We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we take a listen to all 3, as we move n' groove our way through funk-infused rock n' roll. This genre has a special meaning to the hosts, which is why it's tied for our longest-running series! I can still remember being in high school in the early 90s and having my mind blown by seeing the video for Fishbone's "Sunless Saturday" on MTV's 120 Minutes and going to my local record store (R.I.P., Twisted Disque on Jamaica Ave) to get their album The Reality of My Surroundings, and then walking around Queens with it blasting in my headphones, mesmerized by the way they melded genres like ska, funk, punk, metal and more. Fishbone is one of the bands that showed me what was possible, as far as breaking down both genre and racial barriers in music. SO! When I learned that Fishbone were getting ready to release their first full-length album in almost 20 years, their awesome new LP Stockholm Syndrome and that they would be doing interviews, I knew I had to make it happen. It was a blast connecting with Angelo Moore, who is the only permanent member of Fishbone — the only one who has been in the band for its entire 40 year history, while others have left or joined or left and re-joined — for the conversation in episode 125. We talked about his earliest experiences with creativity — he started out pop-locking and street dancing in Hollywood before he started playing music. He wanted to get a keyboard but his dad insisted on saxophone, and thus the seeds for Fishbone were planted. Angelo talks about meeting his bandmates in eighth grade and schlepping on the bus more than two hours each way from where he lived in the Valley to band practice in South Central LA, working up to their first show at Madame Wong's and eventually scoring a major label deal that turned out to be a mixed blessing. We also delve into the ups and downs of their career, what he remembers about early encounters with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys, and what inspired Fishbone's new album, which is a true return to form — the sound of a band that has never been afraid to be completely themselves, in all of their bright, brash, political, genre-melding glory. (You might start by listening to the Stockholm Syndrome single "Racist Piece of Shit" to get a sense of the album as a whole.) One caveat: You'll notice that the audio sounds a little rough. The band had just begun a run of dates on Less Than Jake's Summer Circus tour, and when Angelo joined our Zoom, he was on the road. Literally. He called while driving himself to soundcheck for a show in Florida. So it was a little more chaotic than the usual interview, with him attempting to navigate while answering my questions. You'll also hear him stop for a pee break, mid-interview, which was hilarious. Fishbone are on the road through late August and you can get tickets here.
Let's just take a minute to appreciate and savor the fact that Fishbone are still around and still doing what they do best. And if the band itself isn't a treasure, they've got a new record out this week. Stockholm Syndrome is classic Fishbone with a modern sound. Yes, it's that good. For tour dates and to get a copy of the record, check out the band's website.
Send us a textFor over four decades, Fishbone has stood as one of music's most defiant and visionary forces—a sonic volcano erupting with punk, ska, funk, soul, hard rock, and unflinching social commentary. Fronted by the electrifying Angelo Moore, the Los Angeles-bred band built its name on chaotic brilliance, truth-telling lyrics, and performances that blurred the line between concert and spiritual exorcism. Now, in 2025, Fishbone is not just looking back on its legacy—they're reclaiming it.On June 27, Fishbone releases its long-awaited ninth studio album, Stockholm Syndrome—the first full-length LP in over two decades. The album signals a bold new era: as raw, urgent, and rebellious as anything in their catalog, yet sharpened by decades of experience, reinvention, and refusal to fade away. The result is an album that roars with relevance. From beginning to end, Stockholm Syndrome is a whirlwind of infectious melody, urgent messaging, and unfiltered energy. Produced by Fishbone, Aryon Davis, and Chris McGrew, and mixed by Cameron Webb, the album even includes a bonus CD track provocatively titled “My God Is Better Than You're Gawd.” The message is clear: Fishbone is still challenging hypocrisy, still celebrating liberation, and still impossible to ignore. At the center of it all is Angelo Moore—a performer as magnetic as he is mercilessly honest. A saxophonist, vocalist, poet, and provocateur, Moore has long fused musical genius with social urgency. His onstage presence is unmatched: a shape-shifting force of acrobatics, soul revival, and punk sermon.“I don't just perform—I transform,” Moore declares. “My music isn't just entertainment—it's alchemy. It's liberation. It's the sound of someone who refuses to look away.”Fishbone will join Less Than Jake's Summer Circus Tour beginning June 7, bringing their legendary live chaos to cities across the U.S. They're also set to appear at Warped Tour 2025, with key stops in Long Beach and Washington, D.C., ready to school a new generation on what real genre disruption sounds like.Fishbone is not here for nostalgia. They're here to reignite.Stockholm Syndrome is both a battle cry and a celebration—music that provokes as much as it grooves, music that dances on the edge of collapse, only to burst into freedom. With Moore leading the charge, Fishbone is once again smashing the silence, exposing the rot, and proving that their voice—loud, lyrical, and utterly fearless—is more vital than ever.In the words of Dr. Madd Vibe himself:“I don't write controversy—I write truth. And the truth is uncomfortable when you're used to being lied to.”On June 27, the truth comes with horns, distortion, rhythm, and revolution. Fishbone is back. And they never left.http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. And if you want to experience that energy in person, don't miss Fishbone on the road this summer as part of Less Than Jake's 2025 Summer Circus tour. In this episode, Angelo Moore of Fishbone stops by to talk all about the writing, recording, release, and legacy of their iconic ska punk anthem “Party At Ground Zero.” Angelo shares how the song came together in a bedroom, blending the band's wide range of influences—blues, rockabilly, ska, and jazz—to create something totally unique. He and Chris dig into the song's dynamic structure, from its urgent riffs and catchy horn hooks to the powerful shifts that keep it exciting. Angelo also opens up about the apocalyptic lyrics and social commentary that make the track as meaningful as it is fun. With stories about the band's collaborative process, a shoutout to David Kahne's inventive production, and even some cartoon-inspired creativity, this episode gives an inside look at a song that still resonates with fans and musicians alike. Making this grant presentation from last year public now (with some minor edits) in anticipation of our world premiere next month at Amazing Fantasy Fest! Details are here: https://www.amazingfantasyfest.com and new trailer is here: https://youtu.be/pRheZpXsBpQ For the video version of this podcast episode, go HERE: https://youtu.be/w3m6ZF-TOpM On 12.27.23 (my birthday) I did a livestream update on the film via Zoom (while I was still in the clutches of the 'Rona - 1/10 do not recommend). I showed a couple completed clips from the film, and even the first trailer! All this stuff will be exclusive and for your eyes only until probably Spring 2024 (at least), so you're definitely getting an advance look behind the curtain! EDITS: I trimmed off the beginning part of the stream where we were waiting for folks to join the Zoom, as well as the last 2/3 of the musical number so that it's still a surprise at the upcoming screenings! Left the first verse until the big guitars come in though. Also the clips aren't fully foley-ed or mixed, etc. and the score is all temp stuff. Basically...the movie is pretty much done now, this was when it was still a work in progress. INBETWEENING stars Brandon Cole, Tye Blue, Debbie Rochon, Chelsea McCurdy, Jill Brumer, Dillon DeWitt, Seán Patrick Judge, and Angelo Moore (the frontman/singer/saxophonist of Black Rock pioneers Fishbone). Eric Linson is a struggling multiracial filmmaker with a few credits to his name and absolutely nothing to show for it. Inbetweening follows his journey trying to remain afloat and healthy in the liminal space between projects...while the voices in his head steadily become louder. Some are helpful, but most aren't...especially the Zombie Guy. Fortunately, the lead singer of Eric's favorite band (Angelo Moore, from the legendary Fishbone, playing himself) is on Eric's side. Inbetweening melds live action, animation, puppets, and even a musical number to reveal Eric's increasingly fractured journey. This particular work is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

Does rapper/podcaster Open Mike Eagle like ska? Well, when I brought up Fishbone, he immediately said that he loved the song "Unyielding Conditioning." Great! Now that that's out of the way, this week, we talk about a whole lot of other topics with the great OME including AJJ, They Might Be Giants, MF Doom, Adventure Time, and he has a fantastic Angelo Moore story! With AJJ specifically, we discuss what it's like to tour with the group, how he exercises on the road, and Adam even forces him to choose between Sean and Ben! We also go deep into OME's all-time favorite band They Might Be Giants, and discuss every moment he's referenced their music in his own songs. And he tells us about what it was like to be a judge on the "I Left My Body" video contest. Plus, we determine whether "Boss Of Me" is a ska song or NOT! We cover a range of other topics, including his long friendship with Hannibal Buress (And how Hannibal once beat him at a rap battle contest), The Pixies, famous people he's mentioned in his songs (Peter Dinklage, Marc Maron, Joe Rogan, Jon Lovitz) and whether they're aware that they were mentioned. And Tim Robinson's show I Think You Should Leave gets brought up--of course. Adam even makes OME choose a favorite sketch!Plus we finally decide once and for all if punching nazis is a good or bad thing (hint: It's good) Support the show

Born in Buffalo NY, his father wore two hats as pianist and conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He would seat Dave in the orchestra pit during performances as early as seven years old. Dave's brother Robert would soon become a multiple Grammy-nominated classical percussionist, and his sister an accomplished rock/soul singer. Shortly after his father's passing when Dave was 10, he suddenly took an interest in the piano that was sitting idly in the living room. Osmosis? Within six months Dave had mastered the C Sonata by Mozart, and began an obsession with XTC, Herbie Hancock, Yes, Todd Rundgren and of course, DEVO. Pretty diverse for an 11 year old. He clearly made the right choice. By the age of 17, he was one of the top keyboardists in his hometown, winning multiple awards consistently for seven years. Finally the big break came, when Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls called and left a simple message from sunny LA: “you wanna come out and tour with us for a year?” In a matter of one day Dave went from playing in front of 300 in a local Buffalo bar to playing Woodstock in front of 65000. This led to a two-and-a-half year relationship with the Goo Goo Dolls that took Dave around the world twice as touring keyboardist/vocalist for the “Dizzy Up The Girl” tour, the landmark album that spawned five top ten singles between 98 and 2000. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a lively conversation between two guys from different generations and geographical backgrounds, but some similar stories and experiences: Titus and Angelo Moore. Angelo Moore is the legendary frontman of the legendary punk-funk-ska-soul-etc. band Fishbone, which has been a frequently mutating unit since 1979. Fishbone were peers and friends with a who's-who of that era's Los Angeles scene, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, and plenty of others, and they've been a huge influence on innumerable bands over the years. It hasn't been the straightest journey, and there's a pretty great documentary about the band that came out about 10 years ago called Everyday Sunshine. In addition to fronting the band, which still plays shows worldwide, Moore has embarked on tons of other projects over the years, releasing music as both Dr. Madd Vibe and with a group he calls the Brand New Step. Beyond that, he's been touring as a vocalist with a David Bowie tribute tour that's led by Todd Rundgren and Adrian Belew. Titus, aka Randolph Newman, was a fan of Fishbone's—no surprise for a guy who loves to blend genres, and who's a person of color in a scene that isn't known for a ton of diversity. Though they're from different generations, they share some life experience, having grown up Black in largely white areas—and having ended up playing Warped Tour, though years apart. Titus' music is less a stew than Fishbone's: His two most prominent ingredients are pop-punk and hip-hop, with nods to titans of those genres like Taking Back Sunday and Lil' Wayne. His latest release is an EP called Damned if I Do, and he also recently released a cover of Kate Bush's Stranger Things-bolstered track “Running Up That Hill,” which is covered in this chat. Check out “Saddest Song” from Damned If I Do right here. Moore and Titus talk about their experiences on Warped Tour, their experiences growing up as outsiders, and drugs. Titus talks about the recent loss of his mother, which has understandably had a profound impact on him, and Moore talks about his days trying to kick some ass in the mosh pit. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Angelo Moore and Titus for chatting. FISHBONE BOTTOM LOUNGE Saturday September 3 As music fans, our relationship with Fishbone has outlasted most of our personal and in some cases, familial relationships. From that first EP in 1985 through countless, life affirming, get up and move live shows, including some amazing album plays here in Chicago at Riot Fest, Fishbone's been an essential band through the decades. They'll be back in Chicago Labor Day weekend for a show at Bottom Lounge on Saturday, September 3…. Joining me on Car Con Carne is Fishbone's Lead singer/sax player/theremin player ANGELO MOORE. Discussed in this episode: How's everybody in Fishbone getting along? Fishbone's main stage role on the first Lollapalooza tour. How Fishbone learned they lost their major label record deal. The troubles with the music industry. Fallout from the Will Smith “slap.” Is it vindicating to be an influence on some of the biggest alt bands of the past 30 years? Why aren't more artists speaking their mind? WIll there be new Fishbone music in the future? Angelo's various non-Fishbone projects Chicago loves Fishbone. Now is the time to go solar! Earlier this week, I did this "sneak peek" of the movie via Zoom - it was part of the grant finalization process. I recorded it, so here's the audio! I play rough cuts from a few scenes I've edited thus far, plus a early sneak peek (listen) to "S**tshow", the song from the musical number in the film. INBETWEENING stars Brandon Cole, Tye Blue, Debbie Rochon, Chelsea McCurdy, Jill Brumer, Dillon DeWitt, Seán Patrick Judge, and Angelo Moore (the frontman/singer/saxophonist of Black Rock pioneers Fishbone). We completed principal photography in March 2022, and are in post production right now! Join me for a WORK IN PROGRESS sneak peek at some of the footage and animation as well as discussion of some of the underlying themes/origins of the stories within!
In this episode of Ear and Loathing, your hosts Aaron, Damon and George (The Gitmo Bros) talk about Angelo Moore's wardrobe acuity, the best way to befuddle Ray Romano, los burros y las chicas, and American embarrassment John Wayne. In the Torture Chamber segment, George and Damon compete for meaningless points by making Aaron listen to his most hated songs. Will Aaron survive the Torture Chamber long enough to share one of his favorite songs? Tune in and find out! Songs featured in this episode: "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" (Paula Cole), "Unchained" (Van Halen), "Blaze of Glory" (Jon Bon Jovi)
There's so much more to the Ween world than just Ween, and this episode is the first in a new series about all the various Ween side gigs and solo projects. To kick things off, we're diving deep into Claude Coleman's solo project Amandla. Claude got his start in music as a teenager back in the 80's with a band called Skunk, and has played in a myriad of bands and projects, most famously as the drummer for Ween, but also in Eagles of Death Metal, Chocolate Genius, with Angelo Moore in Brand New Step, just to name a few. His drumming skills are near mythical, but what many don't realize is that Claude is a multi-instrumentalist, and is nearly as comfortable on a guitar or bass as he is on his kit. He also is one helluva songwriter, and this is where this episode comes in! You see, Claude also has his own solo project, Amandla, where he literally IS the band. For Amandla, Claude does it all, with just a smattering of help from various musicians. For this episode, we talk about how Amandla got started, with songs written as far back as the late 80's, to the “formation” of the band in ‘99, when Claude finally got access to a quality studio, as well as the impact his accident had on his solo work. We then talk about each of his three solo albums, Falling Along (2001), Full Catastrophe (2006), and the more recent Laughing Hearts (2018). Yes, there's been some time between each one, but Claude puts a lot of work into Amandla, and the results are definitely worth listening to! I don't want to say too much here because you really should listen to the episode! Enjoy! PS: We did a lot of research for this episode, and didn't come up with all this shit on our own. “There's nothing that will stop white people from trying to do some black shit. It's fundamentally baked into every aspect of American popular culture. It is the first thing that we invented that was entirely ours — white people dressing as black people and entertaining other people.” — Wesley Morris Wesley Morris (@Wesley_Morris) the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic at large for the New York Times. Since their formation in 1979, Fishbone's kinetic, funky mixture of rock and ska has remained a singular sound, not least because of Angelo Moore and company's blend of social commentary and clever humor that, thirty years on, seems more incisive than ever. Still vibrant, still relevant, and still stuck in your throat, the Los Angeles group performs four songs from their catalog on the Afternoon Show.
