with @jinglejamOP @eddylazzarin @rhhackettHello and welcome to web3 with a16z, a show about building the next era of the internet by the team at a16z crypto, that includes me, host Robert Hackett.Today's episode features Jing Wang, CEO and executive director of the Optimism Foundation, along with a16z crypto CTO Eddy Lazzarin. We discuss the peculiarities of open source software — including the incentives that bind contributors together, tradeoffs between the freedom to customize versus sticking to standards, and the challenges in setting up and running a foundationWe also cover the nuances of governance and accountability, the importance of vibes, the indispensability of shipping products (versus debating roadmaps), and, the vision behind the so-called “superchain”.As head of the Optimism Foundation, Wang helps stewards the Optimism collective — a band of decentralized companies, communities, contributors, and others who are using a suite of open source software – called the OP Stack — to scale the Ethereum blockchain network. The OP Stack also powers a number of popular "layer two" rollups — including Base, which we covered in last week's episode with its creator and lead, Coinbase's head of protocols Jesse Pollak.Be sure also to check out the a16z crypto YouTube channel for video podcast episodes, as well as talks from our recent startup accelerator programs CSX featuring Jing, Optimism co-founder Karl Floersch, and more.Resources for references in this episode:More on Optimism: open source code software licensesthe OP StackMore on the Optimism superchain collective, including:Coinbase's BaseRedstoneWorldcoin"Understanding Dencun, the biggest upgrade to Ethereum since The Merge" by Noah Citron and Valeria Nikolaenko (a16z crypto, March 2024)More on Ethereum upgrade EIP-4844 (Github)"Layer 2, rollups, and building onchain (with Base)" by Jesse Pollak, Eddy Lazzarin, and Robert Hackett (a16z crypto, May 2024)"Composability is to software as compound interest is to finance" by Chris Dixon (a16z crypto, October 2021)"The Nature of the Firm" by Ronald Coase (Economica, November 1937)"Weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation" [Intro 6.2 footnote] (Congress.gov)As a reminder none of the following should be taken as tax, business, legal, or investment advice. On today's episode, I'm joined by Juan Fran Blanco. Juan is the creator of “Solidity”, the most popular Solidity-oriented VSCode extension in the world. The extension provides hundreds of thousands of Solidity developers daily access to syntax highlighting, autocomplete, and much more. Juan's main focus is Nethereum, a .NET framework for interacting with EVM blockchains. Nethereum is useful for interacting with the blockchain from Microsoft based operating systems, which constitute a huge number of the virtual and physical devices in the world. In this episode, we discuss Juan's experiences working on Ujo Music with Simon De La Rouviere and Karl Floersch, how the Solidity VSCode extension works under the hood, and what role Nethereum plays in the ecosystem. It was great getting to talk 1-on-1 with someone whose software I use every day. I hope you enjoy this episode.

I first heard him on the Bankless Podcast and I was really touched by his optimistic outlook on technology as a whole and on Blockchain and Ethereum in particular. It's no wonder he is now the Chief Technology Officer at Optimism, an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution.  We talked about tokenisation's cultural and socioeconomic impacts and the many new challenges and opportunities that come with it.  I really enjoyed this conversation with Karl Floersch and I hope you do too.   Sponsor of this episode

We then move onto topics like decoupling value creation and value capture, the sustainability of public goods, Ether's Phoenix (a play on Roko's Basilisk, the thought experiment which originated in the LessWrong community), and governance models as lying somewhere on the continuum from being exclusionary to being conformist. Karl’s ability to explain the deeper mechanics of software running in the Ethereum environment is unique and discussions with him are always fun, insightful, and visionary. Then we have Manfred Karrer, the creator of Bitsquare. For the uninitiated, Bitsquare is a decentralized fiat to crypto exchange. While it is completely self contained and doesn’t use Ethereum in any way. It’s a standalone DApp and that’s pretty cool. On top of that that we have a comprehensive, decentralized version of local bitcoins now which is extremely newsworthy. Bitsquare is especially interesting because by looking at the challenges Manfred faced throughout its development we can gain an understanding of the need for a unified DApp platform.
