This is a super fun episode where we welcome Mark Gabot, DNP, CRNA, FAANA on the show as a cohost. Mark and Jeremy presented at the 2023 AANA Annual Congress in Seattle and recorded this episode at the same time. Jeremy and Mark talk about how we think during a crisis, the unconscious biases that exist and they focus on a cognitive template for crisis management that can help formulate a working diagnosis of the perioperative problem, and then zero in on appropriate management. They also have some fun with some guests in the audience and invite them up on stage to talk more about their areas of expertise. Jeremy and Mark first invite one of the authors of the published Cognitive Template article (Lisa Osborne-Smith, PhD, CRNA, FAANA) up on stage to talk more about the utilization of the template. They next invite the Cormac O'Sullivan, PhD, CRNA, ARBP, FAANA to talk about simulated crises at the AANA Annual Congress. Finally, they invite both Sharon Pearce, DNP, CRNA, FAANA and Jeremy Stanley, EA, CFP®, AIF® up on stage to talk about the origins of the Beyond the Mask Podcast. Here are some of the things we'll discuss in this episode: How we develop our own mental model of what to follow in terms of treating a patient. The two modes of thinking when we make rapid decisions. The research on cognitive errors and biases. Background on the cognitive template article from Oregon Health & Science University. Simulation training with Dr. Cormac O'Sullivan. Background on the Beyond the Mask Podcast and how it got started. When writing code, test driven development is a common accepted methodology to ensure the development of high quality software. Your organization's data, on the other hand, is an entirely different challenge. Data can be missing due to human error, a failure with a 3rd party provider, a botched release, or dozens of other issues. Data quality control is a requirement for being able to trust the various reports and machine learning models that are relying on the information that you curate. Rules based systems are useful for validating known requirements, but with the scale and complexity of data in modern organizations it is impractical, and often impossible, to manually create rules for all potential errors. The team at Anomalo are building a machine learning powered platform for identifying and alerting on anomalous and invalid changes in your data so that you aren't flying blind. In this episode founders Elliot Shmukler and Jeremy Stanley explain how they have architected the system to work with your data warehouse and let you know about the critical issues hiding in your data without overwhelming you with alerts.

Did you know that (almost) every year, mysterious fire shoots out from the tomb where Jesus was buried? Yeah... neither did I. Not only is Eastern Orthodoxy the most ancient Tradition of Christianity, it also continues to be one of the fastest growing. But despite this fact, the Eastern Orthodox Church & it's practices remain a mystery to most Protestant & Evangelical Christians. One of the greatest mysteries in the Orthodox Tradition is the ancient celebration of the Holy Fire, which takes places annually on Holy Saturday in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. (This is the site where they believe Christ was crucified & buried.) One of my best friends in the world, Jeremy Stanley, a world-traveling photographer & videographer, went to Jerusalem this past Holy Week & experienced the Holy Fire ceremony first-hand. But his journey towards the flame was not without great trial & conflict. _________________________________ Jeremy Stanley - @jeremystanley For photos from his trip to Jerusalem, check out his Instagram: @jeremystanley http://jeremystanley.tv To learn more about Eastern Orthodox Christianity, check out the following resources: – HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH podcast: "Orthodoxy, with an Eastern Flavor" – "The Orthodox Way" by Bishop Kallistos Ware Music: “Song of Every Soul” by Young Oceans “Christos Anesti” by Petros Gaitanos “Thin Place (Abbreviated)” by Tony Anderson Edited & produced by Chad Michael Snavely (http://chadmichael.com) For more info on art, liturgy & projection technology, visit my site: http://illuminate.us
2016 was quite the year. So much that I flew all the way to England over New Years to meet up with some close friends, just so we could put up in some small, old pubs & vent about all that's taken place in the past year. One of the pubs we went to was The Eagle & Child in Oxford. The Eagle & Child has been home to some of the most fascinating & inspiring conversations between artists & writers such as C.S. Lewis, JRR Tolkien & their misfit band of "Inklings." While we are far from Inkling-status, we still thought it would be fun to hang out with their ghosts & partake in a somewhat riveting conversation about the status of the world's craziness. Luckily, I brought my podcast mic along. Enjoy. ___________________________________ SHOW NOTES Tom Read: @tom_read + http://chariotsmusic.com Jeremy Stanley: @jeremystanley + http://jeremystanley.tv Theme Music by Thad Kopec & Mason Self Produced & Edited by Chad Michael Snavely
