With tensions running high in the Middle East, President Trump on Friday said Iranian leaders had not yet reached a deal with the US to end the ongoing war. President Trump has insisted that he's in no rush to make a deal, and that he doesn't care about how the ongoing war could impact the midterms. At the same time, fighting between Israel and Hezbollah is showing little sign of slowing down, despite attempts by the Trump administration to broker a cease-fire between the two. These conflicts have sounded the alarm in Europe, especially in countries like Cyprus, where dealing with the fallout from these crises has become a key part of the national debate. This was the climate that Cyprus recently held parliamentary elections in, elections that saw anti-establishment parties gain ground. These elections can be seen as a benchmark of trends ahead of the upcoming 2028 presidential election. Meanwhile, a major tourist development project in Albania, with links to Jared Kushner, has become the focus of protests and political controversy that is even pulling Greece into the story. Local residents, including many ethnic Greeks living in the area, have expressed concerns about the project, with issues ranging from transparency and environmental concerns to long running disputes over property rights. Aaron David Miller, Nektaria Stamouli, and Yannis Papadopoulos join Thanos Davelis to explore the wider ramifications of the ongoing war with Iran and the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon, look at the latest parliamentary elections in Cyprus, and turn our attention to an evolving story in Albania, where a planned billion dollar tourist project is at the heart of controversy and protests that has had a spillover effect into Greek-Albanian relations. Taking us to our “I am HALC” segment, we're highlighting one of HALC's earliest members and a member of its first flagship Leadership 2030 team in Chicago, Peter Kourkouvis. An attorney making a name for himself in real estate law, he's also playing an integral role in putting Greek culture - from the arts to music - in the spotlight in Chicago, setting up major tribute concerts dedicated to Rebetiko music, Mikis Theodorakis, and Manos Hatzidakis. A little more info on our guests: Aaron David Miller is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and expert on the Middle East. Nektaria Stamouli is the deputy editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition and Politico's Eastern Mediterranean correspondent. Yannis Papadopoulos is a journalist with Kathimerini. On this episode of The Brian Crombie Hour, host Brian Crombie is joined by Bill Fatsis (Vasilios Fatsis)—retired Justice of the Peace, former federal candidate, community leader, and author of Not Looking for Trouble—for a powerful conversation on immigration, identity, politics, and the meaning of multiculturalism in Canada. Bill shares his remarkable journey from being born during the Greek Civil War, losing his father at a young age, and being separated from his family, to arriving in Toronto in 1966 and building a life through education, public service, politics, and community leadership. His story reflects resilience, sacrifice, and starting over in a new country. The discussion also explores his activism against the Greek military junta in the 1960s and 1970s, including organizing demonstrations in Toronto, engaging in Canadian political life, and running in the historic 1982 Toronto-Danforth by-election. He also reflects on working within the Bill Davis government and how multiculturalism in Canada has evolved over time. The conversation further touches on the legacy of composer Mikis Theodorakis—known for Zorba the Greek and Serpico—and how music can become a form of memory, identity, and resistance. At its core, the episode asks a deeper question: what does multiculturalism truly mean in Canada today?

Juli 1925 gebuer. Haut ass hien als Komponist, Schrëftsteller a Politiker bekannt. Iwwer 96 Joer, an deenen de Museker Mikis Theodorakis lieft, entstinn iwwer 1.000 Kompositiounen an 1964 duerch de Film “Alexis Sorbas”, de Museksgenre Sirtaki. Mat senger Kompositioun gëtt hien zu engem weltwäite Phenomeen. De Mikis Theodorakis engagéiert sech net just an der Musek, mee och fir d'Fräiheete vun all eenzelen. Hie setzt sech géint Drogen, d'Nationalsozialisten an den Terrorismus an a kämpft fir d'Gerechtegkeet op Landesniveau, wéi och fir d'Kulturzeen. The opposition leader is dead, clubbed in the city square for all to see – and the ruling dictatorship does everything it can, which is literally everything, to deny responsibility. Z is a fictional account of the real, state-conducted assassination of a Greek leftist politician, but its satire achieves a degree of incisiveness rarely seen in the modern political thriller. By showing the audience the planning, execution, and cover-up, Z is less about the mystery and more about the mechanics of dictatorial hegemony: With the crime plain as day, the plot follows the denial, coercion, censorship, retaliation, and suppression they leverage to pretend their power is still in the shadows. In his conversation with Nathalie Lamprecht, Alan Gilsenan discusses his documentary film The Laughing Boy (2022), which tries to uncover how the song The Laughing Boy, written by a young Brendan Behan and later used in his play The Hostage, travelled via Paris to Greece and there became an anthem of defiance for the Greek left. Gilsenan discusses the circumstances that facilitated this process; the importance of translation and the way the documentary draws attention to it; the image of Behan as a kind of James Dean that obscures his talent as a writer; and Brendan Behan's collaboration with theatre director Joan Littlewood.

“Teach me to dance!” Professor Vrasidas Karalis of Sydney University, and renowned conductor/composer, George Ellis join the boys in the Distillery for a drink and a chat about one of – if not the most – iconic modern Greek texts, “Zorba the Greek”. From the original book by Nikos Kazantzakis, to the 1964 film starring Anthony Quinn, Alana Bates and Irene Pappas, to the incredible music of Mikis Theodorakis, Zorba has become a part of Greek culture and for many non-Greeks, was their introduction to Greece. Professor Karalis and Ellis provide insightful commentary, informed by having met key members of the cast and crew of the film, resulting in one of the more incredible and in-depth Ouzo Talk discussions. With returning bouzouki experts, Peter Apostolidis and George Calopedos also on board for the ride, the boys dive deeper into the world of Greek music than ever before, only this time, we have our very own legend as our guide.*A note to our non-Greek-speaking listeners:Ouzo Talk is first and foremost an English-speaking podcast, however this particular episode is delivered primarily in Greek as unfortunately, our featured special guest is unable to speak English. Émission autour de Maurice DURUFLÉ, Arthur HONEGGER & Mikis THÉODORAKIS
Earlier this month, Greece lost one of the most emblematic figures of its modern era, composer Mikis Theodorakis, who died on September 2 at the age of 96.Theodorakis was a multi-talented and multi-faceted figure who left his mark due to his radical politics and public interventions as well as his ground-breaking music, which blended Greek popular sounds with classic elements. On this show, we take a closer look at the influence of this prolific, towering figure. Phoebe Fronista speaks to Dr Panos Stavrianides, an entrepreneur, educator and active member of the Greek American diaspora about the impact Theodorakis's music and political stance had on him and other Greeks living abroad. Also, Nick Malkoutzis speaks to Dimitris A. Sotiropoulos, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Athens and senior research fellow at the ELIAMEP think-tank, about what impact Theodorakis had on the public sphere and shaping modern Greece's identity. Their discussion also touches on whether the composer's passing marks the end of the public intellectual in Greece, and whether this matters. This episode also is interspersed with Theodrakis's music, much of which is played by the Mandragoras group in Frankfurt, Germany and Achilleas and Nino Anastasiades.Mandragoras: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mandragoras.hannover/Achilleas and Nino Anastasiades: https://www.youtube.com/user/achanast/featuredMore background on TheodorakisBBC documentary by Maria Margaronis: Mikis Theodorakis Remembered: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct2ptyThe Guardian obituary by Gail Holst-Warhaft: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/sep/02/mikis-theodorakis-obituaryMikis, a Greek for all by Nikos Konstandaras: https://www.ekathimerini.com/opinion/1167289/mikis-a-greek-for-all/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In today's episode, the rollout of the third dose of the anti-Covid-19 vaccines is due to start at nursing homes all over Cyprus. Meanwhile, the island mourns the death of legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis and traffic at the two airports has finally gained some steam. All this and more in today's episode.
From popular songs to great poets. Sofka meets Lysandros Falireas, founder of the fusion band Imam Baildi. They unpack how the Asia Minor refugees of 1922 established rembetika (or ‘Greek blues') in Athens. The celebrated singer Elly Paspala discusses her collaboration with two of the greatest Greek composers: Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Xatzidakis and how they used poetry from Nobel-prize-winning Greek poets. Former UK Ambassador, John Kittmer, reveals his deep love for the poet Yiannis Ritsos who collaborated with Theodorakis when both were imprisoned by the Junta. Finally, translator and bicycle tour guide Joshua Barley dives into why dimotika traditional village ‘folk' songs are so popular in Athens.
