Jeff Duff (Duffo) is an Australian singer/cabaret performer, who in his career has used various personae, wardrobe, and satire as features of his performances. This interview was originally published December 16, 2016.
‘Sinatra, Presley, Jagger, Popeye and now Duffo.' — Andy Warhol 1980 ‘I don't think it's overstating the case to say that, had Jeff Duff hailed from a country in the top half of the world, he could now be as acknowledged and acclaimed as David Bowie or Lou Reed or Iggy Pop.' — Glenn A. Baker, rock historian IN A FLAMBOYANT AND OFTEN CONTROVERSIAL MUSIC CAREER JEFF HAS RELEASED THIRTY ALBUMS INCLUDING A RECENT ALBUM WITH MEMBERS OF LEGENDARY BRITISH ROCK BAND DEEP PURPLE. When Duffo took refuge in England in the eighties, he had, as they say, worn out his welcome in Australian rock. He was simply too much of a handful, this ‘waif with a wharfie's voice!' camping it up out front of his trail-blazing rock ensemble ‘Kush‘. At the time, Jeff's androgynous stage persona, dressed in leotards, garish make-up and a touch of the operatics was considered far too outrageous for many Australian audiences. Duff moved to the UK in 1978 where he recorded and performed as Duffo, releasing several albums, touring Europe and having sporadic chart success in Holland and Italy. He also recorded under the names Ivor Biggin and Jupiter Jones. It was somewhat surprising to see him return to Australia to indifferent audiences in 1988, when he performed as a jazz singer with his Jeff Duff Orchestra, an experimental outfit. His signature song remains Lou Reed's ‘Walk On The Wild Side', which he has recorded at least three times. The Jeff Duff Orchestra album featured some reworking of older material, ‘Pilot' and the excellent ‘Killing This Affair'.
My guest today is percussionist, Tony Azzopardi. Tony grew up in Sydney, the youngest of 15 children with his mother and father coming from Malta. Music was always in the family with Tony's first band being the family band called Africa, with his brother Marz, the drummer of the band, being particularly influential to Tony's early development as a musician, and as a percussionist. These were the early to mid 70s. Tony has been a professional musician ever since, having played with live or recorded with the a lot of the best including Doug Parkinson, Marcia Hines, Roger Frampton, Jenny Morris, Mark Hunter , Andrew Oh, Richard Clapton, Gina Jeffries, Jeff Duff, Tina Arena, Ian Moss, Barry Leef and many others. Tony was also the house band percussionist for Australian Idol. In an effort to pull back a bit from constant touring and gigging, Tony and his friend created DRUMBEAT, an interactive drums and percussion show that would tour Australian schools. In 2011, Tony got very ill with cancer. Yet during treatment, he stilled went out and gigged. After beating that cancer, it was time for a change so he packed up and moved out of Sydney. He now spends his days on his farm in the hunter region of NSW, and he still plays everyday. So without further ardue, Ladies and gentleman, please give it up for Tony Azzopardi. This conversation was recorded 18/08/2020. While the 60s exploded through the mass media seeking out stoned naked hippies in Haight Ashbury, it was a little more subdued and awkward in Australia. Roselands hosted a glittering cavalcade of stars from The Master's Apprentices to Little Stevie Wonder. It was always 70 degrees by the Raindrop Fountain and the entertainment was always family friendly, except when Graham Kennedy dropped his duds.
Robbie Barnhill spent many years as the front-person of the Fun In Acapulco Musical Experience. We discuss the art of playing covers, what are the best songs and how every Yoko Ono fan in the world formed a band and became the B-52s.
