The story of Sitting Bull is inextricably linked to that of his immense, untamed homeland, which he fought to protect and preserve. Sitting Bull was feared as a villain to white settlers, but regarded as a warrior, a shaman, and a hero to his own people. Determined to protect his people's culture, heritage, and dignity, he was the greatest chief the Lakota people had ever known. But why did his way of life become so threatened? How did he rise from a young warrior, to leader of the Lakota tribe? And how did his life - and his death - come to define the struggles of Native Americans? This is a Short History Of…Sitting Bull. A Noiser Production, written by Sean Coleman. With thanks to Mark Gardner, historian and author of ‘The Earth is all that Lasts: Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and the Last Stand of the Great Sioux Nation'. In April 2021, Film Comment published a Trans Cinema Roundtable Podcast, in which two trans film critics and two trans filmmakers answered questions submitted by listeners on what constitutes a cinema of transness. Now, two of those panelists—Caden Mark Gardner and Willow Catelyn Maclay—are about to publish a new book on that very subject. Corpses, Fools and Monsters is a thorough inquiry into the history, present, and future of what Caden and Willow call the “trans film image”—not a fully developed cinema, yet, but gestures, glimpses, and traces that have been visible in film from its earliest days and have now gained a renewed creative force. On today's episode, Caden and Willow join Film Comment Editor Devika Girish to talk about the extensive research they understood for the book, why representation can be a complex term for trans cinephiles, and films from reappraised classics like Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Toshio Matsumoto's Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) to new works by trans filmmakers, including Vera Drew's The People's Joker and Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw the TV Glow.

We love Mark Canha around here for Mark Canha Summer and for wearing our Pride Month shirt, but now it's Wrath Month, and Canha went deep last night to help give the Mets consecutive wins for the first time since June 14 and 16, and on consecutive days for the first time since May 30, 31, and June 1. We haven't gotten to check out his home run chain yet, so here we go!* Mark Canha hit his first home run off Taijuan Walker, 4/10/05* Taijuan Walker gave up his first home run to George Springer, 6/30/14* George Springer hit his first home run off Drew Smyly, 5/8/14* Drew Smyly gave up his first home run to Carlos Peña, 4/12/12* Carlos Peña hit his first home run off Gil Heredia, 9/19/01* Gil Heredia gave up his first home run to Ray Lankford, 9/1/91* Ray Lankford hit his first home run off Mark Gardner, 9/6/90* Mark Gardner gave up his first home run to Pedro Guerrero, 9/19/89* Pedro Guerrero hit his first home run off Bob Owchinko, 9/22/79* Bob Owchinko gave up his first home run to Ellis Valentine, 5/21/77* Ellis Valentine hit his first home run off Jim Rooker, 9/5/75* Jim Rooker gave up his first home run to Carlos May, 5/1/69* Carlos May hit his first home run off Jim Nash, 4/9/69* Jim Nash gave up his first home run to Al Kaline, 7/3/66* Al Kaline hit his first home run off Dave Hoskins, 9/26/53* Dave Hoskins gave up his first home run to Vic Wertz, 5/28/53* Vic Wertz hit his first home run off Bob Muncrief, 8/13/47* Bob Muncrief gave up his first home run to Ray Hayworth, 9/30/37* Ray Hayworth hit his first home run off Bob Cooney, 5/30/32* Bob Cooney gave up his first home run to Bruce Campbell, 9/26/31That was the first home run for Bruce Campbell, who is not that Bruce Campbell, obviously. This Bruce Campbell may or may not have been evil, but he's been dead since 1995, having lived to the age of 85. In 1932, Campbell started the season with the White Sox, but was traded to the St. Louis Browns at the end of April, along with Bump Hadley, for Red Kress.Campbell went on to lead the American League that year in both strikeouts and getting hit by pitches. After hitting a career-high 16 homers in 1933, Campbell remained a regular in American League outfields for the next decade, with Cleveland from 1935-39, Detroit in 1940-41, and Washington in 1942. He was 9-for-25 with a homer in the 1940 World Series for the Tigers, but it wasn't enough to beat the Reds that year, with Paul Derringer tossing a complete game in Game 7 and Campbell going 0-for-3 with a walk. We are back - and with an episode that was come back worthy. In this episode we talk about the intersection of youth mental health and education. Hayes Freedom High School in Camas, Washington has come under threat of consolidation within a district that has a history of shutting down programs that serve the most vulnerable and neurodivergent population in its town. We talked to two teachers about why this "student first" model of education has such a high success rate, why Hayes needs to stay small and in its current location, and what teachers are seeing in our children and their mental health. A special heartfelt thank you to Principal Amy Holmes for creating a trauma informed education setting and to all the teachers that have worked for Hayes past and present. A special shoutout to Monica Winkley and Mark Gardner for coming on the show to talk about these important issues.Links to mental health surveys discussed in today's show:https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2022/p0331-youth-mental-health-covid-19.htmlhttps://www.npr.org/2023/02/13/1156610138/the-mental-health-of-teen-girls-and-lgbtq-teens-has-worsened-since-2011https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/02/13/1156663966/teen-girls-and-lgbtq-youth-plagued-by-violence-and-trauma-survey-saysIf your ready to work with us or for more information about Kimberly and her work check out our website at https://www.coachwithkimberly.comFollow us on social media!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/coachwithkimberlyInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/coachwithkimberlyEmail us with any questions! hellocoachkimberly@gmail.comIf you like the podcast - don't forget to share it with a friend! I'm joined by Mark Gardner, a Partner at Jaklitsch/Gardner and Professor at the Parsons School of Design. We discuss his work with the Inwood African Burial Ground & Lenape Ceremonial Site, also known as the Inwood Sacred Sites, and how colonization manifests itself in design and architecture across the US. When The Bowery Residents Committee learned the site it planned to purchase had a history as a burial ground for enslaved Africans and as a Lenape Ceremonial Site, their plans for building and operating a high-quality shelter for people experiencing homelessness quickly changed. In our conversation, Mark gives an overview of the geographical history of this site, which is situated as far north as you can go on the island of Manhattan. He highlights key designers and collaborators who are working to capture the culture and contemplative nature of the land. Mark and I also engage in a broader discussion about our experiences as minorities in the US. We talk about the racial bias in real estate and how he responds to people who deny the existence of institutionalized racism. Mark shares why he's so drawn to projects like the Inwood Sacred Sites and how he manages to combine his passion for social justice with his architectural talents. About the Guest:Mark Gardner is a Partner at the New York City based design firm Jaklitsch/Gardner. Mark started his career in architecture at the firms Jeffrey McKean Architect, Murphy Burnham & Buttrick, and Stanley Love-Stanley.
