Plus, Geoff talks about his path from music school to being an intern at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions in the early (Lion King era) 1990s, sitting in on Alan Meyerson mixes, and getting his first opportunities while working for John Powell on the movie Face/Off.

With the season 3 premiere right around the corner, we've decided to drop an interview to tease your appetite. Dominic Lewis joins The Film Scorer to talk about his new score to the hit action film Bullet Train. Dom's score is a self-described concept album featuring numerous, far-reaching influences and a number of faux needle drops that completely fooled me when I watched the film. Dom also briefly talks about his two upcoming Christmas films (including Spirited, a musical starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds) and how to make Christmas music that doesn't sound like every other Christmas score. Finally, Dom ends the interview by talking about his time working at (and giving a rare peak behind the scenes into) Remote Control Productions, Hans Zimmer's film scoring production company. As I mention during the interview, hearing Dom's score is what sold me on the interview. It's such a wild genre mix that somehow works, ending up even more weird and gonzo than the underlying film. It's always exciting when composers try to push the boundaries a bit, and even more so when they can do it in an otherwise mainstream release. Bullet Train is available to watch in theaters. Dom's score, and all of his other music, is available digitally.
My guest today is Freddy Avis aka Arswain a composer, producer, and solo artist in the indie/electronic band Arswain in Los Angeles, CA. Freddy holds a pair of Bachelor's degrees in Music and Political Science from Stanford University, where he also pitched for the baseball team. Sorry for the delay on this episode. I got a promotion at work, live shows are returning, and I have been quite overwhelmed. Rest assured, the podcast is still happening. I just needed to catch up on the things which pay money in order to get around to putting together the next few episodes. So, after much delay, here's our episode on composer Max Aruj. Up and coming Los Angeles based composer Max Aruj had two exciting projects release on June 25: the crime drama Lansky from Vertical Entertainment, profiling legendary gangster Meyer Lansky, and the Liam Neeson-starring action-thriller The Ice Road from Netflix. The composer got his start in the industry working at the widely known film music hub Remote Control Productions in Santa Monica, CA where he's worked closely with composer Lorne Balfe on numerous projects, including Ad Astra, Black Widow, and HBO's His Dark Materials. Max first collaborated with Lansky writer-director Eytan Rockaway on the psychological thriller The Abandoned. Their established working relationship allowed them to delve even deeper creatively this time around. The film takes place in two time periods: Lansky in his earlier years and him looking back at his life in the '80s. To reflect this, Max utilized some '80s Vangelis colors as the musical palette, mixed with orchestra. He wanted to create both a sense of darkness and sentimentality to capture both sides of such a complicated figure. The composer also leaned into his Jewish roots by including Jewish colors in the music to reflect Lansky's identity. For The Ice Road, Max collaborated with director Jonathan Hensleigh and his goal was to really play into the classic action tropes and create a next level, bombastic score. Having an archetypal character (led by the iconic Liam Neeson), allowed Max to really dig into the storyline. Once Max had the thematic tapestry nailed down, the rest of the music flowed out. I spoke by phone with Max Aruj about these two films, their differences, and his career.
Hot on the heels of our Hans Zimmer Appreciation Special comes this piece of shit. Join the boys as they welcome back Andrew "The Fifth Beatle" Young to discuss this incredibly boring failure of a blockbuster and its score by the gang at Remote Control Productions.

As president and CEO of Bleeding Fingers Music and Extreme Music, Russell Emanuel is a trailblazing leader, innovator, and producer in the music industry. Bleeding Fingers is one of the leading producers of quality-crafted film and television scores in the world, bolstered by a unique creative association and business partnership with industry legend, Hans Zimmer, and his long-term business partner, Steve Kofsky. Russell’s vision for Bleeding Fingers led to a thriving collaboration with David Attenborough and BBC on the music for Planet Earth II – a score that contributed to the series’ record-breaking viewership, international acclaim, and BAFTA and Emmy nominations for Bleeding Fingers’ work. This paved the way to his most recent project - producing the score for the highly-anticipated BBC One natural history landmark, Blue Planet II, which premieres later this year. Alongside his work producing the series’ orchestral score, Russell creatively produced a track for the prequel, titled “(ocean) bloom,” featuring a collaboration with Radiohead, one of the world’s most acclaimed rock bands, and Hans Zimmer. Under Russell’s leadership, Bleeding Fingers has amassed an expert crew of over a dozen in-house composers leading to an unmatched balance of musical creativity, collaboration and efficiency. Bleeding Fingers’ music has strengthened countless projects, with their prolific and diverse output including scores featuring sweeping orchestral pieces, industrial rock and electronic sounds, Americana, and everything in between. Operating out of their twenty-studio Santa Monica facility on the same campus as Remote Control Productions, the company is producing carefully-tailored scores for some of the most acclaimed series on television. In addition to Planet Earth II and Blue Planet II, Bleeding Fingers’ musical efforts include Netflix’s Roman Empire, Amazon’s American Playboy, and Crackle’s Snatch. Before creating Bleeding Fingers, Russell had already made a name for himself as a titan within the composing industry, thanks to the tremendous success of Extreme Music, which he co-founded in 1997. Extreme Music was conceived as a business that would provide production music for projects that did not have access their own composers, while retaining incredibly high standards of passion and quality. The company soon became famous, not only for the music it offered, but also for the notorious punk energy and marketing that Russell channeled through the company (most famously, he sent condoms to numerous industry professionals, printed with the massage “the only safe thing you will ever get from us”). Russell grew the company to such a large success that it was purchased by SonyATV in 2008 for $110 million with Emanuel still remaining as the active CEO. Russell is not only an entrepreneur, but an experienced musician within his own right. For many years, he was a session musician, producer and manager, most notably managing The Jam and Stiff Little Fingers. He’s also collaborated with musical heavy-hitters such as George Martin, Snoop Dogg, Rodney Jerkins, and Quincy Jones, and spent an early stint of his career engineering at Abbey Road Studios. Russell currently lives in Los Angeles. When not working, he likes to perform with his twisted pop-hit cover band "Courtesy Flush,” ride his Harley Davidson and serve as a chauffeur and entertainment officer to his wife and five children.

Score: The Podcast welcomes Ramin Djawadi, award-winning composer of Game of Thrones, Westworld, Prison Break, Person of Interest, Amazon's upcoming Jack Ryan series, Iron Man, Pacific Rim and A Wrinkle In Time. Robert and Kenny begin the show discussing AmperMusic.com and the new "computer learned" composing tools Silicon Valley is funding, as well as the retro 80s-inspired soundtrack of Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One. Ramin talks about the boom of interest in film scores and specifically his international Game of Thrones tour and its many spectacles accompanying the orchestral performances. Kenny and Robert ask Ramin about whether he gets special access to top-secret storylines in Game of Thrones, and how he tips off audiences to what may or may not happen next through the type of music he uses in the show. Ramin talks about meeting Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt and their invitation to him to join Remote Control Productions in Santa Monica. Score: The Podcast debuts "The Inside Track," a new music psychology segment featuring Dr. Siu-Lan Tan, a leading researcher into the effects of film music on audiences. In this first edition, Dr. Tan examines the use of music to signal "the end" of a scene or of a film, and how a composer can create audience satisfaction with examples of The Matrix, Inception and more. Then they jump into Westworld (returning Sunday, April 22) and discover how his musical expertise informs other creative aspects of the show, including the opening theme and the player piano. Lastly, Ramin joins the guys to play a Hans Zimmer-themed edition of the game “Name That Score,” where you — yes, you — can be a winner! You'd be forgiven for thinking that the music for Ron Howard's film Rush, the 12 Monkeys TV series, and video game Medal of Honour, were all composed by different people. But composer and musician Bryce Jacobs has found a way to stand out from the crowd, through diversifying not only his compositions and playing, but also his mentality about it all. From engineering his own 7 octave guitar, to working for Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions, it's a podcast ramble of epic proportions when Bryce joins me in the chat cave.

On this week's show, our very own Batman, Ross returns to the co-host chair, to chat about all the latest tv, film and gaming news, and we have a great interview for you with the brilliant composer Bryce Jacobs. Bryce is an Australian-born composer, and it would be fair to say, he’s an eclectic musician! He's worked across all sorts of genres in tv, film and gaming, including comedies, documentary and drama. He’s composed songs, written scores & orchestration, and worked as a session and touring musician for Australian artists including Josh Pyke and Genevieve Maynard, and international artists such as Sophie B. Hawkins. However, it was in film & tv composing he really discovered his passion. Moving to LA, he joined Hans Zimmer's legendary Remote Control Productions. There he worked on working closely with Grammy and Emmy Nominated composer Ramin Djawadi, and contributed to tv, film and games such as ‘Clash of the Titans’, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides', ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, ‘Rush’, ‘Man Of Steel’, ‘Prison Break’, ‘12 Monkeys’, ‘Medal of Honor’ and ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’. His dedication to film music led to the development of a guitar of his own design - a guitar that was based on the range and capabilities of a piano, which became a new and exciting platform to write and perform any style of music on. His most recent work has seen him composing the score for upcoming film ‘Random Tropical Paradise’, and you can find out more about him and his work at www.brycejacobs.com. Also On This Week's Show: Ross is back as the co-host, so we catch up with the tv shows, films & games we've been watching & playing, including 'The Crown', 'Colony', the return of 'Zoo', 'Crash Bandicoot' and 'Fallout 4'. Estelle Woodward Arnal (Director of Artist Services, Dance Theater Workshop) and Levi Gonzalez (dancer-choreographer) join me today to talk about DTW's Outer/Space Creative Residency Program. Levi Gonzalez is an independent choreographer living and working in New York City who has created a body of solo and group choreographic projects. He is interested in presenting work in a variety of venues and contexts, from small and intimate spaces to more traditional stages. Often the placement of the work in a certain environment shapes the content. Gonzalez is interested in furthering a dialogue of ideas about the body in society-at-large and about how we experience physical presence. He has gradually distanced himself from dance that concerns itself with the abstract designing of movement as an end in itself and towards work that addresses performance and the power and meaning of embodiment in daily life. His work and his choreographic collaborations with Luciana Achugar have been presented by Movement Research at Judson Church, Dance Theater Workshop, The Kitchen, Danspace Project, PS122, Dixon Place, and PS1 Contemporary Art Center. He has performed extensively with Donna Uchizono Company and John Jasperse Company, as well as ChameckiLerner, Jeremy Nelson and Dennis O’Connor. Additionally, he has worked for Michael Laub’s Remote Control Productions in Europe. Levi teaches technique and composition at Movement Research and with Dean Moss at The Kitchen. He was a Movement Research Artist in Residence from 2003-2004 and a 2006 NYFA Fellow in Choreography. He is an editor of Critical Correspondence, an online publication, and facilitates artist dialogues through Dance Theater Workshop’s Fresh Tracks Residency.
