How do tapes work? Who's back (for the first time even though we don't see them)? And what's set way back in the middle of a field? We record the answers to these questions and more as we deconstruct Season 1, Episode 8 of Family Matters. Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.Join our countdown to number one (and our slow descent into madness) in all the places you expect internet people to be:Website: jumpingtheshuttle.spaceEmail: jumpingtheshuttle@gmail.comInstagram: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Twitter: @JumpingShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577TikTok: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Brought to you by Smooth My Balls

Two men named Gary helped make Toronto cool in the 1970s, at a time when this city most definitely was not. They had no rule book. They didn't have a lot of money. But they had interests and ideas -- a lot of them crazy -- and they had the nerve to make things happen. First came movie theatres. Then came concert bookings. And what a roster of acts they introduced to the city... The Ramones, The Police, The Smiths, The Go-Gos and The B-52s to name a few. And now one of the Garys... Gary Topp... is the subject of a new book called He Hijacked My Brain, about his often wild career as a cultural curator. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Journalist and author David King joins us in part 1 to talk about Ross Youngs, who was born in Shiner, Texas, in 1897, and later played 10 seasons for John McGraw's New York Giants. In that time he was a key player on four National League pennant and two World Series title teams. A career .322 hitter, Youngs fell ill during the 1926 season and later died at age 30 from kidney disease. The Veterans' Committee elected Youngs to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.King is author of Ross Youngs: In Search of a San Antonio Baseball Legend (History Press 2013).In part two, Craig and Rex talks about some musical artists that are not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but should be (or so they think). You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books, including books featured in this episode, through our store at Bookshop.org. Welcome to the penultimate episode of our ninth season, featuring Pat Irwin of Suss. You may remember him from last year's Suss talk, with his bandmates Jonathan Gregg and Bob Holmes, but he's back for a solo talk this time, which allowed us to dig into his wild life in music, from his time in the the late ‘70s New York No Wave scene with The Raybeats and 8-Eyed Spy, to his work with Southern freak icons The B-52s, and his long career crafting music for TV and animation, including shows like Rocko's Modern Life and Bored to Death. Things have been very, very busy on the Suss front. This year, Irwin contributed guitars, keyboards, harmonium, and loops to Suss' fifth album, Birds & Beasts. On top of that, Suss' Bob Holmes, who also hosts the must-listen Ambient Country podcast, has launched Across the Horizon, a collaboration with Northern Spy Records that brings on board various like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Transmissions guests like Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate next year in a double LP comp. Stewart Copeland of The Police is on Roadcase for this week's episode! Stewart is a noted author, composer, multi-Grammy winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, and just all-around great dude. He's a truly legendary drummer who created a style uniquely his own, and approaches life with a great sense of humor, kinetic energy and wit; we really get into it with his loads of opinions, fascinating background info and deep understanding of the Universal Power of Music. In this rousing and amusing hang, we chat not only about the early days with his band (yes, we talk about Sting), but also his latest projects, including his new album of “derangements” of Police songs, entitled Police Deranged for Orchestra, a new book, The Police Diaries, documenting the early days of the landmark band, and his newly released international version of Police songs for orchestra, Police Beyond Borders. He is also releasing a new deluxe version of the 1980 album from his original band, Klark Kent. We go deep on this one and span the decades (and even millenia!) so make sure to tune into my epic interview with this true musical icon!! While Athens in Greece gifted civilisation with democracy, science, philosophy, taxes, writing, and schools, Athens in Georgia gave the world Widespread Panic, REM and the subject of today's podcast The B-52s. A frenetic drummer in strange glasses, a guitarist who clearly needed to add more strings to his bow, a lead singer who would shout and vociferate more than sing, and two bouffant-wearing female vocalists that sounded unlike anyone else. How was this a recipe for a successful New Wave band? Today we talk to Paul Wexler about his Legendary Father: Jerry Wexler, Paul's work with Van Morrison and the Go Gos, his association with Stone Temple Pilots, we talk about Led Zeppelin (a band his father helped discover) and of course Paul's own band WexWax and their debut album "Swept Away"! Rob met Paul many years ago when he walked into his print shop in Clinton, New Jersey (to get sheet music copied) .. they've recently re-connected through facebook. It was such a pleasure to talk to Paul again and hearing how passionate he is about songwriting and playing music. ABOUT PAUL: Paul Wexler has spent much of his adult life producing music. Paul has produced and worked in the studio with such artists as The Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, James Brown, The B52s, Grace Jones, The GoGos, Tin Huey, The Fleshtones, The Weirdos, The Mutants and others. The son of legendary producer/A&R/Record Man Jerry Wexler, Paul's early immersion in the roots and branches of R&B, Country, Jazz and Rock'n'Roll was a gift from his father that keeps giving and is reflected in Wexwax's diverse sound. For the past 8 years, Wexwax has been performing in NYC. Although Paul is now living in the Bay Area, he frequently returns to NYC to gig. After years of honing their sound, Wexwax has now recorded Swept Away, their debut album. Recorded at 25th Street Studios in Oakland with master engineer Gabriel Shepard helming the board (Taj Mahal, The Kronos Quartet) Swept Away is an ambitious work that fully embraces the band's multifaceted live shows. ************** COPYRIGHT CLAIM: The songs "Trembling", "We're Going for a Ride", "She Doesn't Love Him" and "Voices From the Harbor" used with permission from Paul Wexler. Episode 218: Kari and Joe want to dress you up in their love... ew, not like that. Working with a suggestion from amazing listener Dom, we have put together an 80s outfit using the titles of songs. Get out your Wigs, Favourite Shirts and Goody Two Shoes and listen along. Quiz Time: Kari continues quizzing Joe with some (pretty easy) questions about 80s music to determine who is the Queen of 80s Trivia, but it gets heated. (Joe calls Kari a B! Can you believe it??)
photo by: Orestes Gonzales Pat Irwin, has been making music for over 40 year. He has continuously pushed boundaries with his captivating soundtracks for renowned television series such as Dexter: New Blood, Nurse Jackie, Bored To Death, and animated classics like Rocko's Modern Life, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Alongside his TV contributions, Patt was a member of the legendary B-52s and serving as a founding member of two influential New York/No Wave bands, The Raybeats and 8 Eyed Spy. Presently, Pat records and performs with the ambient music ensemble, SUSS.
Back in the early 1900s, the town of Allensworth became the first California town founded, financed and governed by Black Americans. The fertile Tulare Lake region should've been a utopia for the Black doctors, professors and farmers who settled there. But historic power dynamics left them, and the Allensworth community today, on the losing side of many water and land use questions. Now, as the Sierra snowpack melts and floods the Tulare Lake Basin, communities like Allensworth are uniquely vulnerable to flooding. Reporter Teresa Cotsirilos visited Allensworth earlier this spring to learn how residents are coping. Plus, when you think of California rockers from the 1970s, bands like the Eagles or Journey might come to mind. You probably don't picture an interracial band of women — some of them Filipina-American and queer — from places like Sacramento and Folsom. Fanny was the first all-female rock band to release an album on a major label, breaking ground for women musicians like the Go Gos, the B52s, and Bonnie Rait. In fact, Fanny released five albums by 1974, but today, a lot of people haven't heard of them. A new documentary film screening at CAAMFest in San Francisco follows band members nearly 50 years later as they record a reunion album. Sasha Khokha spoke with June Millington, Fanny's lead guitarist, and film director, Bobbi Jo Hart, about the band's legacy, the film and why age is just a number.
Zack Alford now plays with the Psychedelic Furs, (and it looks like they'll be hitting the road again soon) but he's also played with folks like Bruce Springsteen, the B-52s, Billy Joel, Gwen Stefani and David Bowie. We got to talk with Zack about his fascinating career behind the kit and what he's learned along the way. For more information, you can check out Zachary's website, follow him on Instagram or follow him on Facebook.

Pat Irwin is a renowned film and television composer; some of his scores include Dexter: New Blood, Rocko's Modern Life, Pepper Ann, and Nurse Jackie. He's also a multi-instrumentalist who was a member of the B52s for 18 years; he founded The Raybeats and 8 Eyed Spy, and more recently the band SUSS of which I'm a fan. Pat also teaches film composition at NYU, and Brooklyn College at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, and this conversation wove it's way into important topics for all of us: a life well-lived, grief, the importance of creativity and of having a good hang. As always, I've included detailed timestamps, so if you want to jump to his days with the B52s or Dexter, go ahead, but I hope you'll take the time to listen to this whole episode which is rich with music and stories. Pat is as articulate as he is creative. You may be surprised that the episode begins with his time in Paris interviewing jazz musicians and learning from John Cage. Hello, Lit listeners. If you were one of those high school kids who spent hours holed up in your bedroom spinning your favorite albums on your turntable at ear-bleeding volume until your mama hollered at you to turn off that racket and take out the trash, and dreaming of blowing your one-horse town to become a rock star, this is the episode for you. Peter McDade is here to talk about his novel ‘The Weight of Sound', about aspiring rock musician Spider Webb, who at 18 announces to his parents that he will skip high school graduation and move to Athens, Georgia, to launch his career in the birthplace of R.E.M. and the B-52s. Through rotating points of view and covering a span of over twenty years, the book traces the ways Spider and his music affect the people in his life: family, fellow musicians, girlfriends, fans, roadies, and music industry lackeys. As drummer for the rock band Uncle Green, Peter McDade spent fifteen years traveling the highways of America in a series of Ford vans. While the band searched for fame and a safe place to eat before a gig, he began writing short stories and novels. Uncle Green went into semi-retirement after four labels, seven records, and one name change; Peter went to Georgia State University and majored in History and English, eventually earning an MA in History. His first novel, ‘The Weight of Sound', was published by Wampus Multimedia in 2017 and won the Georgia Author of the Year Award for best debut. ‘Songs By Honeybird', also published by Wampus Multimedia, was released in 2022. Both books have soundtracks of original songs.Given Peter's cred as both writer and musician, he's doing double duty as both author and music guru in this episode. PoMo culture has a couple dominant views about history: a) it is written by the winners, and b) it is meaningless. Both of those promote cynicism and apathy which corrode the human soul. Instead a biblical and Christian worldview says there is hope. I explore why that is so. I also pare back some problematic ways that Christians approach and think about history. Oh, and I unpack why it is that I am increasingly typified by dangerosity!
