In this episode of Grumpy Old Geeks, we're serving up a buffet of dystopia with a side of snark. First, Kuwait has finally realized crypto bros are an energy drain, not a feature. Celsius Network's founder gets 12 years for running a “safe investment” Ponzi scheme. And in Lopez v. Apple, we find yet another reason to question Cupertino's moral compass. Then it's time for a trip through the tech trash fire. DoorDash gobbles up Deliveroo, proving there's no such thing as too many overpriced salads. Google wants your kids to befriend Gemini—because what could go wrong giving tweens supervised AI access? Tesla's “Robotaxi” trademark gets the boot for being as generic as Elon's pickup lines. Meanwhile, Grok strips in public, deepfake porn sites get the axe, and dating app “Raw” rawdogs user data like it's the early 2000s internet. We also hit peak Black Mirror with brain-typed tweets, AI-resurrected relatives, and crypto kidnappers playing real-life GTA.On Media Candy, the streaming overlords dump trailers like Halloween candy. Squid Game is back to traumatize you, Star Trek: Lower Decks keeps boldly going where no animated series should, and The Old Guard 2 teases a Theron-vs-Thurman sword fight. Plus, Apple's UX team found the “enhance” button, Netflix wants to be helpful (lol), and Google dreams of becoming a Hollywood darling. Over in Apps & Doodads, Apple wants to stagger iPhone drops, Disney sells you a $3,000 droid with zero sass, and Smart Flowerpots are now a thing because apparently, you can't be trusted to water your plant. And finally, it's time for The Dark Side with Dave, where Bittner brings us malware, click tracks, fake vocals, and the shocking truth about KISS's lipsync disaster in Antwerp. We also dip into ILM's jaw-dropping legacy, Star Wars' shady back alleys, and a new Disneyland in Abu Dhabi, because nothing says “happiest place on Earth” like 120°F desert heat. 4-22-25 Tonight we're talking with Arne Defurne, owner and head meadmaker of Clockwork Bee Mead in Antwerp, Belgium. Arne has a nano-meadery that is growing, and makes some pretty ‘ok' mead, producing mostly dry and off-dry meads, which is uncommon. We will dig into this and see what Arne is up to over there. Back in 2019, Arne came to the 2 first European meadmakers conferences and at the end of the second one was told to bring his own mead next time. Little did they know he had started making first batch right before leaving for EMMAcon. Arne is one of the people behind European meadmakers Association and worked on the just launched realmead certification program in Europe. It was 2019 and Arne did not have a pico meadery but a shower meadery (see photo to the right). He had a separate spare shower where he installed a rack where all fermentation was done. In 2020 he entered in the Mead Madness Cup home competition in Poland, but due to covid EMMcon was canceled and the Mead Madness Cup was an online medal ceremony and Arne won 2 gold medals. From then on the hobby became too expensive (he made more than 15 different meads in 1 year) and he started as a gypsy meadery at the Blacksmith's Meadery. From a mead enthusiast to home meadmaking spiraling out of control, and two years ago launching the first Belgian gypsy meadery under the guidance of the Blacksmith's Meadery. Driven by a passion for intricate flavor combinations, Arne's goal is to reintroduce this ancient beverage to modern audiences with a fresh twist. As a mead maker, he focuses on crafting what he loves to drink. He's deeply intrigued by how different flavors interact and how to blend them effectively. This curiosity leads him to explore methods that allows him to elegantly and fully integrate these flavor profiles into his meads. As a result, his products are uniquely positioned as semi-dry and dry meads, setting them apart from the more typical sweeter options. As a certified Belgian craft producer, Arne uses only the finest local ingredients and honey sourced from controlled European origins, resulting in high-quality meads that have already earned several awards. Kevin Flanagan takes his two travelling pals, Kuba (10) and Maya (7), to a city that utterly delighted them. “I found Antwerp had everything for an adult,” Kevin said, “fabulous restaurants and lively bars, while the art offering is second-to-none. And the newly developed docklands area has such terrific additions as the MAS - the Museum aan de Stroom, which afforded us hours of fun.”   And the kids? “Kuba and Maya had a ball. From the zoo to Chocolate Nation (the largest chocolate themed museum in the world), it was non-stop fun. Maya and Kuba could not recommend Antwerp highly enough.”  Kevin added, “And it is so ethnically diverse, with at least 166 different nationalities. As well as the world's famous Diamond Quarter, where 84% of the world's rough diamonds and 50% of cut diamonds are traded. Go see and enjoy this truly fascinating city.” Listen to the episode now to find out all about travelling to Antwerp. Hello to you listening in Antwerp, Belgium!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.  Perhaps you've heard the old joke about two boys each of whom is brought into a room in the middle of which is a staggeringly high heap of horse manure. The first boy looks at the pile in disgust and says, “What's the big idea? This is nothing but a pile of horse manure!” But in the other room the second boy is down on his hands and knees gleefully scooping away at the heap saying, “I just know there's a pony down here somewhere!”We all face unfairness, difficulties, challenges, and worse. And yet these might not be wasted moments if we can see a chance to learn from the misfortunes encompassing our plans, our contradictions, failings, and hopes.  I keep thinking of a line from the 2004 novel Gilead by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marilynne Robinson, a story about how wisdom was forged and lives on in generations. The narrator is the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition and then, at age fifty, became a chaplain in the Union Army, losing his right eye in battle. Here's what he said about the trials, turmoils and tribulations of his life: “I am confident I will find great blessing in this.” And that is what he said about everything that happened to him for the rest of his days.Practical Tip: The School of Hard Knocks is not an easy place to get an education but the lessons learned might help us to overcome, perhaps even thrive in what Life throws our way. She wrote several articles and book chapters on these subjects. For more than thirty years she worked with disadvantaged children, youngsters and their families. She strongly believes in the values they hold and together with them keeps on searching for ways to go on. What challenges her is to talk and work with young people and their parents or carers without reproducing abuse or violence in the conversations and still create possibilities in a collaborative way when speaking becomes difficult. This brought her the previous years on a quest finding ways of “talking off the beaten track” and work in creative ways. "Prosomnus is North America's largest manufacturer of oral appliances", says Dr. Mark T. Murphy, Chief Dental Officer at Prosumnus.  In this podcast, Dr. Murphy explains to our listeners HOW an oral appliance can be an alternative treatment for sleep apnea. Most physicians will prescribe CPAP therapy but that does not always work.  For various reasons, studies have found that many people diagnosed with sleep apnea do not use their CPAP machine.  An oral appliance could be the answer. The two-day event will offer 12 continuing education credit hours and take place at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco from August 18-20, 2022. ProSomnus has organized over a dozen lectures and expert panels featuring leading clinicians and researchers from around the world, including: Prof. Dr. Olivier M. Today we will be talking about debt swaps and China's role in the global financial landscape, with Rebecca Ray and Blake Alexander Simmons of BU. Although China has only recently become a major creditor, it has already built a strong record of bilateral debt relief and has even begun to advocate for linking actions to promote biodiversity and fighting climate change with international finance and debt relief.   Guests: Rebecca Ray is a Senior Academic Researcher at the Global Development Policy Center, at Boston University. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and an MA in International Development from the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University. Since 2013, she has focused on the nexus of international development finance, particularly China's role in reshaping the global financial landscape, and sustainable development, particularly in Latin America. She produces the annual China-Latin America Economic Bulletin series and the China's Overseas Development Finance database. She was lead editor for the books China and Sustainable Development in Latin America: the Social and Environmental Dimension and Development Banks and Sustainability in the Andean Amazon. Blake Alexander Simmons is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Global Development Policy Center. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Queensland (Australia) and his M.S. from the University of Antwerp (Belgium). His research focuses on how environmental, political, and psychosocial factors influence conservation decisions in social-ecological systems, and how we can change behaviors to achieve positive outcomes for people and nature. At the GDPC, Blake is investigating the impacts of China's Belt and Road Initiative on biodiversity and indigenous peoples.   References: Blake Alexander Simmons, Rebecca Ray, Yang H, Kevin P. Countries are struggling to repay given Covid. 4:00 – Relieving a portion of debt in exchange for climate protection. Science paper lists which are best countries for this solution. 4:45 – Three economic trends: capital flight, currency volatility, and drop in trade. All challenge debt repayment and capital investment. If countries can't make repayments anyway, shared goals are a way to renegotiate commitments without default. 6:00 – China has been at the forefront of debt relief for poorest countries. 6:30 – How does this affect China's position as a creditor? 7:00 – China's debt portfolio highly concentrated in a few countries. China has an interest in restructuring with these countries because of the long-term diplomatic and economic relationships—Venezuela as an example. 8:15 – What's the difference of a debt-for-nature and debt-for-climate swap? 10:00 – History and examples of debt-for-nature swaps, going back to 1980s and 1990s. WWF pioneered, Ecuador was an early case. Third parties like WWF or the Nature Conservancy would pay for a portion of outstanding debts in exchange for conservation policies. 11:30 – Example of bilateral debt-for-nature swaps. Early cases of debt-for-climate. 12:50 – Example of the Seychelles and the marine protected areas. 14:00 – Nature-performance-linked-bonds. Examples of Ecuador and Argentina proposals. 17:30 – How does enforcement work? Are there standards? 19:00 – Inclusion of local communities in enforcement versus top-down goal-setting and monitoring. 23:00 – Announcements that could come from CBD COP. Discussions with CCICED. 25:30 – Expectations about green finance for nature. 28:00 – Why China still financing coal projects and whether that contradicts the idea of debt-for-climate swaps.

6-24-21 Tonight we're continuing our travels in Europe with Gert Smet and the Blacksmith's Meadery in Antwerp, Belgium. Gert is a reenactor - a living history nerd. His living history group, Ortus Phoenix, portrays the late 15th century, just after the death of Charles the Bold. Gert drank his first mead on one of the medieval festivals in 2011. Needless to say it was 'high quality' rotgut (some cheap German swill) that made his stomach dissolve. He was sure that he could make something more palatable himself and got to experimenting. In retrospect his first mead must've been quite horrible - no technique, no Idea of fermentation management, no nutrients other than raisins (hey, it was the dark ages, right?). His very first mead was a JAO clone I got from stormthecastle.com. It was abysmal, but compared to the "mead"  available at the festivals it was like amazing. Ortus Phoenix (his group) liked it instantly (doing the friend thing) and they got other reenactors to try it. They liked it as well. What ensued was not unlike the story of the bucket of mead with the bottle of aspirin on top. Luckily Gert started reading (The Compleat Mead Maker among others), and discovered GotMead? This upped his game fairly quickly and some people started badgering him to go pro. Which he did in 2016. The first official batch he made was for the wedding of a couple of friends. He'd been making mead in his basement but that rapidly became too small. This hindered the growth of the meadery in a big way. His batch sizes were limited to 120 liters at a time. This year they moved to a bigger location and the production took a huge leap. ...and now the new location is becoming too small.. They used to produce drier meads, traditionals and melomels, and the occasional braggot (being a Belgian he had little choice there...). Fairly quickly he got into the sweeter stuff -after tasiting some of Ken's meads- and that's now the main stay in their production. Every now and again they still make a dry traditional. He loves working with fruit, especially berries, apples and pears. A while ago Gert discovered the joys of barrel aging. Like there wasn't already a problem space-wise. They're continuing to grow, have some interesting collabs going on and on the docket, and their name is starting to get peoples attention. Interestingly, Gert's son, Ares, (10 YO)  discovered their meads on a craft beer bar menu and promptly declared that he did like having a famous dad. Gert nearly shot a € 12 Lambic out of his nose. Daan Noppen (1977), born in Arnhem (The Netherlands) is an international artist mainly working in drawing and painting. He is best known for his realistic larger than life drawings of portraits and bodies. Physics and it’s relation to our being, our emotions, plays a big part in his work. The artist plays with notions of reality by projecting time as a physical dimension. Rather than becoming something ‘scientific’ this opens up a visual world of our hidden layers of our desires, our pain and our cry for being loved. ‘Amsterdam based artist Daan Noppen brings a special dynamism to his pencil drawings of still life and portraits. His works are not only eye-catching for their precise layering of details, but also in their massive size that gives his subjects a more palpable presence. A closer look at each piece reveals mathematical equations in between the pencil lines that relate to our reality. More recent works express the artist’s continued fascination with mathematics, geometry, and physics, as his figures appear to be gauged, dissipate, and intermingle in a void of empty vector space’. - Hi-Fructose Magazine (March 2016) Daan Noppen’s work has been exhibited in New York(USA), New Orleans(USA), Mexico DF(Mexico), Shanghai(China), Metz(France), Luxembourg(Luxembourg), Munchen(Germany), Traun(Austria), Antwerp(Belgium) and in Amstedam (The Netherlands). The artists Symmetry I&II drawing recently won an A’design Award 2016 in the category Arts, craft and ready made. Topics Discussed In This Episode: His origin story within the arts The breaking down of traditional gender roles A residency that he did at Andrew Salgado’s studio in London The differentiation between tasteful nudes and pornography Using different creative skill sets in conjunction with your current art medium Book: “The Way Of The Superior Man” by David Deida www.artistdecoded.com

★ ARTIST ★ De Kunstenaar (Netherlands) ✫ SUPPORT ✫ @dekunstenaar http://www.de-kunstenaar.nl/ ✫ FACEBOOK ✫ https://www.facebook.com/dekunstenaarmixes ★ ADDITIONAL INFO ★ "De Kunstenaar" is the Dutch term for "The Artist". But why did he choose De Kunstenaar as his name? That’s because of his second hobby - which is that he likes to paint. Music is art too, so here we are. De Kunstenaar started creating tribute mixtapes, mainly to expand his mixing capabilities to the fullest - and to be clear, meaning no offence to the artists - it was not his intention to make the audience think these mixes were made by the artist(s) themselves. It's disappointing not every artist sees it like this. Well, his life certainly is a 4-beat loop: Eat, Work, Love, Sleep. And this in repeat mode. Most mixes by "De Kunstenaar" are based on a 4-beat loop, because that is so nice and easy for the brain to listen to. His love for electronic music started when he first entered a club called Zillion, in Antwerp (Belgium) back in 1999 or 2000. He admired the DJs that played there - and all he could do was dream about standing behind those decks himself one day - no matter how much effort it would cost. Of course Tiësto was his great inspirer in those days :) Besides his hobby mixes which you will find here , "De Kunstenaar" also has a fulltime job at the office - a warm house - a baby girl - and a caring and loving wife. He also likes to paint once in a while. You can view some of the paintings he has made at his facebook page. Download for free on The Artist Union

She started her company using her experience as a scientist, her passion for nature, and concerns about ingredients in cosmetics, to develop and produce her own brand of natural skin care products. She has a Ph.D. in Biotechnology and she was (and still is) a scientist and an account manager in the Life Science field for years, before she ventured into entrepreneurship and started her own business. As a child, Marleen was always interested in plants and animals. Around the age of twelve, she knew she wanted to be a biologist. After finishing her Bachelors in Biology, she did a Masters in Biotechnology and to obtain her Ph.D, she worked at the research institute, Vlaams Instituut door Biotechnologie (VIB), doing research projects in different domains. One of the projects she did was about ecotoxicology and she saw the impact some chemical components of consumer products had on our environment, causing pollution and affecting wildlife. These compounds can even end up in the fats of Polar Bears on the North pole. She believes with good efforts and good will we can help our environment and the generations to come. Over the years, she got more and more inspired to develop her own skin care products. She experienced some skin problems from creams, other creams lost their effect, and she got concerned about the fact that we don't always get the correct information about all ingredients in commercial products. She then started developing creams with natural ingredients in her lab. Marleen would do research on the ingredients to determine which ones would work and be safe and which ones were toxic and even cancerous. Even though it was more a hobby doing it on a small scale, she decided to start the process of commercializing her products. Education is key to Marleen, as cosmetic labels are not easy to understand and we are often not familiar with the ingredients. She consults specific databases on websites she trusts. But even information on good websites can be conflicting and contradictory. Also, a negative review or two is not enough to have assumptions about a product. She therefore always verifies specific information and doesn't rely on one source. She sees a role for herself to give her audience simple guidance and clear information. One of her favourite sites is cosmeticanalysis.com, a quite reliable source. The site provides detailed information on ingredients, as well as scientific references of cosmetic products. To take advantage of some of their detailed information, you do need to become a member. Other cosmetic database websites to check out are EWG and CIR (links at the top). She also reads comments and blogs from e.g.  Jetske Ultee and Perry Romanovski. These dermatologist provide good information as well. Marleen collects needed information from all different sources, before she draws conclusions. She also relies on her own tests and feedback from clients. It took Marleen three years before she mastered making and testing her first cosmetic products. It took a while because she was new to the industry, and there were many challenges to overcome, like doing tests, providing safety reports and finding good providers. She also mostly invested her own money. It was a long and at times, dissapointing process, and she felt like giving up sometimes. But now, she can proudly say that after 3 years of development and getting through the paperwork, her creams are not only safe and well tested, she gets very positive feedback from clients on its use. She offers about 15 skin care products, from day creams to night creams to body creams. As mentioned, many compounds end up in the environment and stay there permanently. Her products are 100% biodegradable, easily broken down in nature rather than adding to the number of used products polluting it more. While ingredients for cosmetic products are easy the find, good providers are not. As time went on, she learned which ingredients were good, and which providers were reliable. Also she is thankful for expert formulators and scientists she met who helped her on this journey. She applied to become part of the Start it @KBC startup community and get proper guidance on her business, so that she could grow with her products. She first heared about Start it@KBC during an interview on the radio with new business owners who had had good experience with them. Marleen was hesitant at first, not confident she had a good business idea. But she did apply at the last minute and to her surprise she got selected. She now works closely with Stefan Schippers, who is her mentor. Marleen was also invited by THINK with People, and was offered mentoring and advice from them as well. She says that these start up incubators helped understanding the business side of things. One of the first advices she got was to take a good look at her costs and revenue, know the exact numbers, make her calculations in much more details. Even though it sounded logical, it made her see that her she had made mistakes in her price setting. She had to change that mind-set! What she also learned is that you have to speak to many people in business, in the industry, and be in as many conversations as possible. It helps to see which next steps you need to take in your business. This year is very crucial in terms of growing her business. Knowing she has a good product, Marleen now needs to focus on the marketing. But as she is a developer at heart, doing marketing and sales is just hard. That's why she is looking for a Marketing and Sales Partner to promote and substantially grow this year. As for her future plans, Marleen believes success is all about making good decisions and learning what to prioritize first. The stakes are high! If within the next two years, she won't make a good profit, she will have to stop. Keep investing and putting her own money in improving her products and market them, will be too costly. Currently she runs a webshop, but she also partners with a growing number of physical shops. She is also planning on improving the packaging for her brand, as the look currently doesn't stand out. Marleen will also be using social media sites such as Facebook for promotion. And she believes that product reviews and testimonials from her clients are key as well. She listens closely to them, as she improves and further develops her products. Marleen has always had a great support system. Especially her husband is her biggest fan, advising her, making decisions with her. It was needed. She experienced that the cosmetics world is a complicated world and it may be confusing for people who want to start their own cosmetics business, but they will get the hang of it eventually. Her advice is to do a lot of research to avoid a lot of mistakes. There really are no courses when it comes to producing cosmetic products so starting entrepreneurs need to talk more to people that are active in the field of cosmetics. The longer you are in the field, the easier it becomes, and the bigger your support and partner network will become. When I asked her if she felt like a role model to women, she says that she is happy to share her lessons and knowledge. Fortunately, she did not have difficulties during her career as a scientist, being a woman. But she does recognize that Professors are usually men and promotions are mostly given to men. That of course should be improved. To Marleen, a woman can be anything she wants to be as long as she works for it. Sometimes women are not as ambitious as men, because they take on more tasks in the household. At the same time she strongly believes man should take on more tasks at home, so that in the end we get an equal partnership. As a woman in her fifties, Marleen proves that age does not matter when it comes to starting a business.  She has a very optimistic spirit. Purpose and passion do the trick! Seeing her business as something that is still developing, she hopes to continue even after she retires in 15 years time! ENJOY THE INTERVIEW!
