Los Angeles-based composer Jeff Kryka has been awarded by Turner Classic Movies, ASCAP, the RMALA, and the Henry Mancini Foundation. As both a composer and orchestrator, his work has been featured in major motion pictures, TV-shows, video games, and heard in concert halls across the globe. Jeff studied music composition at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (B.M. 2006) and at the University of California-Los Angeles (M.A. 2008 & Ph.D. 2011). He has taught music theory, ear training, and composition at UCLA and the Colburn Conservatory of Music. In addition to his own composition work, he has collaborated with composers Michael Giacchino, Laura Karpman, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alex Lacamoire, Nathan Johnson, Chris Tilton, Nami Melumad, Erran Baron Cohen, Morgan Kibby, James S. Levine, & Paul Chihara. Episode 5: Writing & Producing Music. Today we speak with the other mind behind In Process: Freddy Avis, a sharp, futuristic musician for the 21st Century. Based in Highland Park, Los Angeles, Freddy got his start working under acclaimed composer James S. Levine (Glee, American Horror Story, Bloodline, Nip Tuck, The Last Ship) for two years at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions in Santa Monica, CA. Since then Freddy holds music credits on hit shows including Major Crimes, Instinct, Star, & Chambers, as well as countless placements on Tiger King, Shark Tank, Dateline, & The Dr. Oz Show. He’s also contributed synth & percussion work on James Newton Howard’s scores for Walt Disney features Jungle Cruise and Raya and the Last Dragon. But even more enticing is Freddy's electronic alter ego, Arswain, under which he composes dark, inspiring, and profoundly eco-conscious music for our time. 2020 has seen the release of his debut album, Partitioning, as well as several music videos for the project.Freddy holds a pair of Bachelor's degrees in Music and Political Science from Stanford University. Spielberg, Katzenberg, Geffen. Cuando uno observa detenidamente el logo de la compañía Dreamworks puede observar como las iniciales SKG forman parte de él. Tres apellidos provenientes de diferentes ámbitos del espectáculo (cine, animación y música) que fueron responsables del nacimiento en el año 1994 de un nuevo estudio cinematográfico, Dreamworks, llamado a hacer sombra a las grandes compañías que lideraban el cine norteamericano desde años atrás. En 1997, Dreamworks estrenó su primera película, El Pacificador, un thriller de acción protagonizado por George Clooney y Nicole Kidman y apenas un año después, su primer título animado, Hormigaz. El cine animación fue una de las grandes apuestas creativas de la nueva compañía (por empeño y cierto ánimo revanchista por parte de Jeffrey Katzenberg) y pronto se convirtió en uno de los valores diferenciales del estudio, capaz de establecerse como una fuerte competidora de Disney o Pixar. Títulos como "El príncipe de Egipto", "Shrek" o "Chiken Run" hicieron temblar el casi monopolio animado de la casa que vio nacer a Mickey Mouse. A día de hoy, Dreamworks Animation es una garantía de entretenimiento animado tras una carrera que aunque llena de altibajos ha gozado de éxitos suficientes ("Shrek" y sus secuelas, "Madagascar", "Como entrenar a tu dragón", "Kung Fu Panda") como para labrarse un nombre dentro del género de animación. Composer James S. Levine takes some time to talk about his background and how he found his path to film music. He talks about his early days working with Hans Zimmer and learning the ropes through that path. James reflects on his scores for American Horror Story and Glee, and discusses his evolving collaboration with showrunner Ryan Murphy dating all the way back to Nip/Tuck. James talks about working on the first 3 seasons of American Horror Story, and how he treats each one as its own thing. We chat about his work on Glee where he reveals his love for musical theater, and how he and the crew felt like they were back in high school making that show. James also mentions his current shows that are keeping him busy like The Last Ship (co-composed with James Dooley) and Rizzoli & Isles.
