As TNT zeroes in on record labels this season, it was only a matter of time until Thanh + Tim made their way to the legendary Dischord Records. And what better to showcase the label than one of the heaviest hitting albums in all of post-hardcore, the foundational 1990 release “Repeater” by a little band named Fugazi. Enjoy this one, you ice cream eating motherfuckers!
In celebration of the recently unearthed Out of Step Outtakes, we take a detailed look at the making of the original record. After Minor Threat formed in Washington D.C. in 1980, they began to find an audience in the American punk scene. Their first two seven-inch records contained songs written by Ian MacKaye, such as “Straight Edge” and “Out of Step,” which kickstarted the straight edge movement within punk. By 1982, guitarist Lyle Preslar had left for college and Minor Threat temporarily broke up. After speaking with H.R. of the Bad Brains, MacKaye was convinced of the impact the band was having and considered reforming. At that point, Preslar agreed to quit college and rejoin the band. Despite accusations of the band selling out by reforming, Minor Threat began playing shows in their hometown and embarked on a cross-country tour. Brian Baker decided to switch from bass to second guitar so they asked Steve Hansgen to join as the new bassist. In early 1983, they returned to Don Zientara's Inner Ear Studio to begin recording as a five-piece. Out of Step was eventually released in the spring of 1983. In this episode, Ian MacKaye describes this pivotal moment in the band's history when they decided to reunite and change their sound by adding a fifth member. Though they faced backlash about reuniting from their hometown crowd, this fueled the next batch of songs they would write as a band. MacKaye discusses how most of his lyrics on this record reflect the gossip and backstabbing that was prevalent in their scene at the time. In addition, tension within the band was rising over MacKaye's lyrics and their overall musical direction. The new version of the title track reflected their differences as Jeff Nelson convinced MacKaye to include a spoken word interlude that explained how the straight edge lyrics were personal to MacKaye and didn't represent the band's views. From Minor Threat's first 12-inch to a joke song about selling out to recording vocals live for the first time to the benefits of an expensive strobe tuner to hearing the call of punk to self-define, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
Sneaking into punk clubs, recording with Don Zientara in high school, working with a record label run by a woman, and the intersection of time, age, and notoriety are part of Hilary's conversation with guitarist and vocalist, Thalia Zedek. In 1986, Thalia's 3rd band, Uzi, released an EP on Homestead Records called “Sleep Asylum” which was later reissued by Gerard Cosloy on Matador Records in 1993. After Uzi broke up Thalia joined established noise rock band Live Skull on lead vocals and relocated to New York. She recorded 2 albums and an EP with them before returning to Boston and founding the band Come in 1991. Come released 4 albums and numerous EP's and singles on the Matador, Sub Pop, Domino, Glitterhouse and Placebo labels. Their full catalogue is currently being reissued on Fire Records. In 2001 Thalia started releasing solo records under her own name, first on Matador and Kimchee Records and then on the Thrill Jockey label where she continues as an active recording artist to this day. In addition to her solo work Thalia also records and performs with the Thalia Zedek Band and her newer band E, a trio that she started in 2013 with Jason Sanford of Neptune. She was also a member of the now defunct experimental group tK E has released 2 singles, a cassette, 3 LP's and an EP and are currently working on their 4th LP. Thalia continues to tour in the US and internationally with the Thalia Zedek Band and E, as well as the band Come, who reunited to tour in support of their recent reissues. Strap yourselves in, its time for a new episode and a new album to excavate and do the exegesis thing on. This episode my old friend, the deeply creative as well as deftly articulate Ken Smallwood, joins the show to discuss Friend to Friend In Endtime with me. As usual, it's a conversation with many twists and turns and an insightful unfolding of the song, in a direction I would not have anticipated. Afterward, the legendary and masterful recording engineer, Don Zientara, drops by to tell some great stories about his days recording the band. Enjoy.

This episode was a real treat for us. Don Zientara's importance as a producer cannot be overstated. He produced and engineered almost every single Dischord release. On this episode he talks about his philosophy of capturing a band's essence, tells a few funny stories from his early years and just generally really gives us a fly on the wall perspective into the Inner Ear control room.Listen all the way through, you won't regret it!
Joe Lally of Fugazi, Coriky, The Messthetics, Ataxia Joe Lally has played bass in Fugazi since the band’s inception in 1987. In 2003, the members of Fugazi decided to take an indefinite hiatus from recording and performing. Since that time, Joe has continued to write and perform solo material, accompanied by various musicians and friends.Joe has released three solo albums -- “There to Here” (2006), “Nothing is Underrated” (2007), and “Why Should I Get Used To It” (2011).Joe's albums are never really solo efforts; rather they feature collaborations with fellow musicians who use his bass-lines as an anchor. "There To Here", recorded at Dischord House and at Inner Ear Studio by Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara, features contributions from Jason Kourkounis (Hot Snakes), Jerry Busher (French Toast), Danny Frankel (KD Lang), Eddie Janney (Rites of Spring), Guy Picciotto (Fugazi), Ian MacKaye (The Evens, Fugazi), Amy Farina (The Evens), and Scott "Wino" Weinrich (Spirit Caravan, Hidden Hand)."Nothing Is Underrated", Joe's second album, was recorded in the summer of 2007, also at Dischord House and at Inner Ear Studio, and also with Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara. The album was mixed by Ian and Guy Picciotto and features contributions from Ben Azzara (Capitol City Dusters), Andy Gale (Haram), Eddie Janney (Rites of Spring), Sam Krulewitch and Ricardo Lagomasino (Capillary Action), Ian MacKaye (Fugazi), Devin Ocampo (Medications) and Guy Picciotto (Fugazi). For “Why Should I Get Used to It”, Joe settled in with a more traditional line-up featuring his current touring mates, guitarist Elisa Abela and drummer Emanuele Tomasi. The album was recorded in Rome, where Joe now lives with his family, and was released on Dischord in conjunction with Joe’s imprint, Tolotta Records. Coriky - "Clean Kill" from the 2020 album Coriky on Dischord Records. Combine the melodic energy of the Evens and the gruff bark of Fugazi and you've got Coriky, not surprisingly, 'cause they feature members of both those bands. The trio of guitarist Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, Evens), bassist Joe Lally (Fugazi), and drummer Amy Farina (Evens) played their first show in late 2018, at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church in Washington D.C., but hadn't officially released anything 'til now. Their self-titled debut was recorded last year by Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios, a name you've probably seen in the liner notes of most of your Dischord Records albums. Due to the coronavirus and the resulting closure of distributors and shops, they've postponed the release of the LP for now, but you can enjoy today's Song of the Day here. Ron Winters Jr. formed Branch Manager with Dave Allen on bass and Derrick Decker on drums in 1990. They went on to sign with Dischord Records and become the torchbearers for post-hardcore Reston. They released a self-titled debut in 1995 and Anything Tribal, their second and acclaimed final LP, recorded with the help of Ian Mackaye and Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios, in 1997. Winters discovered a talent for writing young as the son of a schoolteacher. When added to his newfound dexterity on guitar and inspiration from 70s rock radio and the suburban landscape around him, Winters started to write songs and never stopped. Winters began to play live with his high school band Toolin' for Bovine, but went on to play with other Restonites in Foundation, Blood Bats, and Sons of Disobedience. He has toured with the likes of NOFX and Fugazi, and Branch Manager have currently reformed and are playing live and recording another album. You can find their music at https://branchmanager.bandcamp.com/

Mike Davis learned guitar from his neighbor Steve Niles, who went on to play in Gray Matter, and formed his first band, Pudwak, with Sean Philpotts and Dave Allen, who later played in Branch Manager. They recorded one cassette album with Mike Clayberg from Malefice. They then added Davis White, also of Malefice and later Repercussion, on drums, renamed themselves Foundation, and recorded two albums with Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios. Mike went on to work at Inner Ear himself as an engineer and producer and helped record albums by Dismemberment Plan and the Goons among many others. Along the way, he helped connect Dag Nasty with their first vocalist and played with other members of the band in Los Vampiros. He also played in the eclectic NOVA band The Iceboxers and on albums by the Blood Bats, featuring Charles Bennington of Bloody Mannequin Orchestra. Suffice it to say, Mike helped establish what would come to be known as the Reston Hardcore scene and had a Zelig-like ability to cross over with virtually everybody making great music in Northern Virginia at that time. His guitar sound is an indelible part of numerous stellar records from the 80s and 90s as well as his recording techniques.

Bad Brains is an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington DC in 1977. They are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk. Bad Brains developed a fast and intense punk rock sound which came to be labeled "hardcore", and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. The unique factor of the band's music was the fact that they played more complex rhythms than other hardcore punk bands, also adapting non-punk style guitar riffs and solos into their songs. The Pilot Waves' Alex Vidales and Jason MacDonald sit down with Inner Ear Studios' Don Zientara who plays the Velvet Lounge on October 23rd . As a member of seminal hardcore punk bands The Teen Idles, Minor Threat and Fugazi, and a founder of the pioneering indie label, Dischord Records, Ian MacKaye started a musical movement out of Washington, D.C. in the early 80s that continues to ignite and inspire bands all over the world. With Dischord as its engine, the D.C. hardcore and post-hardcore punk scene generated bands like Rites of Spring, Nation of Ulysses, Jawbox, Shudder to Think, Fugazi, Q and Not You, Faraquet and Beauty Pill. The label and the bands, and MacKaye himself, came to stand for a DIY ethic about music distribution and recording before things like Pro Tools and Kickstarter made it easy to be DIY. This was also the scene that spawned our own InputOutput hosts, Eli Janney and Geoff Sanoff – they came up playing in and eventually recording bands out of D.C., looking up to MacKaye and engineers and producers like Don Zientara and Ted Nicely. On this episode of InputOutput, Geoff and Eli reconnect with MacKaye for an in-depth conversation about his life as a musician and a producer, what inspires him, his relationship with technology, his approach to production (John Frusciante, Bikini Kill and Rollins Band), and more. And this is only Part 1!
