"In the 1970s, Muslim characters in films were very different. In the 1990s, Roja opened the floodgates for films representing Muslims as terrorists. It was the first film which looked at the identity of the enemy. Then, especially after the attacks of 9/11, there was a big change in the representation of Muslims in Hindi films. As for women, in many films, Muslim women are reduced to being victims of oppression always. Now, whatever is happening in the current sociopolitical scene is directly reflected on screen. I have tried to connect the politics of representation in Hindi films with contemporary politics. So my book isn't just film studies, it is also a political text" — Nadira Khatun, author, 'Postcolonial Bollywood and Muslim Identity' talks to Manjula Narayan about everything from Pran in Zanjeer to the saviour syndrome in Gully Boy, the Brahmanical stance of films like Secret Superstar and Lipstick Under my Burqa, the absence of films made by subaltern Muslims, the vanished Muslim Social of the 1970s and 80s, and much more.

Can a Muslim university be an Indian university? These are the first words in Dr Laurence Gautier's book Between Nation and ‘Community' - Muslim Universities & Indian Politics after Partition, in which she explores the history, nature and contribution of India's leading Muslim universities - Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI), two institutions which in her words acted, “as crucibles for competing conceptions of ‘Indian Muslimness' in post-independence India.” This MBM conversation is with researcher and author, Laurence Gautier where we discuss how these universities, their members and students played key roles in recognising the needs of a new India in terms of education, nation-building and social reform. We dive deeper into debates and contestation of ideas around the Indian Muslim identity that continues to evolve and the ways in which many figures, men and women, both worked towards making it more encompassing and holistic, despite the internal and external challenges. The conversation also sheds some light on caste-based politics, women's participation in universities, and the possible future roles of both these universities in the making of modern India. In this episode we use abbreviations - ‘AMU' for Aligarh Muslim University and ‘JMI' for Jamia Millia Islamia.About Dr Laurence Gautier:Laurence Gautier is a researcher at the Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH), New Delhi. She completed her PhD in History at the University of Cambridge and taught at O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat before joining CSH. She writes on Muslim politics, secularism, nation-building and university politics in post-independence India. Between Nation and Community is her first monograph. She also co-edited Historicizing Sayyid-ness: Social Status and Muslim Identity in South Asia with Julien Levesque (JRAS, 2020).Episode notes:* Islamic Revival in British India: Deoband, 1860-1900 (Barbara D. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKFmZOHTNsQ The Mindful Muslim is an Inspirited Minds podcast that hosts raw, open, and honest conversations on various topics within the sphere of mental health, psychology, Islam and spirituality. In this episode we spoke to friends Lily Syed and Naila Huggins. A graduate of International Relations from the University of Birmingham, Lily has conducted research into the effects of Islamophobia on the Muslim youth and the discriminatory application of counter-terrorism legislation on the UK's Muslim communities. With 7 years experience in counter-extremism and supporting victims of hate crime, domestic and sexual violence, she has embarked on a career change with the ambition of becoming a human rights lawyer to further support and improve standards for British Muslims. Having visited Bangladesh, Palestine and China, she is determined to support the Rohingya, Palestinians and Uyghurs. Lily is currently on a scholarship with the University of Law studying MA Law. She will then undertake the LLM with LPC funded by the Law Society. Naila is a mixed race revert and has been a Muslim for 9 years. She is the only Muslim in her immediate family. Her family has been her biggest test and she has unfortunately been estranged from some, as the case with many reverts. She is a health and social care graduate and has worked within the sector for 7 years and has been working within children social services for the past 5 years. Working within children's social service has had a big impact on how she understands people and working systems. As a mixed-race black revert woman, she feels it is very important as Muslims that we are brave enough, where able, to be that voice for the community as we are often not correctly represented within organisations and systems. They discussed: Experiences with colourism, racism and racial confusion Struggles with identity and sense of belonging Growing up in families and communities and facing discrimination Islam and inter-racial marriages & so much more!
