his life. It's a mind bending thing he says when I asked him "What do I tell friends of mine in India about the fact that we've spoken to you?" He said "They have me on a pedestal. You need to have me in your heart to speak to me." He answered that question before I asked it by taking Jennifer's hand. Luana then took us to "a concert." I had been asked about a number of people who passed recently, so I wondered if this "concert" was so we could talk to them. Indeed, she brought forth Tony Bennett. Tony mentioned the time that we met backstage on the tonight show, talked about my healthy head of hair - which allowed me to talk about the black wig he was wearing for that show in the 1980's. Later his son switched it to a grayer one - (or he stopped wearing one, I don't know) but it was funny because he brought it up. Then we spoke to Walter Matthau. Indeed, I worked as his dialog coach on the Charles Grodin film Movers and Shakers, and he refers to our long conversations. That brought forth Gene Wilder to remind me that we had dinner together (yes, we did with Louise Lasser and Charles Grodin, and I recalled his thick white sox.) Then Jimmy Buffett stopped by and talked about when he went over to the flipside, he walked onstage to a concert gig. It's often reported by musicians - the feeling of walking onstage and being met by fans and other musicians. He said "It was like playing a 12 hour gig." He talked about feeling all the love from his fans, and had words for his family. For other interviews with musicians, take a look at the book TUNING INTO THE AFTERLIFE which is mostly about them. Thanks for tuning in.

After that, they discuss the ineptitude of the Indiana Hoosiers to move the football with both quarterbacks in Saturday's loss to Ohio State. Additionally, they discuss Purdue losing to Fresno State and how Clemson's loss last night impacts Notre Dame. (25:55-42:35) – Jaguars.com's senior writer John Oehser joins Query & Company to highlight the preseason topics of discussion for the Jaguars before their week one game against the Colts, debate if we've seen enough from Trevor Lawrence to say that he's “the guy” of the future, explains how the Colts offense can expose the Jaguars defense, and how the offensive line should perform without Cam Robinson at left tackle. (42:36-46:31) – Jake and Jimmy wrap up the first hour of the program by sharing some opinions on how the Colts should have operated prior to the start of the saga. (46:32-1:11:35) – Yesterday Shane Steichen provided an update on Shaq Leonard in terms of where he is at in the concussion protocol. After Jake explaining his Goonies story that he teased in the first segment of the program, he and Jimmy discuss some of the storylines that they feel like haven't been talked about enough. (1:11:36-1:29:57) – Rob Blackman of the Boilermaker Sports Network joins Jake and Jimmy on Query & Company to share his observations on how to take Purdue's loss to Fresno State on Saturday, if he expects the offense to be as high powered as it was Saturday on a weekly basis, why offensive coordinator Graham Harrell was on the field versus up in the booth, and what he made of the newcomers to Purdue's starting roster on offense and defense. (1:29:58-1:33:57) – The one o'clock hour concludes by playing Deion Sanders pregame speech prior to Colorado's win over the weekend against TCU. Jake and Jimmy react to it and discuss how Colorado is such a perfect fit for Coach Prime. (1:33:58-2:01:44) – The Dean, Mike Chappell, of CBS4 and FOX59 shares what he did before covering the Colts with Jimmy and Jake on Query & Company. Additionally, they discuss how much it would stink for Shaq Leonard to miss week one after such a promising training camp, if he believes that the Colts want to sign Jonathan Taylor to an extension and tries to pinpoint an area where Chris Ballard improved the roster after their four-win campaign last year. (2:01:45-2:11:34) – Over the weekend the music industry lost a legend in Jimmy Buffett. Jake and Jimmy share their thoughts on Jimmy Buffett along with Jake sharing something that he remembers regarding Jimmy's concert when 9/11 happened. (2:11:35-2:16:59) – Today's show ends with the Eddie playing one of Jake's favorite songs. We lost three musicians over the weekend, a look on the lives of Jimmy Buffett, Gary Wright and Steve Harwell
Hired as a tape op by EMI in February 1970, Leckie quickly found himself among rock royalty when his career began with work on Ringo's Sentimental Journey, followed quickly after with McCartney. But his major immersion with the cream of rock's musicians soon came with the All Things Must Pass project, placing him at the service of George Harrison and Phil Spector and with a team that included Ringo, Klaus Voormann, Eric Clapton, The Dominoes, Gary Brooker, Peter Frampton, Phil Collins, Gary Wright, Billy Preston and Badfinger, among others. This conversation focuses on that landmark album. Joining as co-host is author/producer Jerry Hammack (The Beatles Recording Reference Manual series), with a cameo from Luther Russell. Jerry's latest book has just been published: Home Studio Recording - The Complete Guide. John was a previous guest discussing the making of John and Yoko's respective Plastic Ono Band albums, as well as alongside his previous collaborators Derek Forbes (Simple Minds) and Ian McNabb (Icicle Works) for a conversation on Peter Jackson's Get Back film. His excellent recall of events he witnessed as well as insights as someone with some amazing career achievements (Roy Harper, Be Bop Deluxe, Pink Floyd, Wings, Radiohead, XTC, Stone Roses, and so on) to his credit make this conversation something special.
