Rites of Spring (originally named Rite of Spring) is an annual spring semester music festival held at Rhodes. These days, the events usually happen over two or three days: the first day has games and parties and the second day has the main headlining performer and other opening acts. All kinds of artists have visited our beautiful campus for Rites of Spring, with some key examples being Three Six Mafia, The Black Keys, and Waka Flocka. It all started in the 1970s. Back in the good old days when rotary phones and Third Term were still a thing and when Rhodes was called Southwestern. Music was everywhere with genres like jazz, disco, soul, county and reggae blasting on radios across the country. Lynx to the Past host Kahlila Bandele '27 is joined by Randy Robertson '76 and Neil Mara '77 to record the origin of this beloved campus tradition.

This week we're discussing the short discography of Rites of Spring. Credited (along with Embrace) with helping to create emo-core, Rites of Spring went wild during their brief existence. They played only a few shows—destroying all their equipment in the process—but their influence remains today. Back in November, 2021, Dark Discussions Podcast reviewed the film OPEN 24 HOURS (2020) in https://www.darkdiscussions.com/podcasts/dark-discussions-podcast/dark-discussions-podcast-episode-463-open-24-hours-2020/ (Episode 463 of the podcast).  The film was written, edited, and directed by Padraig Reynolds, known for the fantastic sleeper film from 2011, RITES OF SPRING.  Unbeknown to your co-hosts, his collaboration with award winning composer Holly Amber Church has gone back a decade. Padraig Reynolds, director and writer, made some buzz with his 2011 horror film RITES OF SPRING, his feature length debut.  Some call it that year's hidden gem as it was well received by many horror fans yet missed by almost as many.  His follow up, 2016's THE DEVIL'S DOLLS, was reasonably received by critics.  Now in 2020 his latest, OPEN 24 HOURS, has gained a bit of buzz. A young woman recently released from the penitentiary finds a job working at a rural quickie-mart in rural Mississippi.  During the night shift, she receives a strange call that leaves her concerned for her safety.  As the night moves forward, her own criminal history begins to haunt her.  And soon the lives of her, her friend, and her customers may all be in danger. Not your typical slasher film, OPEN 24 HOURS adds a few new twists to the subgenre.  Such things as the unreliable narrator, extreme coincidence, and reversal of the revenge-trope make their presence.  But does the film also bring the strengths of what horror films are known for such as a great villain, suspense, and scares?  Dark Discussions takes a look at this little movie and gives their thoughts.
