Over the course of history, human nature hasn't changed a great deal, but culture and institutions are another story. And a key way of explaining those l shifts in history is through the lens of evolutionary economics.Geoffrey Hodgson is a professor at Loughborough University and has written numerous books including Darwin's Conjecture: The Search for General Principles of Social and Economic Evolution and How Economics Forgot History: The Problem of Historical Specificity in Social Science. His work examines the crucial role economics plays in explaining the history of everything.Geoffrey and Greg discuss the evolution of legal and financial institutions, why traditional economic theories, like general equilibrium models, don't quite pan out when explaining complex social systems, and how the key to finding a general theory for the social sciences may be Darwinism.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:On the theory of firm33:04: Our argument is really, firms are historically specific. Human cooperation in production is back to the primates. We've banded together and hunted things together, but they aren't necessarily firms in the sense that business school students understand firms or want to apply that knowledge to understanding how firms operate. So we do have teams, groups, and hunting bands in different species, but the firm is something more. It's something long-lasting as mechanisms, which means it can outlive the lives of everyone within it—all employees, all owners, all shareholders—it can all be outlived by the firm. We have several firms which have literally existed for hundreds of years, and that's really important.Focusing on the systems behind the memes25:19: Rather than arguing about the definition of the meme, I think look more concretely at the psychological, organizational, legal, and other cultural rule systems that are involved.Collateralization is also a very old concept, but it's underdeveloped46:44: Mortgage is an old word. I mean, with the pawnbroker shop, they had pawnbroker shops in ancient Rome, so if you had a gold ring or something, you put it in, and that's a form of collateralization. You deposit the ring, a good bit of gold, you get the money out, and then you either repay it and get the gold back or you use the money. You don't. So collateralization is also a very old concept, but it's underdeveloped. Is the issue with business people using evolutionary metaphors a lack of precision? 20:13: Precision isn't everything. It's important. I would emphasize conceptual precision because often when people say we need more precision, they go off and try and build a mathematical model, but then they assume out of some of the problems and difficulties that were there at the beginning that the discussion about what should be done in terms of research is ruled out.Show Links:Recommended Resources:General equilibrium theoryGame theoryJohn DeweyThorstein VeblenThe Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins Adam SmithRonald CoaseOliver WiliamsonAlchian and DemsetzViolence and Social Orders: A Conceptual Framework for Interpreting Recorded Human History by Douglass C. Monotropism is a powerful description of a narrowed field of attention and interests that, for many, explains much of the autistic experience. Fergus Murray (they/them) shares about this topic both from personal experience, and as the child of Dinah Murray, one of the people who developed the term and theory.Healing from neurodivergent burnout requires understanding your monotropic brain and avoiding monotropic split as much as possible. And fun fact, as Fergus points out: in the original validation study, AuDHD people were the most monotropic! The title reflects both monotropism as an excellent theory about potentially multiple neurodivergences, as well as the tendency of monotropic people to end up seeing connections between diverse fields.Mentioned in episode:Fergus's website: oolong.co.ukMonotropism QuestionnaireAutism and Mental Health free course (free for first 90 days)Connect with Fergus & learn more about monotropism:Fergus's LinkTree: https://linktr.ee/0olongMonotropism: https://monotropism.orgResources:Like Your Brain community spaceResources Blog & Contact FormTranscript DocEmail Newsletter Hosted on Acast. We do things a little different this time by discussing our philosophy towards film criticism and film more broadly. We also discuss the importance (or unimportance) of the artist's intent, how much we weigh the ideology of the film, and whether or not attempting to review films objectively is even possible.

Our mission as an assembly is threefold: - To Exalt the Saviour! Eph. 3:21 - To Edify the Saints! Eph. 4:16 - To Evangelize the Sinners! Lk 24:47 What we believe about the Scriptures: We believe that the scriptures of both Old and New Testament are verbally inspired of God, that they are the supreme and final authority for faith and practice, and are preserved in the Authorized Version (KJV 1611) of the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16. Psalm 12:6-7. What we believe about God: We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. That God is supreme in His person, absolute in His attributes, glorious in His perfection, and eternal in His being. 1 John 5:7. What we believe about Jesus: We believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ. His conception by the Holy Spirit, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His death on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, His bodily resurrection, His exaltation at God's right hand, and His personal imminent, pre-millennial, and pre-tribulation return. Matthew 1:20. 2 Corinthians 1:21. Ephesians 1:7. Luke 24:6, 39. 1 Timothy 2:5. What we believe about Holy Spirit: We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, one with the Father and the Son, the indweller of every believer to enlighten, guide, and enable him in life, testimony, and service, and seal each believer until the day of redemption of the body. John 15:26. John 14:7 What we believe about man: We believe that God created man in His image and likeness (a triune being: spirit, soul, and body) in a state of innocence's, but through temptation, he willingly transgressed, became dead in trespasses and sins. As a result, his posterity (all men) inherited a corrupt nature, are born in sin, and are under condemnation. Genesis 1:26. Psalm 51:5. Romans 5:12.

“Life is a game. There's no way to understand the human world without first understanding this. Everyone alive is playing a game whose hidden rules are built into us and that silently directs our thoughts, beliefs and actions. This game is inside us. It is us. We can't help but play.” So begins “The Status Game,” a new book by acclaimed writer Will Storr. He continues: “We play for status, if only subtly, with every social interaction, every contribution we make to work, love or family life and every internet post. We play with how we dress, how we speak and what we believe. … Life is not a journey towards a perfect destination. It's a game that never ends. And it's the very worst of us.” Does it have to be? We may not be able to quit the status game, but Will says we can learn to play it better. In this episode, he explains how. --- Download The Next Big Idea app today at nextbigideaclub.com/app/

In this episode, we welcome John Lennox to the show. He is a Christian apologist, mathematician, and bioethicist from Northern Ireland. He is the author of many books including Can Science Explain Everything?, Seven Days That Divide the World, Gunning for God, and God's Undertaker. He has done numerous high-profile public debates with noted atheist thinkers like Richard Dawkins, Michael Shermer, Peter Singer, and the late Christopher Hitchens. Additionally, he is an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, an Emeritus Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College - Oxford University, an Associate Fellow of the Saïd Business School, and a Senior Fellow at the Trinity Forum. In this interview, we discuss what it was like growing up in Northern Ireland during the sectarian violence between Protestants and Catholics, the difference between “science” and “scientism”, why Christians shouldn't be scared of science, how he prepares for debates with noted atheists, what he thinks is the most compelling arguments for Christianity, his thoughts on Old Earth vs. Young Earth, his thoughts on manhood in the church, why we should worship God with our minds and not just rely on feelings, and much more. The physical geography of countries, mountains, rivers, lakes, coastlines etc largely dictate the political decisions of their leaders. We tend to overlook those critical facts when conflicts arise. And no country is as much a victim of its flawed geography as Russia. On the other hand, few nations are as advantaged by their geography as the United States. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/james-herlihy/message

Douglas Kenrick is a professor in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University. His research interests include integrating models from evolutionary biology and cognitive science to study the effects of fundamental social motivations on basic cognitive processes. Among Kenrick's many publications are the books "Sex, Murder and the Meaning of Life" and "Social Psychology," a textbook coauthored with Steven Neuberg and Robert Cialdini. We're talking about dating and mating in this episode, touching on topics like the divide between natural and social sciences, micro theories, loss aversion and the history of dating ads.Episode QuotesStimulus control:I think by understanding that we're designed in a way that doesn't match the modern world, we can basically engage in what behaviorists used to call stimulus control. If I take the stimulus away, it's a lot easier. Achieving goals: Of course we're not designed to be happy, right? We're designed to do things that will promote the replication of our genes. And so as soon as we reach one goal, BOOM! Our brain says, all right, what's next? Dating apps possibly changing the way we mate:So you're still seeing in those apps, you're still seeing the regular old stuff play out. But it might be that, yes, they're changing our adaptation level. They're changing this, our expectation of what we can get, that we start to want everything and we're unhappy with our options.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at Arizona State UniversityProfessional Profile at Psychology TodayDouglas Kenrick on LinkedinDouglas Kenrick on TwitterHis work:Douglas Kenrick on Google ScholarSex, Murder, and the Meaning of Life: A Psychologist Investigates How Evolution, Cognition, and Complexity are Revolutionizing our View of Human NatureSocial Psychology: Goals in InteractionThe Rational Animal: How Evolution Made Us Smarter Than We Think

Ever wondered why you are here on this Earth? What is your true identity? Is there a big purpose for life? In this episode, we invite Intuitive Astrologer Murphy MacCanless to share with us how Intuitive Astrology and Tarot Card Reading has helped her answer the big questions in life. Driven by a curiosity to understand human nature, Murphy has been using her gifts to connect people with their highest selves. Tune in to find out how she uses trauma to transform people, her reading processes, as well as how she discovered her love and passion for Astrology! KEY POINTS / MAIN TAKEAWAYS: What does an Intuitive Astrologer and Tarot Reader do? Murphy's journey in Intuitive Astrology. The relationship between Individual and Astrology. Facing and healing from your traumas. The Tarot Card Reading process. Murphy's Intuitive Astrology methods. QUOTABLES: “I always have had this drive to try to understand why people do what they do and what motivates them and astrology is perfect for that. Because when it's applied in its highest practice, it teaches us how to understand ourselves deeper and then to see other perspectives that we otherwise wouldn't possibly know how to comprehend.” “When you have a whole lot of deep trauma, you can't really be intuitive in your life, let alone in anyone else's. Because that trauma sort of stacks itself on top of your intuition and cuts you off from it. And so the more you deny that trauma, the more you deny that pain, the more you are denying access to that higher part of yourself.” PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: Visit Murphy's website at https://www.murphytalks.com/ Follow Murphy on Instagram @murphytalks - https://www.instagram.com/murphytalks/ Listen to the Conscious and Chill podcast: Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zNTczODY2Yy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw== Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1rniFdCUx5317NTzBASWOP Follow Wendy on social media and share the love! Listen and subscribe at www.JustProWrestlingNews.com I'm Matt Carlins and this is JUST Pro Wrestling News for Sunday, February 21, 2021. This update is brought to you by IndyWrestling.us. Results from Saturday night's Bloodsport 5 show are straight ahead in this update but first... WWE is closing a significant chapter in its history as it presents Elimination Chamber tonight. Two matches will be held inside the Chamber itself. Drew McIntyre defends the WWE Championship against Randy Orton, AJ Styles, Kofi Kingston, Jeff Hardy and Sheamus, who will be the final man to enter the Chamber. He earned that right by winning a gauntlet match on last Monday's Raw - pinning McIntyre to seal the win. The Chamber match from SmackDown has Kevin Owens, Cesaro, Daniel Bryan, Jey Uso, King Corbin and Sami Zayn battling for a Universal Title match against Roman Reigns later in the show. Also announced for tonight - Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax defend the women's tag team titles against Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair. Plus, Bobby Lashley defends the U.S. Title in a 3-way against Keith Lee and Riddle. WWE's website is still listing a Raw Women's Title match between Asuka and Lacey Evans. Though that would seem to be impossible since Evans announced on Monday's Raw that she's pregnant. In the United States, this is the final pay per view on the current incarnation of the WWE Network. Peacock takes over the exclusive streaming rights to WWE Network in the U.S. on March 18. The first pay per view of The Peacock Era is Fastlane on March 21st. Adam Cole tweeted Saturday that he'll “explain everything” on Wednesday's NXT...and he added “it's a lot more than just “why”...” Also, William Regal says he's raising the stakes for the match between Karrion Kross and Santos Escobar on NXT. It'll now be a No Disqualification Match. If Escobar is a no-show, he'll be stripped of his Cruiserweight Championship and suspended. (STINGER: New Japan) More unwelcome news from New Japan's Castle Attack tour. IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champ Hiromu Takahashi was pulled from Saturday's Road To show. New Japan announced he suffered a shoulder injury during the main event of Friday's show. Takahashi is still on the card for Monday's show. New Japan has officially pulled Tetsuya Naito from Monday's show. He's been sidelined since he suffered a knee injury on last Tuesday's show. Naito is still scheduled to challenge Kota Ibushi for the IWGP Intercontinental Title a week from today. In case you missed this news...The Road To Castle Attack show originally scheduled for this morning was canceled due to earthquake damage to the arena where it was to be held. CIMA is the new ALL Japan World Jr. Heavyweight Champion. He dethroned Koji Iwamoto on Saturday. Jon Moxley and Josh Barnett will clash at “Bloodsport 6”...during WrestleMania week in Tampa. The announcement came at the end of Saturday night's Bloodsport 5 show...after Mox beat Davey Boy Smith Jr. in the main event. That's JUST Pro Wrestling News for Sunday, February 21. Our next update comes your way tomorrow morning, so be sure to subscribe to this feed. We also thank you in advance for leaving a glowing rating or review.. I'm Matt Carlins.
