For this cycle's "Mise-Unseen" entry, Julian, Emilio and Madeline fire up 'Hester Street', Joan Micklin Silver's overlooked and under-appreciated film from 1975 depicting the struggles one Jewish family, recently immigrants to the United States, face while assimilating to life in their new homeland at the turn of the century. The trio comment on the film's unique depiction of New York City (particularly in relation to when it was first released), the unusual complexity that most characters are given, how centering Gitl's journey gives the film a strong emotional core, the film's unexpected humor, its portrayal of the working class Jewish immigrant experience class, and why this movie and its story feel so unique. They then have a great chat with Sharyn Rothstein, an accomplished writer who recently adapted 'Hester Street' for the stage, and discuss what was meaningful to her about this story, what details from the film spoke to her, and what the stage production does to modernize and reshape the story for today's audiences. It's a deep dive into an unsung 1970s NYC film you won't want to miss! Sharyn Rothstein is an award winning playwright, teacher, and writer for television. In the second half of the 19th century, a businessman named George Francis Train rose to prominence through his success with global shipping and trade. As his wealth grew, so did his obsession with himself, and his tireless self-promotion made him a social media phenomenon of his age. Train is perhaps best known for the alleged relationship between his world travels and the Jules Verne bestseller Around the World in 80 Days, and less well-known for his attempts to beat subsequent travel records through a partnership with a newspaper in Tacoma. Cascade PBS's resident historian Knute Berger shone a spotlight on Train and his adventures in the Pacific Northwest in a recent episode of the Mossback's Northwest video series, but there's much more left to uncover. In this episode of Mossback, Berger joins co-host Stephen Hegg to more deeply explore Train's eccentric and monomaniacal exploits. Berger digs into Train's obsessions, travels and unique psychology; reads aloud from some of his writings; explains how he coined the still-beloved Tacoma moniker “City of Destiny”; and ponders Train's uncanny resemblance to some contemporary figures. For more on all things Mossback, visit CascadePBS.org. To reach Knute Berger directly, drop him a line at knute.berger@cascadepbs.org. On this week's episode, host Tim Boyum talks with author and retired political reporter Rob Christensen. The two discuss Christensen's newly released book, Southern News, Southern Politics, which tells the fascinating story of the Raleigh News & Observer and its impact on shaping North Carolina's political history. With a 45-year career at the newspaper, Christensen is undoubtedly an expert on its modern history. But the stories go back to the 1800s when the publisher was involved heavily in Democratic politics and even white supremacy. He also gave Tim his take on the future of newspaper and investigative journalism, which require real time, money and resources. “Influence is diminishing and right now there's not a good economic model for the News & Observer and other small local newspapers to flourish,” Christensen explained. "Who knows whether it's going to be around another 100 years."
Ripperologist and author Russel Edwards has claimed that the DNA evidence from a shawl belonging to one of the victims, Catherine Eddowes, containing the DNA of the killer, has had a “100% match” with a Polish barber named Aaron Kosminski, who had moved to the UK in the 1880s. The analysis claims to have solved the long-standing mystery around the identity of one of the most brutal serial killers in history.

Interview starts at 39:25 Benben / Analog The Archivist joins us for a great chat about the narrative from the 1800's and 1900's gleaned from reading thousands of newspaper articles and stories. He is an avid reader and we talk about the way this research has changed lately, how it's harder to find some newspapers, and his thoughts about the change and quality of news since then. Are 'they' starting to limit what we can see? We get into his process, when something pops into his head, his NDE / OBE, his research into ancient religious views on the death state, the gap between the early 1800's to mid 1800's, the golden years from 1850 - 1920, and why and what happened to reset our reality. The Ether, Radium, Airships, Building on buildings, common languages, petrifaction, vapour canopy collapse, Younger Dryas, the New Madrid Event, the Smithsonian, and WW1 are all discussed. We also chat about the time frames, Alaska, America below the ice level, the biblical flood, cometary impact, plasmas petrifying organic matter, rare materials, the seasons, all tropical, Dragons and Giants, and Big game hunting dinosaurs. https://x.com/1_analog_9 https://www.youtube.com/@1_analog_9 In the intro we chat about Cosmic Summit, YouTube cancelling 35,000 channels https://cosmicsummit.com/ If you would rather watch: https://rumble.com/v4wf1zc-analog-the-archivist.-ancient-america-and-the-20th-century-reset.html https://rokfin.com/stream/48845 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycfUp5q9Dtc Help support the show, because we can't do it without ya. This week, Arizona's Supreme Court upheld an 1864 law that bans abortion across the state. Women there and across the country can thank Donald Trump for putting religious extremists on the bench of the Supreme Court, leading to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and the eroding of abortion rights. But it's not just Arizona facing this issue; other 19th century laws are being reinstated across the country to crackdown on rights against women's bodies. Steve explains why male politicians would never stand for this and suggests how people can fix this GOP problem in the November election. *** To become a The Warning Premium Member and listen to the show 48 hours early with access to premium content visit: https://thewarning.supercast.com/ Subscribe for more and follow me here: Substack: https://steveschmidt.substack.com/subscribe Twitter: https://twitter.com/SteveSchmidtSES Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SteveSchmidtSES/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thewarningses Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thewarningses/
