A bald striker who likes to tuck in his shirt and bangs in goals for fun? No, he's not Ronaldo Nazario in the early 2000s while he was playing for Real Madrid. No, he's arguably even better (and certainly more of an FPL hero at the very least). The club is Crystal Palace, the time is April 2024, the number on his shirt is 14, and the man of the moment is Jean-Philippe Mateta. His whopping 29 points is the capstone of, quite frankly, a feast of a gameweek—one in which the top-scoring FPL team (aptly called “Hakuna Mateta!”) ended on 216 points. Funnily enough, the popular Liverpool assets turned out to be the big disappointments, with the triple-up of Salah, van Dijk, and Robertson getting outscored by Will Hughes. It may be tempting to linger forever on DGW 34, but we must set our sights on the few remaining gameweeks of the season. To that end, we discuss which Chelsea and Spurs assets are good for DGW 35, the Salah problem (crazy that he's become a “problem”), and overall transfer strategy before the big DGW 37. Since we won't have time to record an episode next week, we look at captaincy options for GW 36 in addition to GW 35. This year was an AMAZING year of podcast guests.Today, I wanted to reflect on and recap 12 of my favorite lessons from this year.1. Creative Thinking as a Competitive Advantage - Million Dollar Mindset (Ep 231)This episode was the most shared episode of the year. It ended up in a few forums and got a lot of love. What helped Will and the team grow Organifi from $18M annually to over $100M? It wasn't just hard work. It was creative thinking and problem-solving.Learn the secrets of Moneyball, the Hollywood Black List, and more!2. You Can 13X Through Creative, Data-Driven Marketing - Brendan Bannister (Ep 221)In a similar vein to the podcast with Will Hughes, this interview with Brendan Bannister was a banger. Brendan ran paid media for William Painter during their years of meteoric growth. We talk about the power of design and simplicity. 3. What You Don't Know About Your Customer Is Costing You. The Missing Piece to Your Attribution, CRO, and Marketing Is Customer Insights - Trevor Crump (Ep 250) / Jeremiah Prummer (Ep 262) I'm completely sold on the idea that when done properly, customer surveys uncover tremendous insights that will shift how you advertise, position, and optimize your products. I cover my 4 favorite questions to ask in post-purchase surveys. 4. Why Your Price Is Likely Wrong and What to Do About It - Byron Myers (Ep 255)The way you set your initial price is not the way you determine your optimal price. There's an optimal price for rev maximization and one for profit maximization. How does demand and conversion rate shift when price increases or decreases? After you get some data, you need to get scientific. Chart out your demand curve and conversion rate to find your ideal price. This isn't static, though. You should be testing at least 2 times per year or likely every quarter. 5. Customer Value Optimization Trumps CRO Every Time. And It Informs CRO. - Drew Sanocki (Ep 245)Not all customers are created equally. You have some whales (your most valuable) and some minnows (your least valuable). What's more important than almost anything else you do is identifying whales and attracting more of them. This is a key part of understanding that there are only 3 ways to grow your business:Get more new customersGet each customer to spend more (raise your AOV) Get customers to buy more often (increase LTV) 6. Organic Growth on YouTube. 3 Types of Content. - Liz Germain (Ep 234)YouTube is the 2nd most visited site on the planet. Users spend a TON of time on the platform. If you're good at creating content, you can build a large following and drive awareness and traffic for your brand. In this episode, I talk to YouTube pro, Liz Germain, about the 3 types of content you must create to build an organic following.7. Brand is Everything - Person Rutherford (Ep 260)Want a huge exit? Want all of your advertising efforts to improve? Want greater retention and higher LTVs? Want to charge a premium? You need to focus on brand building. The good news is you can do this profitably. If you want customers to seek you out by name, tell others about you, and feel pride in associating with your products, you need a BRAND. Preston Rutherford, one of the co-founders of Chubbies who had a 9 figure IPO, knows all about this. Brand building can't be done overnight. It's a long

The full back role and performance is reviewed.Rio comes on and regrets the respect we gave them and the gaps in midfield and, despite being the better of the two forwards, the Bayo miss in the first half. Rio would like to see more of Chakvetadze but ponders who drops out of where to accommodate him. Reviewing the season so far Rio sees us either dominating and not scoring or scoring and conceding because he was so open – before hitting us with the new that he was sat 2 seat away from Mogi Bayat (Bayat has not signed him up as a player)! We join up the Ion family in different cars and see if we can start a family feud on the basis of who should start up front! Gary asks why play Louza if he doesn't seem interested, we go across to Danny, - a shake up in midfield is suggested to increase the work rate. We compare Jake Livermore's contribution with that of Jonny Howson at Middlesbro and discuss the lightness of fit midfield options and quality. We go to arbitration Jack to decide who should start up front.A confused Blue Cheese Brett joins to inject positivity and insists that the hire manager/sack manager routine should stop, he asks if Louza could play deeper in midfield in the Will Hughes role. Leboffski asks can we just hang in there and build slowly and organically over a couple of seasons – and then panic! Yes, it’s another one of those perennially popular episodes of the show where I chat to somebody who has managed to find a way to turn their passion for riding into a viable career. In this case, it’s the great John Bassett, also universally known as John Dragon, one of my closest and oldest friends from my years snowboarding and - yes - a lifer par excellence. In John’s case, this has revolved around the Dragon Lodge, the legendary chalet in Tignes that has been one of the cultural epicentres of European snowboarding for a couple of decades now. This is thanks entirely to the inclusive, infectious environment that John and partner Will Hughes have created and through which they share their own passion for snowboarding as widely and inclusively as possible. As I discovered, this has been entirely intentional on John’s part, and has been about creating an environment in which the type of culture that has influenced him could flourish in turn. The result is that the Lodge has been at the heart of any number of hugely influential European snowboarding mini-scenes, including the launch of Looking Sideways itself, as we discussed during the show. And now the future of the Lodge is in doubt thanks to the pitiless combination of Brexit and Covid. The fate of a place like the Lodge is emblematic of the challenges faced by the wider winter sports industry, and throws up interesting questions about the type of scene we’ll have once the dust settles, and the type of opportunities we want to encourage as a society. Could somebody from John’s background open a place like the Lodge today? The answer to that is probably no which is, to put it mildly, a crying shame given what places like this contribute to the fabric and culture of our little world. So it was that in early December 2020 I grabbed a few cans of Guinness and headed up to John’s to sit around the firepit and discuss these questions and plenty more. I hope you take as much from this episode as I’ve taken from my friendship with John over the years. Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.
