It's a return trip down the Media Path for Vicki and John and this time Bob is along for fun, games and Cowsill family lore! We welcome back Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who recently joined us to talk about their collaboration on a new album of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill, 'Long After the Fire', plus fellow founding Cowsills member, Bob Cowsill joins the conversation. We start at the dawn of Vicki's Cowsills journey, as a fan who became a friend who became a spouse. A seven-year-old, Vicki's big sister Debbi said, “You know, there's a girl your age in this band.” Vicki was instantly sold and she spent her allowance savings on the We Can Fly album. In 1977, when Vicki learned that a friend of a friend knew Bob's Cowsill, Vicki gave him a call to talk vocal harmonies. Vicki and Debbi were still bubbling under as The Bangs and they went to see The Cowsills perform at a local club. Just a few years later, Bob found himself invited to The Bangles Platinum party and John recounts his meet-cute with Vicki, right before his marriage to someone else!We test the Cowsill/Peterson crew on self-knowledge with a game we like to call 'Are You Better Informed Than Google?', Vicki and John share what took them two married decades to work together and Bob gives his perspective on John and Vicki's new album of Billy and Barry Cowsill covers.Bob and John share how their generational split affected their musical influences and experiences within the band and we hear about the earliest days of the Cowsills, their father Bud's early clash with brother Richard, performing at Brown frat parties as young kids and their first demo song recordings. And the games continue as everyone takes on some Cowsills Trivia Roulette from Becky Presley's Cowsills site!In recommendations--Fritz: Book, Miss May Does Not Exist by Carrie CourogenWeezy: Hulu Series, Devil in the FamilyPath Points of Interest:The CowsillsBecky Presley's Cowsills PageVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookBecky Presley TriviaMiss May Does Not Exist: The Live And Work Of Elaine May, Hollywood's Hidden Genius by Carrie CourogenDevil in the Family
Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who are married to each other, have been making music for many years but recently released their first album together, Long After the Fire. Peterson has been singer-songwriter-guitarist for the Bangles and Continental Drifters. John Cowsill began drumming for the Cowsills at a young age, more recently was the Beach Boys' drummer and now fills in as lead singer for the Smithereens. The new album features songs written by John's two late brothers, Bill and Barry Cowsill, and John and Vicki harmonize beautifully and, as you'll hear here, crack each other up. They recount how they decided (and occasionally tangled over) who would sing what and tell great stories too, covering Vicki's long connection with the Cowsills (which dates back to 1978) and John's cosmic if heartbreaking moment with Brian Wilson. Right on, brothers and sisters! In this righteous trip of Past 10s: A Top 10 Time Machine, cosmic cats Dave and Milt take a far-out journey back to the Billboard Top 10 hits of May 3, 1969. From Glen Campbell's heartfelt “Galveston” to the celestial vibes of “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” by The Fifth Dimension, our mellow duo raps about the stories behind the tunes, their cultural mojo, and whether they still groove today, man. ✨ They dig deep into the righteous jam “Time is Tight” by Booker T. & the M.G.'s and blow your mind with a trippy quiz on wild and woolly story songs. So tune in, turn on, and drop into some sonic bliss while the fellas lay down the good vibes and mind-expanding history from the Age of Aquarius.

You may know Peter Holsapple from his work with the great db's. Or you know him from his work with R.E.M.. Or you know him from his really great and smart songwriting. In case you don't, he's got a new record out, so you can get to know him. The Face of 68, is available right now wherever you get your records. For more information, you can follow Peter on Instagram.
"Face Of 68" The Connecticut-born Peter Holsapple isn't hiding his age--his new album Face Of 68 proudly blares it in its title and though the 68 is representative of his current chronology, like our old friend Billy Bragg, he knows that number is a temporary thing and another waits in front of it. So, to honor this moment in his life, Holsapple's third solo album is a celebration of a year in a man's life and it couldn't sound more life-affirming. The d.B.'s frontman, whose output with that beloved outfit include classics like Stand For Decibels and Like This remain timeless classics, is one of music's busiest characters. Here's a quick and partial glance at his rock and roll resume': In the late-'80s, he was a full-time fifth member of R.E.M., He was an auxillary member of Hootie and the Blowfish for nearly 30 years, he was in the indie pop supergroup the Continental Drifters with members of The Bangles, The Dream Syndicate and The Cowsills, and he's currently playing with The Paranoid Style, the reformed d.B.'s and solo shows on his own. Holsapple's Face Of 68 is one of 2025's very best; a smoldering batch of songs that are filled with jangle, shimmer and stomp, Holsapple and his power trio of Robert Sledge of the Ben Folds Five and Rob Ladd of The Connells, play with confidence and nerve. This is a dynamic album with heavy grooves, pop hooks and melodic muscle and the fact of the matter is The Face Of 68 has never sounded better. www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) Stereo Embers: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com) IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast

Two artists who have left an indelible mark on American music are, in actual fact, a married couple with a brand new album on the verge of dropping. The Bangles' Vicki Peterson and The Cowsills' John Cowsill join us! Differences between these two abound: New England vs. Southern California origins, 60s family pop vs. 80s girl-band rock, drums vs. guitar; but the parallels are even more striking....Both Vicki and John were raised by Top 40 Radio, they began performing very young and played in extraordinarily influential bands with their siblings. And so importantly, they share the honor of touching audiences with music that became lifetime soundtracks. Their new collaborative album, 'Long After the Fire' (including the about-to-drop-on-March 21st-single, 'Is Anybody Here') features covers of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill. It was an uphill battle to acquire the rights to license the music, but thanks to Vicki's tenacity and their producer's rich industry knowledge, Vicki and John have leaned the expanse of their talent and exquisite harmonies into this very personal project.Vicki tells us about her rock stardom ride with the Bangles and John shares his early worries that having entered professional show biz at the age of seven, his career chose him and therefore the subsequent attention often felt embarrassing. We also talk about, 'Family Band: The Cowsills Story', a documentary that Weezy made about the Cowsills. We discuss John's time with the Beach Boys, Vicki's collaborations with her sister-in-law, Susan Cowsill and Vicki and John give each other the business with the well-earned nicknames, ‘Child Star' and ‘Rock Star'. Plus, we have a round of IMDB Roulette for the ages and an exclusive, in-studio performance!Path Points of InterestVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki Peterson and John Cowsill on YoutubeA Thousand Times Video Vicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiJoey's SongVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookNorman's Rare Guitars DocumentaryViet Nam: The Way That Changed America - Apple TV

To put it bluntly without Artie Kornfeld there would have never been a famous musical family called The Cowsills on any charts anywhere no matter how good we were. Artie was the key to it all. Artie Kornfeld is way more than his Woodstock legacy indicates and The Cowsills were an early success for this amazing artist in his own right. Sit back and listen to this rock historian talk about a lot of this 'other stuff' - in fact we got to talking about so much stuff we never got to Woodstock....so next week we will have 'Artie Kornfeld-the Woodstock episode'....enjoy!!

Susan Cowsill was the kid sister of the family band the Cowsills, and she made an indelible impression singing “and spaghetti'd!” on the Cowsills' 1968 hit version of “Hair.” Jump to the 1990s, and she was singing and, for the first time, writing songs in the indie supergroup the Continental Drifters, which also included her friend Vicki Peterson of the Bangles and Peter Holsapple of the dB's. With the Drifters having a resurgence with a new book and compilations—and with Susan still performing with the Cowsills and on her own—she takes us on a lively tour of her long, colorful career. Did she want to join the family band at age 7? How close did the Cowsills get to starring on The Partridge Family? How is singing other people's songs "like having an amusement park in your body?" And can we expect new Continental Drifters music?
The Cowsills evoke a certain time and place, but, as artists, they've continued to grow and develop their voices. And, when they decided to make a record together in the early 90's, they knew it would be the next step in their evolution. However, it didn't exactly work out that way. But now, Global, is coming out widely, available to everyone. For more information, you can check out the group's website, or follow them on Facebook.
Staci's guest is Susan Cowsill, the legendary vocalist known for being a child singing star in The Cowsills, her family's chart-topping group that actually inspired the 1970s TV sitcom The Partridge Family. Susan discusses the brand new book about her other long-running supergroup, The Continental Drifters on this episode, plus she remembers being on the music scene in L.A. in the 1970s (in fact, her “rock and roll nightmare” involves none other than The Runaways' svengali, Kim Fowley!), moving to New Orleans and learning to love jazz, bidding farewell to Kris Kristofferson, and much more.
In the '90s, a group of legendary rock and pop artists banded together, blending inspirations, genres, influences and styles to form a uniquely collaborative sound. The Bangles, The Cowsills, REM, The dBs, and Hootie And The Blowfish were all represented in The Continental Drifters. Author and musician Sean Kelly has written the definitive Drifters tomb, White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story and he joins us this week, along with iconic Drifter Peter Holsapple, to take us on a journey from Hollywood to New Orleans, in the late 90s, through the rich layers of alternative, folk, California pop and Americana that shaped the remarkable story of this legacy mega-group.We kick off the show with comedian and Emmy winning comedy writer Brian Kiley, who shares his experiences in the writing trenches with Conan O'Brien and Ellen DeGeneres. Brian joins us fresh from his experiences performing overseas for the U.S. military and recording his Dry Bar Comedy special. Brian will be opening soon for Fritz at The El Portal Theater in North Hollywood!Sean and Peter then offer a Continental Drifters deep dive into their origin story, their musical heritages and their founding members, including New Orleans legend, Carlo Nuccio who inspired the band's move from a weekly residency at Raji's in Hollywood to one at Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans. The Drifters quickly ascended from a supergroup to a force of nature.Peter talks about his time with R.E.M. and Hootie and the Blowfish, Sean and Peter give us an in depth look at the band's inner wiring and how their on-stage chemistry met with conflicting ingredients in the studio. The beating heart of The Drifters was always the personal bonds and when the romantic energy within the group began to shift, just like within any family, the entire group was thrown off balance.Sean and Peter relay their frustration with their record label's confusion as to how to market The Drifters, what members were seeking in contrast to their previous industry experiences, what inspired Sean to write the book, why Vermillion is Peter's favorite Drifters album and details about the brand new tribute album featuring Drifters songs performed by 25 artists including Marshall Crenshaw, Debbi Peterson and John Cowsill!Plus, Weezy is recommending, the MSNBC doc, From Russia With Lev and Fritz is looking ahead with 'What's Next? Hello friends! Musician and author of White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story, Sean Kelley and Continental Drifter and Guitar player of The Bangles, Vicki Peterson are my guests for episode 1428. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Susan Cowsill reflects on her musical journey, from her time with the Continental Drifters to growing up as The post Susan Cowsill – Continental Drifters, The Cowsills appeared first on The Strange Brew .
This goofy confection of Sunshine Pop was so at odds with the popular music of the day that it seemed doomed from the start. The Dedrick family, (Chris, Sandy, Bruce, Ellen, and Stephanie), were so unhip that the classical-jazz compositional genius of Chris Dedrick and the sublime sibling harmonies on display were incomprehensible to the rock intelligentsia. (There were The Cowsills, of course…but….) For God's sake, The Free Design were produced by Enoch Light, of all people - ( I always loved that name) - my dad's “Easy Listening” guru; it was the music he had on in the background when he did his weekend paperwork. They only existed as a group from '67-'72, after which Chris pursued an award winning, film composing and arranging career in Canada. And, here's where the trajectory of this esoteric ditty arcs interestingly: their only charting song, Kites Are Fun barely peaked at 114 on the “bubbling under the hot 100” list, after which the group plummeted to obscurity. But, later, much later, like an excavated Paleolithic fossil, their catalogue was uncovered in the 1990's, and reissued by Trattoria, a Japanese record label. Since then, this tune has been lauded, covered extensively, TikTok'ed, and featured in numerous tv commercials and shows. And, now, no one can deny that kites are most assuredly fun.
Sean Kelly & Mark Walton are this episode's guests. Sean is the author of White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story, the authorized biography of the Continental Drifters due September 27th. Mark is the band's bassist and founding member. The book follows ten disparate musicians from humble beginnings at a dive bar residency in Los Angeles through lineup changes, addiction, marriages, divorces, and industry letdowns. Hi folks this week we are visiting the family band COMPASS who hail from Canton, Ohio. They are 16 yr old Arianna and her 2 younger brothers Harrison on guitar (ahead of his time he's so good) and Johnny their 10 year old drummer (who started drumming at age 7 sound familiar anyone?) and then Constantine who will be playing keyboards when he gets a little older. Of course we felt we were interviewing a younger version of The Cowsills...it was awesome. Enjoy and please support this great family. Next week another great guest thanks so much everybody!

From Chat GPT to debates over the use of A.I. to bring deceased actors back into movies or de-age older characters like Harrison Ford in the most recent "Indiana Jones" movie, the technology is here to stay. What do you think of when A.I. comes to mind? What would you do with it when it comes to the entertainment in your life? In this week's episode, co-hosts Bruce Miller and Terry Lipshetz talk about A.I. in movies in TV, and how it could be used in the future as a pair of new shows on the topic: “A.I. Butch Patrick Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson What a fun chat with Butch Patrick, aka Eddie Munster, who's warm, easy and so comfortable in his skin that it's impossible to not feel like an old friend coming home. Butch makes everyone in his path feel seen, heard, and important. What a gift. We talked about current events… living in Arkansas, his Munster Mobiles, getting out and meeting his fans, his girlfriend, how they met, and how they keep it going. And we went back… how a 7 yr old got his start in film, had a career in TV, and at the age of 10, a starring role on one of the most iconic and endearing television shows of all time. Thank goodness Bill Mumy took a pass. There are no accidents. This was Butch's path. We talked Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis, Yvonne De Carlo, The Cowsills, and The Monkees, and his amazing episode and time shooting with them at the height of all of their fame. There were crazy days and trouble. Pot, booze, and drugs, and then, 13 years ago, getting sober. Butch's ease and commitment to his sobriety, and helping others. It's a beautiful thing. The upside of the pandemic is that it led the way to interview celebrity gems who live far away. I hope one day to meet Butch in the reals and feel his great energy sans a screen between us, but I'm grateful as hell for these opportunities to spend time getting to know this once boy who gave this girl so much childhood joy, and as a man, moves through the world with so much kindness and grace. Happy new episode everybody. This week's guest, Marc Nathan, takes us in to the world of the A&R position at a record company. Marc was the guy who signed artists to labels, the A&R guy. He would scour for new music and new talent and play a role in bringing it all to the public. But the story within this amazing accounting was when Marc went to bat for The Cowsills and paid a dear price. Wait until you hear Marc's recounting of the memorable meeting he had with Doug Morris of Atlantic Records regarding The Cowsills and the songs from "Global". You won't believe it!!!
