Maria Bakalova knows what she's doing when it comes to finding top-tier creative partners in film and television. As a student studying at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Bulgaria, she gravitated toward acclaimed filmmakers Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov, a directing duo she still works with to this day. She met Julian Kostov in 2019 when he shared a casting notice for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, the movie that'd ultimately earn Bakalova an Oscar nomination. Now, Kostov is Bakalova's producing partner. Under their Five Oceans banner they produced Triumph with Grozeva and Valchanov directing. The film was selected as the Bulgarian entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Next up on Bakalova's list of dream collaborators she's hoping to establish a long-standing creative partnership with? James Gunn. In fact, during her Collider Ladies Night interview, Bakalova noted, “If I have to choose one person that I want to stick with the rest of my life, it will be him.”Bakalova worked with Gunn for the first time on Guardians on the Galaxy Vol. 3 in which she played Cosmo the Space Dog. While Gunn's run with the Marvel Cinematic Universe would come to an end there, his working relationship with Bakalova wouldn't. Gunn made the shift from Marvel to DC, and brought Bakalova along with him. He cast her as Princess Ilana Rostovic in his adult animated series, Creature Commandos, the project that'd kick off the new DC Universe. At the start of the show, Task Force M is brought in to protect the Princess and the nation of Pokolistan from Circe (voiced by Anya Chalotra) and the Sons of Themyscira. However, as the season progresses, those involved start to question who they're protecting the Princess from - and if she needs protecting at all. With all seven episodes of Creature Commandos Season 1 now available to stream on Max, Bakalova joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to revisit her journey to the DC animated series, and to share her take on what goes down during the finale episode of the season. This week, twice Emmy-nominated producer Nicholas Hatton joins Jessica Kantor on Raising Cinephiles. We discussed how everyone creating Jury Duty was treated with care. And. He hopes to continue to make films and television with that idea in mind. We also discussed how he wants to pass on. The joy he gets from experiencing cinema and television and to his daughter. Nicholas Hatton previously worked with Sacha Baron Cohen as a producer of 2020's smash hit, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, and on the Who Is America? Showtime series, for which Hatton received an Emmy nom. While Ronald Gladden is the true star of Jury Duty, the meticulous planning and remarkable behind-the-scenes production is what allowed Hatton and his fellow producers to pull off the well-intentioned ruse. Hatton worked with the team to conceive the set-up, plan out the day-by-day of the “case,” and cast the talented actors. He was on set every day, becoming Ronald's daily “constant” and “confidante” who Ronald believed was a courthouse security guard. Trust was developed in this daily touch point between Ronald and Nick that truly allowed the production to go off without a hitch.Jury Duty was released on Freevee in April 2023. Part documentary, part sitcom, Jury Duty has received critical acclaim and commercial success and was recently nominated for four Emmys: Outstanding Comedy Series (Nicholas Hatton is one of the nominees), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (James Marsden), Outstanding Casting for Comedy Series (Susie Faris) and Outstanding Writing for Comedy Series (Mekki Leeper).Movie Discussed:All Dogs Go to HeavenRobin Hood Prince of ThievesPredatorDeath Becomes HerThe BurbsBigHot FuzzJawsThe AntmanBarbie New Episodes Every Wednesday!EPISODE CREDITS:Host, Producer, Editor: Jessica KantorBooker: Noelia MurphyBe sure to follow and tag Raising Cinephiles on Instagram

How do you write the score to someone else's self-mythology? That's the challenge this week's guest, composer Ronen Landa, faced for one of the year's most idiosyncratic, difficult-to-describe shows, Peacock's Paul T. Goldman. A strange mix of documentary comedy and wish fulfillment, the show follows the titular man, a nebbishy middle-aged guy who turned his hellish marriage to his second ex-wife into a grand quest for justice in the form of a bestselling self-published novel (and subsequent script adaptation). These, with the help of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm director Jason Woliner, take the form of compellingly straight-laced reenactments of Paul's life as he saw them, with the man playing himself, surrounded by professional actors at once bewildered and fascinated by his presence. It's a wild, weird mix of true-crime and true-crime satire, a needle that Landa was very careful to thread. In fact, he constructed his score much like a concept album, bringing in an intimate ensemble with strings and piano to record a lend Paul's own search for truth -- as blinkered as it may or may not be -- a sense of grand, personal tragedy. Then there's its ominous main title theme, with harsh, lurching low piano chords surrounded by mysterious strings and building brass. Together, Landa and I speak about building the score for Paul T. Goldman without seeing much of the finished product, folding the theme on top of that, and embracing the enigma of its strange, compelling central figure. And Ronen also talks us through two of the show's biggest cues, including its mysterious title theme. Plus, we end up chatting about his own upcoming musical dip into the world of Star Trek. You can find Ronen Landa at his official website. Paul T. Goldman is currently streaming on Peacock. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Lionsgate Entertainment.
Jena Friedman wants you to know that she's in on the joke. And in her new book of essays, pointedly titled ‘Not Funny,' she deftly demonstrates how she has become one of the most uncompromising comedic voices of her generation, from her days as a field producer on ‘The Daily Show,' to her Oscar-nominated writing on Sacha Baron Cohen's ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,' to her first hour-long stand-up ‘Ladykiller,' in which she delivered some killer abortion jokes while pregnant with her first child. In her third appearance on the podcast, Friedman holds nothing back, spilling tea about her negative experience with James Corden, revealing why she decided to turn the tables on male comedians like Jon Stewart and Jim Gaffigan by asking them the offensive questions female comedians tend to get in interviews and discussing that time Bill Burr “told on himself” by responding to her tweets about predatory comics. Jason Woliner has directed episodes of Parks and Recreation, Nathan for You and The Last Man on Earth. In 2020, he directed his first ever major motion picture: Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. His latest project is really interesting: it's a documentary series, a project he's been working on for the last ten years. Paul T Goldman is a documentary series about a man who calls himself Paul T. Goldman. Goldman claims, among many other things, that his former wife stole money from him and ran a human trafficking ring. It's a wild, funny and at times touching show that is just as much a comment on true crime documentaries as it is a true crime documentary. We'll talk with Jason Woliner about Paul T. Goldman, and the meta nature of the show. Plus, we'll dive into Jason's time directing Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, and the way things became very dangerous for him on set.

As a child actor, Jason Woliner knew he wanted to be a Director. He started with a mini DV camera and set out to make a feature for Sundance. He dropped out of college, convinced a few friends to join him, and ended up making a “long student film.” The 97-minute “terrible, horrorible” project taught him a great deal about filmmaking. Over the years, Jason has worked with Patton Oswalt, Aziz Ansari, and Jon Benjamin. He's Directed Parks and Recreation, New Girl, Nathan for You, and Last Man on Earth. Most recently, Jason has created the unusual mini series, Paul T. Goldman. The description reads, “One man's efforts to uncover the truth thrust him into a labyrinth of fraud, deception, and criminality that transform him ‘from wimp to warrior.'” Like Borat, it's a mixture of real and unreal, focused on one unusual character. In this interview, Jason talks about his love for specific comedies, why he generally avoids “for hire” work, how he found a unique niche in the comedy industry, working for “real laughs” during a pitch, and how to execute on unique ideas to find the “best, funniest version.” Subscribe for video interviews on YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/CreativePrinciples?sub_confirmation=1 If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? It only takes about 60-seconds and it really helps convince some of the hard-to-get guests to sit down and have a chat (simply scroll to the bottom on your iTunes Podcast app and click “Write Review"). Director Jason Woliner (Paul T. Goldman, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, The Last Man on Earth) sat down with Creative Coalition CEO Robin Bronk. In this episode, Woliner talks about the crazy true story behind his new Peacock docuseries, “Paul T. Goldman,” shooting a scene with Rudy Giuliani for "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm", his career origins on “Human Giant'' with Aziz Ansari, Paul Scheer, and Rob Huebel, and much more.
Jason Woliner is still trying to figure out why he has spent more than 10 years of his life working on a strange comedic docuseries about a middle-aged Florida man who tweeted at him out of the blue. Earlier this month, the director of ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm' and several ‘Nathan for You' episodes finally premiered ‘Paul T. Goldman' on Peacock. And as he explains in his return to the podcast, the impossible-to-describe project has left him with more questions than answers about its mysterious protagonist. In this episode, Woliner talks about how working with Sacha Baron Cohen helped inform his freewheeling approach to ‘Paul T. Goldman' and addresses the many comparisons that have been made to his friend and collaborator Nathan Fielder's HBO series ‘The Rehearsal'—including allegations that he's “exploiting” the man at the center of the show. Amazon Prime Video today announced a ground-breaking new six-episode documentary series, UNHEARD, the first feature produced by LADbible Australia Originals and with production funding from Screen Australia. All six episodes of UNHEARD will premiere on Amazon Prime Video in Australia, New Zealand and select countries around the world on 29 October, with the first two episodes also available to stream for free on primevideo.com. UNHEARD will give Prime Video members an insight into critical issues of racial discrimination in Australia, including Indigenous deaths in custody, the targeting of Indigenous youth, attacks towards Asians during COVID, Islamophobia, the vilification of the African community and the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. The six stand-alone episodes in the UNHEARD series are told through intimate interviews, blended with animation, archive footage, podcasts, photographs, phone conversations and infographics revealing the shocking statistics and complexities behind the larger issues. Each episode is led by the voices of personal accounts, so their experiences and calls for justice are presented without filter. “The opportunity to program this compelling investigative series is significant to us,” said Tyler Bern, Head of Content, Amazon Prime Video Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. “UNHEARD is a necessary action and awareness series that is globally relevant to Prime members in Australia and makes them aware of social injustice locally. We are very proud to be involved with LADbible Australia on this production and showcasing this important documentary series.” The UNHEARD documentary series is an extension of LADbible Australia's UNHEARD campaign. Launched in February 2021, the campaign utilises LADbible Group's global audience of almost a billion and Australian audience of 11.8 million to support their campaign partners; the National Justice Project, Human Rights Commission, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services, The Refugee Council of Australia, Change.org, African Women Australia, Asian Australian Alliance, Islamophobia Register Australia, Deadly Connections Community and Justice Services and All Together Now. “The UNHEARD campaign and documentary series not only provides a platform for these powerful stories to be told, but also helps put a global focus on Australian incidents of racial injustice that are often overlooked,” says executive producer, writer and creator, Shahn Devendran, Head of Originals, LADbible APAC. “We are proud that LADbible's first feature documentary series is able to support our campaign partners, and in working with Amazon Prime Video and Screen Australia will help bring these important issues to light.” UNHEARD was written and produced by Shahn Devendran (LADbible Australia Originals), Jack Steele (Between Two Lines), Cathy Vu (SBS), Luke Cornish (Alone Out Here), Dan Mansour (The Final Word), Olivia Suleimon (Rosaline's Untaming) and Ellen Dedes-Vallas (Nickelodeon). On today's episode of Art of the Cut, Steve talks with the ACE Eddie-nominated trio behind Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. As you might imagine—if you've seen the film—the editing challenges were extraordinary. Meet Craig Alpert, Michael Giambra, and James Thomas, and learned how they turned chaos into comedy in Sacha Baron Cohen's latest feature. Thanks to Frame.io for their support of Art of the Cut and their pledge to keep this content coming your way. Read this interview and many others at blog.frame.io, where you'll also find expert guides, tutorials, and insights from veteran filmmakers across the film and TV industry.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm took over the culture for a minute or two back in the fall of 2020, not just because Sasha Baron-Cohen as a knack for this with his comedic stylings, but because timing is... everything. In the heat of an election cycle, Borat went for the jugular and put American culture on its heels once again. Hear how the editors saw it and pieced it together. All three of these guys have had amazing careers both with Cohen and on their own. They haven't just been cutting Cohen's work, but much of the BEST comedy to come from the last decade-plus. They talk about working with Cohen, working with comedic genius of all variety, and finding the keys to keeping a story that shifts between scripted and non working in all the most important ways. We talk about the film's humor, politics, story, how it compares to the first one, the breakthrough Oscar-nominated performance from Maria Bakalova and much more! Enjoy! This week, Jerk performs a satanic ritual to pay tribute to Lil Nas X's internet-breaking rollout for Montero (Call Me By Your Name). Soy has no time for Jay Leno's apology to Asian Americans. We also watched the (Oscar-nominated!!) Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and lament about the days when watching a baker write something antisemitic on a cake was shocking (now it's just another Monday). Episode 71 should have a "very nice!" start as we discuss our thoughts on the comedy sequel none of us saw coming. It's BORAT: SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM. The second new release of the week sees writer/director Sofia Coppola reteaming with one of her favorites, Bill Murray. He's paired with Rashida Jones in the father/daughter dramedy, ON THE ROCKS. For this week's THROWBACK CHALLENGE, we dive back into the old format once again and give one another films to see for the first time. Noah tasked Andy with 2017's A24 production, A PRAYER BEFORE DAWN, and Andy tossed Noah another Robert Altman flick to cross off his list: 1974's CALIFORNIA SPLIT. Are y'all staying safe and sane? We hope so. Cheers! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-film-harmonic/support
