SKYHOOKS' Greg Macainsh on 50 Years since Living in the '70s - the Untold Story

A Breath of Fresh Air

In the mid '70s Skyhooks basically gave the Australian music industry the enema it had been needing. For too long many Australian bands spent hours copying their UK/USA cousins and Australian content in songs was far and few between.Skyhooks were cheeky, brash and colourful: wearing makeup years before Kiss were even conceived. Songwriter Greg Macainsh composed many amazing tunes-many sprinkled with Melbourne place names and Australian themes and he put together the band that would change the musical history of the country. Greg Macainsh grew up in Melbourne, Australia. He was exposed to a diverse array of musical influences and his passion for music developed during his teenage years, leading him to pick up the bass guitar. In 66, while at high school, Macainsh formed his first band, Spare Parts, alongside drummer Imants "Freddie" Strauks. This initial foray into the world of music marked the beginning of a collaborative relationship that would prove pivotal in the years to come. The duo laid the groundwork for subsequent projects, including bands like Sound Pump, Reuben Tice, Claptrap, and Frame. In 73, Macainsh co-founded Skyhooks. Skyhooks quickly gained a cult following in Melbourne, captivating audiences with their theatrical performances and provocative lyrics that addressed themes such as drugs, sex, and the Australian gay scene. Their music was distinctly Australian, often referencing local places and culture. However, it wasn't until the addition of lead vocalist Graeme "Shirley" Strachan in 1974 that the band solidified its classic lineup and began its ascent to national prominence. The release of their debut album, "Living in the 70's," in 74 marked a turning point for Skyhooks and Australian rock music. Produced by Daddy Cool's Ross Wilson, the album showcased Macainsh's songwriting prowess. Despite six of its ten songs being banned by Australian commercial radio due to their controversial content, the album soared to the top of the charts, remaining at number one for 16 weeks and selling over 200,000 copies—a record-breaking achievement at the time.Skyhooks' success was further propelled by their dynamic performances on tv programs like ABC's "Countdown." The band's second album, "Ego Is Not a Dirty Word," released in 1975, continued their winning streak, topping the charts for 11 weeks and solidifying their status as Australian rock icons.Despite their monumental success, Skyhooks faced challenges, particularly in breaking into the international market. A 1976 tour of the United States yielded limited success, as American audiences struggled to connect with the band's uniquely Australian references and flamboyant style. Internal changes followed, with guitarist Red Symons departing in 1977 and lead vocalist Shirley Strachan leaving in 1978. These shifts marked the beginning of a transitional period for the band, leading to a decline in commercial success and culminating in their disbandment in 1980.Following the dissolution of Skyhooks, Greg Macainsh embarked on a diverse and fulfilling career. He earned a law degree, and applied his creative talents to various projects.  Macainsh also developed a passion for mountain biking and culinary arts, notably perfecting a kosher chicken stock.Skyhooks' impact on Australian music and culture is immeasurable. Their fearless exploration of taboo subjects and incorporation of Australian vernacular into their lyrics challenged the status quo and paved the way for future artists to express authentic narratives. In this episode we journey through Greg Macainsh's life. From his early days in Melbourne to the heights of fame with Skyhooks and his subsequent personal and professional endeavours, Greg story is one of creativity, resilience, and lasting impact. This episode is certain to resonate with music lovers, baby boomers, Australian music fans, Skyhooks enthusiasts, and aficionados of 70s music all over the world.#skyhooks #australianrockmusic #'70srock #hits

Growing up in the United States, I was fortunate to not know what it's like to go through a day with bombs falling around me and my dad fighting in the war. For Robin Ayoub, this was his daily reality, and as he would eventually discover, getting away from it was how he found his way home.Imagine being eleven years old and given 24 hours to learn how to operate a knitting machine because your family's survival depends on it. Then picture yourself going door-to-door every weekend, selling the sweaters you made, knowing you can't come home until every single one is sold. That's where he learned what all good sales professionals know: the importance of making “one more call” or “one more stop on your route” before quitting time. That was just the beginning of Robin's extraordinary journey from war-torn Lebanon to becoming a tech executive whose influence spans four continents. Growing up as the oldest of five children, he was taught the importance of being productive and responsible. With a civil war raging around him, survivability was key. There was no time to lose. Even with all this going on, Robin finished college and got a job as a bank teller. One day he was sent home because of a bombing raid. Long story short – listen to hear what happened – he ended up in the hospital. When he got out, he said, “that's enough. I'm done here!” He took his younger brother and moved to Cyprus. He found a job and from there helped his parents and four younger siblings get their immigration paperwork in order. They all moved to New Brunswick, Canada, landing in the middle of a snowstorm and not speaking English. Through luck, Robin found a Maronite priest who spoke their language in the phone book, and within a short period of time he found work sweeping a construction site – a great use of his education in computers. But, it turns out the hotel they were expanding on that construction site needed somebody to update their billing software. Since programming languages were universal, his lack of English at the time didn't stop him. This opportunity led Robin to more jobs in computer programming, which in turn launched him onto what has become a rich, successful entrepreneurial journey. In Lebanon, daily bombardments were normal. The constant threat of violence became background noise. And he thought it was all fine. But as we know, Fine is a 4-Letter Word. In a moment, when you meet Robin, you'll discover how he looked back and realized how living with bombs falling around him showed him the importance of his family, his work, and his opportunity to inspire and lead others. You may be particularly interested in how it informed his definition of “perfect”.And I can hardly wait for you to hear where you can find Robin and his family every single morning at 6:30, without fail. Bob Crewe1930- 2014Inducted Into The Songwriters Hall Of Fame In 1995.While songwriter/producer/recording star, Bob Crewe, is perhaps best remembered for the notable parade of hits penned with co-writer Bob Gaudio for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, his songwriting credits began considerably earlier. In the early '50s, New Jersey-born Crewe first tasted success on the music charts with writing teammate Frank Slay with a batch of hits for a variety of artists. Among the best known were "Silhouettes" and "Daddy Cool" for The Rays; "Lah Dee Dah" and "Lucky Ladybug" for Billy and Lillie; and Freddy Cannon's "Tallahassee Lassie" and "Okefenokee."In 1961, Crewe also blossomed as a recording artist himself, with a pair of solo albums on Warwick Records. Kicks, featuring "The Whiffenpoof Song," and Crazy in the Heart, both produced by one of the more colorful producers of that time.Following these successes as a solo recording act, Crewe joined forces with songwriter Bob Gaudio, and good fortune struck almost immediately for the pair with the smash hit, "Sherry," for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Thus began a years-long association with an uninterrupted string of chart successes including "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," "Ronnie," "Walk Like a Man," "Bye Bye Baby" and "Connie 0," as well as the monumental Frankie Valli hit, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."Other Crewe and Gaudio successes include "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine," for The Walker Brothers and "Silence Is Golden" by The Tremeloes. Following this phase, Crewe moved out again on his own to form The Bob Crewe Generation ("Music to Watch Girls By"), utilizing studio musicians and original material for instrumental music collections. Bob Crewe later teamed with writer, Charles Fox, in penning the soundtrack for Dino De Laurentis' film, "Barbarella."During the mid-sixties, Bob Crewe turned discoverer, locating a band known as Billy Lee and The Rivieras, which he later re-named, Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, a major success on the charts with such Crewe-arranged smashes as "Jenny Take a Ride," "Devil With the Blue Dress On" and "Sock It to Me Baby."As the '60s were coming to a close, Crewe had also established his own recording firm, Crewe Records, which owned hits by Oliver and Lesley Gore, among others. Later, Crewe wrote and produced the song, "Eternity," which became an international hit for Vicki Carr. Following a short stay with Motown Records, when he produced what turned out to be Bobby Darin's final album, Crewe rejoined forces with Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli, and bought back from Motown the tape master for Valli's "My Eyes Adored You," a song co-written with Kenny Nolan, which became a huge new hit for Valli on Private Stock Records. The song "Lady Marmalade," another joint effort for Crewe and Nolan, went on to reach hit status and also helped re-establish Patti LaBelle as an artist of major stature.Still later, Crewe and Gaudio teamed with another writer, Jerry Corbetta, in penning the hit song "You're Looking Like Love to Me," for Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson. Crewe also collaborated with Corbetta and the writer, Ellie Greenwich, in producing the original cast album for Greenwich's Broadway musical, "Leader of the Pack."In addition to his music, Crewe also owned impressive credentials in the art world. He has designed numerous album covers and has been featured in several one-man gallery showings, including The Earl McGrath Gallery and Thomas Solomon's Garage in Los Angeles.

From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock and as a solo artist with no less than 26 ARIA Top 40 hits to his credit as a singer, songwriter and producer, ROSS WILSON is one of Australia's most awarded, respected and well-known artists. From the legendary band Daddy Cool whose number one anthem Eagle Rock and debut album “Daddy Who?” smashed all previous sales records in Australia an astounding 50 years ago in 1971, to the 1977 formation of Mondo Rock, delivering 80's hits ‘Cool World', ‘State of The Heart', ‘Chemistry', ‘No Time', and ‘Come Said The Boy' and into the 21st century as a solo performer, Ross has never been out of the limelight. In fact, Ross Wilson is probably the only person in Australian rock music who can't make a comeback simply because he's never been away. With a career that spans well over 50 years, Ross remains one of this country's most respected and most beloved artists. From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock, as a solo artist, a songwriter or producer of the legendary Skyhooks and Jo Jo Zep, Ross's success has continued unabated. He fronted Daddy Cool and exploded out of the '70s playing rootsy '50s sounds. He then formed Mondo Rock who surfed the contemporary scene with chart topping singles & albums from the mid '70s to the late '80s. As a solo performer and major songwriter he continued to achieve success and make his mark during the '90s & beyond with many of his songs being recorded by artists as diverse as Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Troy Cassar-Daley, Keke (Spain), Renee Geyer, Christine Anu, Duane Jarvis (US), Elkie Brooks (UK) even The Wiggles! His latest release in 2023, an EP called 'She's Stuck On Facebook All The Time' is a modern day tragicomedy in the blues genre. Ross Wilson joins us this week to fill us in on the entirety of his musical career. He's had an amazing ride and is as entertaining in interview as he is on stage. A must listen. Bill Armstrong - Legendary Music Producer was born  in 1929.   The Melbourne audio technician-turned-producer has been at the forefront of the local music industry for more than 60 years.   In the mid-50s, Armstrong was working as a "balance officer" at ABC Radio, producing live-to-air programs, outside broadcasts and variety shows and working with the likes of Graham Kennedy. In 1956, he was charged with overseeing the PA system at the main stadium of the Melbourne Olympic Games.   In 1965, Armstrong opened his own studio in a small terrace house in Albert Rd, South Melbourne. One of the first pop recordings made there was the backing track for The Easybeats' 1965 breakthrough hit "She's So Fine", which was overseen by British-born engineer Roger Savage.   Over the next few years the studios  expanded into six adjoining properties, including four studios equipped with 4-track machines. In 1968 Armstrong installed one of the first 8-track recorders in Australia, followed by 16 and then 24-track machines, together with state-of-the-art mixing desks in the early '70s. During this time, many of Australia's most distinguished producers and engineers worked there. The original engineering team were Roger Savage, Allan Pay and Philip Webster. Armstrong's studios soon overtook two other major studios in Australia at the time - the EMI and Festival Records facilities in Sydney - to become the most sought-after recording venue in the country, and the "engine room" of Australian pop and rock recording. Many of the most popular and successful Australian recordings from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s were made there, including hit albums and singles by The Masters Apprentices, The Twilights, The Groove, The Groop, Zoot, The Aztecs, Russell Morris, Brian Cadd, Daddy Cool, Franciscus Henri, Hans Poulsen, Spectrum, John Farnham, Skyhooks, Little River Band, The Sports, Models and many others. Many famous overseas artists also recorded there while visiting Australia, including Earl Hines, Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, and Stephane Grapelli.[2]   Armstrong left the company in 1977 and stuck with the music industry, working as the manager of SBS Radio in Sydney and Melbourne before establishing the first commercial FM radio station in 1980, EON FM, now Triple M. His contribution to the industry has been well recognised – an ARIA for Lifetime contribution to the Australian Music Industry, the Advance Australia Award for outstanding contribution to the industry and commerce, an APRA for Outstanding Contribution to the music industry and the National Film and Sound Archive's Cochrane-Smith award for his contribution to Sound Heritage, among them.

The collection represents Part Two of the linked short story collection UPSTATE re-released in 2020 by Tortoise Books (and originally released under the title The New York Stories by CCLaP in 2015). In A Single Bound is read by Seth Berg (BIO below). INTRO/OUTRO music is Drinking of Me and was generously provided by Monkey Wrench. READER BIO Seth Berg is a hatchet-wielding forest-dweller who digs tasty hallucinatory literature. A hot-sauce-addicted pyromaniac with an MFA from Bowling Green State University, Berg fantasizes about flight without mechanisms, alien glyph systems, and snowshoeing through your nocturnal dreamscapes. He is a professor, poet, artifact-maker, and amateur astrophysicist whose mathematically coded collections of poetry will haunt, invigorate, provoke, and inspire you. Berg's first book, Muted Lines From Someone Else's Memory won the Dark Sky Books 2009 book contest. His second book, Aviary, co-authored with Bradford K. Wolfenden II, won the 2015 Artistically Declined Twin Antlers Contest, and was released by Civil Coping Mechanisms in January of 2017. Other poems and short fiction can be found in Connecticut Review, 13th Warrior Review, Spittoon Literary Review, BlazeVOX, Heavy Feather Literary Review, The Montucky Review, Masque & Spectacle, and Lake Effect, among others. Recently, poems were anthologized in GTCPR Volume III and Daddy Cool. He lives in Minnesota with his two supernatural children, Oak and Sage, and his magical better half, Kori. He loves your face. What the Riff?!?
1973 - March: Pink Floyd "The Dark Side of the Moon"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 21, 2022 39:49

Arguably the biggest album of the entire rock era, Pink Floyd's eighth studio album would propel them to superstardom.  The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most acclaimed records in history, and it is commercially unmatched in its longevity.  It topped the US Billboard Top LP's and Tape chart, and charted for 962 weeks in total!Pink Floyd at this time was David Gilmour on guitar and vocals, Roger Waters on bass and vocals, Richard Wright on keyboards, and Nick Mason on percussion. The Dark Side of the Moon was envisioned as a concept album focusing on different types of pressure like greed, conflict, and death.  It also included examination of mental health issues - as would much of Pink Floyd's discography - inspired by the problems experienced by former front man Syd Barrett.  While singles were released, we strongly recommend listening to the album in totality to get the best experience out of it.Bruce brings us this monster album, and friend of the show Mike Fernandez joins us in Wayne's absence. TimeThis was released in the US as the second single from the album (after Money).  Roger Waters wrote the lyrics.  David Gilmour and Richard Wright share lead vocals - unusual for Richard Wright.  The sounds of clocks were recorded by Alan Parsons in an antique store as a quadrophonic test, but the sounds fit so well with the theme of this track that the band included it.  All four principal members were credited with songwriting, and this would be the last time this would happen in the band's history. The Great Gig in the SkyThis track follows Time, and is basically an instrumental with some spoken words at the front.  The band went around the studio asking people questions and Gerry O'Driscal's response is recorded on this track.  Female vocalizations are provided by Clare Torry, a session vocalist that Alan Parsons brought in.  She wasn't really told what to sing, but was told, "There's no lyrics.  It's about dying - have a bit of a sing on that, girl."  Brain DamageRoger Waters is on lead in this song, with Gilmour providing backing vocals.  This and other insanity-themed lyrics are based on Syd Barrett.  The lyric, "And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes" has a historical basis, as Barrett would play a different song than the rest of the band on more than one occasion toward the end of his tenure with the band.  EclipseThis final track is actually a different song from Brain Damage, but is commonly played with it on rock radio stations because there is no break between the two on the album.  The song reflects the ying and yang of life - good and bad, life and death, light and dark.  "And everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme to the television game show $10,000 PyramidDick Clark would serve as the initial host of this game show which started in March 1973.   STAFF PICKS:Crocodile Rock by Elton JohnBrian initiates the staff picks with the first number 1 song in the U.S. for Elton John.  The song has a 50's throwback sound, with lyrics that tell about a time when the singer danced the Crocodile Rock with Susie.  It was inspired by Australian band Daddy Cool and their song “Eagle Rock.”The Cisco Kid by WarRob's staff pick is from War's 1972 album, “The World is a Ghetto.” It made it to number 2 on the charts.  There's a reggae feel, a little funk, and a little ZZ Top.  The song is about two cowboys, Cisco and Poncho, and their adventures.  The band wanted their music to spread brotherhood and harmony to displace greed, racism, hunger, and gangs.Stuck in the Middle With You by Stealers Wheel Friend of the show Mike Fernandez brings us one of the classic lines in rock music - “clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle with you.”  Gerry Rafferty  is the founder and principal songwriter for the group.  This is Stealers Wheel's biggest hit.Danny's Song by Anne MurrayBruce wraps up the staff picks with a song Kenny Loggins wrote for his brother Danny at the birth of his son Colin.  It was first performed by a group called Gator Creek in 1970, then by Loggins and Messina in 1972.  This cover by Canadian country-pop singer Anne Murray would go to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Also Sprach Zarathustra by DeodatoThis funky take on the Richard Strauss piece famous for its use in "2001:  A Space Odyssey" was on the charts in March 1973.
