Canciones que cumplen medio siglo. Canciones que cumplen medio siglo. Send us a textThis week This Is Vinyl Tap discusses the criminally underrated album by Pure Prairie League, 1972's Bustin' Out. Bustin' Out contains the band's most well known song, "Aime," a radio staple for the last 50 years. Oddly, while even the most casual of music listeners know the song, many would be hard pressed to name the band that performs it. As a result, Bustin' Out has been somewhat ignored, which is a shame, because it is a fantastic collection of country infused rock songs. The album's secret weapon is David Bowie's guitarist Mick Ronson, who provides string arrangements and, some (uncredited) scorching guitar. While the band did move away from the rawer sound of their debut on Bustin' Out, the album is bit more mature and undeniably full of expert playing and fine, soulful vocals by front-man Craig Fuller that makes its influence on the alternative country bands of the early 1990's very apparent. This is Play That Rock n' Roll's interview with Mike Reilly, longtime member and now owner/manager of PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE! Mike visited the show to discuss the band's first album in nearly twenty years, "BACK ON TRACK"! In this conversation, we discuss what motivated them to release a new album, the songs they recorded for it, and the surprising backstory of some of those songs! We also talk about PPL's history with Vince Gill, their iconic “Sad Luke” album artwork, and how a YouTuber from the UK helped introduce their music to a new generation of fans! And somehow, we even ended up talking about what it would take to get Pure Prairie League to play the Sphere in Las Vegas. Post-election 2024 started out somber, weepy, and kind of hopeless for many of us. Thank goodness for my old pal, singer/songwriter/producer, Steve Postell. A long-time news junkie, he determined this day he was through. He pulled me and the rest of us out of the muck––back into the music, art, and the land of the living. We processed together a bit first and then shifted gears with Steve singing his My Parade, which perfectly spoke to his altered focus with an invitation for us to join him in acceptance, awareness, and gratitude of sorts. He segued into great stories––his relationship with David Crosby and how Our House came to be, The Immediate Family, awaiting a possible Grammy nom this week for their amazing Denny Tedesco doc, how they came to be, and where they are now––when Steve first became aware of the section backing James Taylor, the moment that opened the door to the full circle back around with all of them––being compared to Jackson Browne to befriending and working with hiim––teen art class with Bob Dylan to coming thisclose to playing with him––producing and playing with so many of his heroes, and them playing with him––his current solo record deal, upcoming show, more Our House dates to come, Immediate Family dates as schedules permit… life is rich, life is good, even if we're Walking Through These Blues––his spectacular song on his upcoming LP that he closed with. Steve and I go back to the heady days of the New York club scene in the 80s. I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café on Bleeker Street, and Steve was fresh out of Pure Prairie League. I was RockStar struck. I booked him that day and have continued to for the past 35 + years wherever I went and whatever I did. When I had my book launch at The Federal in LA it was Steve's Night Train Music Club I went to. As he always does, he put together a most kick-ass jam band. A rotation of the best players on the planet, some of whom comprise, with Steve, The Immediate Family. That's another of Steve's ongoing passion projects. I went into this evening a semi-paralyzed mess. I leave uplifted, reminded that friendships, music, work, fun, love, and service will see me through. Thanks, Steve! I trust you saved more than me this night. Steve Postell Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Wednesday, 11/6/24, 5 pm PT, 8 pm ET Streamed Live on my Facebook Replay here: https://bit.ly/4el9nU0

The band, which started as a group of friends playing cover tunes, continues to enchant audiences with their rich legacy and vibrant performances. As they approach their 50th anniversary, Pure Prairie League is set to celebrate their storied career with a high-profile appearance at the Legends of Country Rock show in St. Charles, MO, on Saturday, September 28th, 2024.The Legends of Country Rock show will be a significant event for fans and a testament to PPL's enduring influence in the genre. Their performance is anticipated to showcase a blend of their classic hits and contemporary sound that has kept them relevant over the decades.Pure Prairie League's self-titled debut album, renowned for its Norman Rockwell/Saturday Evening Post cover and the iconic cowpoke “Sad Luke,” laid the groundwork for their success in the country rock arena. Their second album, Bustin' Out, introduced fans to the timeless Craig Fuller-penned classic "Amie" and solidified their status as pioneers of the genre. With subsequent releases like "Two Lane Highway" and numerous albums throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, PPL's legacy has been further enriched by contributions from notable members such as George Powell, the Goshorn Brothers, and Country Music Hall of Famers like Gary Burr and Vince Gill.As they enter their sixth decade, Pure Prairie League continues to inspire a new generation of country rockers. Bands such as Keith Urban, Nickel Creek, and Wilco have all cited PPL as a major influence. Their sound, described as combining “sweet memories with edgy, contemporary muscle,” remains as captivating today as it was in their early years. To complement their live performance, Pure Prairie League also appeared on the Midwest Mixtape Podcast, brought to you by The Barn. I want to explore why you don't need a massive audience to find success with your podcast. I'll share a personal story about attending a Pure Prairie League concert—a band you might recognize for their hit song "Aimee" (but probably don't). Despite performing to a crowd of just 500 in a 600-seat venue, this band exemplifies how a smaller but dedicated audience and multiple streams of income can lead to a financially sustainable career. From ticket sales to merchandise and personal interactions at their merch booth, Pure Prairie League makes a living and has done so for 50 years. I'll highlight the importance of passionate fans and the idea that even 1,000 true fans can make a significant difference. READY TO START YOUR PODCAST? Every Friday in June leading up to Heritage Days, K-100 is showcasing the bands performing on the Pepsi Main Stage and giving you the chance to preview their music before showtime. This week Sparks chats with Freddie Dobbs and Dick Reck, of Heartsfield, who will playing the Heritage Days Pepsi Main Stage on Friday, June 23rd from 9:15 to 10:30 p.m. From their band description: Heartsfield are known for their vocal harmonies and layers of rootsy instrumentation (characterized by accents of pedal steel, dobro, banjo, mandolin, dobro, etc.) and have been credited with influencing such monster '90s acts as The Dave Matthews Band and Phish. The group was also known for their grueling, Grateful Dead-like touring ethic, which saw them playing 300 shows a year throughout the '70s with the likes of Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller, Pure Prairie League, Joe Walsh, Willie Nelson among literally dozens more. Over their decades of touring, the early years found them playing Macomb and Forgottonia on several occasions.

Pete Mancini is a welcomed troubadour for our times, by building community though his music. His lyics are as comfortable as your favorite weather-worn blue jeans, and his style is reminiscent of Tom Petty and Hank Williams, with a hint of John Prine. Over the years, Mancini has opened for acts such as Jimmy Webb, Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Pure Prairie League, Robbie Fulks, Amy Helm, Larry Campbell & Theresa Williams, Kevin Gordon, and Iain Matthews. I was fortunate to stumble on Mancini over a year ago during the pioneering days of The Long Island Sound podcast. Pete was one of my early guests on the podast and I was fortunate enough to sit down with him and talk about his travels and ever growing catalog of songs on the most recent episode out today. Pete Mancini keeps popping up on my radar. In a soon-to-be episode of The Long Island Sound Podcast, I interviewed Bill Herman of Paradiddle Records only to find Pete singing on the opening track of the Hank Williams Uncoved album, Lovesick Blues to perfection. More to come on the Hank William's project on May 12th. You can find a deeper conversation with Pete Mancini right here on The Long Island Sound. Learn how to discover new music and learn the methods and secrets of successful singer/songwriters and music professionals. You host, Steve Yusko engages artists and music industry professionals from Manhattan to Montauk and abroad. The debut album by The Sundays entitled Reading, Writing and Arithmetic introduced the dream pop band to the UK during a time between alternative waves. The Smiths had broken up previously, but it would still be several years before the Manchester sound would take over the indie scene. Vocalist Harriet Wheeler and guitarist David Gavurin met at Bristol University. The two became a couple, and they formed the band in 1988 after adding bassist Paul Brindley and drummer Patrick Hannan to the group. Neither Wheeler nor Gavurin were pursuing music at the University - Wheeler studied English literature, and Gavurin studied Romance languages. The Sundays' rise to popularity was quite rapid. Their first single hit number 45 on the UK singles chart a year before the album was released. Since the group had only been around for a year or so before that single was released, they didn't have a lot of material developed. Wheeler and Gavurin were also perfectionists, and so they would not work to a deadline for the album. The Sundays would produce 3 albums during the 1990s. However, they never embraced the rock lifestyle. The American tour for their second album (released in 1992) was cut short due to exhaustion and homesickness. The third album wasn't released until 1997, by which time Gavurin and Wheeler had children and were beginning to settle down. While they would continue to make songs in their own studio, no further albums would be released.Bruce brings this group and their debut album to the podcast. Can't Be SureThis is the debut single released in England which hit number 45 on the UK singles chart. It is about desire, but not for a specific person or thing, more as a concept. “And did you know desire's a terrible thing, the worst that I could find. And did you know desire's a terrible thing, but I rely on mine.”You're Not the Only One I KnowThis deeper cut is a break-up song. The lyrics seem to reflect a depressed singer who wants the guy to come back, but is too proud to talk to him about it.JoyThe last song on the album is also one of the last the group wrote for the album. They actually wanted to name the album “Joy,” but someone had already used that title. It is a little heavier than some of the other tracks but keeps the impressionistic feel. Here's Where the Story EndsUS listeners will recognize this song as the hit, going to number 1 on the US Alternative Rock charts. However, it was not released as a single in the UK because the group's record label was in financial trouble. The lyrics are looking back on a past relationship. "It's that little souvenir of a terrible year which makes my eyes feel sore. Oh, I never should have said the books that you read were all I loved you for." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme to the from the television series “Newhart”The second comedy series starring Bob Newhart ended this month with a big reveal that the entire show was a dream of Bob Newhart from the first series. STAFF PICKS:What It Takes by AerosmithLynch leads off the staff picks this week. Aerosmith could do no wrong at the start of the 90's. This fast ballad chronicles a guy breaking up with his girlfriend and wondering what it takes to get over their relationship. The electric guitars helped remedy a concern that the original takes made the piece sound like a lovelorn, twangy country song.Blues Before and After by The SmithereensWayne features a song telling about a guy that is in love with a woman who only uses him for her own selfish gain, leaving him with the “blues before and after” their encounters. This is off the Smithereen's album, “11,” which was their third studio album. The name is a nod to a skit in the 80's mock-umentary film, “This Is Spinal Tap,” or perhaps the movie “Oceans 11.”All For You by David Baerwald Rob previously brought us “Welcome to the Boomtown” by David and David. This song is from one of the David's after that group split up. It is from Baerwald's debut studio solo album, “Bedtime Stories.” Baerwald is a great storyteller, and most of his songs reflect this. Singer songwriter Joni Mitchell was involved in this album.Texas Twister by Little FeatBruce picks up the pace with this boogie number. Little Feat was formed in 1969, but this 90's iteration of the group is a little different. Founder and front man Lowell George died in 1979, and was largely replaced in this formation of the band by Craig Fuller, founding member of Pure Prairie League. This lead-off track from their ninth studio album is about picking up a girl and wondering if you will survive the evening. NOVELTY TRACK:Hanky Panky by MadonnaMadonna's album inspired by the movie "Dick Tracy" (in which she starred) sported this spanking new single.

Steve Postell is a singer/songwriter/guitarist/composer and producer. Things are rocking in Los Angeles. KATONAH STUDIOS in Marina Del Rey continues to stay busy as we have our own little version of Muscle Shoals, with a great community of players contributing to the productions. Steve was the composer for the documentary “Dying to Know,” about Timothy Leary and Ram Dass, narrated by Robert Redford. Steve contributed guitar to David Crosby's last solo album, Sky Trails, and has co-written a song for his newly released record, “For Free”. Steve's new CD, “Walking Through These Blues”, was recently released on VIVID SOUND. This CD features a host of guests, including David Crosby, Iain Matthews, Tony Furtado, Bekka Bramlett, Jeff Pevar, Greg Leisz and many others. In addition to David Crosby, Steve has worked with John Oates, Jennifer Warnes, Kenny Loggins, Eric Andersen, Iain Matthews, Pure Prairie League, Dan Navarro and many others. He recently contributed engineering and mixing duties to the James Taylor/Carole King live concert film, “The Troubadour Reunion Tour”. Steve performed on and co-produced a CD for renowned producer/guitarist and songwriter Danny (Kootch) Kortchmar. The CD features a star studded cast including guest appearances by James Taylor, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and Michael McDonald. This CD led to the formation of a new band, The Immediate Family, which in addition to Steve includes legendary session men Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel & Russ Kunkel. The band has released numerous videos, a live record, 3 EP's and a full length LP of new material on Quarto Valley Records. Their first single, Cruel Twist, reached top 10 on the blues charts. The band will be featured in a documentary by “Wrecking Crew” director Denny Tedesco. Their new full length record will be released in conjunction with the roll out of the film. Steve continues to preside over his band THE NIGHT TRAIN MUSIC CLUB, a rotating collaboration which has featured many legendary artists including David Crosby, Jackson Browne, David Pack, Paul Barrere, Steve Ferrone, Albert Lee, Jeff Bridges and numerous others. As if all of this isn't keeping Steve busy enough. He has just been added to the musician line up in David Crosby's band - David Crosby & Friends. Stay tuned for some great stuff just around the corner!
Mike Reilly has seen it all through his career and Pure Prairie League was coming to St. Louis area ... OF COURSE we were gonna talk to him!

My guest this week is Kevin Kelly, who's a producer, mixer and long-time audio educator with a host of major label, film score and jingle credits. These include projects by Blondie, Edgar Winter and Rick Wakeman, among many others that he worked on from his well-known studio called The Workshoppe. For 14 years, Kevin was the producer/engineer for the WLIR-FM live concert series that featured Hall & Oates, Billy Joel, The Police, Charlie Daniels Band, Peter Tosh, Ziggy Marley, Pure Prairie League and many more, and also served as co-producer and chief engineer for a series of short-form radio shows for Sixty Second LP. Kevin also taught studio recording technology for 22 years at Nassau Community College, and continues to teach one adjunct course per semester there. During the interview we spoke about the importance of networking, the new generation of plugins, how mutlitasking has changed attention spans, analog summing during mixing, and much more. I spoke with Kevin via zoom from his studio in Huntington, NY. On the intro I'll take a look at how being a Grammy nominee might be detrimental to your career, and a new kind of greener vinyl is on the horizon.

There aren't many bands that get a big break with a breakout song and are still touring 52 years later! Pure Prairie League is one of them, and they will be at Rams Head On Stage on August 10th! Today, we are joined by Mike Reilly, one of the earliest members of Pure Prairie League, to talk about their staying power, their tour, how our paths crossed in 1980 in Marietta, Ohio, and more! We went down a rabbit hole (which I love to do) and found out that when Colbie Caillat was a baby, Mike held her while her father (a producer) was working on a Pure Prairie League track. And he has the photo to prove it! We also learned of his snobbyness and his disdain for the TikTok world we live in. Have a listen! Steve Postell Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Singer/Songwriter/Producer, Steve Postell and I go way back to Bleecker Street in the heady daze of the New York club scene. He's played every club I've booked and guested on every show I've hosted and produced. Whenever we see each other we pick up right where we left off, as comfortable as a pair of favorite faded jeans, and yet, still exciting and new. Incredible songwriter, amazing guitarist, with the voice of an angel, Steve treated us to a mini-concert sprinkled throughout, from his latest pearls to his golden gems. A first long-awaited music lesson at 8 with his first guitar, which he outgrew the first week, to his first gig for $25 when he was 13, how an art class with Bob Dylan may have changed his life, to solo gigs, Broadway touring companies, to Broadway itself, with Patti Lapone's Evita, jingles, record deals, Pure Prairie League, his own bands, recording, engineering, producing, New York to LA, The Night Train Music Club, first meets with Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Russ Kunkle, and Danny Kortchmar, and how the Immediate Family was born. Danny Tedesco's upcoming doc on them, featuring players Steve idolized, who are now cohorts and friends… James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Carole King… playing with Michael McDonald, David Crosby, and most recently, Kenny Loggins, around a campfire and on stage, plus his sold-out show at McCabe's. Steve's living his dream, always putting in the time with disciplined daily practice, an indefatigable work ethic, and extraordinary talent. Old friends are treasures. The year 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the disturbing song “Timothy.” Banned by radio stations and called "the worst song ever recorded," its lyrics about cannibalism in a Pennsylvania coal mine eerily parallel the real-life Sheppton disaster. Written by playwright Rupert Holmes, the Billboard hit launched the career of The Buoys. They went on to perform at the legendary Whisky a Go Go, Stone Balloon, and the Satsop River Festival which they kicked off in front of 150,000 fans. The Buoys toured the Netherlands, got hustled in a pool game with Sly Stone—before his massive ten-mile traffic jam, hung out with Blue Öyster Cult—before their riot at the Kingston Armory, received a lecture on libertarianism from musical genius Frank Zappa, and were mentored by Delaney Bramlett—before cocaine ruined his life. Morphing into Dakota, and produced by Chicago's Danny Seraphine and Rufus's Hawk Woliinski, the band played on the same stage as the Beach Boys during the national Bicentennial Celebration. They were invited to replace the Pure Prairie League's Vince Gill and joined Freddie Mercury and Queen on a sold-out 35-city tour ending in a three-day standing-room-only Madison Square Garden concert. Here is the story of an amazing American AOR band with more than ten recorded albums who, despite the infamous “Dakota Curse” and the Coal Region Hoodoo, achieved acclaim in Europe, Korea, and Japan. Their story also depicts a cautionary tale of substance abuse, the pitfalls of fame, and the true price of the rock and roll fantasy. Maxim W. Furek is among the first wave of regional Rock Journalists. He is founder of Timothy: Northeastern Pennsylvania's First Music Publication, created to promote Northeastern Pennsylvania's musical talent, and named after The Buoy's Timothy (1971), at the time, the region's most successful rock song. Curiously, through a strange sequence of events, Timothy Magazine evolved into the highly successful Pennsylvania Musician and Maryland Musician.

Gram Parsons called country rock Cosmic American Music; it was a little of this and a little of that, combined into a musical stew that today we call Americana. In the 70s, though, the marriage of rock and country, complete with the steel guitar and perhaps a banjo or two, seemed like an unlikely marriage. The truth is that rock and country share similar roots, but heavily formatted radio was not sure what to do with bands like Poco, The Flying Burrito Brothers, or Pure Prairie League. The DID know what to do with The Eagles, who ultimately abandoned the country in their country rock on the way to selling millions of records. This episode looks at the sub-genre of 70s rock that was considered by some to be too country for rock and too rock for country. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/amy-lively/message

Opening Monologue. Delusional MSM Pitches Another Fit. American Political Establishment seems to want an immediate global thermonuclear confrontation with Russia -- wants it right now, and will apparently accept nothing less. CNN's Brian Stelter, in the grip of some kind of mania, accuses President Trump of being under the "control" of Vladimir Putin. CIA John Brennan yells 'treason.' All because Trump has engaged in diplomatic dialogue? Do these people really believe the things they say? We address the psychology of delusion, pondering the emotional distortions that arise when incremental delusions are added upon a foundation of delusion. Meanwhile, we begin our review of the Saturday Night Bombshell, a.k.a. the DOJ's release of the Carter Page FISA Application. At long last, we approach the actual origins of SpyGate. But why are some still defending the Leftist Police State? Also, radical socialists appear to be taking over the Democratic Party, and a caller outlines the "Q-Anon" phenomenon. Plus, we celebrate Colorado's summer high country around Holy Cross City. Hiking and camping, life is good above timberline in the Rocky Mountains.
