En forestilling, som alle aktører – både russerne, europæerne og ukrainerne – opfører til ære for Donald Trump i et forsøg overbevise ham om, at de i hvert fald ikke står i vejen for hans fred. Europakorrespondent Martin Gøttske har talt med flere centrale ukrainske politikere, og udlægger hvad man tænker om det diplomatiske spil set fra Kyiv. Hvor meget virkelighed må man skrive ind i en roman og stadigvæk kalde den for fiktion? Det er det principielle spørgsmål, som er på spil i en af tidens mest opsigtvækkende retssager. Nick Ut hay Nguyễn Thành Nghệ là tác giả bức ảnh Em Bé Napalm ? « Vài lời về một trong những tấm ảnh nổi tiếng nhất trong lịch sử của các phóng viên chiến trường từ 50 năm qua. Đó là hình ảnh một bé gái bị phỏng nặng chạy thoát sau một trận dội bom … Tác giả bức ảnh được cho là Nick Ut, phóng viên ảnh của hãng thông tấn Mỹ AP… Nhưng nếu như người chụp tấm Em Bé Napalm lại không phải là ông ấy thì sao ? » Nhà báo người Pháp Nicolas Poincaré hôm 11/10/2025 đã giới thiệu về phim tài liệu The Stringer, hành trình đi tìm sự thật về tác giả bức ảnh Em Bé Napalm. Phim được được trình chiếu trong khuôn khổ chương trình tuần lễ thành phố Bayeux vùng Calvados-Normandie vinh danh các phóng viên chiến trường. Ở Pháp, phim được trình chiếu trên nền tảng phim trực tuyến Netflix từ ngày 28/11/2025. Tất cả bắt nguồn từ một phát biểu của Carl Robinson, cựu nhân viên của hãng thông tấn Agence Press ở Sài Gòn năm 1972 với Gary Knight. Nick Ut hay Nguyễn Thành Nghệ là tác giả bức ảnh Em Bé Napalm ? Trong cuộc điều tra về tác giả bức ảnh còn được biết đến dưới tên gọi The Terror of War Gary Kngiht đã tìm đến rất nhiều người, tìm kiếm những ai từng có mặt ở Trảng Bàng, ngày 08/06/1972. Hai người vắng mặt trong phim là Em bé Napalm bà Phan Thị Kim Phúc và phóng viên ảnh, Nick Ut. Trong đoạn phim tài liệu năm 1972, một phóng viên người Mỹ nhận định « Sau hai lượt bay, rõ ràng là các máy bay ném bom Skyraiders đã chọn nhầm mục tiêu … và trong đợt bay thứ ba, họ thả 4 quả bom napalm, trúng vào thường dân và các quân nhân ở Trảng Bàng ». Trước ống kính truyền hình và báo chí quốc tế, bất chợt, một cô bé 9 tuổi, trần truồng, bị bỏng nặng, cùng nhiều đứa trẻ từ ngôi làng này hoảng loạn chạy ra quốc lộ : Vừa chạy vừa la khóc, đau đớn, hoảng loạn. Bức ảnh Em Bé Napalm ngày 08/06/1972 trở thành biểu tượng của « địa ngục chiến tranh Việt Nam », đi vòng quanh thế giới, được bình chọn là « hình ảnh trong năm » và đoạt giải thưởng Pulitzer. Gần nửa thế kỷ, phóng viên ảnh Nick Ut được cho là người đã ghi được khoảnh khắc nói lên sự ghê rợn của chiến tranh. Trong những thước phim đã bạc màu thời gian, Nick Út từng thuật lại với báo chí quốc tế là ông đã trông thấy Kim Phúc chạy ra khỏi ngôi làng vừa bị dội bom như thế nào và đã đưa cô đến bệnh viện. Thế nhưng, The Stringer ra mắt công chúng lần đầu tiên trong khuôn khổ liên hoan Sundance hồi tháng 1/2025 đã nêu lên một câu hỏi bất ngờ. Đạo diễn Bảo Nguyễn đã sớm được nhà sản xuất và đoàn phim mời cùng đồng hành trong cuộc điều tra về tác giả bức ảnh nổi tiếng nói trên. Trả lời RFI Việt ngữ trước khi The Stringer được công chiếu tại Bayeux tháng 10/2025 đạo diễn Bảo Nguyễn giải thích vì sao anh đã nhận lời với phóng viên ảnh Gary Knight và đoàn phim : Với anh, theo đuổi và tìm kiếm sự thật phải là một ưu tiên. Bảo Nguyễn : Bộ phim bắt đầu bằng cuộc điều tra với phóng viên ảnh Gary Knight và đã được dựng lên cùng với Terri Lichstein và Fionna Turner. Điểm khởi đầu là một thư điện tử của Carl Robinson, cựu biên tập ảnh của hãng tin AP tại văn phòng Sài Gòn. Ông ấy đã thú nhận với Gary Knight và thế là nhóm làm phim bắt đầu mở cuộc điều tra. Họ đã liên hệ với tôi khá sớm vì tôi là một nhà làm phim tài liệu. Cá nhân tôi cũng đang cân nhắc liệu mình có muốn thực hiện bộ phim này hay không, bởi như chị nói, bức ảnh Em Bé Napalm là cả một biểu tượng .. Tuy nhiên tôi nghĩ, với tư cách một người tiếp nhận báo chí – tôi không phải nhà báo, tôi là một nhà làm phim – ngành báo chí thôi thúc chúng ta luôn nêu lên những nghi vấn và luôn đi tìm sự thật. Khi chưa biết cuộc điều tra sẽ dẫn đến đâu, tôi nghĩ điều quan trọng đối với chúng tôi, đặc biệt là với tôi, là ghi lại quá trình điều tra, khám phá mọi góc nhìn khác nhau của ngày hôm đó -ngày mà tác giả đã chụp được bức ảnh Em Bé Napalm ở Trảng Bàng và tìm hiểu xem rằng, ai có thể đã chụp bức ảnh đó nếu như tác giả không phải là Nick Ut. RFI : Từ chiến dịch Tràng Bàng đến nay đã hơn 50 năm trôi qua. Trong quá trình làm phim anh và đoàn phim đã phải vượt qua những khó khăn nào ? Làm sao tìm lại được các nhân chứng từng có mặt ở ngôi làng này ngày 08/06/1972 ? Bảo Nguyễn : Vâng, tôi nghĩ một trong những thách thức lớn là bức ảnh được chụp đã hơn 50 năm trước. Rất nhiều nhân chứng trên hiện trường ngày hôm đó nay không còn nữa. Nhiều lần tôi cũng tự hỏi vì sao vấn đề lại được đặt ra sau 50 năm. Vì sao Carl Robinson lại lên tiếng? Vì sao phóng viên tự do Nguyễn Thành Nghệ chưa bao giờ công khai tiết lộ điều này ? Có rất nhiều câu hỏi mà tôi phải tự tìm hiểu và giải đáp trước khi chúng tôi thật sự bắt đầu hành trình làm phim. Trong quá trình thực hiện bộ phim tài liệu này, tôi dần hiểu rằng, giống như nhiều người tị nạn phải rời bỏ quê hương, họ không có điều kiện hay không hoàn toàn có quyền tự định đoạt để nói về những quá khứ, bởi vì mối quan tâm hàng đầu của họ là tìm kế sinh nhai, bảo đảm cuộc sống trong một môi trường mới. Trước hết họ phải chăm lo cho gia đình, cho nên họ không nói về quá khứ nữa. Và bây giờ, trong quá trình làm phim, tôi hiểu rằng đó là một trong những lý do ông Nghệ đã không thể lên tiếng, cũng như một người đảm trách phầm âm thanh cho đài NBC hôm đó, trước công chúng, ông này cũng chưa bao giờ kể về những gì đã diễn ra ở Trảng Bàng hôm 08/06/1972. Giờ đây mọi người mới hỏi : Tại sao đến 53 năm sau mới lại đặt ra câu hỏi ai là tác giả bức ảnh Em Bé Napalm. Khi đặt mình vào hoàn cảnh của ông Nghệ, bạn sẽ hiểu rằng họ cảm thấy là họ không có quyền hay không đủ tư cách để nói ra sự thật, nói ra những gì họ đã phải trải qua. Carl Robinson phóng viên của AP cũng vậy. Ông ta đã phải chăm sóc gia đình và không muốn mất việc. Nhìn dưới góc độ này, mọi người sẽ hiểu vì sao họ không lên tiếng. Và dĩ nhiên, việc cố gắng khai mở một câu chuyện và sự thật đã xảy ra hơn 50 năm trước là điều rất khó. Nhưng tôi nghĩ đội ngũ nhà báo đã hoàn thành bổn phận của họ : theo đuổi sự thật và đặt ra những câu hỏi cần thiết. Chúng tôi huy động được các nhà báo Việt Nam tại chỗ, và đây là những người đã đóng vai trò then chốt giúp chúng tôi tìm được những nhân chứng từng có mặt ở Trảng Bàng năm 1972. Là một nhà báo, chị có thể hiểu những khó khăn trong việc nghiên cứu và tìm kiếm nhân chứng. Tôi rất tôn trọng các nhà báo trong bộ phim và mức độ chuyên nghiệp của họ khi kết nối được với những người mà suốt 50 năm họ đã im lặng về chuyện ở Trảng Bàng. Các cộng tác viên ở Việt Nam đã gọi rất nhiều cuộc điện thoại, hỏi han mọi người, gõ cửa từng nhà. Theo nhiều cách, đó là lời tri ân đối với tinh thần báo chí đúng theo nghĩa của nó. RFI : The Stringer ra mắt công chúng lần đầu vào tháng 1/2025 ở liên hoan phim Sundance. Công chúng đã đón nhân phim này như thế nào ? Bảo Nguyễn : Chúng tôi rất vinh dự khi được trình chiếu phim tài liệu The Stringer trên khắp thế giới và như chị vừa nói, lần đầu ở Sundance, rồi tháng 10/2025 là tại thị trấn Bayeux. Sau đó là trên nền tảng truyền hình Netflix. Tại liên hoan phim Sundance, nhiều người đến gặp tôi và nói lời cảm ơn. Rất nhiều người nói rằng họ cảm ơn vì đã kể câu chuyện của ông Nghệ – một câu chuyện chưa bao giờ được nói ra suốt nhiều năm. Khán giả cũng đã cảm ơn vì chúng tôi đã dám mạo hiểm theo đuổi sự thật. Tại Bayeux sự kiện dành để vinh danh các phóng viên chiến trường, chị sẽ có dịp trao đổi với Gary Knight và Fiona Turner, nhưng tôi đã nghe rất nhiều người bày tỏ ngưỡng mộ, cho rằng cả hai đã thật dũng cảm khi thực hiện bộ phim này. RFI : Sau The Stringer dự án kế tiếp của đạo diễn Bảo Nguyễn là gì ? Bảo Nguyễn : Vâng, cảm ơn chị đã hỏi. Bộ phim tiếp theo của tôi rất khác với The Stringer. Tôi đang chuẩn bị làm phim về Jimi Hendrix, nghệ sĩ guitar rock huyền thoại. Phim này sẽ tập trung vào một giai đoạn cụ thể trong cuộc đời của ông khi sống ở Luân Đôn, vào thời điểm đầu sự nghiệp. Đương nhiên, thế giới của Hendrix hoàn toàn khác với The Stringer, nhưng tôi cảm thấy mình thật sự may mắn khi có thể kể lại những câu chuyện như vậy. Bất luận ai mới là tác giả thực thụ của Em Bé Napalm, một trong những bức ảnh nổi tiếng nhất về chiến tranh trên thế giới của thế kỷ 20, phim The Stringer trước hết là một cuộc điều tra nghiêm túc : Gary Knight và đoàn phim đã không quản công tìm kiếm các nhân chứng, họ còn huy động cả những đội ngũ chuyên gia từ Mỹ, từ Luân Đôn hay Paris …. để đi tìm sự thật… Trong thời đại mà sự thật thường bị bóp méo, chỉ riêng nỗ lực này cũng đủ mang lại giá trị cho bộ phim tài liệu nói về một phóng viên ảnh tự do : The Stringer.

Palestyńczycy nie mają swoich funduszy, żeby to odbudować, żeby stworzyć na nowo całą infrastrukturę, która została zniszczona, więc tam są potrzebne gigantyczne pieniądze. Te pieniądze ktoś będzie musiał wyłożyć, ktoś będzie musiał zainwestować w Strefę Gazy, stworzyć warunki do normalnego życia. Więc to jest skomplikowany proces. Ustał rozlew krwi i wszyscy powinni się z tego cieszyć. Ale pamiętajmy, że to jest zaledwie początek drogi negocjacyjnej, bo plan Donalda Trumpa ma o wiele więcej punktów niż ten punkt pierwszy, od którego się zaczęło, co do którego Izrael porozumiał się z Hamasem, czyli uwolnienie zakładników. Polska polityka za to w ostatnich dniach przypominała scenariusz filmu „Czas Apokalipsy" – dosłownie. Na sobotnim wiecu Prawa i Sprawiedliwości pojawił się Robert Bąkiewicz, trzymający kosę „na sztorc", wzywał do „wyrywania chwastów" i „zrzucania napalmu na polską ziemię". Naczelni podsumowali wypowiedź Roberta Bąkiewicza krótko: „Opowiadanie o wyrywaniu chwastów, opowiadanie o zrzucaniu napalmu to jest bezpośrednie wzywanie do przemocy. (…) Ludzie, którzy tego słuchają mogą wziąć to do siebie i zacząć używać przemocy." To nie jest niewinna metafora. Polska ma już za sobą tragiczne przypadki przemocy politycznej, a eskalacja języka nienawiści może doprowadzić do kolejnych tragedii. Những tranh cãi xung quanh bức ảnh nổi tiếng “Napalm Girl” ( Em bé Napalm ) đã bùng lên kể từ khi một bộ phim được chiếu tại Mỹ khẳng định tác giả của bức ảnh này không phải là Nick Ut mà là một người khác. Trong suốt 53 năm qua, bức ảnh “Napalm Girl”, còn được biết dưới cái tên "Terror of war" ,vẫn được xem là biểu tượng cho sự tàn khốc của chiến tranh Việt Nam. Bức ảnh được chụp ngày 08/06/1972 tại Trảng Bàng khi máy bay của không quân Việt Nam Cộng Hòa ném bom napalm nhầm mục tiêu vào một thánh thất Cao Đài nơi mà một nhóm phụ nữ và trẻ em lúc đó đang trú ẩn. Trong ảnh, người ta thấy Kim Phúc, một cô bé 9 tuổi, bị bỏng nặng, thân thể lõa lồ vì quần áo bị cháy hết, cùng với một số trẻ em, từ làng Trảng Bàng vừa chạy vừa la khóc đau đớn, hoảng loạn trên quốc lộ, trước khi bất tỉnh và được đưa vào bệnh viện. Chính nhờ bức ảnh này mà ông Nick Ut, một phóng viên nhiếp ảnh trẻ làm việc cho hãng tin Mỹ AP ở Sài Gòn lúc ấy, trở nên nổi tiếng thế giới: Ngay ngày hôm sau “Napalm Girl” được đăng trên trang bìa của New York Times, gây chấn động dư luận quốc tế. Tác giả của bức ảnh ngay năm đó được trao Giải Pulitzer về báo chí. Sang năm 1973, tổ chức World Press Photo ( Giải Báo ảnh Thế giới ) đã trao giải “Bức ảnh của năm” cho “Napalm Girl”. Thế nhưng, ngày 16/05/2025, World Press Photo lại thông báo tạm ngưng ghi tên tác giả của bức ảnh “Napalm Girl” là Nick Ut sau khi một bộ phim tài liệu của đạo diễn Mỹ gốc Việt Bảo Nguyễn tựa đề “The Stringer: The Man Who Took The Photo”, được trình chiếu lần đầu tiên tại Liên hoan phim Sundance ngày 25/01/2025. Các tác giả của bộ phim khẳng định, sau nhiều năm điều tra, thật ra tác giả của bức ảnh ”Napalm Girl” không phải là Nick Ut, mà là ông Nguyễn Thành Nghệ, được giới thiệu là một “nhà báo tự do” (a stringer). Bộ phim dựa trên cuộc điều tra của nhà báo Mỹ Gary Knight về tuyên bố vào năm 2022 của Carl Robinson, một nhân viên của hãng tin AP ở Sài Gòn năm 1972. Theo Robinson, ông đã được Horst Faas, trưởng bộ phận ảnh của AP tại Sài Gòn vào thời điểm đó, ra lệnh phải ghi Nick Ut là tác giả bức ảnh, vì Nick Ut là phóng viên chính thức của hãng tin. Bộ phim phỏng vấn rất nhiều người, trong đó có một số phóng viên có mặt tại Trảng Bàng ngày 08/06/1972, nhưng lại không hỏi hai nhân vật chính trong câu chuyện này là Nick Ut (hiện sống tại Mỹ) và bà Kim Phúc (hiện sống ở Canada). Sau một cuộc điều ra riêng của World Press Photo, giám đốc điều hành World Press Photo, Joumana El Zein Khoury, đưa ra một tuyên bố vào tháng 5: "Mức độ nghi ngờ quá lớn để duy trì việc ghi nhận tên tác giả như hiện tại". Tuy nhiên, World Press Photo cũng không ghi lại tên tác giả bức ảnh. Theo trang mạng PetaPixel, ông Bảo Nguyễn, đạo diễn phim "The Stringer" đã hoan nghênh quyết định của Worlfd Press Photo. Đạo diễn phim đã viết vào tháng 5: "Những phát hiện của họ kết luận rằng, dựa trên các bằng chứng hình ảnh và kỹ thuật hiện có, Nguyễn Thành Nghệ, một nhiếp ảnh gia người Việt Nam lâu nay bị lãng quên, dường như có nhiều khả năng là người chụp bức ảnh này hơn Nick Ut. Việc xem xét lại này một phần được thúc đẩy bởi bằng chứng được trình bày trong "The Stringer", một bộ phim tài liệu điều tra do tôi đạo diễn với sự hợp tác chặt chẽ của một nhóm các nhà báo và đoàn làm phim, nhiều người trong số họ là người Việt Nam.Sự công nhận này có ý nghĩa sâu sắc đối với tất cả chúng tôi, những người tham gia. Nhưng trên hết, nó đại diện cho bước đầu tiên quan trọng trong việc ghi nhận người mà chúng tôi tin là đã thật sự chụp bức ảnh đó: Nguyễn Thành Nghệ. Chúng tôi hy vọng thế giới sẽ biết đến và gọi tên ông ấy". Ông Bảo Nguyễn còn khẳng định rằng "The Stringer" không phải là một bộ phim về Nick Ut, mà là một cuộc khám phá sự thật, ký ức và "gánh nặng thầm lặng của một người đàn ông đã mang trong mình một bí mật hơn năm mươi năm". Ngay sau khi được trình chiếu, bộ phim đã gây tranh cãi rất nhiều trong giới phóng viên nhiếp ảnh quốc tế, nhiều người tin vào những khẳng định trong phim “The Stringer”, nhưng cũng có nhiều người nghi ngờ tính xác thực của bộ phim. Về phần mình, ngay trước khi "The Stringer" được trình chiếu lần đầu tiên, hãng tin AP đã bác bỏ những khẳng định trong bộ phim và đã tiến hành các cuộc điều tra riêng để đi đến kết luận là không có lý do gì để thay đổi tên tác giả của bức ảnh “Napalm Girl”. Ngay sau khi World Press Photo đình chỉ quyền tác giả của Nick Ut cho bức ảnh "Em bé Napalm", ba nhân vậy nguyên là chủ tịch và giám khảo của World Press Photo đã viết một bức thư ngỏ bày tỏ sự thất vọng trước quyết định của tổ chức này và yêu cầu World Press Photo khôi phục quyền tác giả của Nick Ut. Tính đến đầu tháng 6, 400 nhiếp ảnh gia chuyên nghiệp đã ký vào bức thư đó. Mặc dù không nêu rõ ai là người chụp bức ảnh nổi tiếng “Napalm Girl”, bức thư ngỏ cho là "vẫn chưa có đủ bằng chứng không thể chối cãi" để có thể kết luận đó không phải là ảnh do Nick Ut chụp. Cũng nhằm biểu thị sự ủng hộ đối với Nick Ut trong vụ này, năm nay ban tổ chức Liên hoan Ảnh Báo chí Thế giới "Visa pour l'image" tại thành phố Perpignan của Pháp, mà giám đốc là ông Jean - François Leroy, ngay từ tháng 5 đã mời ông đến dự. Trả lời RFI Việt ngữ ngày 02/09/2025 tại Perpignan nhân Liên hoan Visa pour l'image, ông Nick Ut cho biết: “Họ đã mời tôi cách đây mấy tháng rồi. Nhân dịp này tôi vừa tới thì gặp ông Jean - François Leroy hôm qua. Ông rất mừng khi gặp lại tôi và ông nói: “Chúng tôi ủng hộ Nick Ut trong vụ bức hình Em bé Napalm”. Họ rất là phản đối, bởi vì bức ảnh “Em bé Napalm” đã từng được nói rất nhiều tại Pháp, nhất là tờ báo Paris Match đã từng sử dụng bức hình này rất nhiều. Cách đây ba mươi mấy năm, Visa pour l'image cũng đã từng mời tôi tới đây và tôi đã gặp những phóng viên nổi tiếng, họ luôn luôn ủng hộ tôi. Khi bức hình đó được làm thành phim “The Stringer”, họ rất bực tức và phản đối luôn cả World Press rất nhiều. Cách đây hơn một năm tôi đã nghe câu chuyện đó. Sau đó phim thành hình là phim “The Stringer”. Tôi cũng đã coi phim đó rồi. Phim hoàn toàn là không đúng sự thật, bởi vì họ nói ảnh đó là tôi lấy của một người làm cho NBC. Thật ra ông ấy không phải là nhà báo, mà là một tài xế được mướn mấy tiếng đồng hồ một ngày thôi. Báo chí Việt ngữ nói ông ấy là một nhà báo làm cho đài truyền hình là không đúng sự thật, tại vì tất cả những người Việt Nam làm cho báo Mỹ trong thời chiến tranh tôi đều biết hết. Tôi được người bạn từ bên Úc gọi tôi một cái message ( tin nhắn ) nói rằng ông Nghệ không có làm báo gì hết. Ông ấy đi du học ở tại Mỹ năm 63 vào thời ông Diệm, học một khóa học về truyền hình tại New Jersey, nhưng thật sự là học làm tình báo. Khi trở về Việt Nam, ông là sĩ quan Việt Nam dưới chính quyền Sài Gòn, chuyên đi khai thác tù binh. Vào ngày 08/06/1972 ở Trảng Bàng, ông ấy đứng nhìn vào máy hình để bắt những tù binh của Cộng sản về điều tra. Người bạn tôi cho biết là trước khi mất nước năm 75, ông Nghệ đã được tòa đại sứ Mỹ đưa đi trước một tháng. Chỉ có những người nhân viên mật vụ của Mỹ mới được đi sớm. Ông này chưa làm nhà báo bao giờ! Ông chỉ là một tài xế lái xe chở những người của đài truyền hình cameraman, soundman đi Trảng Bàng hôm đó. Tôi cũng không ngờ 53 năm bây giờ mới đem câu chuyện này ra. Những người làm trong AP với tôi tại sao năm mươi mấy năm trước không tố cáo, đợi bây giờ mới tố cáo chuyện này? Trong lúc những người làm việc của AP tới nay vẫn còn tố cáo ông Robinson. Họ nói: "Anh em làm việc chung với mà tại sao ông lại nói Nick Ut như vậy?" Vào dịp kỷ niệm 50 năm ( chấm dứt chiến tranh Việt Nam ), cũng có một cô giám đốc của AP tới dự lễ ở Sài Gòn. Cô đã nói thẳng với ông Carl Robinson: "Nick Ut có làm gì ông đâu mà ông tố cáo ông ấy ăn cắp hình này kia?" Ông không trả lời gì hết. Trong bộ phim, họ khẳng định là khi xảy ra vụ ném bom ở Trảng Bàng, từ cái góc đang đứng thì ông không thể chụp được bức hình "Em bé Napalm" nổi tiếng đó. Một người phóng viên thì không phải đứng một chỗ, tôi phải chạy cùng hết. Khi thấy bom nổ, tôi chụp bằng ( ống kính ) tele ( chụp từ xa ). Sau khi cô Kim Phúc bắt đầu chạy ra với mấy đứa em cùng với quân đội Việt Nam Cộng Hòa thì tôi chạy tới chụp hình đó, rồi tôi chạy thụt lùi lại. Tôi chạy cùng hết, bởi vì tôi biết là Kim Phúc sẽ tới chỗ nào để mà ngừng lại Những hình ảnh đó sẽ được chiếu thứ sáu tuần này ( 05/09/2025 ) tại Visa pour l'image, hàng chục tấm hình tôi đều có. Ông tài xế ông nói ông có một bức hình mà hình của ông ấy bây giờ ở đâu, phim của ông ấy đâu? Không bằng chứng gì hết! Lúc tôi về hãng AP để tráng phim, tôi không phải là người tráng phim, mà do một người Nhật tráng phim thành ảnh. Lúc đó tôi rất là bận với phỏng vấn của hãng AP và sau đó tôi đi về để đợi quay trở lại Trảng Bàng sáng sớm hôm sau cùng với ông giám đốc của tôi và một người reporter. Ngày hôm sau, tôi tới đó khoảng 8 giờ sáng thì gặp bố mẹ Kim Phúc đang chạy trên quốc lộ đi tìm con. Tôi chụp hình cha mẹ đang chạy đi tìm thì tôi mới hỏi: “ Bà kiếm ai?” Bà nói là đang tìm một đứa con gái mà hôm qua đến nay không có tin tức". "Con tên gì?" "Tên là Kim Phúc". "Con bà tôi đã đưa bệnh viện rồi, không biết còn sống hay chết, bởi vì cô đã bị cháy phỏng hết rồi". Hai vợ chồng nhảy lên xe đò chạy về Củ Chi để vô thăm con. Bức hình quá nổi tiếng, cho nên Kim Phúc chỉ nằm trong bệnh viện có mấy tiếng đồng hồ thì được đưa về bệnh viện Sài Gòn ngay. Sau khi bức hình được đăng lên báo trên toàn thế giới, chính phủ Mỹ yêu cầu tất cả bác sĩ cố cứu sống Kim Phúc. Lúc đưa vô bệnh viện thì họ nghĩ là Kim Phúc sẽ chết, nên để cô nằm chung với mấy người đã chết rồi. Khi thấy cô còn tỉnh họ mới đưa về bệnh viện Sài Gòn cứu cấp . Những nhân chứng của tôi trong trận Trảng Bàng mà còn sống thì bây giờ có ông Dave Burnett và những người phóng viên đã làm cho báo New York Times. Họ đã lên tiếng rất nhiều. Thế còn cô Kim Phúc, "Em bé Napalm" trong bức ảnh, có đã lên tiếng về vụ này chưa? Cô đã lên tiếng rất nhiều. Cô khóc và nói: “Tại sao chú tôi chụp hình tôi và đưa tôi vô bệnh viện mấy chục năm nay không ai nói về bức hình đó, tại sao bây giờ tố cáo chú Nick Ut của tôi?” Cô đã đưa lên Facebook hết rồi chứng nhận "chú tôi đã chụp hình và đưa tôi đi bệnh viện. Đã mấy chục năm chú tôi lúc nào cũng gọi điện thoại thăm mỗi tuần”. Tôi sẽ gặp lại cô Kim Phúc tại Washington ngày 09/09. Về quyết định của World Press Photo liên quan đến tác giả bức ảnh "Napalm Girl" này thì ông có nhận định như thế nào? Thật ra tôi không có bao giờ để ý chuyện đó, bởi vì hình đó là của AP. Như vậy sắp tới đây ông sẽ có những hành động gì để chống lại những khẳng định đó? Bây giờ tôi có hai luật sư. Luật sư của tôi bên Mỹ và luật sư tại Paris. Họ sẽ đưa bộ phim ra tòa, hy vọng là phim này sẽ bị hủy bỏ. Đạo diễn phải rút lại bộ phim đó. Bởi vì người bỏ tiền ra làm phim đó là ông Gary Knight. Chúng tôi đã làm việc với nhau tại Hà Nội cách đây ba năm. Tôi không ngờ người bạn mà tôi mới biết đây tự nhiên đi làm phim để tố cáo tôi. Trả lời qua email trong cuộc trả lời phỏng vấn độc quyền với BBC ngày 17/5, ông Nguyễn Thành Nghệ đã khẳng định ông không phải là lái xe làm việc cho đài NBC mà là một phóng viên tự do, đi cùng anh rể là Trần Văn Thân, người làm việc cho NBC. Vào ngày 8/6/1972, NBC khi ấy đang không có tài xế trong khi ông có bằng lái nên đã tình nguyện chở nhóm phóng viên đến hiện trường và hôm đó ông mang theo duy nhất một chiếc máy ảnh Pentax. Thật ra, chính hãng tin AP cũng đã nhìn nhận "cuộc điều tra của chúng tôi đặt ra những câu hỏi quan trọng mà có thể chúng tôi sẽ không bao giờ có thể trả lời được", "hơn năm mươi năm đã trôi qua, nhiều người liên quan đã qua đời, và công nghệ có giới hạn của nó". Theo hãng thông tấn Mỹ, "có nhiều khả năng" là bức ảnh được chụp bằng máy ảnh Pentax, trong khi Nick Ut đã tuyên bố trong một số cuộc phỏng vấn rằng ông sử dụng hai máy ảnh Leica và hai máy ảnh Nikon vào hôm đó. AP cho biết thêm: "Câu chuyện là Ut đã chụp bức ảnh bằng máy ảnh Leica. Cuộc điều tra của AP cho thấy điều đó rất khó xảy ra. Tranh cãi có thể sẽ còn kéo dài, nhất là vì, theo thông báo của các nhà sản xuất và đạo diễn, hãng Netflix vừa mua lại bộ phim "The Stringer" và sẽ chiếu trên nền tảng của họ trong năm nay. Tuy nhiên, Netflix hiện chưa đưa ra thông báo chính thức về vụ này.
Những tranh cãi xung quanh bức ảnh nổi tiếng “Napalm Girl” ( Em bé Napalm ) đã bùng lên kể từ khi một bộ phim được chiếu tại Mỹ khẳng định tác giả của bức ảnh này không phải là Nick Ut mà là một người khác. Trong suốt 53 năm qua, bức ảnh “Napalm Girl”, còn được biết dưới cái tên "Terror of war" ,vẫn được xem là biểu tượng cho sự tàn khốc của chiến tranh Việt Nam. Bức ảnh được chụp ngày 08/06/1972 tại Trảng Bàng khi máy bay của không quân Việt Nam Cộng Hòa ném bom napalm nhầm mục tiêu vào một thánh thất Cao Đài nơi mà một nhóm phụ nữ và trẻ em lúc đó đang trú ẩn. Trong ảnh, người ta thấy Kim Phúc, một cô bé 9 tuổi, bị bỏng nặng, thân thể lõa lồ vì quần áo bị cháy hết, cùng với một số trẻ em, từ làng Trảng Bàng vừa chạy vừa la khóc đau đớn, hoảng loạn trên quốc lộ, trước khi bất tỉnh và được đưa vào bệnh viện. Chính nhờ bức ảnh này mà ông Nick Ut, một phóng viên nhiếp ảnh trẻ làm việc cho hãng tin Mỹ AP ở Sài Gòn lúc ấy, trở nên nổi tiếng thế giới: Ngay ngày hôm sau “Napalm Girl” được đăng trên trang bìa của New York Times, gây chấn động dư luận quốc tế. Tác giả của bức ảnh ngay năm đó được trao Giải Pulitzer về báo chí. Sang năm 1973, tổ chức World Press Photo ( Giải Báo ảnh Thế giới ) đã trao giải “Bức ảnh của năm” cho “Napalm Girl”. Thế nhưng, ngày 16/05/2025, World Press Photo lại thông báo tạm ngưng ghi tên tác giả của bức ảnh “Napalm Girl” là Nick Ut sau khi một bộ phim tài liệu của đạo diễn Mỹ gốc Việt Bảo Nguyễn tựa đề “The Stringer: The Man Who Took The Photo”, được trình chiếu lần đầu tiên tại Liên hoan phim Sundance ngày 25/01/2025. Các tác giả của bộ phim khẳng định, sau nhiều năm điều tra, thật ra tác giả của bức ảnh ”Napalm Girl” không phải là Nick Ut, mà là ông Nguyễn Thành Nghệ, được giới thiệu là một “nhà báo tự do” (a stringer). Bộ phim dựa trên cuộc điều tra của nhà báo Mỹ Gary Knight về tuyên bố vào năm 2022 của Carl Robinson, một nhân viên của hãng tin AP ở Sài Gòn năm 1972. Theo Robinson, ông đã được Horst Faas, trưởng bộ phận ảnh của AP tại Sài Gòn vào thời điểm đó, ra lệnh phải ghi Nick Ut là tác giả bức ảnh, vì Nick Ut là phóng viên chính thức của hãng tin. Bộ phim phỏng vấn rất nhiều người, trong đó có một số phóng viên có mặt tại Trảng Bàng ngày 08/06/1972, nhưng lại không hỏi hai nhân vật chính trong câu chuyện này là Nick Ut (hiện sống tại Mỹ) và bà Kim Phúc (hiện sống ở Canada). Sau một cuộc điều ra riêng của World Press Photo, giám đốc điều hành World Press Photo, Joumana El Zein Khoury, đưa ra một tuyên bố vào tháng 5: "Mức độ nghi ngờ quá lớn để duy trì việc ghi nhận tên tác giả như hiện tại". Tuy nhiên, World Press Photo cũng không ghi lại tên tác giả bức ảnh. Theo trang mạng PetaPixel, ông Bảo Nguyễn, đạo diễn phim "The Stringer" đã hoan nghênh quyết định của Worlfd Press Photo. Đạo diễn phim đã viết vào tháng 5: "Những phát hiện của họ kết luận rằng, dựa trên các bằng chứng hình ảnh và kỹ thuật hiện có, Nguyễn Thành Nghệ, một nhiếp ảnh gia người Việt Nam lâu nay bị lãng quên, dường như có nhiều khả năng là người chụp bức ảnh này hơn Nick Ut. Việc xem xét lại này một phần được thúc đẩy bởi bằng chứng được trình bày trong "The Stringer", một bộ phim tài liệu điều tra do tôi đạo diễn với sự hợp tác chặt chẽ của một nhóm các nhà báo và đoàn làm phim, nhiều người trong số họ là người Việt Nam.Sự công nhận này có ý nghĩa sâu sắc đối với tất cả chúng tôi, những người tham gia. Nhưng trên hết, nó đại diện cho bước đầu tiên quan trọng trong việc ghi nhận người mà chúng tôi tin là đã thật sự chụp bức ảnh đó: Nguyễn Thành Nghệ. Chúng tôi hy vọng thế giới sẽ biết đến và gọi tên ông ấy". Ông Bảo Nguyễn còn khẳng định rằng "The Stringer" không phải là một bộ phim về Nick Ut, mà là một cuộc khám phá sự thật, ký ức và "gánh nặng thầm lặng của một người đàn ông đã mang trong mình một bí mật hơn năm mươi năm". Ngay sau khi được trình chiếu, bộ phim đã gây tranh cãi rất nhiều trong giới phóng viên nhiếp ảnh quốc tế, nhiều người tin vào những khẳng định trong phim “The Stringer”, nhưng cũng có nhiều người nghi ngờ tính xác thực của bộ phim. Về phần mình, ngay trước khi "The Stringer" được trình chiếu lần đầu tiên, hãng tin AP đã bác bỏ những khẳng định trong bộ phim và đã tiến hành các cuộc điều tra riêng để đi đến kết luận là không có lý do gì để thay đổi tên tác giả của bức ảnh “Napalm Girl”. Ngay sau khi World Press Photo đình chỉ quyền tác giả của Nick Ut cho bức ảnh "Em bé Napalm", ba nhân vậy nguyên là chủ tịch và giám khảo của World Press Photo đã viết một bức thư ngỏ bày tỏ sự thất vọng trước quyết định của tổ chức này và yêu cầu World Press Photo khôi phục quyền tác giả của Nick Ut. Tính đến đầu tháng 6, 400 nhiếp ảnh gia chuyên nghiệp đã ký vào bức thư đó. Mặc dù không nêu rõ ai là người chụp bức ảnh nổi tiếng “Napalm Girl”, bức thư ngỏ cho là "vẫn chưa có đủ bằng chứng không thể chối cãi" để có thể kết luận đó không phải là ảnh do Nick Ut chụp. Cũng nhằm biểu thị sự ủng hộ đối với Nick Ut trong vụ này, năm nay ban tổ chức Liên hoan Ảnh Báo chí Thế giới "Visa pour l'image" tại thành phố Perpignan của Pháp, mà giám đốc là ông Jean - François Leroy, ngay từ tháng 5 đã mời ông đến dự. Trả lời RFI Việt ngữ ngày 02/09/2025 tại Perpignan nhân Liên hoan Visa pour l'image, ông Nick Ut cho biết: “Họ đã mời tôi cách đây mấy tháng rồi. Nhân dịp này tôi vừa tới thì gặp ông Jean - François Leroy hôm qua. Ông rất mừng khi gặp lại tôi và ông nói: “Chúng tôi ủng hộ Nick Ut trong vụ bức hình Em bé Napalm”. Họ rất là phản đối, bởi vì bức ảnh “Em bé Napalm” đã từng được nói rất nhiều tại Pháp, nhất là tờ báo Paris Match đã từng sử dụng bức hình này rất nhiều. Cách đây ba mươi mấy năm, Visa pour l'image cũng đã từng mời tôi tới đây và tôi đã gặp những phóng viên nổi tiếng, họ luôn luôn ủng hộ tôi. Khi bức hình đó được làm thành phim “The Stringer”, họ rất bực tức và phản đối luôn cả World Press rất nhiều. Cách đây hơn một năm tôi đã nghe câu chuyện đó. Sau đó phim thành hình là phim “The Stringer”. Tôi cũng đã coi phim đó rồi. Phim hoàn toàn là không đúng sự thật, bởi vì họ nói ảnh đó là tôi lấy của một người làm cho NBC. Thật ra ông ấy không phải là nhà báo, mà là một tài xế được mướn mấy tiếng đồng hồ một ngày thôi. Báo chí Việt ngữ nói ông ấy là một nhà báo làm cho đài truyền hình là không đúng sự thật, tại vì tất cả những người Việt Nam làm cho báo Mỹ trong thời chiến tranh tôi đều biết hết. Tôi được người bạn từ bên Úc gọi tôi một cái message ( tin nhắn ) nói rằng ông Nghệ không có làm báo gì hết. Ông ấy đi du học ở tại Mỹ năm 63 vào thời ông Diệm, học một khóa học về truyền hình tại New Jersey, nhưng thật sự là học làm tình báo. Khi trở về Việt Nam, ông là sĩ quan Việt Nam dưới chính quyền Sài Gòn, chuyên đi khai thác tù binh. Vào ngày 08/06/1972 ở Trảng Bàng, ông ấy đứng nhìn vào máy hình để bắt những tù binh của Cộng sản về điều tra. Người bạn tôi cho biết là trước khi mất nước năm 75, ông Nghệ đã được tòa đại sứ Mỹ đưa đi trước một tháng. Chỉ có những người nhân viên mật vụ của Mỹ mới được đi sớm. Ông này chưa làm nhà báo bao giờ! Ông chỉ là một tài xế lái xe chở những người của đài truyền hình cameraman, soundman đi Trảng Bàng hôm đó. Tôi cũng không ngờ 53 năm bây giờ mới đem câu chuyện này ra. Những người làm trong AP với tôi tại sao năm mươi mấy năm trước không tố cáo, đợi bây giờ mới tố cáo chuyện này? Trong lúc những người làm việc của AP tới nay vẫn còn tố cáo ông Robinson. Họ nói: "Anh em làm việc chung với mà tại sao ông lại nói Nick Ut như vậy?" Vào dịp kỷ niệm 50 năm ( chấm dứt chiến tranh Việt Nam ), cũng có một cô giám đốc của AP tới dự lễ ở Sài Gòn. Cô đã nói thẳng với ông Carl Robinson: "Nick Ut có làm gì ông đâu mà ông tố cáo ông ấy ăn cắp hình này kia?" Ông không trả lời gì hết. Trong bộ phim, họ khẳng định là khi xảy ra vụ ném bom ở Trảng Bàng, từ cái góc đang đứng thì ông không thể chụp được bức hình "Em bé Napalm" nổi tiếng đó. Một người phóng viên thì không phải đứng một chỗ, tôi phải chạy cùng hết. Khi thấy bom nổ, tôi chụp bằng ( ống kính ) tele ( chụp từ xa ). Sau khi cô Kim Phúc bắt đầu chạy ra với mấy đứa em cùng với quân đội Việt Nam Cộng Hòa thì tôi chạy tới chụp hình đó, rồi tôi chạy thụt lùi lại. Tôi chạy cùng hết, bởi vì tôi biết là Kim Phúc sẽ tới chỗ nào để mà ngừng lại Những hình ảnh đó sẽ được chiếu thứ sáu tuần này ( 05/09/2025 ) tại Visa pour l'image, hàng chục tấm hình tôi đều có. Ông tài xế ông nói ông có một bức hình mà hình của ông ấy bây giờ ở đâu, phim của ông ấy đâu? Không bằng chứng gì hết! Lúc tôi về hãng AP để tráng phim, tôi không phải là người tráng phim, mà do một người Nhật tráng phim thành ảnh. Lúc đó tôi rất là bận với phỏng vấn của hãng AP và sau đó tôi đi về để đợi quay trở lại Trảng Bàng sáng sớm hôm sau cùng với ông giám đốc của tôi và một người reporter. Ngày hôm sau, tôi tới đó khoảng 8 giờ sáng thì gặp bố mẹ Kim Phúc đang chạy trên quốc lộ đi tìm con. Tôi chụp hình cha mẹ đang chạy đi tìm thì tôi mới hỏi: “ Bà kiếm ai?” Bà nói là đang tìm một đứa con gái mà hôm qua đến nay không có tin tức". "Con tên gì?" "Tên là Kim Phúc". "Con bà tôi đã đưa bệnh viện rồi, không biết còn sống hay chết, bởi vì cô đã bị cháy phỏng hết rồi". Hai vợ chồng nhảy lên xe đò chạy về Củ Chi để vô thăm con. Bức hình quá nổi tiếng, cho nên Kim Phúc chỉ nằm trong bệnh viện có mấy tiếng đồng hồ thì được đưa về bệnh viện Sài Gòn ngay. Sau khi bức hình được đăng lên báo trên toàn thế giới, chính phủ Mỹ yêu cầu tất cả bác sĩ cố cứu sống Kim Phúc. Lúc đưa vô bệnh viện thì họ nghĩ là Kim Phúc sẽ chết, nên để cô nằm chung với mấy người đã chết rồi. Khi thấy cô còn tỉnh họ mới đưa về bệnh viện Sài Gòn cứu cấp . Những nhân chứng của tôi trong trận Trảng Bàng mà còn sống thì bây giờ có ông Dave Burnett và những người phóng viên đã làm cho báo New York Times. Họ đã lên tiếng rất nhiều. Thế còn cô Kim Phúc, "Em bé Napalm" trong bức ảnh, có đã lên tiếng về vụ này chưa? Cô đã lên tiếng rất nhiều. Cô khóc và nói: “Tại sao chú tôi chụp hình tôi và đưa tôi vô bệnh viện mấy chục năm nay không ai nói về bức hình đó, tại sao bây giờ tố cáo chú Nick Ut của tôi?” Cô đã đưa lên Facebook hết rồi chứng nhận "chú tôi đã chụp hình và đưa tôi đi bệnh viện. Đã mấy chục năm chú tôi lúc nào cũng gọi điện thoại thăm mỗi tuần”. Tôi sẽ gặp lại cô Kim Phúc tại Washington ngày 09/09. Our tour guide had informed us there were nine known caves and the complex had never been fully explored due to the remaining waterways being totally submerged. It was well past midnight, all my little friends had crashed out and I had wisely ditched my security after Miyako silently woke me up with her hand over my mouth.She pulled my hand to her lips and sucked deeply on two of my digits. I took this to be an indicator to me she was in dire need of loving. The grotto was my idea. I was inspired by my desire to see her naked and I couldn't risk a light source any place but underground. The tool shed and garage lacked a certain appeal. The fuel depot and septic tank were also ruled out."Is the chaos in your mind still raging, Cáel?" Miyako asked in Nipponese, with enough worry to doubly enhance her cuteness."Which of the twenty-seven unexplained languages rolling around in my head do you want me to answer you in?" my toothy grin barely visible in the darkness.Around half way through my sexual enlightenment in college, I had a revelation. Miyako joined me and then, by moonlight, we swam to the point where the guide had said we'd find a passage to a secluded grotto. Down we went. My motivation wasn't sex.That was coming no matter what. Seeing my Nipponese sweetie completely nude directed my course of action. Security protocols meant no lights after 11 p.m. My solution was to cut on a light that couldn't be seen from outside, the grotto. We felt our way along the rather wide submerged passage emerging well before air became an issue. I raised the lantern and cut it on.Our tour guru had forgotten to mention that the algae patches along the sides and bottom as well as the quartz veins on the roof and walls reflected the light over what must have been an eight by ten meter cavern. Gorgeous. We glided to a shelf that met our needs, climbed up and shared a high school 'nervous virgin' moment. Her eyes, when her gaze met my own, had that void that comes from a tortured life punctuated by horrors you witness as well as ones you are forced to perform.That was from "me". The electron swarm inside my mind provided another crucial piece of the puzzle. Utukku, phantoms, dead denied entrance to the Nether Realms, trapped between, until some sin had been lifted. The spirit gave me a look of shock, then turned and fled."We are in danger," I hissed to Miyako in Nipponese, before cutting off the lantern.I dove in, angling for the tunnel we'd entered by. I was close enough not to jab my fingers into the stone surface as I clawed my way through. I didn't burst noisily to the surface on the other side. My approach was that of an alligator, slowly letting my head crest the surface so I could look around. No one was in evidence. Miyako was soundless at my side as we scramble to the hiding place of our gear.Miyako held my hand back until she was sure our belongings hadn't been booby-trapped. I had to make quick judgment call: how time critical was this? I went the 'clothes and weapons' route."What is going on?" Miyako spoke quietly."Back there, I saw a feminine Asian ghost and the last time I witnessed such a pained, hopeless look, I was confronting the Seven Pillars," I told her. "Their slave had that same doomed stare.""There are only two things here of value," Miyako made her assessment. "You and the children. You are far more accessible in New York City, so it must be the children." We pressed ourselves tightly to the cave sides when we heard the sound of footsteps coming our way. It was Charlotte, my minder for evening, with her bow notched and ready.Firearms were kept to a minimum after hours, so bows were the order of the day, except for the snipers on the mesa top. My movements must have alerted her. I sat down and continued dressing."Charlotte, the Seven Pillars know we are here, they know the camp is here," I told her."How imminent is the threat?" Charlotte knelt beside me. I didn't know."They must be close, to be making a reconnaissance of the caves," Miyako said with tactical certainty."It was drawn to you, Charlotte, you were out of place, so this thing looked further. Otherwise these caves are irrelevant," she added. Miyako had the mindset of a seasoned professional spy."The cavern and spring have a night guardian," Charlotte countered. "I saw her when I was following you two here."I had on my light bulletproof vest (no shirt), shorts (no underwear) and shoes (no sox)."Let's go check on her to see if she's seen anything," I suggested/ordered.What I had assumed was some sort of bedroll brought by Miyako turned out to be a Ninja Survival pack. This allowed me to weapon up while she dressed up. The amount of time we were taking still ate at my nerves. Charlotte stopped me from heading out first, only to be stopped by Miyako. The ninja slipped out like a cool desert breeze.(Friend, Enemies and those In Between)Thirty seconds later, a plastic BB bounced off my right shoulder. This time, I was leading Charlotte out. No one spoke. We couldn't see Miyako anyway, now dressed in her black pajamas and her face being reduced to just one slit for her eyes. We found the Amazon dead at her post. She was in a cunningly crafted blind not easily spotted from any direction.A quick sweep for 'gifts' left behind revealed nothing, but the corpse yielded plenty. She was shot multiple times with two separate flash and sound suppressed submachine guns. The woman had been alive when we came down and if there had been a firefight, Charlotte would have heard the shots, if not seen them; thus the suppression. The bullet holes suggested a small caliber weapon.Miyako stepped up, held up three fingers. Every piece of the Amazon's gear was still on her. The attackers had shot up her phone box. Wireless communications were deemed too risky so all the outposts had buried land lines. At this point, a few seconds of extra effort stood between the Seven Pillars and success; that and the Goddess Paranoia.Had the assailants yanked up the box and cut the phone line, it would have been rendered useless. Instead, they shot up the device and moved on so that when Charlotte pulled out the cache of concealed goodies, including the spare phone box, we were back in business. As Charlotte got to work switching out the busted for the back-up, I studied our situation.Advanced teams taking out the perimeter guards, and most likely the snipers, didn't make much sense. The camp had 300 highly motivated Amazons. Cutting them off temporarily from their armory and vehicles didn't make any sense, since all Amazons were armed anyway. That left timing. But timing meant nothing if I didn't have the goal of their attack.It came as a double-whammy. The Chinese place a high premium on family and the Seven Pillars had mastered a sadistic art form of turning young foreign women into their concubine/assassins. The Condotteiri would have slaughtered the entire camp. The Seven Pillars would want to kidnap the children, both as current bargaining chips and as future tools.500 girls, 400 could be kidnappable. The oldest would go down fighting with their sisters. How did you get 400 kids out of here? Helicopters? That would be a fuck load of helicopters taking out their team and the children. Besides, helicopters alone couldn't dig them out of their cave and cliff-face strongpoints.Desert, no waterways. That left the road. You couldn't use ATVs, not enough carrying capacity. The smart move would be to have tractor-trailers parked alongside the hard top state road. They would use smaller, more rugged trucks to ferry their captives out to the semis. That suggested some sort of 'cover/support' vehicles.2 half ton trucks with weaponized Hummers providing fire support a la 'Blackhawk Down' and that meant the bridge and the BBQ pit. That objective would solve both of the Seven Pillars problems, moving the main assault group into close contact with the Amazons so the Amazons couldn't organize a defense, and removing their hostages in a prompt manner so they all could be gone before anyone else could react.The Seven Pillars had to have secured the bridge and were mostly likely replacing the missing piers. It was the choke point of their battle plan. Worse for them, it wasn't part of a barricade where they could attrition the Amazon numbers with vehicle mounted heavy weapons. The ditch ran north-south, bow shaped with the arch to the west and was over a kilometer from the camp.The flanks were purposefully strewn with huge boulders that limited traffic to horse and motorcycles, no four-wheelers. They had to have control of the bridge, so that's where I went."Charlotte, I'm going to the bridge," I whispered before slipping out of the blind. I didn't order Miyako to follow me and I was sure Charlotte wanted strangle me for departing from her protective custody.There are four kinds of fights, be they between armies, or individuals. Set-piece (sparring), assaults, ambushes and meeting engagements. I was about to be in the latter one. Meeting engagements happen when opposing forces are set on goals that unknowingly intersect one another. One of the most famous battles in US history, Gettysburg, was a meeting engagement.I was using the bone-dry culvert because we feared the Seven Pillars had replaced our snipers. Miyako was, somewhere else. The enemy commandos used the same conduit to avoid having the remaining Amazon pickets spot them and raising the alarm. I had little doubt that the three men speedily moving south were heading for the grotto and its three inhabitants (Charlotte, Miyako and me).Not knowing that I could both see ghosts and guessed who its demonic masters were, they assumed we were still in the caverns. Me not knowing how this whole ghost-scout thing worked, I assumed that I had a chance of surprising them at the bridge if I moved fast enough. In a final prick of irony, they misinterpreted the role their snipers played in our engagement.They believed that their snipers would alert them if anyone moved on the bridge, ignoring the fact that the snipers didn't have a complete view of the gulch. I was only using the big ditch because I was afraid they had taken out the Amazon snipers and now had the high ground, which turned out to be true. Thank you, Goddess Paranoia.My first tomahawk was in my left hand and my Glock-22 was in my right. My fear of snipers and the bend in the gully saved my life. We literally ran into each other, me and the first 7P soldier. His long barreled Type-05 was pointing past my left, his torso slammed into my pistol, ramming his front armored plate against it as it discharged.The proximity muffled the sound of the gunshot. The bullet failed to punch through his impressive body armor, but the resulting force knocked him down and out. Unfortunately, our shared momentum knocked my gun out of my grasp. My right hand went for tomahawk two. The flattened man's team mates swung their submachine guns my way.Halfway through his shift, a black dart flew out of the western darkness, past the first one, then snapped back. The action caused the hardy thread to wrap around the barrel of his weapon. I couldn't see her, but I knew it was Miyako with her flying wedge with the thread attached. The middle guy was startled and not moving as his training dictated.That allowed me to use him as a shield against the third guy. Right as 7P #2 decided to release his weapon, I kicked him hard into the confused man behind him. Neither man went down, but I still got what I wanted.Guy number three's main weapon was trapped to his right as I rushed his left. Vainly he tried to get an arm up to defend himself. My right tomahawk shattered his forearm at the elbow joint. Only the body armor on the inside of the blow stopped the appendage from falling off. My rational mind was catching up with my instincts.These men had on head-to-toe ballistic body suits with knee guards and solid ballistic inserts for the front and back of the torso. They had on some sort of dull, dark-grey respirator mask which was why the armless guy wasn't screaming his head off. They also had matte black circular ear protections and a type of high tech visor on the ears and eyes respectively.The sole survivor was falling back, drawing his silenced pistol while trying to put some distance between us and find Miyako at the same time. Dummy, tomahawks are designed for throwing. A bit of Amazons indignation was behind that toss. His visor was cut in two as my anger drove the blade 6 cm/2+ inches into his skull.I heard a sharp crack of a rock being shattered. Miyako's graceful flip landed her at my side. I ran to the last victim, put my foot on his chest and put my right hand on the tomahawk's shaft. The guy reached up and grabbed the thigh of the foot on his chest with both hands. Shit, the fucker wasn't dead!

They discuss his background - being raised in Providence, Rhode Island and tracing his ancestor's journey to America from Cape Verde. How he discovered his love for making art at a young age and how his mother and father encouraged his interests. How he cultivated his artistic abilities. How he began his studies as a Political Science Major… to converting to art — studying painting at Southern Illinois University, where he was a graduate assistant to Allan Kaprow and eventually received an M.F.A. from CalArts. Having a video studio in New York. A conscientious objector of the Vietnam war… being jailed for draft evasion… and how all of these experiences have shaped his life. The artists that have inspired him and the many exciting adventures he has had - while traveling widely in Europe, Africa, China and the Middle East during the 1970s and 1980s. Documenting the end of Portugal's colonial rule in Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau. They discuss how his work has evolved through the years… being known as “The Grandfather Video" — to his passion for painting which is now his primary medium. Why he left the United States to now — living in the South of France and the exciting projects he has in store..! Guest Bio: Performance and media artist Anthony Ramos was among the earliest video artists to use the medium as a tool for mass media critiques and cultural documentation, and to examine media presentations of "truth." In his powerful but rarely seen video works of the 1970s, Ramos sought to combine art and activism, giving agency to marginalized individuals and communities. In his earliest black-and-white video pieces, Ramos engaged in forceful, direct performances for the camera, often using physical endurance and actions to confront political issues.Ramos has traveled widely in Europe, Africa, China and the Middle East. He videotaped the end of Portugal's colonial rule of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, Teheran during the 1980 hostage crisis, and Beijing just prior to the Tiananmen Square massacre. Ramos produced a number of video works that critique the media through deconstruction and appropriation, and explore the relation of mass cultural imagery, African-American identity, and the politics of race in America. In the late 1980s he turned to painting as his primary medium.Ramos was born in 1944 in Providence, Rhode Island. He received an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts, where he was assistant to Allan Kaprow. Among his awards are a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship. In the 1970s Ramos was a video consultant for the United Nations and the National Council of Churches. In the 1980s, he lived in Paris where he was a Professor at the American Center, and oversaw the television cabling of ten blocks of Paris for the first time. He has also taught at Rhode Island School of Design, New York University, and the University of California at San Diego. Post 1956, several battles are fought between North and South Vietnam. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution of 1964 gives US President LBJ authority to increase US involvement in the Vietnam War. This is followed by targeted bombings under Operation Rolling Thunder by the US and counter offensives by the Viet Cong like the Tet Offensive. Agent Orange and Napalm droppings lead to a massive ecocide with severe after effects on the human population. Paris Accords of 1973 call for a ceasefire and North Vietnam triggers one last offensive towards reunification.
