Min 4.

[School of Everything Else 2025] All the way back in 2017 I put together an absolutely EPIC musical journey through the first eight years of the MCU, from Iron Man all the way up to Doctor Strange. So much time has passed since then (cue many gifs of Matt Damon drinking from the wrong Grail) and Marvel has not followed my sound advice about allowing each hero (and maybe a villain or two) to retain a theme that reprises with every subsequent appearance. However, that does not mean there haven't been some truly excellent scores composed, which got side-lined in the clickbaity rush to pronounce Marvel as being formulaic, failing or indeed signifying the baleful death of film. Here for you now is a compendium of themes and sonic explorations as Phase 3 draws to its epic conclusion and Phases 4 and 5 wend their way from the small screen to the big and back again. I look forward to a third volume of these shows sometime in the early 2030s, when the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Secret Wars and whatever happens with Spider-Man and whatever inevitable soft reboot brings us to a new era of superhero cinema. 1. Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're celebrating “Dreddruary,” where we cover movies based on the British comic book character, Judge Dredd! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Sylvester Stallone's misguided 1995 schlockfest, Judge Dredd!Recycled food! Bedazzled codpieces! Distracting lifts! A cool, creepy cyborg! A shockingly sneaky, giant robot! Lethal holograms! Futuristic court drama! Stylish garbs of justice designed by Gianni Versace! A strong score by Predator's Alan Silvestri and cinematography by Aliens' Adrian Biddle! An original song from The Cure! A surprisingly faithful comic adaptation in every way except for the lead character! A visual treat with incredible production design, animatronics, and visual effects, including one of the greatest fictional mega cities in cinema! A solid cast that includes James Remar (briefly), Armand Assante, Max von Sydow, Diane Lane, Rob Schneider unfortunately, and Sylvester Stallone's ego derailing the movie! Dark themes of police corruption and eugenics in this silly movie that maybe works better as a disappointing sequel to Demolition Man, from a frustrated director who loved both the source material and apparently Blade Runner! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Captain America: Brave New World, Oz Perkins' new horror comedy, The Monkey, and the final nail in the Sonyverse coffin, Kraven the Hunter! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Min 5: AÚN ESTOY AQUI ¿LA TAPADA DE LOS OSCAR? CALIFICACIÓN EDC: 4 estrellas Min 13: THE MONKEY. Six-time Grammy winner, Academy Award nominee, and Songwriters Hall of Famer Glen Ballard joins us to talk about his work with Michael Jackson, Alanis Morrisette, Dave Matthews, and many others!PART ONEPaul and Scott talk about the awesomeness that is Omnivore Recordings, dig into the Fire Aid concert, and talk about their '90s music geekery. PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Glen BallardABOUT GLEN BALLARDFollowing an entry-level job at Elton John's Rocket Records in Los Angeles, Glen Ballard began his creative career as a staff songwriter for MCA Music Publishing. Early singles included George Strait's “You Look So Good in Love” and Jack Wagner's major hit “All I Need,” which Glen also produced. In the mid-1980s he went to work for Quincy Jones, an era when he and Siedah Garrett co-wrote Michael Jackson's triple platinum single “Man in the Mirror.” By the dawn of the 1990s, Glen had begun collaborating with Wilson Phillips, co-writing their chart topping hits “Hold On” and “You're in Love.” He went on to produce and co-write all the songs on Alanis Morissette's debut album, Jagged Little Pill, including “You Oughta Know,” “Hand in My Pocket,” “All I Really Want,” “Ironic,” “You Learn,” and “Head Over Feet.” The project earned the Album of the Year Grammy, and Glen returned to produce and co-write Alannis's sophomore release, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, including the hit “Thank U.” Other songs from the Glen Ballard songbook include Aerosmith's “Pink” and “Falling in Love is Hard on the Knees,” as well as the Dave Matthews Band's “I Did It” and “The Space Between.” Glen earned a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for “Believe,” which he co-wrote with Alan Silvestri for the film The Polar Express. He has written and produced songs for Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Ringo Starr, Van Halen, Chaka Khan, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, and many others. In recent years, Glen has found major success in musical theater, including writing original lyrics and music for GHOST the musical, and teaming again with Alan Silvestri to write the score for the musical adaptation of Back to the Future. Glen has won six Grammy awards, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023.
Director Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead & Spider-Man trilogies) just seemed born to apply his skills to a send-up of a spaghetti western and back in the mid '90's he got his chance. You've got Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct) at the PEAK of her star-power playing the strong-but-silent type, a gunslinger coming to the town of Redemption seeking revenge and getting roped into a gun-duel tournament....Hackman taking his Oscar-winning thug sheriff role from Unforgiven up to 11 as the main villain....journeyman players like Lance Henricksen, Keith David, Pat Hingle, and Tobin Bell all having a blast. PLUS you have a truly baby-faced Leo DiCaprio and youthful-looking Russell Crowe (in his American film debut) both bringing the heat with interesting supporting characters who form different types of bonds with Stone's protagonist. What results is a high-energy genre hybrid which was a flop on initial release but has since built up a cult following as it now approaches it's thirtieth anniversary. MAJESTICA, the symphonic and power metal band from Sweden, is set to embark on an exciting new journey with their upcoming album Power Train, scheduled for release on February 7, 2025. This spellbinding experience awakens sleeping dreams with powerful riffs and epic choruses in singles such as Power Train, Battle Cry, and A Story in the Night. Back in 2019, MAJESTICA made a significant impact in the metal community with their debut album, Above The Sky. This album showcased their signature blend of soaring melodies and powerful instrumentation, quickly gaining acclaim and amassing over 17 million streams. It established them as prominent players in the power metal scene, setting high expectations for their future work.In 2020 then, the band delighted fans with a unique release: a Christmas musical power metal album titled A Christmas Carol. This project beautifully intertwines the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge with their symphonic power metal style, drawing inspiration from artists like RHAPSODY and film composers such as Alan Silvestri and Danny Elfman. The album not only highlighted their musical versatility but also offered listeners a captivating retelling of the beloved story, complete with orchestral elements and theatrical storytelling.Combining the contrasting styles of those last two releases, Power Train sees Majestica at their explosive best, a swirling cavalcade of guitars laying a sonic landscape filled with grandeur and strength.HEAVY sat down with guitarist/vocals Tommy Johansson to dissect Power Train more."The album goes up and down," he explained. "We have a couple of fast songs like you would expect from a power metal band inspired by Helloween, but it also has a couple of heavier songs inspired by Hammerfall, and then we have some 80's songs - there's very much an 80's style to it - and then we have more mid-tempo songs… There's at least one song that anyone could like, depending on what kind of song you're into."In the full interview, Tommy discussed the single selection process, the themes coursing through Power Train's DNA, the vivid cover and how it represents the album, handling production duties in-house and the benefits and disadvantages of doing so, how Majestica have grown musically over their career, stamping their authority in the power metal scene and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

¿Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks, Robin Wright y Alan Silvestri? ¡Escuchad y opinad, Amig@s! Chef's do that. Welcome to Thor's newest (and dumbest named) month "Thor's BM". It is the most stressful time of the year for many of us and we are distracting ourselves with some action films from the 15 years before The Matrix set the new standard for the genre. Topics we reference include 962: A League of their Own and 1004: Predator. Next week's BM pick is Rumble in the Bronx (1995).
Welcome to the Holiday Season. We're here with what has become the Gartbage's annual holiday tradition: a Shane Black film set at Christmastime. This year, it's Black-penned but Renny Harlin-directed THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT from 1996!Our gift this year is getting to respectfully discuss Geena Davis' biceps, our favourite Samuel L Jackson performances, their amazing chemistry, and Brian Cox's proclivity for aiding amnesiacs. In addition to how we feel about the specific subgenres to which this belongs--spy coming out of retirement & misanthropic buddy action comedy--we also get pretty nerdy about Alan Silvestri's soundtracks.Plus, Erin has a holiday trivia segment for Nick! Will he remember enough about Shane Black's filmography & amnesia-based films to win? Listen to find out!NEXT TIME: our second holiday episode on Satoshi Kon's most normal film: 2003's TOKYO GODFATHERS.

It's been a long run but the podcasting police finally caught up to us for our many crimes and are forcing us on hiatus. This may not be the end of the podcast formally, but we are putting this on the backburner for the near future as Joel moves into a new career and Naomi...does more surfing or something. We chat about All credit to Disney for use of part of the Avengers Endgame Portals theme. Hey, this is crazy and completely unintentional, but Joel discovered that his favorite track from Lilo and Stitch and that Avengers theme were both composed (or at least credited to) Alan Silvestri of Disney fame. Is Joel's taste in movies more shallow than he would like? Probably? Are they good, emotionally poignant tracks? Definitely. The Ketsa theme we've been using doesn't really portray endings well - Joel thinks Daft Punk's Touch is actually a far better song to go out on but wanted to avoid copyright strikes. As part of our "theme," we start off by summarizing the illustrious career of film composer Alan Silvestri (including playing a pitch-perfect interview of his by BMI Music). Which of his movie themes is more catchy: Predator or Back to the Future? Outside of Robert Zemeckis, which comedy/western/scifi filmmakers has he collaborated with a ton? All that and which awards he's been gracious enough to win! Throughout the illustrious career of Oscar-winning director James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar), this remains his ONLY film which can be considered a financial failure. It was his very much his first "blank check" project following the mega one-two punch of The Terminator and Aliens which were his previous two films. Like those two beloved hits, he was once again crafting a sci-fi thriller but this time around.....this particular story didn't take place on land nor in space. THIS harrowing action thriller - about a marooned deep sea-drilling team lead by the estranged couple of Bud (Ed Harris) and Lindsey (Mary Elizabeth) who all find themselves marooned more than two miles under the surface of the Pacific Ocean - takes place almost entirely underwater but beyond that, more than 60% of the production was filmed UNDER water. For Cameron, this was not only his first big budget production but he was attempting to film extensive underwater sequences on a scale never done before. As a result, the troubled shoot not only went well beyond its planned production schedule but also significantly over budget. Many cast and crew were miserable, often submerged under water for longer periods than they were comfortable - fortunately no lives were lost but a couple came close. In the middle of a record-breaking summer at the box office lead by the likes of Batman or Indiana Jones, this film opened to middling reviews and disappointing box office. It ended up winning an Oscar for Best Visual Effects and its legacy eventually grew as one of Cameron's most personal films. So now thirty-five years after it was first released, the time has come to revisit.....The Abyss. Playlist;(sintonía) ALAN SILVESTRI “I’m Forrest… Forrest Gump”ELVIS PRESLEY “Hound dog”CLARENCE “FROGMAN” HENRY “(I don’t know why) but I do”THE ROOFTOP SINGERS “Walk right in”WILSON PICKETT “Land of 1000 dances”CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL “Fortunate son”THE FOUR TOPS “I can’t help myself”THE BEACH BOYS “Sloop John B”THE MAMA’S and THE PAPAS “California dreaming”BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD “For what it’s worth”THE DOORS “Breaking through (to the other side)”SIMON and GARFUNKEL “Mrs Robinson”JEFFERSON AIRPLANE “Volunteers”SCOTT McKENZIE “San Francisco (we sure to wear some flowers in your hair)”THE BYRDS “Turn turn turn (to everything there is a season)”THE SUPREMES “Stoned love”B.J. Dana and Tom with returning guest, Sarah Duncan (@thenomadicarchaeologist) and new guest, Joe Boukhari (Instagram and Letterboxd Film Commentator - I'll Get to It When I Get to It and @bagodonuts) discuss the polarizing Best Picture winner for 1994, Forrest Gump: directed by Robert Zemeckis, written by Eric Roth, music by Alan Silvestri, starring Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, and Sally Field.Plot Summary: In Robert Zemeckis' "Forrest Gump," we follow the extraordinary journey of a seemingly ordinary man through decades of American history. Tom Hanks delivers a career-defining performance as Forrest, a man with a pure heart and limited IQ, whose life intertwines with pivotal moments from the 1950s to the 1980s.The film is a nostalgic reflection on the turbulent events that shaped a nation, viewed through Forrest's innocent eyes. From his childhood leg braces to becoming a college football star, Forrest's life unfolds in unexpected ways, guided by his unwavering optimism and an accidental knack for being in the right place at the right time.At its core, "Forrest Gump" is a tale of resilience and the enduring power of love and friendship. Supported by a stellar cast including Robin Wright and Gary Sinise, Zemeckis weaves together a narrative that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit amidst chaos and uncertainty. With its iconic quotes, memorable soundtrack, and poignant storytelling, "Forrest Gump" stands as a testament to the enduring charm of cinema that captures the essence of American life with humor, heart, and a touch of magic.Chapters:00:00 Opening Title Card00:00 Introduction02:32 Our Newest Guest - Joe Boukhari09:30 Forrest Gump - Background, Cast, and Recognition14:14 Our Relationship(s) to Forrest Gump22:03 What is Forrest Gump about?28:22 Why did Forrest Gump connect with America?29:15 Criticism(s) of Forrest Gump39:08 Plot Summary40:49 Did You Know?44:00 First Break44:43 Where to Find Our Guests49:47 Ask Dana Anything54:57 Best Performance(s)01:19:24 Best Scene(s)01:33:50 Second Break01:34:48 In Memoriam01:36:08 Remembering Donald Sutherland01:44:06 Best/Funniest Lines01:48:29 The Stanley Rubric: Legacy01:54:29 The Stanley Rubric: Impact/Significance01:59:17 The Stanley Rubric: Novelty02:05:53 The Stanley Rubric: Classicness02:12:53 The Stanley Rubric: Rewatchability02:15:47 The Stanley Rubric: Audience Score and Total Score02:17:15 Remaining Questions02:18:31 New Chapter02:24:28 Thank You to our Guests02:30:20 CreditsYou can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com//post/forrest-gump-1994-ft-sarah-duncan-and-joe-boukhariFor the entire rankings list so far, go to:Full Graded List - Greatest Movies of All-Time Ronny Duncan Studios Keywords:Forrest Gump, themes, destiny, staying true to oneself, acts of kindness, simplicity, relatable...

Filmmaker, producer, writer, and podcast guest extraordinaire Jared Bailey joins to discuss one of the iconic texts of 90s popular cinema, 'Forrest Gump' directed by Robert Zemeckis and winner of the 1994 Academy Award for Best Picture (among many others). For all its swings at grandeur, the film is a deceptively simple one in premise: An ordinary man reflects on his life, regaling passersby with his stories about coming of age in America from the 1950's onward and detailing the instances in which he became a passive observer of - or coincidental participant in - many of the generation's noteworthy events. One of the greatest box office successes of the decade, the movie is also one that perfectly encapsulates the deeply cynical politics (or the posited apoliticism) of The End of History. We discuss the film's curious flattening of the historical record, papering over the thornier details of post-war America for an audience seeking to make sense of the decades of conflict that preceded the 90s and its erasure of the material context for monumental touchstones such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. Then, we explore filmmaker Robert Zemeckis and his seemingly pathological need to embed bizarre racial elements into his most popular features, often commenting in ways that become more problematic than the surface-level prejudices of his contemporaries. Finally, we discuss the long-gestating (and ultimately cancelled) sequel to the film, which would have seen Forrest involved in even more historically resonant instances such as the OJ Simpson Bronco chase and the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The St. Andrews International Film Festival — or Sands, for short — is now in its third year, bringing some amazing films and filmmakers to the beautiful Scottish town of St. Andrews. It's already something of a tradition for the Empire Podcast's Chris Hewitt to pop up there and have a natter with some of those filmmakers, including Joe Russo, who is one of the festival's chief benefactors. This year, Joe brought his brother Anthony with him for a special screening of Welcome To Collinwood and a Q&A with that film's producer, and the brothers' mentor, Steven Soderbergh, and in this podcast, Chris sits down with the Russos to talk about their experiences on that film, the advance of A.I., nearly killing Spider-Man, and much, much more. But that's not all – this is a Sands special, folks, and within you'll also find Chris chatting with top casting director Debra Zane, Sands Festival Director Ania Trzebkiatowska, and Alan Silvestri, the legendary composer of Back To The Future, Predator, Forrest Gump, and Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. And yes, they do talk about Portals. With something for everyone, this is a cracking podcast special for a cracking new festival. Enjoy.

GET TO THE CHOPPA! Griffin attempts his best (actually, worst) Arnold voice this week as we head to the jungle with Jon Gabrus and some bic razors. For almost three hours, we're dissecting every little bit of PREDATOR - the glow-stick goo alien blood, the Alan Silvestri score, Arnold's calves, Arnold's biceps, Arnold's long red polo shirt, Arnold's chiseled cheekbones, the way Arnold says KILL ME!!! - you can expect lots of Arnold talk. It's true – we spoke to director Brian De Palma, the filmmaker behind the first “Mission: Impossible” and probably a few of your other favorite movies too. We were celebrating the release of De Palma's first book with Susan Lehman, “Are Snakes Necessary?” but discuss the making of the first movie, along with his notes for the opening crawl of “Star Wars,” replacing Alan Silvestri with Danny Elfman, and editor Paul Hirsch's wedding. It's an epic extravaganza! This episode was originally released in June 2021. You can own “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” on digital and 4K HD, Blu-ray and DVD now.
