The Cold Never Bothered You? These Winter Horror Books Will Change That

Fully-Booked: Literary Podcast

We begin this discussion by welcoming our listeners to another episode of the Fully-Booked Podcast, where we delve into the spine-chilling realm of winter horror. As we reach the midpoint of February, the cold remains a dominant presence, and with that in mind, we decide to explore horror stories set in winter landscapes.Winter horror is particularly effective in creating a sense of isolation and claustrophobia, trapping characters in dire circumstances, and heightening tension and anxiety. The conversation leads us to consider the best time to read winter horror - whether it should be reserved for the cold months to enhance immersion or if it remains just as impactful year-round.The Power of Winter in Horror NarrativesWe think that winter settings amplify horror elements by isolating characters through impassable snowstorms and relentless cold. This limitation of movement, whether due to severe weather or environmental obstacles, creates a heightened sense of vulnerability. Horror thrives on fear, desperation, and entrapment, and winter conditions intensify these emotions. The characters are not only battling supernatural or psychological threats but also nature itself. As we examine various books in the winter horror genre, we see common themes emerge. The environment itself becomes a malevolent force, exacerbating already dire situations. The cold, darkness, and loneliness intertwine with the horrors lurking within, making these stories particularly gripping.Winter Horror Book RecommendationsThe Shining by Stephen KingWe begin our exploration with The Shining, one of the most famous winter horror novels. It follows Jack Torrance and his family as they become the winter caretakers of the Overlook Hotel, an isolated, snowbound resort. The novel masterfully uses the winter setting to amplify Jack's descent into madness, highlighting themes of addiction and personal demons.Stephen King's own experiences with alcoholism make this story deeply personal, and the setting enhances the feelings of being trapped - both physically and psychologically. The supernatural elements of the Overlook Hotel prey on these vulnerabilities, turning the setting itself into an antagonist. The hosts note the differences between King's novel and Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation, which King famously disliked. While the film focuses on a more straightforward horror narrative, the novel explores deeper psychological and thematic layers, particularly addiction and the cycle of abuse. The Terror by Dan SimmonsThe Terror offers a blend of historical fiction and supernatural horror, fictionalizing the real-life doomed Franklin Expedition of the 1840s.Trapped in the Arctic ice, the crew faces not only starvation and scurvy but also an unknown supernatural force lurking in the landscape. The novel excels at conveying the utter desolation of the frozen Arctic, where isolation and hopelessness become the crew's greatest enemies. The hosts praise Simmons' detailed research and ability to make the cold itself feel like a character, evoking a profound sense of unease and dread.Near the Bone by Christina HenryThis novel intertwines winter horror with psychological terror, following a young woman trapped in an abusive relationship in an isolated mountain cabin. The story takes a sinister turn when evidence of a monstrous presence emerges in the surrounding woods. The novel cleverly uses winter's isolation as a metaphor for domestic abuse, reinforcing the protagonist's entrapment and powerlessness. The hosts appreciate how Henry creates a suffocating atmosphere where both human and inhuman horrors coexist, making for an unsettling read.At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. LovecraftLovecraft's novella explores an Antarctic expedition that uncovers ancient, otherworldly horrors beneath the ice. The story embodies Lovecraftian cosmic horror, where the unknown and incomprehensible threaten human sanity. The isolation of the Antarctic setting, combined with the protagonists' slow descent into terror, makes this a classic example of winter horror. Though the hosts acknowledge Lovecraft's problematic legacy, they recognize the impact of this work on the horror genre.[related-link2] Dead North: Canadian Zombie Fiction (Anthology edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia)This collection of short stories brings a Canadian twist to the zombie apocalypse. The cold, harsh winter landscapes serve as both a refuge and a challenge, as freezing temperatures incapacitate zombies but also create new survival difficulties. Some stories play with the concept of zombies freezing solid, making them less of a threat, while others explore human struggles in extreme conditions. The hosts find this anthology fascinating, particularly in its representation of Canadian settings and survivalist themes.Other Notable Winter Horror StoriesMisery by Stephen KingAlthough not a supernatural horror, Misery uses winter's isolation to intensify its psychological terror. A famous novelist is held captive by his obsessive fan, completely cut off from the outside world due to a snowstorm. The claustrophobic setting and the protagonist's helplessness create an atmosphere of dread that aligns with the themes of winter horror.Boys in the Valley by Philip FracassiSet in a remote Catholic orphanage during a brutal winter, this novel follows a group of boys facing a growing supernatural evil. The winter setting enhances the sense of being cut off from the outside world, and the novel's use of possession themes adds to its disturbing nature. Let the Right One In by John Ajvide LindqvistThis Scandinavian vampire novel features an unlikely friendship between a bullied boy and a mysterious girl. The frigid Swedish winter enhances the bleak atmosphere, and the story uses its setting to explore themes of loneliness and violence. The novel was later adapted into a highly acclaimed Swedish film and a decent American remake (Let Me In).30 Days of Night (Graphic Novel by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith)Set in an Alaskan town where the sun doesn't rise for an entire month, this vampire story cleverly uses the prolonged darkness as a hunting ground for bloodthirsty creatures. The hosts praise the concept as one of the most intelligent uses of setting in horror fiction, though they note that the film adaptation failed to fully capitalize on the story's potential. The Impact of Winter HorrorThe hosts conclude that winter horror stories work exceptionally well because they heighten feelings of vulnerability, powerlessness, and isolation. These stories tap into deep-seated fears of being trapped and alone, making the setting itself a fundamental part of the horror experience. We invite listeners to share their favorite winter horror reads, as there are undoubtedly more chilling tales waiting to be discovered. Whether read during a snowy night or in the middle of summer, these stories remind us of the power of a well-crafted setting in evoking fear and suspense.

We're going up in the world this week – longitudinally and latitudinally, with the GOAT of endurance, adventure Gothic, Michelle Paver. Michelle joins me for a big conversation about her novels Dark Matter and Thin Air – two of the most effective ghost stories of the 21st century. One takes us to the Arctic, the other to a Himalayan peak, both places littered with the dead… who may still be around. We talk about how ghost stories work, their tradition and what perhaps differentiates them from horror. We consider the challenge of writing heroes with imperial perspectives, and Michelle relates her own, eerie, dangerous experiences out in the frozen wilds. This is perfect winter listening, even if we did record it in July.  Enjoy! Books mentioned: Wolf Brother (2004), by Michelle PaverThe Abominable (2013), by Dan Simmons30 Days of Night (2002), by Steve Niles and Ben TemplesmithThe Others of Edenwell (2023), by Verity Holloway“The Kit Bag” (1908), by Algernon Blackwood Cold Earth (2009), by Sarah MossNumber 90 and Other Ghost Stories (2000 rpt) B.M. Hey Horror Fans Welcome back to Coffee Chat of Horrors. Today we're going to be taking a deep dive into the 2007 Horror Movie 30 Days of Night. So, grab a cup of coffee and a brain, and settle in for the undead ride of your life. Based on the graphic novel by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, 30 Days of Night is a terrifying story about a small Alaskan town that experiences a month-long period of darkness. During this time, a group of bloodthirsty vampires descend upon the town, feeding on the unsuspecting residents. Directed by David Slade, who is known for his work on other horror films such as Hard Candy which is a great film a little hard to watch in some aspects and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse You have no idea how hard it was to say that without laughing because Vampires do not sparkle and WTF. I still have no idea why people would watch sparkly vampires but to each their own and NO i have not seen the films at all. Slade's directing style in 30 Days of Night creates a chilling atmosphere that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Stalk Me: Twitter Youtube Instagram Tiktok Facebook Twitch

Steve Niles is an American comic book writer, novelist, screenwriter, and producer with a prolific portfolio of groundbreaking horror comics including Criminal Macabre, Ash & the Army of Darkness, Batman: Gotham County Line, Ghosts of Krypton, a Superman adventure and October Faction upon which the Netflix show is based. Steve also wrote the original comic and adapted the screenplay for 30 Days of Night among many, many other things.  Steve is also the co-founder of Monster Forge, an extremely exciting production house specializing in monster-centric projects that extends across film, animation, games, comics and even toys! Steve co-founded Monster Forge with Shannon Eric Denton and I spoke to both of them all about Monster Forge back on episode 67, so be sure and check that out.  Steve is a legend in the world of horror and someone I'm a big big fan of. I was extremely excited to talk to him about his career history, writing & creative processes, and his favorite new movies & comics. Please enjoy this conversation with Steve Niles.  Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Steve Niles.  Save everything. As a prolific creator, Steve is always writing and frequently working on multiple projects simultaneously. Therefore, his mind is always coming up with ideas for his many projects which is why he has a system for capturing ideas as they come to him so that when it comes time to write, he can face the page with a backlog of material to start from. Whether you are an Evernote power user, a scrapbook keeper, or simply using your notes app on your iPhone, it's critical that you give yourself permission to be a hoarder of ideas.  As a creator, your ideas will rarely come to you fully formed, and instead usually show up as small disparate details that are looking to be developed - this is why you will want to begin capturing all of this material as it comes to you so that you can arm yourself against writer's block with a wealth of concepts that can be molded to fit your current project.  Heed the Punk Rock ethos of DIY. A few directors have cited the punk rock as crucial inspiration for their approach to film, including Larry Fessenden. Steve is no exception. Having played in multiple punk bands like Gray Matter and Three, Steve was imbued with the DIY (do it yourself) ethos of punk rock at an early age and it completely dictated his approach to his career. In a nutshell, the DIY punk ethos states that you should never wait for any larger entity to give you an opportunity but instead create your own opportunity entirely by creating your own platform. This came about primarily in the '70s and ‘80s when a ton of punk bands couldn't get signed by mainstream labels forcing them to launch their own labels out of necessity. Similarly, Steve's early graphic novel work was considered a little too transgressive so instead of pitching to multiple publishers, running the risk of rejection, Steve opted to start his own graphic novel label with Arcane Comix and his career took off. This is huge because when you own your work outright, you're effectively shielded from the corporate entities who often want to water your work down to sell more copies or mold your material into the mainstream. This mentality is a slow death for most artists, so whenever you can, keep things punk rock and do it yourself.    KISS; keep it simple stupid. Steve has collaborated with some of the greatest minds in horror, including Rob Zombie, Sam Raimi, Clive Barker, Wes Craven, and John Carpenter. One of the things he's learned from them is how the strength of their ideas usually lies in their simplicity. They collectively have relatively simple concepts which allow their work to truly sing since it's not weighed down by complicated story elements. This is a big trap that a lot of writers fall into; brimming with ideas, most writers want to pack their stories full of multiple concepts, storylines, and endless amounts of details only to distract and disengage the reader with a bloated storyline. Simplifying, on the other hand, allows nuances like the artists' style, vision, and world to shine through since it's not bogged down by overly complex details.  Simplicity, however, is not easy to come by, and actually requires more work than complexity. As the old saying goes, “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” So heed the advice of the masters of horror as you're developing your stories - the simplest distillation of your idea is usually the best version of it. Thank you for listening! Don't forget to subscribe.  ----- Produced by Simpler Media

In this episode, our two comic aficionados read "30 Days of Night" by Steve Niles with art by Ben Templesmith. To get some insight into what it is really like to live that far north, they are joined by Dan Summers; a resident of Ulukhaktok in Northern Canada. Ulukhaktok is as close to the North Pole as the real Barrow (Utqiagvik), Alaska from the story. In the original three issue mini series published in 2002, Eben Oleman and his wife Stella make up the entire police force of Barrow. An evil group of vampires descend upon the town after hearing that the town suffers from 30 days of nightfall; allowing them to feed without the burden of sleep. As the townspeople are slaughtered, an ancient vampire named Vicente arrives to keep the knowledge of vampires a secret. He ultimately settles to kill the entire town, resulting in Eben injecting himself with vampire blood to become a creature of the night himself. In honor of Halloween (again), we discuss horror comics, eating horse meat, other people, and touch on other deliciously terrifying topics. Daniel Morbach, resident graphic novel expert (okay, maybe not resident, since he calls in from Kansas City) and Ky Richmond resident (for real) art critic weigh in on the three titles we have picked. Cast Hosted by Dean Karpowicz, with Daniel Morbach and Ky Richmond. Content Discussed I Am Legend, Steve Niles (adaptation), Elman Brown (Illustrator) Richard Matheson's classic novel of fear and vampirism - the tale of the last human on an Earth overrun by the undead - returns to graphic novel format in a single volume collection of four long out-of-print books. Hungry Ghosts, Anthony Bourdain (author), Joel Rose (author), Alberto Ponticelli (illustrator), Irene Koh (illustrator), Paul Pope Illustrator On a dark, haunted night, a Russian Oligarch dares a circle of international chefs to play the samurai game of 100 Candles--where each storyteller tells a terrifying tale of ghosts, demons and unspeakable beings--and prays to survive the challenge. Inspired by the Japanese Edo period game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, Hungry Ghosts reimagines the classic stories of yokai, yorei, and obake, all tainted with the common thread of food. Including stellar artists Sebastian Cabrol, Vanesa Del Rey, Francesco Francavilla, Irene Koh, Leo Manco, Alberto Ponticelli, Paul Pope, and Mateus Santolouco as well as amazing color by Jose Villarrubia, a drop-dead cover by Paul Pope. At the Mountains of Madness, I.N.J. Culbard (adapter), H.P. Lovecraft (author) H.P. Lovecraft was one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century. I.N.J. Culbard is an award-winning artist widely known for his graphic novel adaptations of the classics. He collaborated on a critically acclaimed Sherlock Holmes series with Ian Edginton and worked on The New Deadwardians for Vertigo, Dark Ages for Dark Horse, and Brass Sun for 2000AD. His first original graphic novel, Celeste, was nominated for the British Comic Award.
