Boca Juniors fired Fernando Gago yesterday, dumping the Argentinian coach after Boca's 2-1 Superclásico loss to River Plate. Gago took over as head coach last October and never recovered from the club's failed run in the Copa Libertadores where they failed to qualify for the group stage. Gago finished with 17W 8L 5D in his 30 matches in charge. Second legs are next week. Arsenal are the favorites according to Opta to win the entire competition. Set pieces could be the margin against PSG. Arsenal have scored more goals from dead ball situations than any other team in the Premier League since the start of last season, while PSG have given up the largest proportion of goals from set pieces to their overall total in Ligue 1 this season. Luis Enrique, who has been the best manager in the world this season in my opinion, is trying to get his squad's momentum back after it has slipped a bit following clinching their Ligue 1 title. Inter are expected to fly to Barcelona today for tomorrow's match, after blackouts paralyzed Spain and Portugal yesterday. They won't have to repeat Barcelona's infamous 15-hour bus ride in 2010 when flights were grounded due to the volcano eruption in Iceland. Inter ended up winning that semifinal on their way to a treble. Today, they're trying to get back to their best after three straight losses without scoring. Marcus Thuram could be back in the team for the first time in a while to help change that tomorrow. Carlo Ancelotti is expected to take the Brazil job and be in place for their June World Cup qualifiers according to reports. Brazil is also expected to wear Jordan Brand red and black kits as an alternate for the 2026 World Cup, with their unveiling set for the March 2026 FIFA window. Christian Pulisic, according to Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy, is going to receive and contract extension and pay raise from Milan after leading the club with 16 goals in all competitions. Orlando City has signed an affiliation agreement with Black Knight Football Club, the owners of Bournemouth in England and Auckland FC in New Zealand. They also have large stakes in Lorient in France and Hibs in Scotland. The agreement will focus on player development, scouting, and commercial initiatives. Fernando Gago is out this morning as the manager at Boca Juniors. River Plate host Boca Juniors on Sunday afternoon, and if you stick around long enough in this episode Sam, English Dan and Andrés eventually remember to preview it. Before that we look back on last weekend's Liga Profesional action – which saw River finally score some goals – review the week's continental results and bid a brief farewell to the most footballing pope ever.

Papa Francisc și-a lăsat în urmă, printre altele, imaginea unui mare iubitor de sport. Pontiful a fost suporter înfocat al echipei de fotbal San Lorenzo din Argentina natală, țară pe care nu a mai vizitat-o după ce a fost ales Papă.  În ciuda marii sale pasiuni pentru minge, Papa și-a luat acum 35 de ani angajamentul să nu se mai uite niciodată la televizor, luându-și informațiile exclusiv de la radio și din ziare. Papa Francisc a fost în primul rând un mare iubitor de fotbal.  Pasiunea sa a devenit cunoscută  imediat după ce a fost ales Papă în 2013 , când clubul din Argentina natală, San Lorenzo, a postat pe Twitter o fotografie cu el ținând în mâini fanionul albastru și roșu al echipei. Culorile sunt aceleași cu cele cu care s-au vopsit veșmintele Fecioarei Maria, iar porecla fanilor lui San Lorenzo, ”cuervos”, vine de la preoții iezuiți care erau numiți ”corbii” din cauza  sutanelor negre pe care le purtau. Un astfel de preot a fost și Lorenzo Massa, cel care a dat numele clubului pe care chiar el l-a creat la începutul secolului  XX, în Barrio de Almagro din Buenos Aires.  Nu este de mirare că Jorge Mario Bergoglio, cel care avea sa fie al 266-lea Papă al Bisericii Catolice a ținut cu o echipă întemeiată de părintele Massa despre care se spune că avea, ca și el, origini piemonteze. A ales cu sufletul, altfel ar fi fost fan Boca Juniors sau River Plate, grupări mai  cunoscute și mai performante. Papa Francisc a fost suporterul cu numărul de membru 88.235 și și-a susținut echipa favorită încă de la sfârșitul celui de al doilea război mondial. De altfel, cel care avea să devină mai târziu arhiepiscop de Buenos Aires, înainte de a fi ales papă, știa pe de rost formația din 1946 pe care o urmărea la fiecare meci de acasă. San Lorenzo a avut rezultate bune după ce Francisc a fost ales papă în martie 2013. Echipa a câștigat un titlu național chiar în acel an și a luat pentru prima dată Copa Libertadores un an mai târziu. Oficialii clubului au călătorit de două ori la Vatican purtând trofeele pentru a-i mulțumi lui Francisc pentru sprijinul său. Acum, după decesul Papei,  San Lorenzo a anunțat construcția unui nou stadion care va purta numele Suveranului Pontif. Decizia fusese luată încă din 2014, însă startul lucrărilor a fost constant amânat. Atunci Papa,  a acceptat cu bucurie cererea echipei sale de suflet și a semnat un tricou al unui fost jucător admirat de el, Rene Pontoni, care a devenit parte din patrimoniul clubului. Vă dați seama ce ambianță va fi pe noul stadion dacă acum în sectorul Nuevo Gasómetro al arenei unde își desfășoară San Lorenzo meciurile de acasă pot fi văzuți suporteri pictați pe față cu chipul lui Francisc?Fără televizor!Ceea ce este aproape de neînchipuit este faptul că Papa este singurul argentinian care nu l-a văzut jucând fotbal pe Messi și asta pentru că  în iulie 1990 și-a făcut un jurământ după ce Germania a învins Argentina cu 1-0 în finala Cupei Mondiale din Italia, să nu își mai ia informații de la televizor, ci de la radio, din ziare sau de la apropiați. Messi a fost însă primit la Vatican, la fel ca și Maradonna.  Se spune că Suveranul Pontif l-ar fi întrebat pe “El Pibe d'oro” care este mâna lui Dumnezeu, aluzie la celebrul gol marcat în poarta Angliei la Mondialul din 1986. Pus însă să aleagă între argentinienii Messi și Maradona, Papa s-a oprit la un brazilian: Pelé pe care l-a considerat drept cel mai bun fotbalist din toate timpurile. Când s-a întâlnit cu naționalele Argentinei și Italiei, la scurt timp după ce a fost ales, Francisc a remarcat influența sportivilor în societate, în special asupra tineretului, și le-a spus jucătorilor că sunt modele și au o responsabilitate socială importantă. Deasemenea, la o conferință globală despre credință și sport de acum 9 ani, Suveranul Pontif i-a implorat pe lideri să țină corupția departe de terenurile de joc și a spus că sportul trebuie protejat de manipulări și abuzuri comerciale. Totodată, Papa Francisc  a avut un mesaj și pentru jucătorii din NBA, cărora le-a cerut să lupte cu rasismul. Dealtfel, Papa a fost apropiat și de baschet, tatăl său, Mario jucând la San Lorenzo. Pontiful, cu ani în urmă, a ales o expresie din baschet pentru a comunica cu preoții: „Să știi să acționezi ca pivot și acel pivot este crucea lui Hristos. Apoi se mișcă, protejând mingea, cu speranța de a reuși un coș”. Tânărul Bergoglio a jucat și el baschet, deși îi plăcea mai mult fotbalul unde a evoluat ca fundaș.  A trebuit să se confrunte cu propriile sale limite.„Eram o nucă greu de spart”, a spus el, dar a avut puterea să glumească: „Aveam un picior înțepenit”.Continuând cu alte sporturi, Papa a spus despre tenis, că este „un dialog care ne permite să ne perfecționăm”. A caracterizat și rugby-ul ca disciplina în care „se trece mingea din mână în mână și avansăm împreună, până ajungem la țintă”.Acum Papa Francisc, primul Papă sud-american și argentinian, a ajuns la Ceruri și vorbește despre sport cu  „Sfinții”, așa cum este supranumită echipa sa de suflet San Lorenzo.

According to Opta's prediction module, Arsenal-Real Madrid is the toughest quarterfinal to predict. It gets started in London today. Very little history between the two, Thierry Henry led the Gunners to a win in the Round of 16 over the Galacticos in 2006, but that's it. Madrid's defensive woes will be the focus for Mikel Arteta's attack, especially with Bukayo Saka back in action for Arsenal. Bayern host Inter today as well, two of the best defensive teams in Europe this season. However, Bayern are missing Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upemecano to injury so that defense is nowhere near full-strength. Tomorrow's quarterfinals see Barcelona heading to Borussia Dortmund and PSG hosting Aston Villa. In the second legs of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals tonight, Cruz Azul hosts Club América while the LA Galaxy have to go to Monterrey to face Tigres. Gabriel Pec is back for the Galaxy, but it's a big ask to get past Tigres considering LA has only won one match in ten in 2025.Tomorrow, Pumas will host Vancouver while Miami hosts LAFC.Your Copa Libertadores match to watch tonight is Barcelona SC, led by the dashing Sir Second Alexander Castle (Segundo Alejandro Castillo for newcomers to the Morning Espresso), traveling to Buenos Aires to face River Plate. Can't wait to see what Castillo wears on the touchline, but there won't be any fans in the building to see it as River has to play behind closed doors due to punishments from CONMEBOL dating back to the 2024 Libertadores semfinal that saw many rules violations from the club (fireworks, etc) and racist behavior from the stands. It was reported yesterday that Inter Miami holds the discovery rights to Kevin De Bruyne. However, they don't have a Designated Player slot for him, so he would have to take a maximum TAM deal to sign for the rest of the 2025 season (around $870K). Will he take a deal for that to get a DP deal next year? Lots still to sort out. Big time congrats to Soccer America as they begin their 55th year of publication today. This week Sam, Chris and Andrés look at a round of league action that saw Vélez Sarsfield lose again and Tigre and Central Córdoba continue their unexpectedly bright starts to the season. Both Boca Juniors and River Plate claimed narrow victories, though Boca's Libertadores playoff first leg away to Alianza Lima ended in defeat on Wednesday. And what on earth is Foster Gillett up to?

Tom and Jack review a flat start to 2025 for River Plate and try to work out where things are going wrong. Are there any reasons to be optimistic?

Miguel Almirón started and played into the second half for the Five Stripes. Ronny Deila spoke afterwards about Almirón's positioning and wants him to have the freedom on the offensive side but discipline defensively. I think we saw that, overall the defensive side of the team looked good in the win and the offensive chemistry will come with time. Latte Lath could join training this week, Brooks Lennon is back in training already and might ahead of schedule, and Stian Gregersen should be available to play in Wednesday's Bradenton finale against Cincinnati. Cupsets in Britain as Liverpool's race to the quadruple was dashed by Plymouth Argyle, who are on the bottom of the Championship. Their manager went home to celebrate with nachos and Fanta... yes that's what he said. Queen's Park in Scotland went one better, upsetting Rangers after saving a 95th minute penalty and earning a win over the Scottish giant for the first time since 1882.  Atleti were given a dubious penalty in their 1-1 draw with Real Madrid on Saturday. While you might be able to justify the call, it's the kind of call that we shouldn't want to see in games. Barcelona won on the weekend, so La Liga has 3 teams separated by 2 points at the top. Christian Pulisic is tied for the Serie A lead in assists after 2 in Milan's 2-0 win over Empoli. River Plate ended Independiente's unbeaten start to the season in Argentina, while the Uruguayan Clásico finished 1-1 between Peñarol and Nacional. Clubs are still adding players in MLS with the window open into April. On the silly season front, it looks like Eduard Atuesta's move to Orlando is back on. Benjamin Rollheiser is reportedly headed to Botafogo in Brazil as opposed to MLS, but a Botafogo striker could be headed to the LA Galaxy on loan.  More Espresso on Monday on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.
