We have many great writers in San Diego, perhaps one of the most respected is Jim Ruland. While he has made a name for himself writing books about punk rock, co-authoring Damaged the autobiography of Circle Jerks frontman Keith Morris, telling the story of Bad Religion, and writing Corporate Rock Sucks THE BOOK on SST Records the pioneering punk record label. In town, we know Jim from his classic reading series Vermin on the Mount, which gathered authors, poets, and performance artists. Jim is visible at book events around town, where he often writes culture articles for the LA Times. Returning to Postcards from a Dying World Jim is here to talk about his Sci-fi political thriller Make it Stop. In this conversation, we talk about the idea behind the book, the construction of the narrative, and much more. As always after a spoiler warning we go deep. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

We're very excited to begin yet another season of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast and what better way to kick things off then with our special guest and music hero, the legendary Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion, just to name a few. Having met J Mascis back in highschool, the two set out to form their very own hardcore band, Deep Wound, after being inspired and influenced by the growing Punk/HC scene in their area. They would soon connect with Murph and the trio would establish Dinosaur in the mid 80s before renamaing the band to Dinosaur Jr. for the release one fo the most important records of all time, their 1987 classic, "You're Living All Over Me" on SST Records. Barlow soon parted ways with the band to start the incredibly prolific Sebadoh and for the past 3 decades he has created an amazing body of work that has influenced bands and artists all over the world. Whether he's playing in Dinosaur Jr, The Folk Implosions, Sebadoh, working on his own solo material, or the podcast he co-hosts with his wife called Raw Impressions, Barlow is simpy in it for the love of creating something beautiful, something valuable and its exatcly this that makes him one of the most diverse artists out there today. Enjoy!
This week, I'm joined by JASON P. WOODBURY (of Aquarium Drunkard) and filmmakers BRIAN LINDSTROM & ANDY BROWN to discuss their incredible new film LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL. CINEMA CINEMA was established in 2008 by Brooklyn-born cousins, vocalist/guitarist Ev Gold and drummer Paul Claro. They've been described as “experi-metal punks” by the Village Voice, a “jolt of adrenaline” by BrooklynVegan, and “feral and unrelenting” by Big Takeover. Touring extensively through the past 15 years, CINEMA CINEMA has performed over 475 shows across 11 countries. Multiple treks alongside SST Records founder Greg Ginn, including a 45-date North American tour opening for Black Flag in 2014, select dates supporting Black Flag in 2013, and shared dates in 2010, 2011, and 2012 with Ginn's other outfits: The Royal We and The Taylor Texas Corrugators. In addition, the band has half a dozen European tours to their credit, including a 2013 stint in support of Martin CINEMA CINEMA returns, this time with polymath percussionist Thor Harris (Swans, Angels of Light, Shearwater) in tow, to release their seventh full length, “Mjolnir”. Recorded at historic BC Studio in Brooklyn, NY with legendary noise producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, John Zorn, Boredoms). The album will be released July 28 as a red 12” vinyl LP, digital download and via streaming platforms by Nefarious Industries. Inviting multi-instrumentalist Harris into the fold inspires new direction for the ensemble. Exploring his creative repertoire, Thor makes use of BC's synth collection along with an assortment of drums and arcane percussion pieces to leave his fingerprints on the proceedings. The trio submerge themselves in the strange beauty of chaotic sound, captured inside BC's cavernous recording space. Tracked just before the pandemic, Bisi spent time cultivating the sessions in the months that followed, helping shape one of the band's most expressive records to date. This marking the third time that CINEMA CINEMA and Martin have worked together (2014's A Night at The Fights and 2017's Man Bites Dog), the familiarity breeds wild results. His music has been called “abrasive” and “angular”, with an intense focus on virtuosity. brutalovechamp covers new ground. Jack Skelley is a writer and a poet that has been publishing books since the 1980s. His career began in the early '80s in LA when he worked at the Venice-based literary and arts center Beyond Baroque. Beyond Baroque was put on the map by Dennis Cooper who created a scene around it that included late poet and performance artist Bob Flanagan, the late conceptual artist Mike Kelley, the hilarious late poet Ed Smith, Guggenheim Fellowship winning poet Amy Gerstler, painter and novelist Benjamin Weissman, and Jack himself. The crux of this conversation revolves around the publication of Jack's new book, The Complete Fear of Kathy Acker, which was released by Semiotext(e)in May. Jack started writing the book in the 1980s, and as such follows a protaganist named Jack as he traverses the Los Angeles art world of the eighties that Jack himself was indeed a part of. The figure of the late writer Kathy Acker who provides the book's namesake only actually appears briefly in the novel but her method of postmodern literary collage is assumed as a means for Jack to deconstruct the signifiers of the Los Angeles dream factory and the formation of mass culture as the protagonist flits from book readings to punk rock shows to art openings to misbegotten sexcapades. It's a weird and thrilling novel. Jack and Adam here discuss this new book, Los Angeles, Kathy Acker, locating an avant-gardist sentiment in pop culture, the problematization of male heterosexual desire in literature, fictionalizing historical figures, Mike Kelley, SST records, punk rock, and much more. Guitarist and Songwriter Mike Baggetta came across Mike Watt's 1997 punk rock opera 'Contemplating The Engine Room' at just the right time for him. Watt's expansive and highly personal song cycle that uses navy life as an extended metaphor for both his family history and his band, the Minutemen - created with guitarist Nels Cline and drummer Stephen Hodges - became a touchstone of sorts for Baggetta, opening his mind to the possibility of making highly original, authentic music independent of genre. Songs featured in this episode: Pedro Bound! - Mike Watt (Live at Jillian's, Long Beach CA Feb 1998); Everywhen We Go - Mike Baggetta / Jim Keltner / Mike Watt; Boilin' Blazes - Mike Watt; Brave Captain - fIREHOSE; June 16th - Minutemen; Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - Jeff Beck; What's So Funny 'Bout Social Justice - mssv; In The Engine Room, Red Bluff - Mike Watt; Prove It - Television; The Bluejacket's Manual, Pedro Bound!, The Boilerman, Black Gang Coffee, The Boilerman (Live at Jillian's, Long Beach CA), Topsiders - Mike Watt; Reoccurring Dreams - Husker Du; Lake Of Fire - Nirvana (Meat Puppets cover, MTV Unplugged); Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth - Minutemen; Scentless Apprentice - Nirvana; John Coltrane - Ogunde (Live); No One Says Old Man (To The Old Man) - Mike Watt; No One Says Old Man (To The Old Man) - mssv (Live); Fireman Hurley, Liberty Calls! - Mike Watt; What Means Solid Traveller - David Torn; In The Bunk Room/Navy Wife, Crossing The Equator, Breaking The Choke Hold, Wrapped Around The Screw, Shore Duty - Mike Watt; Hallucinating Reality - Dumbass Youth

Glenn Michael Lockett (July 1, 1951 – March 4, 2023), better known as Spot, was an American record producer best known for being the house producer and engineer for the influential independent punk record label SST Records. He styled his name SPʘT, using all capital letters and adding a dot inside the O. Spot recorded, mixed, produced or co-produced most of SST's pivotal acts between 1979 and 1986. He is credited on albums by such notable bands as Black Flag, Minutemen, Mood of Defiance, Meat Puppets, Hüsker Dü, Saint Vitus, Misfits (Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood) and Descendents. Very excited to interview one of my favorite local authors here in San Diego Jim Ruland, who is quickly becoming one of the most important historians of underground music. In this conversation we talk about Jim's journey to becoming a writer, discovering punk rock, organizing literature events punk rock style, researching his books about musicians and his process. Jim is the LA Times bestselling author of Corporate Rock Sucks: The Rise and Fall of SST Records. He also co-authored My Damage with Keith Morris, the founding vocalist of Black Flag, and the freaking Circle Jerks, Do What You Want with Bad Religion. He wrote the award-winning novel Forest of Fortune and the short story collection Big Lonesome. His new novel, Make It Stop, will be published by Rare Bird Books. His work has appeared in The Believer, Electric Literature, Esquire, Hobart, Granta, Los Angeles Times, and Razorcake -- America's only non-profit punk rock zine. On this all-new episode of The Spindle podcast, Marc and John double their fun with a 2x7" EP from the Screaming Trees, 1989's "Change Has Come" b/w "Days" and "Time Speaks Her Golden Tongue" b/w "Flashes." Released on Sub Pop Records and produced by grunge pioneers Jack Endino and Steve Fisk, the Seattle band featured vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bassist Van Conner, and drummer Mark Pickerel. Representing the transitionary era between the Trees' SST Records and major label run, the EP hits—folding in psychedelia, garage rock, and revved up alt-rock. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. The modern music industry is defined, in large part, by major labels and centralized digital services. To try and imagine a world without (or at least around them), we've been looking backwards to the 1980s, when a thriving underground economy enabled a remarkable flood of American rock. If one label could be said to define that moment, it would be LA's SST Records. Founded in Hermosa Beach by Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn, SST would spend the decade releasing an unbeatable string of albums from acts like Hüsker Dü, the Minutemen, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, St. Vitus, and Meat Puppets. To try and understand how SST did it—and why it more or less vanished by the turn of the 90s, we talk to Jim Ruland author of Corporate Rock Sucks: The Rise and Fall of SST Records. Come for discussion of Spot, the best punk producer of all time. Stay for a takes on semi-thriving undefground economies , megalomania, and “weeding out.”

Corporate Rock Sucks. This episode is about how big companies get it wrong, and why it's critical to support the independents. We take SST Records' iconic slogan and apply it to the bike industry. Then we call out some small companies worth supporting. Music picks of the week: Robot – Husker Du Stevil – Deftones
After the success of last month’s series on SST Records, it was only natural that I took a look at doing a similar series featuring another of my favorite record labels of the 80s. I’d actually been thinking about a TwinTone Records episode for a long, long time, so why not do it now? Many people think of only bands such as The Replacements, The Suburbs, and Soul Asylum when thinking about this label. Oh no, there is so much more. There is such a wealth that even this two hour episode misses out on some great, great releases. But I did what I could. Just like with the first SST episode, the initial 45 minutes or so are a chronological look at the label’s early releases. Singles by not only The Suburbs but Fingerprints, Curtiss A, and The Pistons. Later in the show I’ve got some favorite tracks by The Phones, The Magnolias, and The Feelies, along with an early release by The Jayhawks. I did refrain from including material from the many sub-labels that were in the TwinTone empire. Maybe that could be a future show? I would love it if every listener bought at least one record […]

Part two of The Ledge’s look at SST Records focuses on the second half of the 80’s. There are a few big names involved, including Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Buffalo Tom, and future grunge major label heroes Screaming Trees and Soundgarden. There’s a look at the last few Black Flag albums, along with the Greg Ginn solo project Gone. There are also a few veterans of the music scene, including Divine Horsemen, Volcano Suns, and the first solo releases by Husker Du’s Grant Hart. Once again, special thanks must go to Jim Ruland for his fabulous book, Corporate Rock Sucks: The Rise & Fall of SST Records, which inspired this series of episodes. I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion! When I was informed there was a new book about one of my favorite labels of the 80s, I just had to have it. Jim Ruland’s Corporate Rock Sucks: The Rise & Fall of SST Records is every bit as great as I hoped. It really tells the controversil tale of not only label founder Greg Ginn, but the entire circus of bands and staffers that ran a label that launched the careers of dozens of legendry artists. It was only natural that I put together a show dedicated to these artists, but I quickly discovered this story could not be told in one episode. Tonight’s broadcast starts off with a chronological look at most of the label’s first 20 or so releases, followed by another hour spotlighting some of my personal favorites. While I still have dozens of records to sample for next week’s episode, if there’s any you feel needs to be included, please let me know! I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but […]

My guest today is Steve Ornest a rock multi instrumentalist, engineer, and producer in Redondo Beach CA. Steve learned his studio skills at Total Access Recording under the guidance of Wyn Davis (RSR192) starting at the young age of 15. Steve started out playing guitar for rock sessions by bands like Don Dokken, Minoru Nihara (Loudness), and many others, but fast forward to the present and Steve is now running the studio with Wyn. Steve's mission has been to reinvigorate the local South Bay music scene by making it affordable for young local artists to come in and work on their song, EP or album and walk away with the same commercially competitive results Total Access has become known for over the past forty years. Aside from working with incredible local talent like Joker's Hand, Mor Flowrs and Hand Drawn Maps, Steve continues to work on records for legacy artists such as Foreigner and Dio. Steve is currently working on a record with country artist Annie Bosko, which features a duet with country legend Vince Gill. Steve has also worked alongside producers Ken Scott (Beatles, Elton John, Supertramp), Eric Sarafin (Ben Harper, Amy Grant), and many others. Steve recently opened a 1000sq ft rehearsal suite steps away from the studio, called Total Access Rehearsal. The idea was born from a frustration at the lack of rehearsal studios in Los Angeles, particularly in the South Bay. The suite boasts an acoustically treated showcase room, top-of-the-line gear, a private lounge/bathroom, A/C, free water and coffee, private parking, and convenient roll-up entry. Total Access Recording has an extensive client list including L.A. punk band Black Flag and many SST Records artists, Husker-Du, The Descendants, then flourishing in the 80's hair metal era recording Dokken, Great White, and White Lion, followed in the 90's with post-punk artists; Sublime, No Doubt, Pennywise, Slightly Stoopid and others.
