"Once grunge, pop punk, and alternative rock went mainstream in the early ‘90s, local music burst into vibrant micro-scenes that stretched from Santa Monica to East LA, the Valley to the South Bay, and beyond. Among them was a Hollywood Geek Rock contingent" that included bands like Weezer, Nerf Herder, That Dog, and more... and their influences are still felt today. Some have even been Geekscape guests! Joining us on Geekscape are two people who were there to see it happen: writer/rocker S.W. Lauden (Ridel High) and Jason Cropper (Chopper One, Weezer) to talk about the "geek" rock scene that changed the face of music as documented in the new oral history book and album 'Generation Blue'. I'm joined by TV writer Eric Ernst, the self-professed "biggest Ridel High fan" I know! Pick up a copy of 'Generation Blue' here! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we'd like to wish you a Happy New Year 2024 with this encore episode for first episode of our third season. Our guest today is talking to musician Rachel Haden about her father, influential jazz bassist Charlie Haden. Rachel was kind enough to talk to us about so many things including her memories of growing up as a triplets and going for walks with jazz trumpeter Don Cherry when the Haden's lived in New York. This led us down the path of many other genres of music including country, punk, jazz, indie rock and much.more as the Haden's all sang and played instruments growing up. Thanks dad. We learn about the Rachel's time on the road with Todd Rundgren, her band That Dog, Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance as well as Beck, Jimmy Eat World, Neil Hamburger and more. While we were at it we also discuss jaco Pastorius, Ornette Coleman, Ry Cooder, Jack White, Mike Watt and others. It's a very fertile musical well we draw from when talking to a Haden family member like Rachel as there are so many avenues and styles of music she and her family are connected to. The story spans 1930s Iowa where Charlie was part of The Haden Family Band, who rivaled the Carter Family in popularity in the Midwest and runs all the way to the 2020's with the release of Rachel's solo albums including making music with Charlie's son-in-law, comedian Jack Black of Tenacious D. If you are a fan of music, this episode is the one for you. Take a listen, on the Rarified Heir Podcast encore edition with Rachel Haden, coming up here.
Anna Waronker joins us on to show to talk about her amazing career as a singer, songwriter, composer, producer, and perhaps most famously as the leader of 90's alt-rockers That Dog. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to musician Rachel Haden. A go-to musician and singer in her own right, we learned from our interview, Rachel is part of a musical tradition that frankly, we had no idea the depths of until we started talking about it with her for this episode. Her father, bassist Charlie Haden was one of one of the greatest bassists of all-time. Spoken about in hushed tones next to greats like Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius and Ron Carter, Charlie is perhaps best known for his time in Ornette Coleman's ‘free jazz' Quartet in 1960 that literally helped revolutionize jazz. The free jazz movement pushed the boundaries of what jazz was and what it would become. Now if that were all Charlie Haden ever did, he'd still be a legendary figure if his career ended there. However ever the next 50 years, Charlie Haden worked with everyone from Keith Jarrett, and Ginger Baker, to Elvis Costello, and Hank Mobley and even son-in-Jack Black. Born into a musical family in the 1930s, Charlie Haden grew up with country and American folk music as part of his roots. The Haden Family, much like The Carter Family, were songwriters and performers and even had their own radio show in Iowa in the 1940s. Their musical traditions were passed down in handmade books, much like a family bible, that still exist today. Which is why talking to Rachel is so much fun. Along with her sisters Petra and Tanya, The Haden Triplets have recorded two full-length albums as the Haden Triplets, based on the music of their grandparents while covering classic American country and folk music. Their debut was produced by Ry Cooder on Jack White's Third Man Records and their 2020 sophomore follow-up called The Family Songbook, was a bucket list project that brings their family musical legacy full circle. A bass player/singer/keyboardist herself, Rachel Haden co-founded the band That Dog in the 1990s with her sister Petra and performed & recorded with a veritable who's who in music including Weezer, Todd Rundgren, Beck, Brendan Perry, Jimmy Eat World, Neil Hamburger, The Rentals, The Martini's and more. Her older brother, Josh Haden is also a musician, having founded the late 80s SST punk rock band Treacherous Jaywalkers and later, the band Spain. So what was it like growing up with the preeminent jazz bassist for a dad, an older brother bass player following in his dads footsteps and sisters Petra on the violin & Tanya on the cello? We'll find out, on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Anna Waronker was born into a storied music family, but--as a child--she dreamed of working at the post office or becoming an accountant. Her gift for angular melody and vivid lyricism led her to pursue the family trade after all. She tells Joe about: attending artsy alternative school Crossroads; recognizing her gift for songwriting; the evolving band dynamic of That Dog; co-parenting with another musician (husband and Trap Set alum, Steven McDonald); and the liberating feeling that accompanies scoring for film and tv. Be sure to check out That Dog's upcoming show 11/16 at The Regent in Los Angeles.

On today's episode I talk to Anna Waronker. Anna is a singer/songwriter, composer, and producer originally from Los Angeles. After graduating from high school, Anna formed the band that would eventually become That Dog. While the band was only active for six years, they released three great albums on DGC Records (That Dog, Totally Crushed Out and Retreat from The Sun) and toured with everyone from Beck to Weezer to Blur. The band reunited in 2011 and recorded a new album to be released in the future. As a solo artist, Anna has released two albums, Anna and California Fade, and scores music for film and TV, which includes shows like Clueless, Dawson's Creek, Grey's Anatomy and Castle. Anna also now works in theater. Her last production was Lovelace: A Rock Musical, a collaboration with her sister-in-law Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Go's. On this week’s Open Mic Spotlight podcast, Pattee Wilbanks and Robert Lovett of Mountain Creek House Fire stop by the studio to talk with Heather about their collaborative process, some of their favorite places to play in Chattanooga and how their respective creative impulses compliment each other perfectly. Their music is drawn from the winding twin histories of folk and country music but is given new breathe and life through their effortless interactions. With just an acoustic guitar and mandolin, they spark a gorgeous series of stories that could be told on front porches or large stages across the country. Dipping into a well of bucolic experiences, their work possesses a vivid and affecting emotionality. There’s a gentle simplicity inherent in the work of Mountain Creek House Fire, a rambling folk shuffle that eases down deep into your bones. Whether they’re discussing their admiration for local open mic nights or the time they were almost rained out at Nightfall, they evince an earnest sentimentality, one that doesn’t cater to rote instincts but seeks out new experiences in an effort to broaden its emotional perspective. They perform covers of “Honeysuckle Rose” by Fats Waller and “It Hurts Me” by Julie Miller, as well a few original songs that easily hold their own in that formidable company. After Wilbanks talks a bit about her time dog-sitting, they announce that they have a new video coming out soon for “That Dog is Crazy,” which features clips of dogs that fans have sent in specifically to be included in the visuals for the song. Recalling the jaunt and sincerity that was common to the folk music of the early 20th century, they imbue these sounds with a modern tenacity and present them as a viable means for expression—a stringed rural ideology wherein they can conspire with anyone within earshot.
