Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 6, 2026 is: flamboyant flam-BOY-ant adjective Someone or something described as flamboyant has a very noticeable quality that attracts a lot of attention. Such a person or thing is often strikingly elaborate or colorful in their behavior or display. // Reality television attracts millions of viewers for its depictions of flamboyant, larger-than-life personalities living equally flamboyant lifestyles. See the entry > Examples: “[Helen] McCrory's flamboyant and perfectly drawn portrayal of Polly was the show's real treasure, a steel-willed matriarch unusually attuned to the mysticism of the Shelby family's Romani roots who also served as a ruthlessly pragmatic consigliere. ... McCrory's Polly was so electric that the show remained totally riveting any time she was onscreen.” — Jack Hamilton, Slate, 20 Mar. 2026 Did you know? Associate the word flamboyant with bananas flambé and the word's fiery etymology will be seared in your mind. Flamboyant, which was borrowed into English from French in the 19th century, can be traced back to the Old French word flambe, meaning “flame.” In its earliest uses flamboyant referred to an ornate style of Gothic architecture popular in France and Spain, which featured waving curves suggestive of flames. Eventually, the word developed a more general second sense for anything eye-catching or showy. And of course, flambe is also the origin of the English adjective flambé, which describes food flamboyantly dressed or served with flaming liquor.

Winnipeg's Alexa Dirks, better known by her stage name Begonia, is one of the coolest voices in alt-pop with a bombastic, technicolour sense of style. She sits down with Tom Power to talk about the record, her critical acclaim, and the difference between Begonia the flamboyant performer and Alexa the songwriter (spoiler: they're not too different at all).

This week on Queernundrum, we're sharpening our swords and polishing our boots—or heels—for a deep dive into one of the campiest cult classics of the early '80s. We won't spoil the title (yet), but here's a hint: it involves twin brothers, capes, color-coordinated costumes, and a whole lot of sass. We explore how this outrageous comedy flipped the script on traditional heroism, bringing camp, queerness, and coded resistance to the silver screen—whether Hollywood was ready or not. We dig into the layered performance of George Hamilton, the brilliance of Brenda Vaccaro, the menace of Ron Leibman, and the cool glam of Lauren Hutton, tying it all to a time when queer representation had to sneak in through the back door of comedy. And speaking of injustice—Gary doesn't hold back when we talk about the recent and infuriating decision to rename the U.S. Navy ship originally dedicated to Harvey Milk. During Pride Month, no less. We reflect on what Milk's legacy means today, how erasure still shows up in military and political spaces, and why visibility still matters—campy movies included.Topics Covered:• Queer-coded characters in 1980s films• LGBTQ+ cinema history• George Hamilton and dual roles in comedy• The cultural impact of Zorro, The Gay Blade• Camp as resistance• Pride Month controversies• Harvey Milk and LGBTQ+Intro music by Jahzzar “Please Listen Carefully” “Jahzzar (betterwithmusic.com) CC BY-SA” and Outro music by Scott Holmes “Acoustic Indie Folk” @ scottianholmes@live.com.Editor: H. Happy Friday! Sam and Emma chat with Ryan Grim, reporter at and co-founder of Drop Site News, co-host of Counter Points, to round up the week. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump's tariff flip-flops, Elon Musk's role in the Trump Administration, government job creation, the NLRB, Trump's federal fund freeze, GOP's surveilance state, US consulate shutdowns, the DOD's segregationist move, Elon's rocket fiascos, the CDC's measles rehires, TSA labor rights, and Democratic Leadership's anger over… protests against Trump? They also touch on Trump's complete confusion over fundamental immigration law amid another authoritarian power trip. Ryan Grim then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma first attempt to tackle the insanity of Trump's nonsensical economic agenda grounded in... repeated but (so far) brief stints of tariffs against our closest trade partners, looking to Greek Economist and politician Yanis Varoufakis' attempt to define Trump's economic ideology by its desire to spur US exports via economic turmoil and dollar depreciation, with this ongoing tariff war against Canada and Mexico supposedly serving to show Europe we mean business… despite it obviously making the agenda (and the man pushing it) look unserious, weak, and ineffective. After briefly touching on the possibility of this tariff scheme to serve as an repeatable pump-and-dump scam, Grim and the MR Crew dive deep into Joe Rogan's Billionaire Experience podcast, as they assess the ridiculousness of the blatant lies and wild conspiracy spread by Joe's Big Tech buddies, attacking everything from the CFPB to Frank Zappa, before shifting to some hope-inspiring GOP infighting as Elon Musk's path-of-destruction begins to haunt the cabinet faithful carrying out his orders. Wrapping up, Ryan, Sam, and Emma look to the ongoing struggle of Democratic leadership to act like an opposition party, and explore the potential of an actual challenge to the Democratic establishment. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle Al Green's killer appearance on Democracy Now! in the wake of his across-the-aisle censuring over his protest of Trump's speech to a joint Congress, and parse through the stupidity of right-wing grifters who still can't grasp the concept of taxation. Mr. Flamboyant from Sonoma County unpacks Dem messaging, Rusty from Sacramento on Rep. Ami Bera's vote to censure Al Green, Patricia from Central Coast discusses the GOP's commitment to Musk's money, and Owen, the final California caller of the day, explores pressuring progressive Dems on challenging leadership. Ben Shapiro tries to find an expired culture war to revamp his relevancy, Caleb from Arkansas touches on community gardening and mutual aid, and Misty from Washington talks about Bernie's online influence and that pesky issue of Dem messaging, plus, your calls and IMs!

Ghana has a reputation for staging some of the most eccentric funerals in the world – boasting extraordinary displays of colour, dancing, deep rooted history, and a strong association with Ghanaian royalty. Hannah Ajala takes the listener on a compelling aural journey as she uncovers the stories behind this unique and complex tradition. In West Africa, end of life celebrations are a far cry from those in the Western world. Each funeral can take weeks or months to plan and they are often more lavish – and expensive - than weddings. Funerals are an essential part of paying respect to the departed. Hannah travels to the cultural capital of the country, Kumasi, to witness a Ghanaian funeral first hand. She delves into the significance of these ancient traditions: the dancing, the dress code, the burial and final funeral rites as well as the role played by the ‘talking drums'.

Gregor Robertson, Martin Samuel and Tom Clarke take a detailed look at the performance and the changing narrative around Gareth Southgate. If you win, does it matter how you play?
