We don't have a new episode this week, but we invite you to revisit our 18Forty Podcast conversation with Yossi Klein Halevi, originally aired on Dec. 26, 2023. In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we talk to Yossi Klein Halevi, a senior fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute, about what it means to be a Zionist and a Jew post-October 7.Since Simchas Torah, we've spent lots of time airing our political differences with others. What might be harder, though, is asking the uncomfortable questions about our own beliefs. Our guest today has decades of experience with this kind of soul-searching. In this episode we discuss:What is our relationship to the State of Israel, and how seriously must we take our participation in the building and rebuilding of the nation we envision? How might we maintain a sense of empathy for and kinship with the Muslim world and the Palestinian people? Why is it so important that we continue to have a Jewish state?Tune in to hear a conversation about the tensions that come with trying to uphold the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians. Interview begins at 6:54.Yossi Klein Halevi is a senior fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. Together with Imam Abdullah Antepli of Duke University, he co-directs the Institute's Muslim Leadership Initiative (MLI), which teaches emerging young Muslim American leaders about Judaism, Jewish identity and Israel. Why is it that after an attempted genocide of Jews in the Jewish State, the response by many is too target other Jews in the U.S. and around the world? To target them with violent rhetoric, vandalism, intimidation, and actual physical violence? Is this new? What are its origins? What is the difference between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism? And what's with the tearing down of posters of hostage children? Our guest today is Yossi Klein Halevi who - in addition to being an important voice in our new book - is a senior fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. I have been watching what has been unfolding in the state of Israel – the 5 percent (and growing) of the Israeli population that has taken to the streets of the Jewish state. They are protesting the proposed changes that would radically diminish the power of the judiciary, thus threatening the only thing that Israel has that represents a true balance of powers. When I see those scenes, it brings me back to those heady days of 1969, 1970 – when my American peers and I protested the Viet Nam war, and racism – and any number of things. I feel a kinship with the throngs in the streets of Israel, because I agree with them. Israel and the Zionist project itself are in danger. Join me in this podcast -- a dive into the rich legacy of Israeli protest music. Our guest: Yossi Klein Halevi: one of Israel's most prolific and profound writers and journalists; an author of many books, including "Like Dreamers," which was about the generation of soldiers who fought in the 1967 Six Day War, and how those individuals shaped Israeli society; a fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute, where he is the co-director, with Imam Abdullah Antepli, of the Muslim Leadership Institute – one of the most significant voices in the Jewish world today.

In a thought-provoking discussion with Imam Abdullah Antepli, he talks about growing up in a secular family in Turkey and overcoming the Antisemitic indoctrination in his youth. He responds to the notion that Jew hatred is baked into Christianity and Islam and, therefore, unstoppable. We delve into the similarities between Judaism and Islam, our complicated history living together, contextualizing Zionism, the promising impact of the Abraham Accords, and pay tribute to his friend and our inspiration, the late Rabbi Jonathan Sacks zt'l. With a focus on hope and mutual respect, we discuss if there can be a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and discuss the importance of building bridges between Jewish and Muslim communities. Additionally, he clarifies misconceptions about Islam and addresses whether it should be moderated, reformed, or neither. The fact is, religious fundamentalism is a problem that plagues all 3 Abrahamic faiths, which can only be solved by understanding each other and promoting more dialogue. We also talk about the power of Shabbat and the Imam's call for singing a "new song" of peace. Don't miss this enlightening conversation between 2 sons of Abraham, a Jew and a Muslim.
