What does it mean to become ecological? This is the burning question behind today's podcast episode with Kelly Moody. These days especially, the word "ecology" has been cycling around internet, sparking many, many conversations about what it means to establish new relationships with each other and the land. In this episode, Kelly and I discuss why becoming ecological is not so much about what we "know" about nature, but about recognizing our inherent relationship with the Earth, each other, and all things else. About Kelly Kelly Moody is the main curator behind the Ground Shots Project and Podcast as well as is one of the CO-collaborators of the Colorado Trail Plant-a-go project. She grew up in rural southern Virginia near the border of North Carolina in tobacco and muscadine country. Growing up here, she went to her grandma's house daily as a child, where fresh biscuits and iced tea were a regular necessity. Her other grandma was a determined plant lady who started a nursery business on the outskirts of their small rural town, which remained open for almost 50 years. Kelly grew up hiding with her sister in the tropical greenhouses, taking craft classes in the small nursery workshop, shelling green beans and canning tomatoes. These experiences of being on the family farm, working with plants and creating followed Kelly into her adulthood. The past decade she has spent living simply in different landscapes studying plants, ecology and craft, writing about the land, growing food and herbs, or honoring her wanderlust by living on the road. She received a B. A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies in 2009 from Christopher Newport University in Virginia. She has studied herbal medicine, land tending, ecology and botany with Rebecca Golden in southern Vermont, Paul Strauss and Chip Carrol at the Goldenseal Sanctuary in southeast Ohio, Luke Learningdeer and Marc Williams in western North Carolina. She apprenticed with Juliet Blankespoor and attended the Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine in Asheville, NC in 2013. She helped manage the gardens at Dancing Springs Farm in Asheville, NC from 2014-2016. She studied book arts and paper-making at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. She taught hide tanning techniques for classes held by the medieval bookbinder Jim Croft at his rural Idaho homestead from 2017-2019. She has completed a handful of art + activism focused artist residencies and workshops including Signal Fire's month-long Wide Open Studios program during the summer of 2017 in the Pacific Northwest and in the fall of 2019 in the Southwest. These programs greatly influenced the trajectory of her work connecting creativity and human relationship with ecology. In Summer 2020, she hiked the Colorado Trail documenting plants on foot and made notes on wild food and medicine gardens found along the old Ute pathways. Her educational work over the years has included holding classes on hide tanning, plant ID, wild foods, medicine making, natural dyes, nutrition and gardening. Kelly's interest in storytelling and cross-cultural dialogue comes from both an upbringing in the small-town rural south and the inspiration of meeting people while living on the road. Welcome one and all!!! This weeks guest is someone I've known for many years and had the pleasure of being in not one, but THREE bands with over the past decade and change. Booms is total legend of the Cambs music scene, having played with a plethora of bands on bass as well as Riffing the roof off once he switched to guitar. He's now swimming more mellower waters these days, going under the moniker Old Man Boom, playing his darkly sinister tunes on banjo, giving his latest musical project a delicious 'If Tom Waits settled down in St Neots with a wife and a dog, this is what he'd sound like....' twist. Marc brings his 'A' game when it came to selecting his 5 tracks to go into discussion and as you'll see we dart from country classics, to black metal, Nu progressive folk, heavy-as-shiiiiiiit post rock and onto legendary songwriting troubadours. It's a cracker of a natter and Marc's passion for the music shines through each of the stories behind each choice. Before the pandemic, litigator Marc Williams was one of the many legal professionals who thought remote work was reserved for emergencies. He assumed one had to be at the office to be most productive. Forced to manage a team in a tense and remote environment, Williams learned to embrace the uninvited reality. Williams and host Jill Francisco discuss the shift and realization that law practice wouldn’t return to a pre-pandemic normal even with vaccines. One example: Williams tells Francisco he expects expensive travel for depositions that can be handled remotely will be difficult to justify to clients. And as he’s already experienced, the search for talented paralegals doesn’t have to be limited by geography. Williams notes he hired a veteran litigation paralegal based in South Carolina to work on his team, based in West Virginia. No moves necessary. The two also discussed how paralegals could distinguish themselves and become invaluable members of legal teams. Marc Williams is the managing partner of the West Virginia office of Nelson Mullins. Special thanks to our sponsors, NALA, ServeNow, CourtFiling.net and Legalinc.

A potential factor to consider in reaching Black male youth is recruiting Black men to serve as mentors in order to provide Black boys with successful models from their community. Multiple assessments have been conducted to understand the barriers for African-American men serving as volunteers in youth mentoring programs and the impact is real. Marc Williams started a mentorship program called Young men of Promise and his guest speakers serve as role models as they introduce participants to an alternate blueprint for how to successfully live their lives. Both formal and informal mentoring have the potential to benefit Black boys in a range of areas, including academics, social-emotional well-being, mental health and preventing risky behaviors such as having sex and selling drugs. Group mentoring approaches seem to support Black male youth’s social-emotional development through group processes. This process may be facilitated by connecting Black male youth with mentors who have shared life experiences engaging Black men as mentors has the potential to be useful in this regard. I’m proud of the work Marc is doing up a Bald Eagle Recreation Center for all these years! According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an act of domestic violence occurs every 15 seconds in the United States, with four women losing their lives daily. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. The term “domestic violence” includes felony or misdemeanor crimes of violence committed by a current or former spouse or intimate partner of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabitating with or has cohabitated with the victim as a spouse or intimate partner. The ongoing anxiety, depression, emotional distress, eating and sleeping disturbances an physical symptoms, such as headaches and stomach aches. This impacts children the most and we’ve got to let women know it’s ok to talk about it so, they can get the necessary help. National Domestic Violence Hotline can help victims, survivors of domestic violence. Call 1-800-799-7233. You can chat w/ an advocate on their website. Rap artist, teacher, emcee, DJ, and Vice Principal, Mr. Kinetik, also known as Marc Williams, shares his story of how his passion has led him to be a leader in all of these spaces. When Marc was 15, he began freestyle rapping with his friends under the name Mr. Kinetik. The Butler Bulldog aspired to follow his stage name and pursue a degree in physics but turned to Recording Industry Studies after recognizing that it was his true passion.
