**Content Warning! This movie deals extensively with self harm in a very dismissive, lighthearted way. It was made in 2006, that was kind of everywhere at the time, sadly. If that is not something you want to listen to, please skip this episode! Emma & Katie talk about the 2006 romantic comedy, and also The mid-2000s! Emo culture! Eastern European tax shelter filmmaking! High school pretensions! Gogol Bordello! Failed Fox tv shows! Katie mispronounces "Shea Wigham" a lot! Note: We DID discuss Sossamon before, in The Holiday, of course!
We talk the NCAA national championship games for men's and women's basketball on the latest Jagbags. Plus we talk the start of the MLB season, NBA playoff preview, Robert Christgau's review of Gogol Bordello's album Super Taranta, and Greil Marcus' latest book on Bob Dylan. Plus Len tears up the dance clubs of Chicagoland with "Mr. Washing Machine", talks a little Rosanne Cash, and Nile Rodgers' latest interview in Spin Magazine. It's a true grab bag of a recap episode -- tune in!
It's a double feature this week as Matt & Alex talk about the first two episodes of Creature Commandos on MAX and the first three episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew on Disney+. Matt wants Star Wars to abandon all future plans and fully commit to exploring space werewolf pirates, Alex feels like the Creature Commandos should collect all the classic Universal monsters, and they're both ready to go to a Gogol Bordello show. There's no one quite like Gogol Bordello. The band has cultivated a wildly joyful mix of Romani and Ukrainian music, crossed with punk, polka and any other genre that might suitable serve the chaos. Eugene Hütz stands in the eye of the storm, as frontman and ringleader. Growing up in Ukraine studying English language punk and folk, Hütz and family would move across the content to Poland, Hungary, Austria and Italy as political refugees. In the early-90s, the band settled in the U.S. By the end of the decade, Gogol Bordello began in earnest in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

No other band sounds like Gogol Bordello. Frontman Eugene Hütz has crafted a caustic blend of styles that meld his affection for punk with the Romani music from his native Ukraine. Gogol Bordello released its ninth studio album, Solidartine, in 2022. This year, Hütz launched a new label, Casa Gogol Records, with a collaboration with New Order's Bernard Sumner, "Solidarity," and put out a track to benefit Ukraine, "United Strike Back," featuring Tre Cool (Green Day), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Joe Lally (Fugazi) and Roger Miret (Agnostic Front). This month we're back in our current millenium with our favourite songs of 2005 including generous helpings of indie-rock, chamberpop, industrial, synthpop, prog-metal & hiphop. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Brendan Benson, The Bravery, Bright Eyes, Broken Social Scene, Clutch, Death Cab For Cutie, Editors, The Fall, Ben Folds, Gogol Bordello, Gojira, Imogen Heap, Malcolm Middleton, Nine Black Alps, Nine Inch Nails, Jim Noir, Opeth, Pernice Brothers, Porcupine Tree, Robyn, Shady Bard, The Spinto Band, Sufjan Stevens, Strapping Young Lad, Matt Sweeney & Bonny Prince Billy, Teenage Fanclub, VNV Nation, The Wedding Present, & Kanye West Ft Jay-Z. In 2011, long time Southern California ska trumpet player Eitan Avineri had an idea. He wanted to blend traditional Jamaican ska with big band jazz. He assembled a crew of all the best players in LA's traditional ska scene, as well as some of his jazz friends, and re-arranged his favorite Skatalites tunes in a big band style. He called the project Western Standard Time Orchestra. And their first album was called Big Band Tribute To The Skatalites (Vol 1)Though Eitan would later discover that he wasn't the first person to form a ska orchestra, Western Standard Time Orchestra would be a particularly vibrant band, steeped in ska and jazz in equal measures. Now over a decade into the band's existence, they have a brand new Christmas record that releases on November 3rd. To talk about it, we bring on Eitan and Aggrolites' vocalist Jesse Wagner, who sings lead vocals on the record. We discuss, at length, LA's trad ska scene and its various players that helped give birth to this cool project. And we talk about how WST tour, record and function as a massive 15-30 piece band. We also talk about the various LA trad ska bands that built the foundation the group grew from: Jump With Joey, Mobtown, Yeska, Hepcat, The Allentons, Kingston 10, See Spot, Ocean 11, Rhythm Function and others. We also talk about the role of Steady Beat Records and Chris Murray's Bluebeat Lounge. Also, skinhead fights, Christmas music, how Jesse can croon so well without making it sound cheesy, and we learn that Gogol Bordello has been using LA trad ska drummers in the group for the past decade! Plus we discover that Jesse Wagner used to be a child/teenage actor! Support the show

We had the pleasure of interviewing Gorgol Bordello over Zoom video!International punk band Gogol Bordello & friends, led by Ukrainian frontman Eugene Hütz, release a collaborative single for charity, “United Strike Back.” Out on Hütz's own label, Casa Gogol, the track features punk & hardcore heavy hitters like Tre Cool (Green Day), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Joe Lally (Fugazi, The Messthetics), Roger Miret (Agnostic Front), Monte Pittman (Ministry), Sasha (Kazka) and Puzzled Panther. Hütz shares “Here, living legends of punk and hardcore who always meant so much to me, come together to show their much needed support for Ukrainian freedom fighters.” The powerful punk anthem fights back against imperialism and dictatorship, with a unifying cry of “That's the way united people strike back. That's the way your palace crumbles, that's the way the house of cards tumbles, that's the way the dictator's story ends, as we stand with brothers, sisters, lovers and friends.”All proceeds will go to Kind Deeds to help wounded Ukrainian defenders regain mobility with prosthetics. The release precedes Gogol Bordello's EU & US Summer Tour (stopping at The Atlantis on August 5).The band recently performed for Rolling Stone, The Recording Academy's Global Spin and WNYC's Soundcheck, with Ukrainian frontman Eugene Hütz continuing to be a “flagbearer of the cultural resistance…as the one-year mark of the war in Ukraine approaches” (CBC Radio's The Sunday Magazine).ABOUT GOGOL BORDELLOSince 1999, International punk band Gogol Bordello, led by Ukrainian frontman Eugene Hütz, has been filling up rooms with an energy that could run a whole city. Their latest album Solidaritine is no exception, going back to their hardcore roots: "With a Fugazi cover, Social Distortion references, and an appearance from H.R. of Bad Brains, Gogol Bordello's mission is well-studied and seemingly endorsed by icons of the genre," Consequence declares. The band has lit up stages around the world alongside System of a Down, Primus, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, dueted with Regina Spektor, and cut albums with legends Rick Rubin and Steve Albini. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Ukrainian-born artist, songwriter, and frontman of International punk band Gogol Bordello, Eugene Hütz. Hütz is a rare musical force, raucously illuminating stages alongside System of a Down, Rancid, and Dropkick Murphys, dueting with Regina Spektor, and cutting albums with Rick Rubin & Steve Albini. A lifelong lover of the punk scene growing up in Ukraine, Hütz found himself where he felt he belonged, in New York's Lower East Side in the late 90s, where he went to shows and later performed at the legendary CBGB. Crashing at friends' apartments and playing acoustic sets in NYC Ukrainian bars, his group, Gogol Bordello, steadily grew to an 8 piece multicultural band, combining Eastern, Western and Latin traditions. Hütz is a tireless advocate for Ukrainian solidarity, partnering with Nova Ukraine and ArtDopomoga, as well as putting together benefits with Patti Smith, The Hold Steady, Suzanne Vega, Magnetic Fields, Matisyahu and more. Hütz has also appeared in arthouse films such as Liev Schreiber's Everything Is Illuminated with Elijah Wood, Filth and Wisdom helmed by Madonna and the documentary Gogol Bordello Non-Stop. On June 13th, a new documentary about Gogol Bordello, entitled Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. An intimate, career-spanning portrait of punk legend Eugene Hütz, Scream of My Blood chronicles Hütz's childhood journey to the U.S., his rise to fame with Gogol Bordello, and his defiant return to Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Through never-before-seen photo and video archives spanning two decades — including concert performances, backstage moments, and intimate interviews — Scream of My Blood follows the epic journey of Hütz as he uses music as a rallying cry for the cultural identity of Ukraine while it continues its fight for sovereignty. Born in Ukraine to a family with Romani roots, Hütz fled his homeland during the Chernobyl disaster. Now, after years of exercising demons through his music, he journeyed home to face down the biggest demon of all. A wild punk-rock-doc that explodes off the screen, Scream of My Blood is a testament to the power of speaking your truth, no matter the cost. In this episode host Michael Shields and Eugene Hütz discuss what fans can expect from the new Gogol Bordello documentary and how the career-spanning look into the band found within Scream of My Blood came to life. They converse about Hütz's early days in New York City and the band's remarkable rise to prominence while exploring the bands that inspired Hütz's unique sound, what Hütz thinks about the war in Ukraine and his recent visit to the front lines, wild stories of life on the road, and so much more. The song which closes the podcast, entitled “United Strike Back” is a Gogol Bordello collaborative charity Song For Ukrainian soldiers featuring Tre Cool (Green Day), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Joe Lally (Fugazi, The Messthetics), Roger Miret (Agnostic Front), Monte Pittman (Ministry), Sasha (Kazka) & Puzzled Panther. You may have noticed a distinct lack of social media stuff and episodes being put out in the last few months. I got quite sick during almost the whole of March and into May after working hard professionally as well as on the High Frequency EP and the shows to support its release. I'd like to thank Ant and Corky for coming on the last episode to talk about the history of our band and the recording of our new EP ‘Some Songs You May Have Heard… But Not Like This!' which I hope you've listened to and enjoyed. I'd also like to thank the handful of listeners who checked in on me while I was away, I really appreciate it. I'm OK now and looking forward to getting back to work on the podcast. The band has lit up stages around the world alongside System of a Down, Primus, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, dueted with Regina Spektor, appeared in films like Liev Schreiber's Everything Is Illuminated with Elijah Wood and Filth and Wisdom helmed by Madonna, cutting albums with legends Rick Rubin and Steve Albini. The 8-piece multicultural gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello is based here in New York, but its founder, the vocalist, songwriter and all-around ringleader Eugene Hutz, was born in Ukraine. At the best of times, Gogol Bordello wants you to dance, and party, but also to think. Now, for Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora, these are not the best of times, so Gogol Bordello still wants you to dance and party and think, but also to act. Hutz and company have done several benefit shows, and he even did a secret show for the troops at the front line last summer. I had to take a couple weeks off so I could focus on some other projects that were on deadline, so I apologize for that. It's for really good reasons and I explain in the intro to the show so don't skip it! I'm so glad to be back to A Dirtbag's Guide and speaking with folks about their path to the now. This week I've got a really dope episode. Boris Pelekh who's played guitar with all kind of bands, styles and gigs stops by (digitally) and we have a great chat. I don't want to give too much away but this dude is a road warrior. He's been touring pretty much since the day he graduated college and done so many really cool things so give it a listen and be sure to give Boris a follow on Instagram so you can catch him when he's on tour all over the world playing his original tunes or when he's playing guitar for Gogol Bordello. Thanks Boris for the time and the chat! If you'd like to support our show directly please head on over to www.patreon.com/charlesellsworth. Over the course of the past 24 years, Gogol Bordello has become a hardcore gypsy punk and global party music institution, rooted here in New York, but with an international orientation. The group — which infuses Eastern European folk and Romani melodies with punk energy, Latin inflections, touches of dub and polka — is known for its live shows in particular. In our conversation today frontman Eugene Hütz calls a typical Gogol Bordello show “relentlessly hardcore celebratory.” We discuss how the band came to be, and Ukrainian-born Hütz's own incredible life story. Gogol Bordello plays a mix of different genres (Punk, Romani folk, Latin rock, polka), though hints of ska can be found all over their songs. Frontman Eugene Hütz calls it "ska without doing ska" and says he almost doesn't think about the ska elements since he sees ska as so closely linked to punk music. But on Gogol Bordello's latest album, Solidaritine, the ska elements are more overt than ever before. The reason: their new drummer Korey "Kingston" Horn has an impressive ska resume (Aggrolites, Tim Armstrong, See Spot, Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra, Rhythm Doctors) and we all know that the heart of ska is in those drum beats. Today we talk to the legend, Eugene Hutz about Gogol Bordello's relationship with ska. We also talk a lot about Ukraine--Eugene is a Ukrainian political refugee and has done much to support them against Russia's attack, including playing a recent secret show for Ukrainian troops at an undisclosed location. We also talk about his childhood growing up in Kyiv and going to super DIY punk shows and trading tapes with other local punks. Some favorites include Dead Kennedys, Devo, The Selecter, P.I.L., Bad Manners, Murphy's Law, The Specials, G.B.H.On this episode, we also talk about the immigrant experience that often comes up in Gogol Bordello's lyrics. It is often the product of necessity through displacement or economics. Eugene has talked at length about the idea of worldwide citizenship, so he squares this ideal with the global issue of anti-immigrant sentiments that have increased in recent years. Of course, we talk a lot about interesting music too including Sonic youth, Mano Negra, Russkaja, Cuatro Pesos de Propina and The Specials.
