• Poliovirustypen, Impfstoffe, Impfstoffviren: Was ist was? • Was sollten Hausärztinnen und Hausärzte konkret tun? Gast dieser Folge: Dr. Carolina J. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Betty Boyd became known as the “Queen of Tulsa TV” after a career in broadcasting that lasted over twenty-five years. This self-described “wall flower” blossomed as a mother, a volunteer spokesperson for the March of Dimes, a respected broadcaster, a member of the board of education and an Oklahoma state legislator. When both her husband, Bill Boyd Jr., and her daughter, Beverly, contracted polio in the late 1940s, Betty became a volunteer spokesperson for the March of Dimes. Based on her charm and speaking abilities she was asked by KOTV in Tulsa to audition for the station and was hired in 1955. She became the host of Women's Page and Boyd's Eye View, focusing on social issues of the times. Ten years later she joined KTUL to launch another popular television program, The Betty Boyd Show.Betty left KTUL in 1980 to become director of information for Tulsa Tech and later became a member of their board, serving as chairman at the time of her death. She was asked to seek office in the Oklahoma State Legislature, and served the public for ten years. Among her many legislative achievements was co-writing the bill that created Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. A breast cancer survivor, she also focused on health issues.Betty Boyd was recognized for her service and dedication with numerous honors, including lifetime achievement awards from both Women in Communications and American Women in Radio and Television. It would start with a headache, a fever, maybe a funny tummy. But soon enough your knee would give out, or your arm would hang limp, or you would struggle to breathe. You'd be taken to the hospital, where you'd get your diagnosis - polio. If you survived, you ran the risk of doing so with paralyzed limbs, struggling to walk on bulky leg braces. Your parents would be terrified they might lose you, and so everybody wanted the one thing that could stop all of this - a vaccine. A polio survivor who hadn't moved her leg muscles in decades picked up the phone two days after a single therapy session and said one sentence: "Something is happening in my legs." Her daughter — once stuck in airport wheelchairs, now walking the entire length of the Denver airport alone and playing pickleball — had told her it might. What's actually going on inside the human body when a lifetime of atrophy reverses in 48 hours? Is this real? Lance sits down with Connie to walk through three eye-witness stories that don't fit the script — including a man going blind from a rare genetic condition who saw vibrant color again 18 hours after one session. So is this real, or is something deeper at work in the design of the body itself? In this episode: * A lifetime of polio atrophy reversed in just two days * Wheelchair through the airport to walking Denver International alone * A man going blind sees vibrant color again 18 hours later * A husband sleeps through the night for the first time in over a decade * A war veteran's chronic road rage vanishes overnight * The Level 10 Matrix protocol Lance uses preventatively, not reactively * Why Connie believes this was a divine appointment for her whole family If you've been told there's nothing more that can be done, you may want to watch this one twice. Dr. Eli Cahan explains how he evolved into both a neonatologist and an accomplished, intrepid journalist, inspired by the likes of Atul Gawande and shaped by experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is a balancing act, rushing between fixed medical facilities and airplanes. “We get to bear witness.” His stories have covered anti-microbial resistance (AMR) among war fighters. An upcoming piece will cover the weakening of prevention and control over polio and the possibility of the reemergence of polio in America. With each, a focus is shaping opinion in Congress. Polio has become a major biosecurity issue and does indeed command attention in Congress and within the administration. The Pitt is fearless in exposing the problems people experience with American health care. At the same time, most health communications are frayed–what to do?

He chose a different story. The shift wasn't motivational. It was methodical. At 16, he started testing biblical principles like if-then equations. The first one worked on his furious brother Mike. So did the next. In 64 years, not one has failed him. His core belief: you can decide that everything happening to you is happening for you. Whether it's true doesn't matter as much as what that belief unlocks. For Myron, it unlocked everything. (Available to subscribers only, episode free to play 28th March)This guest is an incredible Para Swimmer… Ros Hardiman has spent most of her adult life in a wheelchair, having contracted Polio at age 6. She represented GB at 2 Paralympic Games and broke 8 Paralympic world records in the S7 and SB6 categories. She is an inductee into the marathon swimming hall of fame, class of 2024: having swam The English Channel in 2009 in just over 20 hours; and it is also with noting that the year prior to that in 2008, she agonisingly fell 700m short of the French coast after being in the water for over 24 hours. For that swim she was awarded the Frank Richards Endurance Award, for the most meritorious, often unsuccessful, endurance swim of the year across the English Channel… She has swam Lake Windermere (both directions), and in 2019 she crossed Loch Ness from south to north in 20 hours 10 minutes becoming both the oldest British women to swim it at the age of 67, and also as the first disabled swimmer… it was an absolute joy to chat to Ros Hardiman.

Dr. Aileen Marty, Infectious Disease Specialist and Professor at Florida International University, joins Bob Sirott to talk about the latest health news. Dr. Marty shares what the CDC is saying about being aware of the polio virus while traveling and the status of it in the U.S.
This week, we're exploring polio: a highly infectious viral disease that can attack the nervous system and cause paralysis, mainly in young children. Polio has been pushed to the brink of elimination thanks to global vaccination efforts - but it still persists. In this episode, we'll look at what polio is, how vaccines have helped control it, where the virus still exists today, and whether it can finally be eradicated... Like this podcast? Whalehead Deadbear Brainworm-Lamprey went to Austin (where his pal who wants people to get Polio lives) and told the peasants to eat more cheap, nasty cuts of meat. He wasn't talking that way back when he ate veal from my plate aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean. Bill Clinton puts the lie to Nitwit Nero's claim about when he stopped having anything to do with Epstein. And since they subpoenaed Hillary, they opened the door to deposing Melanoma. And she IS in the TrumpStein files!
NOTE: This was released in May of 2025, but due to life being what it is, I didn't get to finish the final two parts of the episode. So I am rereleasing this episode this week, and the next two weeks I will release the following two episodes. I have now officially backed myself in a corner and I simply MUST finish the episodes now. A(nother) three-hour FiliRoxster! (If only it wasn't all horror and disgust), but the H.O.R.N. FamilyCommunityCongregation makes it both comprehensible and bearable. That's good because what we have to deal with in this post-Harambe timeline is deeply disturbing. There's a creep out there (natch, he's one of Bobby's pals) who wants people to get POLIO. Then there's Krusti the Nasty Nazi Noem and a blind man freezing to death alone in a city (Buffalo) when her goons dumped him. The H.O.R.N. exists because of the people who have kept it going for 22+ years. we struggle month-to-month to survive; just to pay bills, buy groceries, get new brakes, fill scrips: the very essence of struggling America. Can you help?
Let's talk about Polio making a comeback, Trump, Measles, rates, and risks....

In the early 1950s, Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin were in a race to develop a vaccine against polio. While Salk's killed-virus vaccine was the first to be distributed, Sabin continued working to perfect his own approach. In the end, Sabin's oral polio vaccine—made from a weakened live virus—proved easier to administer and was ultimately distributed far more widely, though his name never achieved the same recognition. In this episode, Lindsay is joined by epidemiologist and oral historian Karen Torghele. Her book Albert Sabin: The Life of a Polio Vaccine Pioneer is due to be published by Yale University Press in June of 2026. In April 1954, a group of first graders lined up in the gymnasium of an elementary school in McLean, Virginia for the start of the Salk polio vaccine trials. In an era before widespread federal government involvement in public health, the National Institute of Infantile Paralysis executed an unprecedented experiment involving nearly 2 million children and tens of thousands of doctors, nurses, and volunteers. It was the largest peacetime mobilization in American history. While scientists evaluated the results, Americans waited anxiously to find out whether the vaccine was safe and effective, putting an end to 40 years of fear. But in the spring of 1955, a shocking revelation would bring the vaccination program to a sudden halt.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! It's no exaggeration to say that polio shaped modern medicine. Before a vaccine was available, polio outbreaks left thousands of people paralyzed, with some unable to breathe. But, in 1928, the development of the iron lung meant that, for the first time, humans could rely on a machine to stay alive. In this episode, we trace the rise of polio in the early 20th century, the science behind the virus, and the race to save lives. From early resuscitation experiments to the unexpected inspiration behind the iron lung, we uncover the innovation, ethical dilemmas, and human stories that defined this era, hearing from two people whose early childhoods and families were dramatically shaped by the disease. By the late 1940s, the National Institute of Infantile Paralysis had raised millions of dollars to pay for patient care and laboratory research. But polio cases were reaching record levels, and scientists were no closer to a cure. Frustrated by the slow progress, Basil O'Connor resolved to recruit fresh talent to the cause. He soon found what he was looking for in a young and energetic researcher named Jonas Salk.In 1951, Salk began testing a killed virus polio vaccine on monkeys in his Pittsburgh lab. His research soon put him at odds with the leading polio scientist Albert Sabin, who wanted his own live virus vaccine formula to prevail. As their rivalry escalated, Salk prepared to take the risky step of testing his vaccine on human subjects.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! In the summer of 1921, 39-year-old Franklin Delano Roosevelt was on vacation with his family when he developed a fever, muscle aches, and chills. Pain spread to his legs, and soon, he was paralyzed from the waist down. Doctors diagnosed him with polio, which was fast becoming America's most dreaded infectious disease.Every summer, polio struck without warning, causing swimming pools and movie theaters to close and panicked parents to keep their children indoors. Polio killed thousands of Americans each year and paralyzed many more. But scientists had no idea how to stop it.Roosevelt and his friend and colleague Basil O'Connor resolved to change that, launching the March of Dimes, a revolutionary fundraising campaign that galvanized millions of Americans to donate their time and money to the fight against polio.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more!
