As TNT zeroes in on record labels this season, it was only a matter of time until Thanh + Tim made their way to the legendary Dischord Records. And what better to showcase the label than one of the heaviest hitting albums in all of post-hardcore, the foundational 1990 release “Repeater” by a little band named Fugazi. Enjoy this one, you ice cream eating motherfuckers!

Brendan Canty's work in Fugazi established him as one of rock's great drummers, but this thoughtful, multitalented artist has done much more than that. Rooted in Washington, D.C., Canty played with the hardcore bands Deadline, Rites of Spring, Happy Go Licky and One Last Wish before Fugazi, Deathfix afterward, and he currently is stretching out his jazz-punk chops in the instrumental trio Messthetics. He's also a soundtrack composer and filmmaker, having directed documentaries featuring Eddie Vedder, Wilco and others. Here Canty takes us deep into the music, where exploration and improvisation bang up against structure. He tells the story of Fugazi, from the breakout song “Waiting Room” and intense touring through the band's 2003 “indefinite hiatus.” And he explains how a big reunion would—or would not—jibe with Fugazi's values.
Ian MacKaye imbues 2024 with all goodness through his inspiring take on life and music. His knack for expressing the way he lives and what punk rock means to him dominates and radiates through this conversation with Rain. They discuss everything from spirituality to Fugazi, living life joyfully, and the importance of doing the work. We then launch The Bobby Lees and Sam shares about their decision to take a break in 2024 by highlighting the financial struggles bands face on the road. We close this special episode with THE BOBBY LEES infectious song “Radiator”. ----------------- LAUNCHLEFT OFFICIAL WEBSITEhttps://www.launchleft.com LAUNCHLEFT PATREON https://www.patreon.com/LaunchLeft TWITTER https://twitter.com/LaunchLeft INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/launchleft/ FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/LaunchLeft --------------------- LaunchLeft Podcast hosted by Rain Phoenix is an intentional space for Art and Activism where famed creatives launch new artists. Their original intent was simply to release a single to document their recently defunct band, Teen Idles. However, the label has gone on to release music from more than 60 bands, with more than 160 albums over the last 25 years and counting. As musicians Ian and Jeff went on to form Minor Threat, who along with Bad Brains are credited in the early 80s with introducing the D.C. hardcore ethic to an audience well beyond Washington, D.C. In 1986, Ian formed Fugazi with Joe Lally, Brendan Canty and Guy Picciotto. Over 20+ years the band has released seven albums and toured the world extensively covering all fifty United States, Europe, Australia, South America, Japan and many points in between. Fugazi is self managed and maintains a policy of affordable access to their work through low record and ticket prices and all concerts are all-ages. In 2003 Fugazi decided to take an indefinite hiatus from recording and touring as young families and other priorities began to take center stage. Since 2001, Ian has played in The Evens, a duo with Amy Farina. The Evens revel in short-circuiting the conventions of rock music and perform mostly in non-traditional music spaces — libraries, art spaces, schools, theaters, etc. They have released two albums and have toured extensively in North America, Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. Ian has also been taking on speaking engagements, delivering talks that take the form of informal Question and Answer sessions.
Jeff Tweedy, songwriter and founding member and front man of the GRAMMY Award-winning rock band Wilco, reflects on why we listen to music, why we love songs, and how music can connect us to each other and to ourselves in World Within a Song: Music that Changed My Life and Life that Changed My Music. In conversation with Brendan Canty, a musician and filmmaker best known as the drummer in Fugazi, and currently The Messthetics. This program was held on November 8, 2023.

As part of our mini 'New Zealand' series I chat with my son Brendan Canty and his girlfriend, Ayla Amano on their very last day of quarantine in the Holiday Inn in Auckland. They describe the detailed routine, the testing, the food, the exercise, the room confinement, the transparency and the lengths that the government go to, ensuring that any trace of Covid is caught and does not enter the country, keeping their citizens healthy and safe and enjoying living normal lives. All of this in stark contrast to the "living with Covid" approach, which has everyone in Ireland done in at this stage. Enjoy the show! In this episode I catch up with my son Brendan Canty and his girlfriend, Ayla Amano from the Holiday Inn in Auckland on day 2 of their 14 day quarantine. They chat about the journey from Ireland, the testing regime along the way, how the hotel manage their unusual guests (or are they prisoners?) and how the Kiwis feel about these "extreme" measures. Brendan says he was surprised by that sense of overwhelming relief getting away from the Irish Covid cloud, which is slowly but surely gnawing at all of our minds. My son Brendan and his girlfriend Ayla, who comes from Auckland in New Zealand begin their journey to New Zealand complete with visas and Covid tests and face a two week quarantine period in a hotel when they get there. Not much needs to be said about this one. Not much can be said. The self-titled Rites Of Spring LP is my all-time favorite Dischord release. It was an honor to have the opportunity to talk to Brendan Canty about the record and the band in general. We also got Matt Ryan (Bitter Branches/Calvary) to share a bit about what this record meant to him. "Drink deep..."

This week we’re discussing Fugazi, the band Mike openly calls “his Beatles.” One summary isn’t enough to explain the profound impact this band has had on independent music, but we will say that Fugazi was formed in Washington DC by former Minor Threat frontman Ian Mackaye and Joe Lally. The two quickly recruited drummer Brendan Canty and second guitarist/vocalist Guy Picciotto. Very few bands in the world have the raw chemistry that Fugazi did and the bond between each member shined through every one of their albums. We like them a lot and this is one of our most gushy episodes by far. Listen to this one before any other episode. Brendan Canty is one of our generations most influential drummers from one of our most influential bands, Fugazi, but thats not all. He's a documentarian, film producer, record producer and multi-instrumentalist. He's worked with Wilco , Eddie Vedder, Lois Maffeo and The Thermals to name a few. Since Fugazi's indefinite hiatus, Brendan has produced dozens of records, scored several films and started his own projects Death Fix and Messthetics. In 2018/19, he was also the touring drummer for The MC5. Somehow, he's never been too busy to be a genuine, nice guy with an unrelenting work ethic. In this episode Brendan tells about the first time his parents came to a show and how Fugazi escaped a riot at their own show in Warsaw.

Today’s episode is the second which I recorded at the Blue Mountains Ukulele Festival in February. I had a chat to another Melbourne-based duo – this time, Sue Kidd and Brendan Canty, who perform together as Duplicity. We had a great chat in my Airbnb with the rain bucketing down outside, which gave the recording a little extra atmosphere at times! I’m sure you will enjoy this one. Congratulations to our resident Captain Fiddle on the release of his superb new album, which is out now so go and listen to it! As such, he's not here this week. Filling in is the wonderful Brendan Canty, a man who knows a thing or two about music videos and Big Thief, which is helpful as that's our big album review this week... ACT ONE: Go listen to Daithí's album! ACT TWO: One of the most red-hot news sections in some time takes in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations, Pharrell suddenly listening to 'Blurred Lines' for seemingly the first time, that Joker song inclusion, and Elton John's Lion King remorse. ACT THREE: Songs of the Week featuring Pusha T, Harry Styles, and William Doyle. ACT FOUR: Big Thief return with Two Hands, their second album this calendar year. Very much the lo-fi critical darlings of the moment, is the hype justified? EXIT MUSIC: BATS - 'Ergot'
Pairing one of today’s most gifted jazz guitarists (Anthony Pirog) with one of rock ‘n’ roll’s fiercest rhythm sections (Brendan Canty and Joe Lally) was always going to be a recipe for success, but on their sophomore LP Anthropocosmic Nest, Washington, D.C.’s The Messthetics are blowing past the old goals and delivering one of the most raucous and satisfying releases of the year. Wildly inventive with surprises awaiting the listener at every turn, Nest is an ecstatic proclamation of skronk-and-circumstance that says not only are The Messthetics BACK, but they’re here to stay! We’re part of the Osiris podcast network. This Week: Part Two of our conversation with Ian MacKaye. Four years ago, we began The Trap Set with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty. As we expand the show from drummers-only to all musicians, it only makes sense to begin with Brendan’s bandmate, Ian.
Brendan Canty, best known as the drummer of legendary American post-hardcore band Fugazi, recounts memories of growing up in Adams Morgan, Washington DC and becoming a professional musician.
As a member of bands such as The Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Embrace, Fugazi, and The Evens—as well as co-founder of Dischord Records—Ian MacKaye has been involved in the creation and dissemination of an extraordinary amount of classic recordings. Ian met with Joe at The Dischord House in Virginia for a wide-ranging conversation that lasted nearly three hours. In this week’s installment, Ian discusses: his childhood in the Glover Park neighborhood of Washington DC; his grandmother’s advice column; his love of Ted Nugent and The Beatles; how skateboarding informed his view of the world; discovering punk rock; his lifelong entrepreneurial spirit; co-founding Dischord Records; and how he often doesn’t listen to music for the lyrics. Four years ago, we began The Trap Set with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty. As we expand the show from drummers-only to all musicians, it only makes sense to begin with Brendan’s bandmate, Ian. Tune in next week for Part Two!

Consisting of Joe Lally and Brendan Canty of Fugazi and DC-based guitarist Anthony Pirog - The Messthetics are a lean and muscular instrumental punk-prog powerhouse. Bill and Brian hang out with musician Nick Palmer (normally, we'd link to the band's website here, but Brian and I were discussing how awesome "Generation Gap" by WAX WAV is, so click this link and go watch the kickass video for it: ) and discuss Fugazi's Repeater (1990, Dischord). All the prerequisite talk about punk and what it means to punk happens, but we also discuss Ian MacKaye and Guy Piccioto's politically/emotionally charged lyrics that are still relevant today and the awesome musicianship of the rhythm section, Joe Lally and Brendan Canty. This and more as we make our way through the album track by track!
Fugazi mattered. From their strict $5 admission policy, to never selling merchandise to infamously preventing their audiences from slam dancing they lived and breathed the DIY ethic and set the standard for every other band to try to live up to. Their approach to the business side of music was admiral and impressive but insignificant if the music itself wasn’t great and it certainly was that. From the airtight rhythm section of Joe Lally and Brendan Canty to the perfectly unique vocal interplay of Ian McKaye and Guy Picciotto they were a perfect musical storm that made six incredible albums starting with 1990’s Repeater. Not only is Brendan Canty the uber dynamic, dub pocket, punk rockin' , bell blastin' drummer of such monumental bands as Rites of Spring, and Fugazi he also does soundtrack/film scoring work. We get into his new band with Fugazi bassist Joe Lally; The Messthetics, the evolution of Fugazi’s records and the tough task of acknowledging your back catalogue without repeating it, his love for Gretsch kits (he’s only had two all these years), touring then vs now, reel to reel decks and stop watches, growing up seeing Minor Threat and the Bad Brains, how he fell into soundtrack work plus some Fatherly advise as well!!

An episode which focuses on the pro riders using Zwift, taking in current pro riders, a new pro rider in the form of Leah Thorvilson, the winner of the Zwift Academy scheme which used the platform as a talent trawl and a former pro rider who’s discovering a new lease of racing life virtually. Shane and Nathan get the day off as Simon travels to Girona to spend some time with the Cannondale Drapac team. Whilst there, he caught up with Andrew Talansky and Taylor Phinney, huge stars on the World Tour circuit and enthusiastic Zwifters. Leah Thorvilson has just completed her first UCI races with her new team Canyon SRAM, WMN Cycling. She talks frankly about the “horrifying” aspects of racing as part of the pro peloton but also how much she’s learning - and how fast. Adrian Timmis raced the Tour de France in 1987 as part of the ill-fated Halfords ANC British team. Now he’s back racing, but on Zwift and he’s as competitive as ever. Adrian reflects on his experiences. This episode is also packed with pro tips, from the pros, on how they use the platform to hone their form. Hear about “favourite” intervals from Patrick Bevin; Ryan Mullen; Tom Skujins – and what a debt Brendan Canty owes to the Zwiftcast’s very own Shane Miller. There’s also an interview with the team’s performance director, Keith Flory, explaining the value of indoor training.

It's Episode 100, and our first guest, Fugazi's Brendan Canty, returns as guest host to extract the origin story of Joe Wong and The Trap Set. Joe talks about his childhood in Milwaukee; meeting his composing partner in the experimental theater scene; scoring for film and tv; and his time with artists such as Parts & Labor, Mary Timony, Marnie Stern, and Akarso.
On July 16, 2016, Alan Vega died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 78. In a statement, Vega’s family said, “With profound sadness and a stillness that only news like this can bring, we regret to inform you that the great artist and creative force, Alan Vega has passed away. Alan was not only relentlessly […]
Change isn’t always easy when you’re a punk rock band — particularly one with a sound beloved and well-defined as The Thermals. After a pair of well-received LPs that cemented the Portland band’s place as one a low-fi, distortion-laden indie power-pop trio, the group released its masterpiece, The Body, the Blood, the Machine. Produced by Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, the album was a dystopian concept record of sorts, that channeled Bush-era anger into the tale of a young couple forced to flee an authoritarian government. In 2010, the band offered up Personal Life, a far more somber and deliberate album that went a ways toward polarizing the band’s fanbase. This year’s We Disappear marks a return to form for the band after the somewhat disappointing performance of 2013’s Desperate Ground, both building upon the simple punk rock the band does best, while incorporating lessons learned from their more emotionally complex outings. It’s alternately anthemic and somber, a reflection on maturing while hanging on to one’s pop-punk roots. Lead singer Hutch Harris sat down ahead of the band’s fiery Bowery Ballroom performance to reflect on the ups and downs of the band’s illustrious career.
Conan Neutron's Protonic Reversal
This is the story of how, apart from his obvious ability, Brendan Canty used social media to get a PRO contract with Pro-Continental team, Drapac Pro Cycling, two years after his first race. Brendan's, is a story about how his success is a result of social connectivity through social media such as Strava, Instagram and Twitter. It’s also a story about the consequence of the technology we embrace, and how cycling is no less affected by this. semiprocycling.com/online

It’s very rare that we get to feature a MTV Video Music Award nominee at Banter but Brendan Canty ticks all those boxes. The Cork video director and film-maker was nominated for his work on Hozier’s “Take Me To Church”. During Eventbrite's 'Do Business Better' series in Cork over the summer, Brendan spoke to us about how he got started, the various stages in his career so far, the Hozier effect, the other projects he's involved in and his motivation to keep on keeping on.
On the latest episode of the Point of Everything, Eoghan and Caoilian are joined by Brendan Canty of Feel Good Lost to chat about their two MTV VMA nominations on Sunday for Hozier's 'Take Me To Church'.
Hozier’s video for Take Me to Church has been nominated for two VMA awards, Best Direction Award and Best Rock Video of the year. Stephen spoke to Brendan Canty from a Cork production company called Feel Good Lost, who co-directed the video.
Joe talks to Brendan Canty, drummer of the legendary band Fugazi, about growing up in an environment of “benign neglect”, writing music in bands and as a film composer, and fatherhood.
Here's a preview of Joe's interview with Brendan Canty, drummer of the legendary punk band Fugazi. Brendan talks about the only time his dad saw the band perform live. Full episode will be available on Wednesday, January 28, 2015.
