There's a belief that after the death of Buddy Holly rock & roll lost its way until the arrival of the Beatles. Early '60s rock was still growing in popularity, but the airwaves were ruled by teen idols, girl groups and novelty songs. However, that's not the full story. Richard Aquila is the author of Rock & Roll in Kennedy's America: A Cultural History of the Early 1960s.
It was the thing you could only dream about, to revisit one of your teen idols crushes from back in the day. This happens to be a different circumstance because the crush flame has been burning bright for at least 20+ years. Since Josh Hartnett wandered into the mainstream (yes he has been working) last year with a part in Oppenheimer and this year in Trap, I had to get Samantha of @lovefool.99 back on the pod to talk one of our favorite actors. We both were so excited to talk recent moments of this press tour, our thoughts on Trap, run through his filmography, and of course get into the reason for his 'infamous' 90s haircut. Raized Wrong is two young brothers, Landon and Lyric Goldberg, and their father Donny. They are a newly minted but third generation family band. Donny, along with his dad and brother head up a Beach Boys tribute band called Surf's Up. Having learned his trade well from his dad, Donny is passing it on to his sons, ages 12 and 13. Their tight vocal harmonies on classic hits have shot their TikTok following climbing quickly towards a million and Lyric and Landon are on a fast track to teen idol heights so we hooked them up with a man who's been there, Bob Cowsill of The Cowsills.Bob understands pop melodies and intricate harmonies and he is duly impressed with the tight sounds of this accomplished and talented family band. Together, they are talking about musical roots and inspirations, sibling harmonies, parents in the band, rehearsal and performance experiences and balancing childhood with show business. Plus, Lyric and Landon go to Teen Mag Nosy Question school with Bob who has answered his share of them. You will remember when you first knew that Raized Wrong is on its way to musical history.Path Points of Interest:Raized WrongRaized Wrong on TiktokRaized Wrong on YoutubeRaized Wrong on FacebookRaized Wrong Mama Facebook GroupRaized Wrong on InstagramRaized Wrong MerchRaized Wrong on PatreonRaized Wrong on The Cowsills PodcastThe Beach Boys - "Feel Flows" The Sunflower & Surfs Up Sessions 1969-1971The CowsillsThe Cowsills on FacebookThe Cowsills PodcastFamily Band: The Cowsills StoryFamily Band: Trailer

“Born To Archive" Alright, so imagine this: The thing you do really well as a kid becomes your career. In the case of my guest today on the program, that's exactly what happened. Jackie Clary is a born archivist. As a young girl growing up, she was a huge fan of Wham! and George Michael, and she started collecting ephemera that was related to them and their music. But it wasn't just that—Jackie had a librarian like penchant for cataloging and preserving a lot of things that extended far past Wham! Jackie has had a really cool career and this list of her accomplishments is only a partial one, but one eI read through it, you'll get the idea of what she's done. She worked at Reelin' In The Years, researching and cataloging a 20,000 hour strong cache of interview and music performance, she ran the tape library for ABC news affiliates, she worked for MTV News and Docs, produced the videos for the Roots Rhymes and Rage: The Hip-Hop Story at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was the lead curator of the Hall's first Teen Idols exhibit, she worked on a lot of DVDs, including Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Definitive Performances 1963-1987, The Temptations 1963-1972 and she interviewed Englebert Humperdinck for h is Greatest Performances DVD. She was the associate producer on the 12-DVD Merv Griffin box set, produced an oral history on Newport Beach's Carden Hall School, and she worked as the archivist on documentaries by everyone ranging from Little Richard to the new movie Still: A Michael J. Fox. Jackie is the coolest and in this chat she talks about how her curatorial skills emerged early on as a kid packed the road to where she is now. www.jackieclary.com www.bombshellradio.com www.embersarts.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Question Kyle joins me for musings on concept albums as I fondly recall the 1999 gimmick-compilation "Short Music for Short People" from the pop-punk mavens at Fat Wreck Chords. The idea: 101 bands, 101 songs, each one 30 seconds long. The royalty of the genre all contributed - Blink-182, NOFX, The Offspring, everyone you remember from the late Clinton years. An impressive, if not especially listenable, idea for an album. The podcast opens with a brief sample of "Ketchup Soup" by the Teen Idols, their contribution to this album. To purchase the album, please visit the Fat Wreck website for a digital download or other format. Bonus: 29 minutes in I start singing "Uptown Girl." In this very special episode, Donna reunites with her longtime friend – actor, singer, and advocate Paul Petersen! Paul joins Donna and Dr Adam to reminisce about his role on The Donna Reed Show, talk with Donna about their decades-long friendship and to tell listeners about the important work of his organization, "A Minor Consideration", founded to protect the welfare of young performers. You will not want to miss this very special reunion! Paul Petersen was one of the biggest teen idols of the ‘50s and ‘60s. He started his career as a Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club and played alongside Sophia Loren and Cary Grant in the film "Houseboat", playing Cary Grant's son. From there, he took on his star-making role as Jeff Stone on The Donna Reed Show (1958-1966). Hit records “My Dad” and “She Can't Find Her Keys” followed, and he even wrote a series of spy-adventure novels! Paul was a good friend and confidant to Donna during her '60s career, escorting her to various events including the Deb Star Ball, and they supported each other through the turbulence that can come with having a teen career. It was Paul's empathy for the plight of child stars, having been one himself, that led to his founding "A Minor Consideration" in 1991, an organization that supports young performers and advocates for legislation to protect them while they work in the entertainment industry.

GenX ladies, get ahold of yourselves - this week, Heather Zeitzewolfe and I are completing reminiscing from our early adolescent years of the 1970's as we fawn over our favorite teen idols who you might have seen on the cover of a Tiger Beat magazine. Or Teen Beat, or "16," or maybe even the TV guide itself! And with no internet in the 1970's (or podcasts, or E!TV for that matter), these mags were where a teen girl might go for all the latest celebrity boy gossip. I actually had a subscription to Tiger Beat for a little while (Thanks, Grandma Agnes); and while some of our choices might not have made it to the cover of Tiger Beat, they were still, in our opinion, the cutest boys of the 1970's - with disco, classic rock, AM radio, and all of the other things. There is also some rather fun editorial banter from my hubby, Charles, who is also a GenX child of the 70s...totally could not get him to leave the room during the recording. Anyway - don't forget that my co-hosts and I really want to hear from you! GenX ladies - who was your favorite Tiger Beat cover boy? And what do you think of our lists? Shoot us an email at hello@thetopfivepodcast.com and let us know what you think!!
Travis Howell started playing the drums because his dad told him he couldn't. His first band, No Remorse, was the first metal band to grace the Lucy's stage and the first and only to be mistaken for neo-nazis. Sloppy, a punk-metal hybrid kind of thing, came next and then Adrenaline Hammer, which went on to become 12V. When 12V sold out Lucy's, Travis realized a long-held dream. Travis' time at Lucy's included seeing bands like Javachrist, Impetuous Doom, Teen Idols, and the Wesley Willis Experience (“Rock over London! Rock over Chicago!”), judging Green Day's choices, and some bad behaviors. The last would lead to his decision to quit playing drums cold turkey. He didn't touch a stick for 14 years. Then he went to church. Host Mary Mancini sits down with poet and artist Christine Hall. Christine was raised in a trailer at the edge of the Adirondacks by troubadours and cultist pornographers. Inculcated with American mythology—tool girl calendars, bible stories, science fiction—she built on this education while hitching across the continent. Before she set off on her travels she was a teenager at Lucy's trying to find her way out of a difficult and painful childhood. Christine found Lucy's to be a safe space and her story has a happy ending, but the safety she found inside didn't always prevent her from acting out her trauma in dangerous and self-destructive ways on the outside. Now at home in the Nashville arts community, Christine hosts the Poetry in the Brew open mic. Her work has appeared in Out & About Nashville, several anthologies including Sinew (April Gloaming Publishing, 2021), Be About It zine, on MTA buses, and on stages with the Yoni Pearl Monologues, Cabaret Noir Collective, TSU, Third Man Records, and OZ Arts. Author, playwright, and producer Chip Deffaa knew David Cassidy's most intimate life stories like few others. As ghost writer of David's autobiography, C'mon Get Happy: Fear and Loathing on the Partridge Family Bus, Chip spent weeks with David going over the highs and lows of his life -- including reviewing all of the recordings taped by Elliot Mintz (see episode 1) as part of his research. Chip provides insight into the real David Cassidy that few others can. For more about Chip, visit www.ChipDeffaa.com.
Part 2 of conversation with Ann Moses, former Tiger Beat editor and author of "Meow: My Groovy Life with Tiger Beat's Teen Idols." Ann discusses why David Cassidy seemed burdened by an inner sadness even at the height of his fame, his relationships with Partridge Family cast members, and why we continue to be fascinated with David 50 years after the Partridge Family TV series went on the air in September 1970.
Ann Moses was a typical California teenager when she began writing about the music scene in Hollywood in 1965. From 1965 to 1972, her job at Tiger Beat made her the youngest editor of a national magazine in the country. There, she interviewed all the fan favorites -- from Paul Revere and the Raiders to Bobby Sherman, the Monkees, the Osmonds, and of course, David Cassidy, star of ABC's The Partridge Family. Ann spent hundreds of hours interviewing and observing a young Cassidy on set, witnessing his transformation from a very young, aspiring actor to a world-famous concert artist.

This episode will concentrate on various new developments in the late '50s and early '60s, notably the popular folk music style of that period. We'll introduce some of the precursors of that movement (e.g., Pete Seeger and the Weavers) as well as some of the most popular folk artists such as the Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Joan Baez. Turning to the Teen Idols, we'll briefly examine stars such as Pat Boone, Paul Anka, Fabian and others with a nod toward Dick Clark and his influence on that (and other) early ‘60s trends. We'll finish with an introduction to the California surf music style, focusing on the early Beach Boys.
90s TEEN IDOLS JONATHAN TAYLOR THOMAS, DEVON SAWA, JONATHAN BRANDIS, BRAD RENFRO, ANDREW KEEGAN, and RIDER STRONG For our very special Valentine's Day episode, we're taking a look back at the fanatic love we had back in the day for the 1990s' biggest teenage heartthrobs. If you didn't have a poster of Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Devon Sawa, Jonathan Brandis, Brad Renfro, Andrew Keegan or Rider Strong on your wall and would stare at it for hours and maybe even practice kissing on it... well, you clearly were more emotionally mature than we were as pre-teens. In this episode we dive into the history of teen idol mags like Tiger Beat and BOP, discover that LADYBUGS is most definitely not a movie for children, and try not to feel like creeps discussing the wholesome sex appeal of teenage boys. Also, Becky shares the intimate details of her internet relationship with JTT (or, more likely, someone pretending to be him). It's our most embarrassing episode yet! After more big news and the revelation of an amazingly exciting-to-Alison potential podcast booking, we discuss meeting people we've been huge fans of since childhood and the way these encounters don't always go as smoothy as we wish like when Jenna met a Backstreet Boy and Jeff met his favorite member of the Monkees. We also talk about who #AL wants to host his funeral (hint: it's not Jenna), Al's new restaurant NOR, the worst gymnastics lesson ever, gardening, Jenna's Vanderpump/Real Housewives rabbit hole and so much more. We also did a fruity cookie snack chat and doled out some advice to listeners who wrote in with questions about career direction and whether it's ok to end friendships that no longer feel particularly friendly. And we did a round of Just Me Or Everyone and talked about an adoptable dog with a cleft lip named Jasper.
Touch Sensitive’s debut single ‘Body Stop’ was one of the first tracks released on Future Classic, all the way back in 2004. Many grew up in the Georgetown and Northwest areas of DC, where they developed a sense of social justice by witnessing its injustices first hand - they were rich kids living in a privileged world, a social elite. Some of the many legendary DC bands: Minor Threat, Teen Idols, S.O.A., FUGAZI, Bad Brains, Dag Nasty, Swiz, Iron Cross, VOID, The Faith, Youth Brigade, Government Issue, Scream, Marginal Man, Gray matter, EMBRACE, Soul Side, rites Of Spring, Ignition, Worlds Collide, Damnation A.D., Battery, Ashes, Gauge, SEGMENT 3: Essential DC Hardcore Records from Our collections: DAG NASTY - Can I Say Original release 1986 Dischord Records Re-Released in 2002 on CD - CD contains bonus material Dag Nasty was a Washington D.C. melodic hardcore band formed in 1985 by guitarist Brian Baker of Minor Threat. Their style of less aggressive, melodic hardcore was influential to emocore, as well as post-hardcore. Check them out here: http://www.daghouse.com/ BAD BRAINS - Rock For Light Original Release 1983 on PVC Records Reissued 1987 Caroline Records ReMixed and Released 1991 Caroline Records. Bad Brains is an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington DC in 1977. They are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk. Bad Brains developed a fast and intense punk rock sound which came to be labeled "hardcore", and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. The unique factor of the band's music was the fact that they played more complex rhythms than other hardcore punk bands, also adapting non-punk style guitar riffs and solos into their songs. The second full-length album by hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains, released in 1983. A previous album, Bad Brains, was released in 1982 but only on cassette, therefore making Rock for Light Bad Brains' first proper album. https://www.facebook.com/badbrains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Brains MINOR THREAT - Out of Step Original Release - 1983 Dischord Records Out of Step is the sole studio album by American hardcore punk band Minor Threat. It was released on 45 RPM vinyl in April 1983 through Dischord Records. After a temporary break-up in 1982, Minor Threat entered Inner Ear Studios in January 1983 to record Out of Step. Recording duties were handled by Don Zientara. While the lyrics on their early EPs were an outlet for MacKaye's message, the lyrics on Out of Step deal mainly with friendships and problems associated with them. http://www.dischord.com/band/minor-threat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_Threat Other Links and Info: Dischord Records - http://www.dischord.com/ NYHC Book - http://www.bazillionpoints.com/shop/nyhc-new-york-hardcore-1980-1990-by-tony-rettman/ Bike Mechanic Tales From The Road And Workshop - http://www.velopress.com/books/bike-mechanic/ Cannondale CAAD10 - http://www.cannondale.com/nam_en/2015/bikes/road/elite-road/caad10 Nigel Tufnel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Tufnel Our Blog: Deathwish Racing - http://deathwishracing.blogspot.com/ Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member Email Kyle Email Mountain Bike Radio

Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon, Fabian, Bobby Vee and the other clean cut singers of the early 1960's bridged the gap between Elvis and the soon to be Beatles. This era brought a little acceptance and respectability from the adults of the decade. Also on this show is an interview with Jack Smink one of the premier Elvis Tribute artists in the country.
