"This is not a time to be dismayed, this is punk rock time. This is what Joe Strummer trained you for. It is now time to go. You're a good person. That means more now more than ever." - Henry RollinsWe could not have said it better, Henry. If 2025 isn't punk rock time, then when is? The word ICONOCLAST is defined by Merriam-Webster as “A person who attacks settled beliefs or institutions”. That sounds pretty punk rock to us. We need these folks now for their wisdom, their fearlessness and their heart. Our old friend Ryan Stockstad is back along with our new friend, first time ATTT guest Chris Bickel for a look at our favorite icons that embody the righteousness and goodness that is the spirit of punk rock. This week, we start a new series all about appreciating the shredded, gravelly, gritty, raspy pipes and throats of rock n' roll. We are focusing on lead singers who crafted truly special tones with their sandpapered delivery. Join us in celebrating these unique sets of pipes that set them apart from all the others. Anyone can scream, but only a few deliver gravel, grit & glory! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Our appreciation, this week, of rough and textured singing extends to all of the genres that we love. Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour & Alex Volz

This week we're discussing every album by both The Faith and Void. These two legendary hardcore punk bands will be forever linked because of their split LP from 1982. However, both bands couldn't be more different in their approach to punk. The Faith (whom Ian MacKaye's younger brother Alec fronted) was a prime example of quality songwriting and musicianship. Void, on the other hand, was pure ravenous chaos and inadvertent originators of extreme metal. Two of the best to ever do it.Closing tracks: “Slowdown” by The Faith from Subject to Change (1983); “Red Death” by Void from Potion For Bad Dreams (1983)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTubeSubstackWebsiteAlbums we discussed this episodes…Faith/Void Split (1982)Subject to Change EP by The Faith (1983)Condensed Flesh EP by Void (1992; recorded 1981)Potion For Bad Dreams (1983; unreleased)

It's a huge, beautiful book of black and white photographs taken by Saah of an astounding array of punk and post-punk groups, from the Ramones to Black Flag to Fugazi to Pavement. It also includes Saah's interviews with artists who work at the cross sections of music and imagery, including J. Robbins, Jon Langford, Shepard Fairey, and Ian MacKaye. As Jim writes, “I went through thousands of negatives to choose the hundreds of photos in this book. It was a joy to revisit all these images and remember how I felt and why I took them in the first place. I took these photos because I had to.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Jim Saah!

The Kings of Punk trace the band's journey from Danbury, CT to a central role in New York's punk underground alongside greats like Agnostic Front, with the group developing their sound and making a greater and greater impact on the American hardcore scene as they developed the straight edge ethos pioneered by hardcore musicians like Ian Mackaye and Kevin Seconds. The band's relationship with Krishna Consciousness and role in the early development of "Krishnacore" also receives some attention. Stay tuned for an in-depth journey through the roots of both the "Youth Crew" subculture and the subgenre associated with it. Website: kingsofpunk.com IG: @koppodofficial

Life of the Record
The Making of OUT OF STEP by Minor Threat - featuring Ian MacKaye

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2024 92:07

In celebration of the recently unearthed Out of Step Outtakes, we take a detailed look at the making of the original record. After Minor Threat formed in Washington D.C. in 1980, they began to find an audience in the American punk scene. Their first two seven-inch records contained songs written by Ian MacKaye, such as “Straight Edge” and “Out of Step,” which kickstarted the straight edge movement within punk. By 1982, guitarist Lyle Preslar had left for college and Minor Threat temporarily broke up. After speaking with H.R. of the Bad Brains, MacKaye was convinced of the impact the band was having and considered reforming. At that point, Preslar agreed to quit college and rejoin the band. Despite accusations of the band selling out by reforming, Minor Threat began playing shows in their hometown and embarked on a cross-country tour. Brian Baker decided to switch from bass to second guitar so they asked Steve Hansgen to join as the new bassist. In early 1983, they returned to Don Zientara's Inner Ear Studio to begin recording as a five-piece. Out of Step was eventually released in the spring of 1983. In this episode, Ian MacKaye describes this pivotal moment in the band's history when they decided to reunite and change their sound by adding a fifth member. Though they faced backlash about reuniting from their hometown crowd, this fueled the next batch of songs they would write as a band. MacKaye discusses how most of his lyrics on this record reflect the gossip and backstabbing that was prevalent in their scene at the time. In addition, tension within the band was rising over MacKaye's lyrics and their overall musical direction. The new version of the title track reflected their differences as Jeff Nelson convinced MacKaye to include a spoken word interlude that explained how the straight edge lyrics were personal to MacKaye and didn't represent the band's views. From Minor Threat's first 12-inch to a joke song about selling out to recording vocals live for the first time to the benefits of an expensive strobe tuner to hearing the call of punk to self-define, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Their original intent was simply to release a single to document their recently defunct band, Teen Idles. However, the label has gone on to release music from more than 60 bands, with more than 160 albums over the last 25 years and counting. As musicians Ian and Jeff went on to form Minor Threat, who along with Bad Brains are credited in the early 80s with introducing the D.C. hardcore ethic to an audience well beyond Washington, D.C. In 1986, Ian formed Fugazi with Joe Lally, Brendan Canty and Guy Picciotto. Over 20+ years the band has released seven albums and toured the world extensively covering all fifty United States, Europe, Australia, South America, Japan and many points in between. Fugazi is self managed and maintains a policy of affordable access to their work through low record and ticket prices and all concerts are all-ages. In 2003 Fugazi decided to take an indefinite hiatus from recording and touring as young families and other priorities began to take center stage. Since 2001, Ian has played in The Evens, a duo with Amy Farina. The Evens revel in short-circuiting the conventions of rock music and perform mostly in non-traditional music spaces — libraries, art spaces, schools, theaters, etc. They have released two albums and have toured extensively in North America, Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. Ian has also been taking on speaking engagements, delivering talks that take the form of informal Question and Answer sessions.

Franz Stahl, guitarist of seminal hardcore band Scream, helped shape the band's journey from its inception in 1979. Alongside drummer Kent Stacks(AKA Kent Stax), bassist Skeeter Enoch Thompson, and his brother Pete Stahl, Franz attended school in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia, where they discovered the punk and new wave scene of Washington, D.C.  Influenced by the Bad Brains like many other DC punk bands, Scream's fusion of punk with rock and roll set them apart. Their collaboration with Ian MacKaye and Eddie Janney led to the recording of Dischord's first full-length album, Still Screaming, in 1982. Over the years, they experienced lineup changes, with Franz's friend Harley Davidson joining on second guitar, and eventually, a local drummer named Dave Grohl. Scream's legacy endures, with their latest album, DC Special, set to release in November of 2023 on Dischord Records.

Moby on his Documentary Film PUNK ROCK VEGAN MOVIE

Today I'm joined by Moby to discuss his film ‘Punk Rock Vegan Movie! The new documentary will have its world premiere and be the Opening Night film for the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival on January 20 in Park City, Utah. The film, which is Moby's directorial debut, is a passionate and stylistically idiosyncratic look at the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk rock and animal rights. It includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history, like Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Andrew Hurley, Tony Kanal, Tim McIlrath, Water Schreifels, Dave Dictor, Derrick Green, Steve Ignorant, Theo Kogan, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Amy Lee, and Captain Sensible. Moby tells the story of how punk rock became such a fertile and surprising breeding ground for vegan activism. It's also a call to action, unapologetically reminding people that in a deeply broken world it's incumbent upon each of us to stand up and fight intelligently, passionately, and loudly against injustice. In the spirit of punk rock, Moby will be giving the film away for free following the Slamdance premiere. “'PUNK ROCK VEGAN MOVIE' was created to shine a light on the surprising and inspiring history of punk rock and animal rights, but also to remind people of the importance and desperate urgency of adopting the uncompromising ethics and actions of the original punk rock activists,” said Moby. “After it makes its world premiere at Slamdance, it's yours. It's my goal to give the movie away, as I can't in good conscience try to profit from what is essentially a labor of love and activism."
