Smallholder farmers are the unsung heroes of our food system. Tilling tiny plots, they produce a staggering one-third of the world's food and up to 80% of the food supply in regions like sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. But these vital contributors face immense challenges: such as climate change, pests, insufficient finances, and limited education and training. On this episode of Growing Impact, we're revisiting the story of PlantVillage, a project funded as a seed grant by IEE in 2016. Its aim was to empower smallholder farmers with knowledge through smartphones and machine learning. Since its creation, PlantVillage has gained strong support from organizations worldwide and has built a robust team of partners and collaborators. Looking ahead, PlantVillage plans to expand how it's helping farmers while simultaneously addressing climate change.

He also answers 9 frequently asked questions about education rights.  1) What does the law say about the difference between a 504 and an IEP? Is one better than another? 2) Can the school refuse to provide an IEP or a Section 504 Plan to a child who is making good grades? 3) Most people know that they are able to request a new evaluation every three years. What if the school says they don't believe the student needs another evaluation? Do you have to wait 3 years before requesting another evaluation? If a parent doesn't agree with the evaluation results, does the school have to agree to an IEE? 4) What if the school isn't following the 504 or IEP consistently? 5) What if the goals, objectives, and data collection don't make any sense? Ex. unclear and data collection is confusing 6) Are children who attend private schools, religious schools, and charter schools eligible for special education and related services? 7) What do the laws say about bullying at school? 8) What does the law say about Restraint and seclusion? 9) What do the laws say about suspensions for disruptive behavior and what if the behavior is related to the child's disability? What if the school believes the behavior is not related to the child's disability but the parent does think the behavior is due to their child's disability? That is, we cover: common random numbers (CRN's), antithetic variates (AV's), importance sampling, and control variates. We then  remember some general comments about the goal of modeling and commonalities seen across simulation platforms (as well as the different types of simulation platforms in general).

This lecture covers content related to implementing simulations with spreadsheets and the motivations for the use of special-purpose Discrete Event System Simulation tools. In particular, we discuss different approaches to implementing Discrete Event System (DES) simulations (DESS) with simple spreadsheets (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, etc.). We cover inventory management problems (such as the newsvendor model) as well as Monte Carlo sampling and stochastic activity networks (SAN's). Although we show that spreadsheets can be very powerful for this kind of work, we highlight that this approach is cumbersome for systems with increasing complexity. So this motivates why we would use more sophisticated tools specifically built for simulation (but perhaps not so great for data analysis by themselves), like Arena, FlexSim, Simio, and NetLogo. This lecture was recorded by Theodore Pavlic as part of IEE 475 (Simulating Stochastic Systems) at Arizona State University.

Ashley Barlow, a special education attorney based in Kentucky, joins Wendy Taylor on the podcast. Ashley brings a unique perspective to the discussion, drawing from her experience as a teacher, attorney, parent of a child with Down syndrome, and someone with a physical disability. Main Discussion Points: Free and Appropriate Education Under IDEA: Explanation of parents' rights and protections under IDEA, including the right to request an IEE at public expense. Importance of the IEE in ensuring that students with disabilities receive necessary support and services for effective education. District's obligation to pay for the IEE unless the request is proven unreasonable. IEE Process: Overview of the IEE process, allowing parents to obtain an independent evaluation if they disagree with the school district's assessment. Role of the IEE in providing parents with additional information and perspectives for making educational decisions for their child. Effective Reading Interventions for Dyslexia: Characteristics of effective reading interventions for students with dyslexia: systemic, explicit, multisensory, and research-based. Discussion on the Orton-Gillingham approach, a structured and cumulative program designed to develop phonemic awareness, phonics skills, decoding strategies, and reading fluency in students with dyslexia. Individualizing Inclusive Education: Federal mandate for children with disabilities to be educated to the greatest extent possible with non-disabled peers. Importance of tailoring inclusive education to meet the specific needs of each student. Misconceptions About Inclusion: Addressing misconceptions, such as the idea that inclusion means always keeping a student in a general education setting without considering individual requirements. Importance of assessing each student's needs and providing appropriate levels of support and intervention. Implementing Inclusive Education:Emphasis on accommodations, modifications, and specially designed instruction to ensure that students with disabilities can access the curriculum and make progress in their learning.

Decoding Learning Differences with Kimberlynn Lavelle

Sometimes, we need a second opinion.     If you're feeling that the school's report didn't find give you the answers you needed regarding why your child is struggling, you might need a second opinion. And the beauty of the system is that you can request an IEE that is free of charge to you. I don't encourage the use of this option for most people, as it is a big expense to school districts and we'd probably have them use that money to actually educate our children and their teachers well. Click here to watch the video or download the audio for this week's podcast! Do you have concerns about your child's IEP reports?
