If you are a parent of a neurodivergent kid with a diagnosed learning disability, you likely have had experience with Individualized Education Plans, otherwise known as IEPs. And if this is you, my hunch is you have some feelings about IEPs and the whole process — the stresses, the unknowns, the fact that it might feel like you have to understand a completely different language just to get the services and supports your child needs and deserves in schools.I invited occupational therapist Beth Liesenfeld of The IEP Lab to answer your questions around how parents can better prepare for an IEP meeting, what actually makes a good IEP, and how we can go about making changes on an IEP if we realize the accommodations aren't being effective or if a school isn't following through in a way the IEP outlines.Beth is an incredibly knowledgeable expert on the subject of IEPs, and as you'll hear, she's truly passionate about providing “insider” information of the school's process and culture to parents in order to increase collaboration between parents and school staff. Through her school experience, Beth saw inequity in parents' ability to advocate for a quality IEP for their child and now teaches parents a 4-step process to effectively advocate for their children within the schools through online workshops and interactive, supportive online courses.Beth Liesenfeld, MOT, OTR/L is an occupational therapist passionate about providing “insider” information of the school's process and culture to parents in order to increase collaboration between parents and school staff! It can be difficult to secure accommodations and services for your child at school. It requires that many people agree on a shared vision and how to make that student's vision for their education a reality through necessary support. Getting everyone on the same page is key, along with focusing on a few priorities in the here and now. In this episode of Beautifully Complex, I'm joined by Beth Liesenfeld of The IEP Lab. Beth shares her 3-part process to setting priorities for your child around school/education. She walks us through taking those priorities and creating a vision statement to share with your child's school team to help everyone collaborate for a common goal.
Beth Liesenfeld was an OT that provided school-based supports for years. She observed families that got what they wanted and deserved and families that didn't. She made notes of her observations and started helping families advocate more effectively with her experiences and observations! Join Beth and me for a co-hosted/co-published podcast on Advocacy from the Inside Out. We'll talk about how parents can best advocate… and so much more! As a mother of twins with ADHD symptoms, I know what it means to parent a child who does not fit into the ‘box' modern society has put children into. My mission is to help other parents of “that kid” feel less alone, more confident and more equipped by asking the tough questions to the professionals, gathering tools and resources and connecting with other moms who are wrestling with the same struggles. If recording my journey as I seek a clear starting point, community and effort to normalize a life with children who are at times highly emotional, unregulated, unfocused, or the opposite- hyper focused, supports at least one parent, then my time is not wasted. And if it doesn't, well, there's documented proof that moms deserve a glass of wine. Cheers Thanks for listening! It means so much to us that you listened to our podcast!
