Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to musician Rachel Haden. A go-to musician and singer in her own right, we learned from our interview, Rachel is part of a musical tradition that frankly, we had no idea the depths of until we started talking about it with her for this episode. Her father, bassist Charlie Haden was one of one of the greatest bassists of all-time. Spoken about in hushed tones next to greats like Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius and Ron Carter, Charlie is perhaps best known for his time in Ornette Coleman's ‘free jazz' Quartet in 1960 that literally helped revolutionize jazz. The free jazz movement pushed the boundaries of what jazz was and what it would become. Now if that were all Charlie Haden ever did, he'd still be a legendary figure if his career ended there. However ever the next 50 years, Charlie Haden worked with everyone from Keith Jarrett, and Ginger Baker, to Elvis Costello, and Hank Mobley and even son-in-Jack Black. Born into a musical family in the 1930s, Charlie Haden grew up with country and American folk music as part of his roots. The Haden Family, much like The Carter Family, were songwriters and performers and even had their own radio show in Iowa in the 1940s. Their musical traditions were passed down in handmade books, much like a family bible, that still exist today. Which is why talking to Rachel is so much fun. Along with her sisters Petra and Tanya, The Haden Triplets have recorded two full-length albums as the Haden Triplets, based on the music of their grandparents while covering classic American country and folk music. Their debut was produced by Ry Cooder on Jack White's Third Man Records and their 2020 sophomore follow-up called The Family Songbook, was a bucket list project that brings their family musical legacy full circle. A bass player/singer/keyboardist herself, Rachel Haden co-founded the band That Dog in the 1990s with her sister Petra and performed & recorded with a veritable who's who in music including Weezer, Todd Rundgren, Beck, Brendan Perry, Jimmy Eat World, Neil Hamburger, The Rentals, The Martini's and more. Her older brother, Josh Haden is also a musician, having founded the late 80s SST punk rock band Treacherous Jaywalkers and later, the band Spain. So what was it like growing up with the preeminent jazz bassist for a dad, an older brother bass player following in his dads footsteps and sisters Petra on the violin & Tanya on the cello? We'll find out, on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.

VIPop #30 ... On the borders of various musical influences, Spain has invented a unique "flow" that is recognisable among all ... And behind this "flow" and the meticulous arrangement of these musical notes, it's the breathing of Josh Haden's soul that can be heard, deaf, deep, difficult, before bursting into the light, again and again ... Powerfully beautiful ... Rarely has music demonstrated as much as here that it's co-substantial with the nature of human destiny. ... Come and listen to the rare words of Josh Haden ... Many thanks for this gift, Josh. ... Support us!
Throw yourself off that cliff and join Ryan, Brant and special guest Josh Haden. YOU DON’T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don’t know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don’t know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). Spain’s debut album came out in 1995. Blue Moods of Spain was so different, with it’s quiet mood and slowed-down tempos, that it spawned a new genre, slo-core. Now, the band is back after a short hiatus with Sargent Place, their most focused album to date. We talk with leader Josh Haden about recording the album with producer Gus Seyffert, who also worked with the Black Keys. He also talks about tracks from the new album, including “You and I,” which features the final recorded performance from his dad, jazz bassist Charlie Haden, before he passed away. We also touch on the band’s debut album and how it compares to this most recent release.
The Dark Stuff Podcast #104 is a continuation of the interview with Josh Haden of the band Spain from #103. In this part of the interview, Haden talks about the second and third Spain LPs, his contractual issues with Restless Records, and the initial break-up of Spain. He then discusses his solo career, his collaborations (Handsome Boy Modeling School, Sean Lennon, DJ Shadow, Blue Man Group), and the re-formation of Spain. Since the last episode was posted, Josh got in contact with me through twitter. His twitter is http://www.twitter.com/joshhaden and the band Spain's is http://www.twitter.com/spaintheband. Dark Stuff Podcast #103 features an interview with Josh Haden, best known for his work in the fantastic indie band, Spain. Haden's career began as a teenager when he performed in the band Trecherous Jaywalkers, who recorded for SST Records in the 1980s. After that band's dissolution, Haden decided to take his music in another direction. That other direction became the band Spain. Spain's stellar debut album, The Blue Moods of Spain, was released in 1995 to much critical acclaim. The album combined elements of jazz, pop, and indie rock into a magical and unique sound. One of the album's songs, "Spiritual" was later recorded by Johnny Cash. After a few follow-up albums, Spain went on hiatus in the early 2000s, and Haden ended up going solo. In addition to his solo career, he also collaborated with Dan the Automator, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Sean Lennon, and the Blue Man Group, among others. Spain later re-formed has released a total of seven albums (including compilations). The band's newest is called, Sargent Place. This interview was conducted sometime in 2008, and was then lost to the ages due to a computer crash. I recently recovered the file, and am presenting part one of the interview here. Part Two will follow next week. Josh Haden is the son of jazz musician, Charlie Haden, and brother to Petra Haden (that dog, The Decemberists), Rachel Haden (that dog, The Rentals), and Tanya Haden. ©2014 The Dark Stuff Podcast

Spain performing the song "Only One" 1 Dec 1995 at Rockamadour, Dour, Belgium. Download the entire show for free from archive.org. This was the second European show Spain ever played. The first was at Les Inrockuptibles 1995 festival in Rennes, France in front of about 1500 people. The show at Rockamadour was in a basement in front of about thirty people (if my memory serves me right). It was so cold we had to wear all our winter gear on stage, and we could still see the frost from our breath. Spain never made a proper recording of "Only One", enjoy it here.
