Shonica Gooden (Hamilton Broadway's Woman 4) was born and raised in Atlanta, where she focused on what was supposed to be a thriving modern dance career. She had zero interest in musical theatre and didn't see herself as a triple threat. Luckily, her teachers at DanceMakers of Atlanta did see her as a triple threat and strongly encouraged Shonica to audition for Bring It On. This led to callbacks and work sessions with Alex Lacamoire and Andy Blankenbuehler, and it would prove to be the start of a beautiful friendship with The Cabinet. Shonica had the incredibly unique experience working with Andy Blankenbuehler in the pre-production phase of Hamilton, and she was one of the dancers Andy called to help him visualize what would end up being the choreography in the show. It was a shock to everyone (especially Andy) when Shonica turned down the opportunity to be a swing when Hamilton was transferring to Broadway. As Shonica explains, it was a terrifying decision that ended up being the right move. Plus, Shonica talks about being a mother on Broadway including not feeling guilty about having a child, what needs to change in the industry, refusing to make excuses, and teaching her son that being busy is normal because she's not giving up her career anytime soon. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week Vidar is reviewing Lin-Manuel Miranda's multi award-winning cultural phenomenon that is Hamilton as the 2023/2024 touring production visited the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre with description by Professional Audio Describers Julia Grundy and Jonathan Nash. About Hamilton: Hamilton is the story of America's Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the very foundations of the America we know today. The score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway – the story of America then, as told by America now. Hamilton has book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is directed by Thomas Kail, with choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire and is based on Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton. Winner of 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, 7 Olivier Awards, the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album. Philip, Jodi, and Alex review 'Vivo' from Columbia and Sony Pictures Animation, released in the U.S. on Netflix in August 2021. Directed by Kirk DiMicco and co-directed by Brandon Jeffords, this Cuba/Florida travelogue is the brainchild of Lin-Manuel Miranda, who first pitched the idea of a singing monkey--or kinkajou--back in 2010, following the Broadway success of 'In the Heights.' Miranda voices Vivo as well as composes along with long-time collaborator Alex Lacamoire. Vivo is the companion of elderly street musician Andrés, who is unable to travel to Florida to rekindle an old flame. Vivo makes the journey along with Andrés' great niece, Gabi, in order to deliver a piece of music representing the bond that survived the many years of being apart. Hamilton is a landmark Broadway production of remarkable scope, now streaming into your home on Disney+. In producing the film version, the show’s creative team sought to give the audience “the best seat in the house,” and in this podcast we talk with original Broadway team artists Alex Lacamoire and Nevin Steinberg along with the film’s sound team Tony Volante, Roberto Fernandez, and Dan Timmons about a number of Hamilton topics, including the challenges of designing a custom sound system for the historic Richard Rodgers Theatre, translating the live show into a cinematic world, and how Dolby Atmos played a key part in giving the audience at home the transformative theatrical experience. We also review clips and discuss in detail the numbers “Alexander Hamilton,” “Satisfied,” and “The Room Where It Happens.”
Robert and Kenny begin the show discussing what they watched over the weekend including Doctor Sleep, score by The Newton Brothers and Ford v Ferrari, score by Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders Then, Emmy, Grammy and Tony-winning music director Alex Lacamoire stops by to help count down the release of Hamilton coming to Disney+ on July 3. Alex shares stories of working on the show, his reaction to the script when Lin-Manuel Miranda first presented it and his future projects including In The Heights. Later, Oscar-nominated and 6x Grammy-winning composer Terence Blanchard joins the show revealing how he began working with iconic director Spike Lee, how their relationship has evolved after 30 years of collaborating, the importance of growing up in a musical city like New Orleans and how he almost got kicked out of a Knicks game while sitting courtside with Spike. A toast to the groom! To the bride! To knowing you'll always regret the sacrifice you made for your sister! In this updated 2019 episode, Kirk takes a dive into Lin-Manuel Miranda's epic Broadway musical Hamilton, focusing on Renée Elise Goldsberry's first act showstopper, "Satisfied." Regret tinges an otherwise joyous day as Angelica Schuyler remembers the night she met Alexander Hamilton, fell in love with him, and quickly realized they could never be together. It's a heady mix of complex rhyme schemes, powerhouse vocals, and musical character motifs so densely interwoven that it's hard to keep track of them all. (Note: This is an updated version of an episode that originally ran on May 1, 2019. It includes a new intro and outro, a couple of small editing tweaks, the show's current theme music, a new aside about Angelica's introduction to Alexander, and some added mentions of Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton's fabulous musical director.) Alex Lacamoire is the award-winning orchestrator, arranger and conductor for the hit musical Hamilton. This hip hop homage to the revolutionary US statesman Alexander Hamilton - which was created by Lin-Manuel Miranda - has become one of the most successful musicals of all time. But Alex has his own story to tell. He's the son of Cuban immigrants, and although he's now one of the world's most celebrated composers, as a child he was diagnosed with a hearing impairment. It was even suggested he go to a school for deaf children. But his mother was determined he would stay in mainstream school. And despite his hearing challenges, his passion and talent for music grew. Alex first encountered Lin-Manuel Miranda back when he was a lyricist and rapper trying to create his first professional show. They joined forces. Lin would dream up the songs, and Alex would work out how the music would sound. And the chemistry between them would form part of the magic behind the development of Hamilton. As we prepare to celebrate America's July 4th Independence Day holiday tomorrow, it's fitting that theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins us today with her review of a little musical that's rolled into Baltimore that tells the story of one of the nation's most celebrated Founding Fathers. The touring production of Hamilton -- the multiple Tony Award-winning musical that was created and launched on Broadway in 2015 by Lin-Manuel Miranda -- opened June 25th at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre. Miranda's hit show, a sung-and-rapped-through musical bio of Alexander Hamilton that earned the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, was inspired by Ron Chernow's best-selling 2004 biography, Alexander Hamilton. This touring production of Hamilton is the third to traverse the U.S. since the musical's debut. Its cast at the Hippodrome includes Edred Utomi in the title role, Hannah Cruz as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, and Josh Tower as Aaron Burr. The musical is directed by Thomas Kail, with choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and music supervision and orchestration by Alex Lacamoire.Hamilton continues at the Hippodrome until Sunday, July 21st. Patrick Vassel, Hamilton's Associate & Supervising Director, is back this week to talk moving from The Public to Broadway, the joy and misery of tech, and how The Cabinet (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, Alex Lacamoire, and Andy Blankenbuehler) established and continue to keep an extraordinary amount of trust among eeryone working on the show. Oh! And PDV raps cut lyrics from two songs, with explicit permission from Lin-Manuel, who texted us during the recording. It's episode 50! :::drops a funky beat::: How does a local, theater-loving, son of a teacher and a musician grow up to be an #Ableton Programmer and an orchestrator? Well, apparently by accident. Scott Wasserman stumbled into learning the Ableton system while working on a small project called #Hamilton. But he worked REALLY REALLY hard to get that lucky break, and has worked with some of #Broadway's most iconic figures, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alex Lacamoire, and Alan Menken. Scott is also the co-host of one of my favorite #podcasts, Song Salad, with his long time friend, lyricist Shannon Deep. Scott recently put up his first full orchestration of an original musical with "Austen's Pride" which is running through April 14. Visit ACT of CT for ticket information. You can see what else Scott has been up to at scott-wasserman.com - including #DearEvanHansen and #TheGreatComet. #musicaltheater #orchestration #ableton #songsalad #keepcreating
Hi guys! Welcome back to Geeking Out Loud! On our twenty-seventh episode of Season 2, Maria talks about the last Hamildrop, One Last Time (44 Remix) #YesWereAllCrying. The single came out in December 21, 2018, and it marks the ending of the Hamildrop series. The song features OG Hamilton’s Christopher Jackson, a super gospel production by BeBe Winans and Alex Lacamoire, and the biggest surprise of all… former president Barack Obama. Let’s talk about what it means to Lin-Manuel Miranda to have One Last Time (44 remix) as the final single from the Hamildrop series, what it means for former president Obama, and what it means to us! Oh, also… Let’s see how this track did on the charts! Okay, enough! Let’s start chatting, shall we? Song: Ikson - Heartbeat (Vlog No Copyright Music) Music promoted by Vlog No Copyright Music. Kurt Crowley, Hamilton Broadway's music director, kicks of 2019 with three mindblowing episodes. In this first episode Kurt pulls back the curtain on the #SNOB tradition (Saturday Night on Broadway), tells stories from the earliest days of Hamilton, goes in on his friendship/working relationship with Alex Lacamoire, and plays tons of motifs and musical gems because OF COURSE I MADE SURE THE KEYBOARD WAS PRESENT!
Welllllll it happened! After countless requests from listeners, my parents Attilio and Barbara Pensavalle are on the pod! We talk about how they recently (finally!) saw Hamilton, their thoughts on the podcast, and lots of love for Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tommy Kail, and Alex Lacamoire. Mike joins us (with a great cocktail) and the pups Pete and Alfie were in the room as well. Enjoy!
Wallace Smith is back for round two and this week we take a deep dive into Wallace's audition story (and how Lin-Manuel Miranda speCIFICALLY REQUESTED THE YORKTOWN RAP AHHHH) and the Madison/Jefferson dynamic. We also sing the praises of so many Hamilton peeps including James Monroe Iglehart, Tommy Kail, Alex Lacamoire, Chris Lee, Paul Tazewell, Karen Olivo, and more!
Between ensuring Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen's global tours are as magnetic off-Broadway as they are on it, to scoring feature films, musical maestro Alex Lacamoire’s schedule is relentless. The 43-year-old Cuban-American hasn't stopped making music since he began dazzling audiences at piano recitals at age four. But much like Alexander Hamilton, Lacamoire struggled. The prolific polymath reveals to Catie Lazarus how he grapples with his own hearing impairment to the harsh reality of breaking into Hollywood, even as a Grammy, Tony, Olivier and Employee of the Month winner. Plus, The Resistance Revival Chorus explains why joy is an act of resistance. Want a second or third jolt of joy? In Alex Lacamoire's third episode Alex talks about how electronic sounds are used in Hamilton, why the orchestrations of It's Quiet Uptown destroy us every single time we listen to it, more musical themes, and finally... we do Barbershop Beastie Boys. Alex Lacamoire is back to blow our minds once again which is crazy because I'm still not over last week's episode. This week we dive into Lin-Manuel Miranda's favorite arrangements and how Alex came to make them: Yorktown (YAASSSS!!!), Wait For It (SRSLY YOU'RE NOT READY), One Last Time ("f@%k you strings!"), and That Would Be Enough (Alex brought something that even Lin hasn't heard yet - yes, there were tears). Oh! AND! Alex plays an exclusive track you can't hear anywhere else called "Hamilton Finale Idea" and while neither Alex, LMM, nor Thomas Kail remember exactly what it was for I can promise you that your world will never be the same. Sir Alex Lacamoire is here! For THREE EPISODES! Get ready, you guys, your minds are about to be blown. Mike joins me for #JuLac and Alex was kind enough to bring an electric piano and play us ALL THE THINGS. In this first episode, Alex tells us all about The Schuyler Sisters, the song that went through the most changes. But he doesn't just tell us... he brought all the demos so we get to HEAR the evolution of the song. We also play a little game I like to call "In the style of..." and Alex plays his favorite Hamilton song in the style of Billy Joel, Rush, Fiona Apple, and Tori Amos. This episode is packed. That's Thomas as in KAIL. YES! TOMMY. KAIL. CAME. OVER. It was super fun and we are naturally at 1.5x speed. Tommy tells me all about the upcoming Hamilton exhibition in Chicago, opening this November, and how the job of a director changes (or doesn't) as a production evolves. We bond over It's a Wonderful Life, Tommy reminds cast members who are alums of The Hamilcast that he *does* hear the stories they tell, I teach him the correct names of Hamilton songs, and Tommy confirms that he is not in fact Alex Lacamoire. OR IS HE??? He's not, you guys, they just both have really fantastic hair. Have I mentioned that Hamilton and In The Heights director and all around excellent human Thomas Kail hung out with me for a few hours? Because it still feels ridiculous. It's Thursday, and that means our theater critic, J. Wynn Rousuck, joins us with her review of a little musical you might have heard of: Hamilton. The popular show, now on stage at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., uses rap, hip-hop, R----B, and a variety of other musical styles to tell the story of the American Revolution through the lens of one its most charismatic and ill-fated architects.Winner of 11 Tony Awards and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama (among other honors), the musical by playwright, actor and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspired by Ron Chernow's best-selling 2005 biography of the founder, Alexander Hamilton. Miranda's three-hour-long musical rendition premiered on Broadway in August 2015.Featuring 46 songs and a racially and ethnically diverse cast, Hamilton recounts the story of Alexander Hamilton (played by Austin Scott), his rise to power as the new nation's first Treasury Secretary, his contentious relations with his fellow Founding Fathers, and their dramatic struggle to craft a new, independent government for the United States of America. The version of Miranda's show that has finally reached the Washington area premiered in San Francisco and is one of five off-Broadway versions of Hamilton currently being performed across the U.S. and Britain. The show is directed at the Kennedy Center by Thomas Kail, with music supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire and choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler.Hamilton continues at the The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC through September 16th.
Robert Walters, a swing in Hamilton on Broadway, is here to drink Robitos (aka mojitos) and tell me about how a boy from Oz made it to Broadway! We talk his Australian roots, work visa woes, his crazy Hamilton audition story, his origins with Hamilton in Chicago, how in love he is with his wife Jen (it's adorable, you guys), and that time he told Alex Lacamoire to piss off. SPOILER: it all ends well, fam! And over the course of his two episodes, Rob and I decide that we were most likely separated at birth. Trailer for Bootmen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u33VTEapd04
Nick and Dom discuss Brief Encounter now playing at the Empire Cinema in the West End, and Nick chats to Hamilton’s orchestrator, arranger, music supervisor and all-round music guy - Alex Lacamoire.
Part 1 takes us all the way back to 2008 when Lin-Manuel Miranda picked up Ron Chernow's book for the first time and, as Lin says, heard hip hop songs rising off the pages. From there, Lin begins work on a concept album called The Hamilton Mixtape. After a fateful performance of the Mixtape, the wheels are set in motion to develop the album into an off-Broadway musical in partnership with The Public Theater. As the off-Broadway production approached opening night, the creative team knew the work was good, but as The Public Theater's Oskar Eustis says, anybody who says they knew what Hamilton would become is lying. Ian Weinberger is back for another episode and you should probably be sitting down while you listen to this one... we turn our attention to the keyboard and YOU. ARE. NOT. READY. Ian plays us mind-blowing musical motifs from Hamilton, and we come to that conclusion that Alex Lacamoire really just can't help himself when it comes to being a genius. In other words, #LacsGonnaLac. We also do impressions of characters from The West Wing because of course we do.
Ian Weinberger, the Associate Musical Director of Hamilton on Broadway, is going to BLOW US ALL AWAY. Ian conducts the show, plays keyboard in the pit, and happens to be one of the nicest people on the planet. In this first episode, Ian tells us how he got involved in Hamilton (Dear Evan Hansen is involved), confirms that Alex Lacamoire and Kurt Crowley are as nice as they are brilliant, and explains the musician's version of #BurrsCorner. Oh, did I mention there's a keyboard involved? Thank you Gregory Treco for telling me to get a keyboard for this recording and thank you Tyler Mount for making that happen.
Annnnnnnnd, we're back! Season two brings you eight brand new episodes that find out how some of your favorite shows developed from an idea to a full Broadway production. Booth One welcomes Mary Jo DuPrey, who recently visited Chicago from Los Angeles for some meetings about possible directing projects. Mary Jo trained as an actress at Vassar. She then worked with her sister Katie Agresta, a legendary vocal coach, managing her "rock & roll vocal studio" on the upper west side, where she also learned how to teach singing with Katie's amazingly effective approach and exercises. Check out this list of notable students! Mary Jo then moved to L.A. where she had a successful acting career. She also taught acting and singing in UCLA's musical theatre program, and tells us about how she came to be such a sought-after vocal coach for spoken and singing voices. She tells great stories about working with her clients, including how she got connected with Daveed Diggs through their mutual friend and collaborator, composer and sound designer Jonathan Snipes. Mary Jo worked closely with Daveed while Hamilton was being developed. Read his description of working with her here. Don't miss her spellbinding story about being invited by Alex Lacamoire to Hamilton's first music stand read! She made two bold predictions that day that came true. Mary Jo gives Gary a short voice lesson and offers to work with him via Skype! She is a master at her craft and approaches the voice in a totally holistic manner. Interested in scheduling some lessons? Contact her here. Mary Jo is the only certified West Coast teacher of the Katie Agresta Vocal Technique. She cites Patsy Rodenberg, Head of Voice for the Royal National Theatre as another major influence. Mary Jo recently got an MFA in Directing at UCLA and is loving directing there and at professional theaters in L.A., such as the beautiful outdoor repertory theater in Topanga Canyon, the Theatricum Botanicum. She directed our friend and recurring guest co-host Paul Stroili in August: Osage County and he thinks the world of her. Without a doubt music is what I’ve always wanted to do, music is what I feel like I was born to do, it’s what I feel like I do best, it fills me, fulfills me, it fuels me. I’m super excited about today’s guest, Alex Lacamoire. My girlfriend Stacy London and I have been on the Hamilton journey for a while now. I’m not really a Broadway person, but if you haven’t heard this musical, it’s time to take a listen. It is revolutionizing the way we learn about history, and it’s revolutionizing the genre of musical theater. Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards this year, and Alex won one of those. He is the orchestrator and musical director of the show, and he is a brilliant creative who works alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda. In this episode we learn about Alex’s creative process, how he got into music, his struggle with hearing loss. One of my favorite things about talking to Alex is his amazing positive energy and outlook on life, and we talk about that has helped get him where he is today and helped mold his creative career. Not hearing “no” for an answer makes me feel as if what it is that I dream of and what it is that I desire is possible. By Mike Keefe-Feldman November 5, 2013 The musical theater program at Berklee has recently been expanding exponentially, and one of the driving forces behind that expansion is Berklee Voice Department instructor Rene Pfister, who directs many of Berklee’s musical theater productions. This semester, those productions include the Halloween spectacular BPC Screams!, the hit musical Footloose, and a Berklee Goes Broadway cabaret, among others. In addition, musical theater students recently staged a crowd-pleasing flash mob performance at the Prudential Center. Many Berklee students have gone on to successful careers in musical theater. Alex Lacamoire, a 1995 alumnus, has won a Tony Award for the Broadway musical In the Heights, and 2010 graduate Giancarlo de Trizio has been a touring percussionist with the company of the smash musical The Book of Mormon, to cite a few examples. However, Pfister, who is also a Berklee alumnus, demonstrates that an education in musical theater opens up career paths beyond the “Broadway or bust” track. In addition to his work at Berklee, Pfister is the founder of a successful business, Make Your Life a Musical. In this innovative model, Pfister and colleagues solicit input from clients to put together original, personalized musicals for special occasions such as family reunions.
