8. CompelApollos did not preach solely to dispense information. He passionately proclaimed the truth in order to convince his hearers and convert them to the way of God's truth:Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus. (Acts 18:24–28)9. DisciplePaul understood the continuing and cumulative effect of multiplication; so he heartily commended it to Timothy, the third of five generations up to that time (Christ, Paul, Timothy, faithful men, and others):And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. (2 Tim. 2:2)10.TrembleIsaiah exemplified a humble believer who took God and his word very seriously (see Isa. 6:1–13):But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. 4. ObeyCaleb proved to be special (in contrast to the disobedient nation) because of his totally obedient response to God's commands:None of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. Obey the WordThroughout his New Testament writings, the apostle John summarized a Christian's obligation to obey the Scriptures. He made it clear that walking in the ways of the word was not optional.First, Christ said that if one loves him, that person will keep his commandments (John 14:15, 21, 23). On the other hand, the one who does not love him will not keep his words (John 14:24). A Christian's obedience to the Bible demonstrates one's love for Christ and the genuineness of one's salvation.Second, John clearly stated that a Christian's duty is to walk in the same manner as Christ walked (1 John 2:6). God demands obedience to his word.Third, John broadly defined love in unmistakable terms: “This is love, that we walk according to his commandments” (2 John 6).Fourth, John experienced great delight in watching and hearing of Christians obeying God's word: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth” (3 John 4).Finally, John announced the ultimate distinction of an obedient Christian—the Savior's blessing (Rev. 1:3). Now, to be more specific, Scripture provides a profile comprising at least ten exemplary characteristics of what John envisioned. For more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. 7. View of salvation. The goal of Mormon salvation is notabout escaping wrath as much as it is about maximizing ourgrowth and ensuring our happiness. Salvation is finding ourway back to God the Father and recalling our forgotten firstestate as his premortal spirit children.Mormon theology teaches that we cannot receive an eternalreward by our own unaided efforts. In some respects, salvation is based on what we have earned, but what weearn is by grace. How this plays out in Mormon life may differfrom person to person, but they stress that the gift of theHoly Ghost is conditional upon continued obedience.Mormons must keep the First Principles and Ordinances, which consist of the Ten Commandments, tithing, chastity, and the “Word of Wisdom” which prohibits tobacco, coffee, tea, alcohol, and illegal narcotics.Temples are also important in Mormon doctrine and practice.Couples must be married in a Mormon temple to have aneternal marriage, and every Mormon must be baptized inone of their 135 (and counting) authorized Temples. Becauseof the importance of baptism in the Temple, baptisms for thedead are extremely common. Mormons keep detailedgenealogical records so that their ancestors can be properlybaptized. By one estimate more than 100 million deceasedpersons have been baptized by proxy baptism in Mormontemples. Those who received this baptism are free in theafterlife to reject or accept what has been done on theirbehalf.Death in Mormon thinking is seen as another beginning, complete with opportunities to respond to postmortempreaching in the world to come. We will live in the spiritworld, and at some point our spirit and body will be reunitedforever. There are four divisions in the afterlife. The Lake of Fire isreserved for the Devil, his demons, and those who committhe unpardonable sin. The Telestial Kingdom is where thewicked go. It is a place of suffering but not like the Lake ofFire. Most people go to the Telestial Kingdom where they areoffered salvation again. The lukewarm-not quite good, notquite evil-go to the Terrestrial Kingdom when they die. ThisKingdom is located on a distant planet in the universe. TheCelestial Kingdom is for the righteous. Here God's peoplelive forever in God's presence. We will live as gods and livewith our spouses and continue to procreate. This is the aimand the end of Mormon salvation.ConclusionChristians can be thankful for Mormon friends and familymembers who are good neighbors and share many of thesame ethical standards and moral commitments. ButMormonism and Christianity are not the same. Far from it.Though the language sounds similar at times, the beliefs arequite distinct. Mormons do not understand history, God,man, salvation, heaven, hell, the cross, Jesus, or the Trinityas the canonical Scriptures teach, nor do they agree with theconciliar doctrine taught by the one, holy, catholic, apostolicchurch over the last two thousand years.Discussion based on Kevin DeYoung is the senior pastor at Christ CovenantChurch (PCA) in Matthews, North Carolina and associateprofessor of systematic theology at ReformeFor more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. 4. View of God. In Mormon thought, God has a physicalbody. According to Doctrine and Covenants, “The Father hasa body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's; the Sonalso;” but “The Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh andbones, but is a personage of Spirit.”Whether God the Father is self-existent is unclear. There wasa long procession of gods and fathers leading up to ourHeavenly Father. Brigham Young once remarked, “How manyGods there are, I do not know. But there never was a timewhen there were not Gods and worlds.” What is clearer isthat the Mormon God is not a higher order or a differentspecies than man. God is a man with a body of flesh andbones like us.Mormons do not believe in the Trinity. They affirm the unityof three personages, but the unity is a relational unity inpurpose and mind, not a unity of essence. The threeseparate beings of the Godhead are three distinct Gods.5. View of Christ. Mormons believe Jesus is Redeemer,God, and Savior. He is endless and eternal, the only begottenson of the Father. Through Jesus, the Heavenly Father hasprovided a way for people to be like him and to live with himforever. But this familiar language does not mean the same thing toMormons as it does to Christians. Jesus was born of theFather just like all spirit children. God is his Father in thesame way he is Father to all. Whatever immortality orGodhood Jesus possesses, they are inherited attributes andpowers. He does not share the same eternal nature as theFather. Jesus may be divine, but his is a derivative divinity.Mormon theology teaches, in the words of Joseph Smith, that Jesus Christ is “God the Second, the Redeemer.”For more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. 3. View of man. According to Mormon theology, men andwomen are the spirit sons and daughters of God. We lived ina premortal spirit existence before birth. In this first estatewe grew and developed in preparation for the second estate. In this second estate we walk by faith. A veil of forgetfulnesshas been placed over our minds so we don't remember whatwe did and who we used to be in our premortal existence. Our purpose in this life is to grow and mature in a physicalbody to prepare us for our final eternal state.Mormons do not believe in human depravity. We are notimplicated in Adam's fall. We are basically good in our eternalnature, but prone to error in our mortal nature. The human isa being in conflict, but also a being with infinite potential.4. A quick note on secondary sources: Christian materials donot always treat Mormonism fairly or go the extra mile topresent Mormon ideas as a Mormon would recognize them. One book that does is Andrew Jackson's MormonismExplained: What Latter-day Saints Teach and Practice. I alsorecommend A Different Jesus? The Christ of the Latter-DaySaints by BYU professor Robert Millet. Richard Mouwconcedes too much in his Foreword and Afterword, but it isstill helpful to get Mormon Christology from a Mormonhimself.1. View of history. In Mormon thinking, the rise ofMormonism was not merely a reformation or renewal of thechurch. It was a complete restoration. Following the death ofChrist's apostles, the church fell into complete apostasy. Thechurch lost divine authority and true doctrine. There is nounbroken continuity from the early church to the present.Christianity, for almost all of its history, was false and withoutthe truth—until Joseph Smith and his revelation. Mormonismnot only rejects historic orthodox Christianity, the entirereligion is based on the need for such repudiation.2. View of revelation. Mormons believe the Bible (the KJVversion), but do not consider it inerrant. Neither do theyconsider the Bible complete. What makes Mormonismunique is their belief in continuing revelation sustainedthrough prophets, seers, and revelators. So while Mormonsaffirm the Bible, they also affirm the inspiration of the Bookof Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of GreatPrice. Through an elaborate hierarchy of President, FirstPresidency, Twelve Apostles, First Quorum of the Seventy, and Second Quorum of the Seventy, Mormons can receiveauthoritative interpretations and new authoritativerevelations.Kevin DeYoung is the senior pastor at Christ CovenantChurch (PCA) in Matthews, North Carolina and associateprofessor of systematic theology at Reformed TheologicalSeminary. For more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. We've been working through 2 Timothy on Sunday evenings. Last week I preached from 2 Timothy 3:6-9. It's a passage–like many in the pastoral epistles–that deals with false teaching. Paul warns against the folly of false teaching (and against the folly of falling for it).Which leads to the question: what is false teaching and how do we spot it?Obviously, there is no foolproof scheme for identifying false teaching. Biblical discernment takes years of prayer, preaching, and practice. But there are certain questions that may be help us sift the good from the bad. Here are 15 discernment diagnostic questions I suggested to my congregation.10. Does it promote an unmediated approach to spirituality? Mysticism, in its technical sense, can be defined as an approach to God apart from mediation. False spirituality tries to foster intimacy with God that does not go through the mediated revelation of Scripture and does not lead one to the mediation of Christ on the cross.11. Does the false teaching traffic in under-defined terms and slogans? Liberalism starts with an inattention to words. It is the triumph of orthodoxy to be careful with language.12. Does the teaching neglect the need for repentance? Beware the feel good invitation for everyone to come to the wide open arms. The coming of the Kingdom is not good news for sinners. It is good news for sinners who repent.13. Does the false teaching or teacher seem obsessed about one person, one doctrine, or one idea? An unsolicited exposé running into the hundreds of pages likely reveals more about the author than the subject.14. Does it result in an unbalanced presentation of the truth? True Christianity walks the tight rope between complementary biblical truths—truth and grace, Christ as God and man, salvation by faith alone and the necessity of the obedience of the Christian. It was usually the heretics who were guilty of resolving biblical tensions in ways that were too neat and tidy.15. Does the teaching fit with the Bible's story line of sin and salvation? How can a holy God dwell in the midst of an unholy people? If the teaching doesn't make sense as a plot line in that story, I'm suspicious.Mature Christians do not cast a critical eye on everyone and everything a hair's breadth different from them. But they are discerning, and they are careful. Guard your heart. Guard your home. Guard the good deposit. For more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. Biblical discernment takes years of prayer, preaching, and practice. But there are certain questions that may be help us sift the good from the bad. Here are 15 discernment diagnostic questions I suggested to my congregation.7. Does the teaching involve secrets? This was the appeal of Gnosticism. It purported to lead the initiate into the realm of secret knowledge. This is what makes me nervous about Masons, Mormons, and even many fraternities and sororities. Unless national security is involved, be wary of groups that are held together by tightly held secrets. Books with “secret” in the title are usually suspect too (Lesslie Newbigin's The Open Secret being the exception that proves the rule).8. Does it rely on a cartoon view of God? False teaching tends to cast God as either as a autocratic strongman or a friendly face passing out beads at Woodstock? By contrast, the God of the Bible shines forth with (to use Jonathan Edwards' phrase) a host of diverse excellencies.9. Does the teaching use big themes to negate specific verses? We should always interpret Scripture with Scripture, but we must not allow amorphous themes like love or justice or grace to flatten the contours of Scripture. For more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. The Israel of God: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow by O. Palmer Robertson Proposition #5: Rather than understanding predictions about the "return" of "Israel" to the "land" in terms of a geo-political reestablishment of the state of Israel, these prophecies are more properly interpreted as finding consummate fulfillment at the "restoration of all things" that will accompany the resurrection of believers at the return of Christ (Acts 3:21; Rom. 8:22-23). Proposition #4: The land of the Bible served in a typological role as a model of the consummate realization of the purposes of God for his redeemed people that encompasses the whole of the cosmos. Because of the inherently limited scope of the land of the Bible, it is not to be regarded as having continuing significance in the realm of redemption other than its function as a teaching model. The Israel of God: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow by O. The Israel of God: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow by O. Palmer Robertson Proposition #2: The modern Jewish state is not a part of the messianic kingdom of Jesus Christ. Even though it may be affirmed that this particular civil government came into being under the sovereignty of the God of the Bible, it would be a denial of Jesus' affirmation that his kingdom is "not of this world order" (John 18:36) to assert that this government is a part of his messianic kingdom. Our friends at City Cast Austin and City Cast Houston tell us it's worth every step. So while we wait for official confirmation, host Lindsay Van Allen is chatting with our Texan hosts Nikki DaVaughn and Raheel Ramzanali to figure out why this roadside stop has a cult-like following and whether this Lone Star staple can win over the Treasure Valley.
