Learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time—often just one baby step at a time—and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world. The Daffodil Principle《水仙花法则》Several times my daughter had telephoned me to say, "Dad, you must come to see the daffodils before they are over. "I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. I will come next Tuesday, "I promised, a little reluctantly, after her third call.“那我下周二去吧。” Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I reluctantly drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house, I was welcomed by the joyful sounds of happy children. I delightedly hugged and greeted my grandchildren. Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the clouds and fog, there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see badly enough to drive another inch! 这世上除了你和这些孩子,没有什么能让我为想去看他们再开一步车了!”My daughter smiled calmly and said, "We drive in this all the time, dad."女儿平静地笑着说:“爸爸,我们一直都在这种天气里开车 的呀!”"Well, you won't get me back on the road until it clears, and then I'm heading for home! "I told her.“那反正你甭想让我再开车上路了,除非天晴了,然后我就直接开车回家!” But first we're going to see the daffodils. It's just a few blocks," Carolyn said. "I'll drive. I'm used to this."“但首先我们要去看水仙花。 Carolyn," I said, "please turn around."“卡罗琳,”说,“请你掉头回去。”"It's all right, dad, I promise. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience."“没事的,爸爸,我保证。 After about 20 minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read, Daffodil Garden. We got out of the car and each took a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, as we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight. It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it over the mountain peak and its surrounding slopes. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns, great ribbons and swathes of deep orange, creamy white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, and saffron and butter yellow. Each different-colored variety was planted in large groups so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue. There were five acres of flowers. Who did this?" I asked Carolyn. Just one woman," Carolyn answered. "She lives on the property. That's her home." Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house, small and modestly sitting in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio, we saw a poster, said, "Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking”, that was the headline.“就一个女人,”卡罗琳回答, “她就以这片花为生。 The first answer was a simple one. "50,000 bulbs," it read. The second answer was, "One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain." The third answer was, "Began in 1958." For me, that moment was a life-changing experience. I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, whom more than 35 years before, had begun—one bulb at a time—to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountain top. Planting one bulb at a time, year after year, this unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. One day at a time, she had created something of extraordinary magnificence, beauty, and inspiration. The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration. That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time—often just one baby step at a time—and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world. It makes me sad in a way," I admitted to Carolyn. " What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five or forty years ago and had worked away at it ‘one bulb at a time' through all those years? Just think what I might have been able to achieve!"“ 这让我在某种意义上有点丧气。” 想想我到底能做成什么!”My daughter summed up the message of the day in her usual direct way. "Start tomorrow," she said. She was right. It's so pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays. The way to make learning a lesson of celebration instead of a cause for regret is to only ask, "How can I put this to use today?" 停止等待….Until your car or home is paid offUntil you get a new car or homeUntil your kids leave the houseUntil you go back to schoolUntil you finish schoolUntil you clean the houseUntil you organize the garageUntil you clean off your deskUntil you lose 10 lbs.Until you gain 10 lbs.Until you get marriedUntil you get a divorceUntil you have kidsUntil the kids go to schoolUntil you retireUntil summerUntil springUntil winterUntil fallUntil you die... 直到你结婚直到你离婚直到你有了孩子直到孩子们上学直到你退休直到夏天直到春天直到冬天直到秋天直到你逝去…There is no better time than right now to be happy.Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So work like you don't need money.Love like you've never been hurt.Dance like no one's watching. Wishing you a beautiful, daffodil day!

In stark contrast to his gilded playing career, Diego Maradona never won a trophy as a manager. His spells in charge of teams were only ever brief, and often ended in turmoil. And yet those who played for him during his time in the UAE remember him with deep affection. They describe a manager full of empathy, warmth, and charisma, who would back them - even when all was lost. In Episode 4 of our podcast series, hosts John McAuley and Paul Radley hear from a number of players who were managed by Maradona at Al Wasl and Fujairah. The question to each of them was a simple one: what was it like to be coached by one of the most effervescent characters in all of sport? Diego Maradona is, for many, the greatest footballer to have ever played the game. So what made him so good? In 1982, when aged 22, he moved from Boca Juniors to Barcelona for a world-record $7.6 million fee. During his two years at Camp Nou, Maradona was a constant thorn in the side of arch-rivals Real Madrid, even helping Barcelona defeat the old enemy in the 1983 Copa del Rey final. He would spend two spells at Boca, returning in 1995 following an ignominious exit from the World Cup the previous summer. Two years later, he brought down the curtain on his professional career with a 2-1 victory away to bitter rivals River Plate. That wasn't technically when Maradona hung up his boots, though. In 2011, he arrived in the UAE to manage Al Wasl, and was a regular on the 5-aside or 7-aside pitch. Apparently, he treated those games as anything but recreational. In Episode 3 of our podcast series looking at the Maradona's time in the country, hosts Paul Radley and John McAuley speak to a former opponent at Real Madrid, an ex-teammate at Boca, and even a close friend who was tasked with organising the weekly “friendly” matches in Dubai. True to form, they attest to the fact the World Cup winner could be a handful on and off the pitch. Subscribe to this five-part special to hear the story in full. Diego Maradona was a magnet for news throughout his career, and his relationship with the media rarely ran smooth. When he came to Dubai a decade ago to manage Al Wasl, the glare of the limelight might have been less harsh than it had been for him in Buenos Aires, Barcelona or Naples. And yet he still managed to find his way into scrapes. From kicking supporters of his own team, wading into the stands to remonstrate with opposition fans, and fostering fierce rivalries both near and far, Maradona frequently vented his fury. In Episode 2 of our podcast series looking at his time in the country, hosts Paul Radley and John McAuley speak to those tasked with trying to keep track of El Diego's escapades in Emirates. It marks one of the most extraordinary developments in UAE sport, a moment that carried Emirati football beyond its borders and to the world. Ten years ago, in May 2011, Diego Maradona was announced as the new manager of Al Wasl, a Dubai-based club fourth in the nascent UAE Pro League. The previous summer, Maradona had coached Argentina at the World Cup in South Africa, aiming to lead his country to football's greatest prize, just as he did most famously as a player in 1986. Now he was appointed head coach at Wasl, a decorated club in the UAE top flight but without a trophy in four seasons. Maradona signed a two-year contract, promising to restore his new employers to former glory. It did not quite work out that way, but Fifa's joint player of the century would go on to make Dubai his home for the best part of the next decade. To commemorate that remarkable period, The National has created a podcast series entitled “Diego Maradona: The Dubai Years”, with insight from some of the people who knew best the colourful Argentine during his time here. In Episode 1, hosts Paul Radley and John McAuley detail the whirlwind moment Maradona was considered as Wasl manager, what it meant for UAE football, his arrival in the Emirates, and that first press conference in which the World Cup winner set the stage for what became a rollercoaster ride of emotions. When I first started this podcast my goal wasn’t to be an advertisement for Muskoka Woods. My goal was to find people who were living interesting lives and making interesting decisions. Naturally the low hanging fruit for me was to reach out to my friends. As I made my list of people I wanted to interview, there was a large number of friends from Muskoka Woods over the years who just happened to be living really interesting lives. I figured I would start with them and like anything you have in common with friends the subject of the camp came up – every time. Leading me to start calling this the Muskoka Woods Series. I thought it would be great to cap off the Muskoka woods series with the CEO of Muskoka woods John McAuley and have him speak to his own story but also the stories of the former staff members making an impact outside of camp. I’ve known Johnny for over 30 years now, he was my counsellor as well as an occasional adversary to my desire to “bend” the rules at camp. But he saw something in me and eventually became a mentor of sorts for me over the years. Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, John McAuley began his career as a Counter-Terrorism police officer in the Royal Ulster Constabulary before moving to Canada in 1987. For over 25 years, John has served as the President & CEO of Muskoka Woods, a Christian youth development organization that operates a in the Muskoka region of Canada. John’s passion is the mentoring, coaching and spiritual direction of those in the throes of leadership. He has been married to Lori for over 25 years and they are the proud parents of Jake and Kasi, as well Tux the Wonder Dog. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/no-ordinarylife/support

What I Have Lived for What I Have Lived for我为什么而活着作者:伯兰特·罗素Threepassions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: thelonging for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for thesuffering of mankind. Thesepassions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a waywardcourse, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair. Ihave sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy---ecstasy sogreat that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hoursof this joy. Ihave sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness-that terrible lonelinessin which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into thecold unfathomable lifeless abyss. Ihave sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mysticminiature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets haveimagined. Thisis what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this iswhat at last I have found. Withequal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understandthe hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And Ihave tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which numberholds sway above the flux. You've never farmed before. And you've never really thought about farming before. Taking the offer means that you would need to drop out of college to commit to the apprenticeship. And so would you future wife, because you're also engaged. She isn't from a farming family or background either. So it's you two, in college for something that isn't ag related, dropping out out college to take an apprentice ship on a farm. What would you do? Most people would say tell me more. Well, this is a farm raising chickens on grass. And this farm is located in Swoope, VA and it's run by a farmer named Joel Salatin. What would you do? Would you and your wife drop out of college to accept the invitation to be apprentices or not? A lot of people would say yes. But it's 2016. What if you got this same offer in 1996 when very few people outside of the area knew who Joel Salatin was, it's 1996 when pastured poultry wasn't a thing, and it's 1996 and you are going to be the second ever apprentice on Joel's farm. It's not the same slam dunk answer that it might be for many of you as it is today. That's the exact question that my guest, John McAuley was faced with back in 1996. To quit school and farm, or not. Let's find out how that played out. Learn more at permaculturevoices.com/134 Support the show at permaculturevoices.com/support

[gallery columns="4" size="medium" ids="249,253,252,251"] North Carolina producer John McAuley (Healthy Hen Farms) joins the show to talk about his pastured broiler operation, marketing frozen chicken, and some lessons learned in the brooder.  John focuses on pasture-raised broilers and turkeys and expects to raise approximately 8,000 birds in 2016. John started his pastured poultry career in the mid 1990's as Polyface's second apprentice. He wanted to share some of his perspective on selling frozen chicken (an episode 30 topic). We also check in on his operation in general. Here's some of what we cover: Lessons of building on leased land. Why John ended the wholesale egg business.  Why he says, pick one thing and do that one thing well. John shares his modifications to the Salatin style daily move pen in terms of size, ventilation, and construction. Healthy Hen Farms sells 100% of its chicken frozen as a way to compensate with the logistical nightmare of selling fresh, whole birds. Going all frozen has completely changed Healthy Hen Farm's business. He's able to make deliveries all year round while collapsing the production season. Currently processing 120-130 birds per hour. John talks about his new brooder design and why the QC Supply game bird drinkers is one of the best things about the brooder.
