Washington DC based Kerosene 454 performed and recorded consistently from 1992-1998. In that time, they released 3 albums, several seven inches records and laboriously toured North America, Japan, and Europe. After 28 years, their sophomore album, Came By To Kill Me will be re-released digitally and on limited edition vinyl on 1/24/25 via Solid Brass Records. In this episode, Joe talks with singer guitarist Erik Denno and founding member and guitarist James Wall. Erik and James explain the origin and frequently changing line up of the band, how they found each other in an explosion of grunge culture and why they ultimately settled in Washington DC. We learn why Came By To Kill Me is a defining record for the band, how heavy touring ultimately paid off in the recording process and why good old fashion angst informed the band at the time. Erik and James share their experience working with dream trio Don Zientara (Inner Ear), J. Robbins (Jawbox) and Juan Carrera (Warmers) at Inner Ear Studios and how that shaped their perspective on recording. The three discuss rock band reunions, give praise to the great Meg Watjen and the Velvet Elvis and we hear a couple remastered tunes from Came By To Kill Me. As TNT zeroes in on record labels this season, it was only a matter of time until Thanh + Tim made their way to the legendary Dischord Records. And what better to showcase the label than one of the heaviest hitting albums in all of post-hardcore, the foundational 1990 release “Repeater” by a little band named Fugazi. Enjoy this one, you ice cream eating motherfuckers!

Coriky - "Clean Kill" from the 2020 album Coriky on Dischord Records. Combine the melodic energy of the Evens and the gruff bark of Fugazi and you've got Coriky, not surprisingly, 'cause they feature members of both those bands. The trio of guitarist Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, Evens), bassist Joe Lally (Fugazi), and drummer Amy Farina (Evens) played their first show in late 2018, at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church in Washington D.C., but hadn't officially released anything 'til now. Their self-titled debut was recorded last year by Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios, a name you've probably seen in the liner notes of most of your Dischord Records albums. Due to the coronavirus and the resulting closure of distributors and shops, they've postponed the release of the LP for now, but you can enjoy today's Song of the Day here. In the spring of 1981, guitarist John Fox started a protest band called Dark Self Image in Fairfax with his brother Jay on bass. In July 1982, the band recorded their first demo at Inner Ear Studios. Mike Brown became the singer and in October, they changed their name to United Mutation. The band was then featured on the record Mixed Nuts Don't Crack, a sampler that established them alongside other bands that would form their Northern Virginia cohort, such as Media Disease and Nuclear Crayons. Drummer Michael Salkind was then replaced by Billy Fox, who is not related to brothers John and Jay Fox. They then put out the Fugitive Family EP on their own new label called DSI Records (named after the eponymous band), founded by John Fox and Lee West, with help from Dischord Records. Drummer Fox left and was replaced by previous drummer Steve Kirkland, and in 1985 they released the EP Rainbow Person on their own label. In 1988, John Fox left the band to take full-time care of the DSI label, which put out records by Death Piggy, Malefice, Uruku, Foundation, Images, and M.F.D., as well as mainstays of the DC area scene such as John Stabb, Slickee Boys, and Scream. Ron Winters Jr. formed Branch Manager with Dave Allen on bass and Derrick Decker on drums in 1990. They went on to sign with Dischord Records and become the torchbearers for post-hardcore Reston. They released a self-titled debut in 1995 and Anything Tribal, their second and acclaimed final LP, recorded with the help of Ian Mackaye and Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios, in 1997. Winters discovered a talent for writing young as the son of a schoolteacher. When added to his newfound dexterity on guitar and inspiration from 70s rock radio and the suburban landscape around him, Winters started to write songs and never stopped. Winters began to play live with his high school band Toolin' for Bovine, but went on to play with other Restonites in Foundation, Blood Bats, and Sons of Disobedience. He has toured with the likes of NOFX and Fugazi, and Branch Manager have currently reformed and are playing live and recording another album. You can find their music at https://branchmanager.bandcamp.com/
Mike Davis learned guitar from his neighbor Steve Niles, who went on to play in Gray Matter, and formed his first band, Pudwak, with Sean Philpotts and Dave Allen, who later played in Branch Manager. They recorded one cassette album with Mike Clayberg from Malefice. They then added Davis White, also of Malefice and later Repercussion, on drums, renamed themselves Foundation, and recorded two albums with Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios. Mike went on to work at Inner Ear himself as an engineer and producer and helped record albums by Dismemberment Plan and the Goons among many others. Along the way, he helped connect Dag Nasty with their first vocalist and played with other members of the band in Los Vampiros. He also played in the eclectic NOVA band The Iceboxers and on albums by the Blood Bats, featuring Charles Bennington of Bloody Mannequin Orchestra. Suffice it to say, Mike helped establish what would come to be known as the Reston Hardcore scene and had a Zelig-like ability to cross over with virtually everybody making great music in Northern Virginia at that time. His guitar sound is an indelible part of numerous stellar records from the 80s and 90s as well as his recording techniques.
Nathan Crouch formed the band Lugnut with Marc Williams on vocals, Brian Ballard on bass, David Swartz on the other guitar, and a series of drummers, Clay Wells, Zack Stanley, and finally Barney Rubble (né Jeff Robinson). They worked with some great producers and studios along the way, from Christian Quick and Stillness Sound, to Inner Ear Studios, and finally Jeff Juliano. Their 7”, Lugnutty Buddy, was released by Victrola Records thanks to label head Billups Allen. They hit some major milestones in playing DC Space, the old 9:30 Club, the Black Cat, and best of all—Jam for Man. They were the best times Nathan remembers from his youth, and he shares those memories here.
Dave Stone grew up in North Reston, incrementally inching towards punk from a pretty early age thanks to the Clash and the movie D.O.A. He started his first band K.I.D. (Kids In Dispute) before any of them really knew how to play, and he went on to form or join at least nine more bands, including: FSA, Enough, Infusion, All Fall Down, Porch Mob, VPR, Nervous Impulse, BSR, and finally his current band, Rise Defy. He’s comfortable on both bass and guitar, writes great songs, headlined Jam for Man, recorded at Inner Ear Studios, and has played with some of the greats like HR and Angelo Moore. Even better, Lake Anne Dave is an excellent storyteller, and he weaves it all together on this week’s episode. Vincent Feldman/June 21, 2014 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Vincent Feldman. Despite living in Washington, DC for a few years while attending college, photographer Vincent Feldman has lived his entire life in the city of Philadelphia. It is this life-long relationship with the Philly that lead to his passion for the city, its neighborhoods, its endangered (and often lost) architecture, and — perhaps most crucially — its people. Not only does Feldman document the dilapidated but once glorious buildings of Philadelphia (many gone, with others soon to vanish from the landscape), but the effect of these buildings on the lives of the people Feldman sees as often being manipulated (usually to their detriment) by forces more powerful than them. Coming from a family of immigrants (Jewish and Italian) with a distrust of “the State,” Feldman inherited both disdain and engagement. Punk and later hardcore punk came to Feldman as a natural, almost pre-ordained fit. He wrote most of the music for the ‘80s HC band Legitimate Reason (featuring previous interview subject John Finn), who had their 7” EP recorded at the famous Inner Ear Studios by Eli Janney. While living in Washington, DC, Feldman became a roadie for the just-formed Shudder To Think, which got him touring the U.S. and later Europe. Seeing the contrast between the disused, abandoned buildings in Philly and the thriving, vibrant squat scene in Europe inspired Feldman to document the vanishing buildings of Philadelphia and show how they were once used. While Feldman ultimately moved away from music, he often cites his experiences in the HC punk scene as serving as some of the inspiration for his work. Earlier in 2014, Paul Dry Books published Feldman’s stunning book City Abandoned to great acclaim. As a witness to the MOVE catastrophe of 1985 and the disregard for some of Philadelphia’s finest architecture, Vincent Feldman has seen this city at its worst. And yet, even now, he uses his art to inspire positive action; he bears witness. You can read more about Vincent Feldman’s book City Abandoned here at the Paul Dry Books website. Thanks to Will Schofield over at Paul Dry. City Abandoned may be purchased at both the Paul Dry Books website or, perhaps more conveniently, here at Amazon.com. Their style of less aggressive, melodic hardcore was influential to emocore, as well as post-hardcore. Check them out here: http://www.daghouse.com/ BAD BRAINS - Rock For Light Original Release 1983 on PVC Records Reissued 1987 Caroline Records ReMixed and Released 1991 Caroline Records. Bad Brains is an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington DC in 1977. They are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk. Bad Brains developed a fast and intense punk rock sound which came to be labeled "hardcore", and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. The unique factor of the band's music was the fact that they played more complex rhythms than other hardcore punk bands, also adapting non-punk style guitar riffs and solos into their songs. The second full-length album by hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains, released in 1983. A previous album, Bad Brains, was released in 1982 but only on cassette, therefore making Rock for Light Bad Brains' first proper album. https://www.facebook.com/badbrains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Brains MINOR THREAT - Out of Step Original Release - 1983 Dischord Records Out of Step is the sole studio album by American hardcore punk band Minor Threat. It was released on 45 RPM vinyl in April 1983 through Dischord Records. After a temporary break-up in 1982, Minor Threat entered Inner Ear Studios in January 1983 to record Out of Step. Recording duties were handled by Don Zientara. While the lyrics on their early EPs were an outlet for MacKaye's message, the lyrics on Out of Step deal mainly with friendships and problems associated with them. http://www.dischord.com/band/minor-threat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_Threat Other Links and Info: Dischord Records - http://www.dischord.com/ NYHC Book - http://www.bazillionpoints.com/shop/nyhc-new-york-hardcore-1980-1990-by-tony-rettman/ Bike Mechanic Tales From The Road And Workshop - http://www.velopress.com/books/bike-mechanic/ Cannondale CAAD10 - http://www.cannondale.com/nam_en/2015/bikes/road/elite-road/caad10 Nigel Tufnel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Tufnel Our Blog: Deathwish Racing - http://deathwishracing.blogspot.com/ Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member Email Kyle Email Mountain Bike Radio
